In the digitalization era several technology features have become essential in order to increase the productivity of industries and decrease the environmental impact during the product life cycle. This means that engineering, marketing, sales, and other areas that constitute a modern company are driven by data, which accumulates and tends to become more complex with time. Information acquisition and data storage technologies are at an advanced stage in the national industries. However, even though data from process areas such as engineering, manufacturing, processes, and services can be obtained, data integration, management, and implementation in the virtual world are not a focus of research. With the growing demand for individualized products, the digital twin offers an effective solution for modeling, development, and innovation. This work seeks to provide a better product-digital interface for better design execution and product development management, making the life cycle more efficient, integrated, and sustainable. Through the conducted study, a framework was developed for the initiation of engineering projects with the intention of building a digital twin and finally, this same project structure was put to test by means of a case study. The construction of the digital twin of an additive manufacturing platform, customized with a Delta-type robot, was started in the form of an integrated project from the requirements, generating at the end, a digital product, with all information integrated and related to the product objects and engineering project. Therefore, it is stated that the created process structure presents a valid and tested strategy for the initiation of any digital twin project, so that the product can follow the life cycle with all the necessary information for further manufacturing and service development.
