Abstract
As emissões
The consumption of natural resources and the generation of plastic waste increased
rapidly in the second half of the 20th century and in the 21st century, representing a serious problem
for the environment. With the COVID-19 pandemic, measures and recommendations were adopted
to prevent the spread of the disease, so that, to contain the spread of the virus, single-use polymer
products were widely used, and several studies around the world pointed out concern about an
increase in plastic waste in this period. In this sense, a challenge is the reuse of plastic waste, adding
value to discarded materials and reinserting them into the production chain. For this, recycling is
essential, and in Brazil, waste pickers cooperatives are of great importance. They are the ones who
collect, clean, separate, store and send this waste to companies that recycle it and reintegrate it into
the production process. In addition to contributing to the reduction of waste in the environment,
recycling makes it possible to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Thus, this study aimed to
analyze the collection of plastic waste during the pandemic, in order to verify if there was an
increase, comparing data from years prior to the pandemic and data from the pandemic period; in
addition, the work aims to evaluate the contribution of cooperatives in reducing GHG emissions,
highlighting their importance in the current scenario. Emissions were calculated using a simplified
methodology and the GHG emission calculator by the ProteGEEr Project. Calculations were made
by comparing the use of recycled resources and virgin resources to produce new plastics. The
results showed significant numbers for the use of recyclable materials instead of virgin materials.
