Resumo
A medical degree goes far beyond the gathering of theoretical knowledge. It also involves the development of non-cognitive skills: the socio-emotional skills. These tools permeate not only professional medical practice and doctor-patient/doctor-team relationships, but also the very experience that medical school exposes its students to. Empathy, communication, trust, resilience and socio-cultural sensitivity are
discussed here as fundamental tools for the doctor and medical student, and explored in a reflection text about the author's experience during her time at the Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCar), during the undergraduate medical course.
