The growing increase in the elderly population with cognitive impairment highlights the need for strategies that promote the preservation and protection of cognition in this age group. In this context, chess presents itself as a potentially beneficial practice. Objectives: The present study aimed to evaluate the effects of chess training on cognitive ability, mood, and quality of life in a group of older adults attending a Senior Community Center located in a city in the interior of the State of São Paulo, Brazil. Method: The research adopted a quasi-experimental, quantitative approach with a pre- and post-intervention design, involving weekly training sessions. The sample consisted of 25 older adults, of whom 22 completed the study (12 in the Chess Intervention Group and 10 in the Control Group – waiting list, three were excluded due to withdrawal because of health problems.), with three participants excluded due to health-related withdrawal. The classes were structured using the Sessa Platform, which served both as an evaluation tool and as a resource for the systematic teaching of chess. The intervention lasted for six months, with weekly one-hour sessions (24 in total) lasting 1 hour. Data collection instruments included a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination-Revised (ACE-R), the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HAD), and the World Health Organization Quality of Life for Older Persons (WHOQOL-OLD). Data were tabulated and analyzed using Jeffrey’s Amazing Statistics Program (JASP), version 0.18. Results: The results showed that most participants were female, divorced, belonged to the C2 economic class, and practiced physical activity. The comparison between the pré - and post-intervention moments of the Chess Intervention Group (GIX) revealed a significant improvement in the domain of chess knowledge (p=0.009), as measured by the Sessa platform, reflecting progress in learning and concentration ability. Significant effects were also observed for anxiety symptoms (p=0.008), as well as positive trends in the domains of memory (p=0.062) and visuospatial function (p=0.056). Conclusion: It is concluded that chess may represent a relevant non-pharmacological intervention for the care of cognitive and emotional health in the older population.

The control of contaminant microorganisms in Brazilian sugar-ethanol industries frequently involves the use of sulfuric acid, which, when applied at the end of each fermentation cycle, not only controls contaminant bacteria but also promotes deflocculation of the yeast, contributing to ethanol production efficiency. Few studies have investigated the effect of acid treatment on the yeasts responsible for the fermentative process, particularly regarding viability — understood as the proportion of living cells capable of reproduction — and vitality — defined as the functional and physiological capacity of cells to carry out metabolic activities. In this study, we evaluated the effect of sulfuric acid treatment (pH 2.5; 2 h) on the viability and vitality of Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells, using the industrial strains PE-2 and CAT-1 in fed-batch fermentation with cell recycling, in sugarcane broth, over six fermentation cycles. We analyzed CFU/mL, number of viable cells/mL (erythrosine staining), viability (%), budding (%), growth in liquid medium and counting of bud scars, as well as alcohol content (g/100 mL), final pH, residual total reducing sugars (g/100 mL) and yield (g ethanol/g total reducing sugars) after each cycle of cell treatment. A control fermentation without acid treatment was also conducted, using water in place of the acid. In the PE-2 strain, acid treatment significantly affected viability (%), budding (%), specific growth rate (μmax, h⁻¹) and change in absorbance. However, fermentative yield was not compromised by the acid treatment, suggesting an adaptive profile capable of sustaining fermentative capacity; in contrast, the CAT-1 strain showed greater sensitivity to acid stress, with effects on budding (%), alcohol content (g/100 mL) and sugar consumption (g/100 mL). The increase in budding occurred concomitantly with accumulation of residual sugars and reduction in yield, indicating a prioritization of survival and cell division at the expense of fermentative efficiency. Moreover, analysis of bud scars revealed evidence of selection for metabolically active cells accompanied by death of young cells, a behavior that did not vary markedly between strains or treatments. Taken together, these results indicate that, although the CAT-1 strain persists across cycles, it exhibits a lower fermentative yield than PE-2 in the presence of acid treatment, probably due to lower tolerance to the acid treatment and a stronger mobilization of growth strategies to maintain cell viability during fermentation.

This research analyzed Brazilian scientific production on suicide, aiming to understand its academic approach and identify relevant trends, authors, institutions, journals, and thematic areas. To this end, a quantitative bibliometric research methodology was adopted, using bibliographic data from the Scopus and OpenAlex databases, processed by the VOSviewer and Biblioshiny tools to construct indicators of production, citation, and linkage. The results revealed significant growth in publications from 2010 onwards, especially between 2020 and 2021, with an emphasis on mental health, social vulnerability, and clinical-epidemiological studies. International cooperation is noteworthy, particularly with the United States, the United Kingdom, Portugal, and Canada. Among the most productive authors are Flávio Kapczinski, Neury Botega, Antonio Egídio Nardi, Maria Cecília Minayo, Karen Jansen, and Humberto Correa, and among the most frequently cited journals are Ciência e Saúde Coletiva, Revista Brasileira de Psiquiatria, and Jornal Brasileiro de Psiquiatria. The University of São Paulo leads the production, followed by other reference institutions, and the central areas of publication focus on Medicine, Psychology, Psychiatry, and Sociology, confirming the interdisciplinary nature of the topic. It was concluded that national research emphasizes mental disorders, vulnerable groups, social and environmental factors, epidemiological contexts, and manifestations of suicidal behavior, highlighting the relationship between psychological suffering, suicide risk, and impact on work. The study evidenced the need for responsible communication about suicide, grounded in scientific rigor and neutral language, in order to support health professionals, communicators, and managers in prevention and in strengthening support networks, such as the Center for Life Appreciation (CVV). Furthermore, it demonstrated the relevance of bibliometrics for Library and Information Science, by applying its tools to the analysis of a sensitive topic, and pointed to the importance of future qualitative research integrating mental health, communication, and information management, expanding support for the formulation of more effective public policies.
