Cu-Zn-Al mixture oxides catalysts with atomic ratios r-Cu/Zn=3,0 and R=Cu+Zn/Al=1,2 were obtained by means of citric complexing method. The influence of citric acid content was studied varying P=(eq.citric acid/Eq.metal) between 0,7-1,5 and the calcination temperature from 400 to 700°C in the precursors. Precursors and oxides were characterized by IR, TDA, TGA, XRD, SBET, TPR, SCU and SEM. The thermal decomposition of the precursors was studied in N2 and air atmosphere. The X-rays diphratograms of the calcinated oxides presented two cristallite phases: CuO and ZnAl2 04. The TPR curves showed an increment of CuO phase segregation as the calcination temperature was increased. The catalytic activity of this system was checked through the direct transformation of ethanol varying contact tim e and reaction temperature. It was verified that the catalysts presented decreasing activity for ethyl acetate when Cuo segregation increased.

Alumina (Al2O3) ceramic specimens have been prepared via traditional ceramic process, namely, powder analyses, classification and conditioning, uniaxial cold pressong and sintering. DC electrical resistivity measurements has been carried out at RT and 600oC. A tubular resistive furnace with an alumina sample chamber with platinum leads and electrodes was used. The main results show that the electrical resistivity of polycrystalline alumina increases with the decrease of the porosity, having as a limit the single crystal resistivity. Moreover, the electrical resistivity depends on the average grain size in the 4Wm 10 Wm range. For grain sizes smaller than 4 Wm the porosity is found to be higher than 0,1%.

Nowadays, the modern society is going through radical technological changes that are generating debate and proposals concerning new ways of working. Information, computer and communication technologies represent an important role as modifiers of the way the work is done. When people in any kind of organization join themselves in workgroups to solve a problem or make a decision it is necessary to develop or use new dynamic group techniques for these people to work together. So, this work is concerned with matters of this kind where the computer is used to support the tasks of workgroups, what is quite new and revolucionary, being necessary some facilities to aid in the development and coordination of the work. In this dissertation it is introduced and defined this new technology. It is also presented a prototype of a groupware tool which helps people organize workshops, conferences, seminars, etc. The developed prototype brings some contributions to the CSCW área an is the begining of a more complex system to help the organization of Academic Events (conferences, workshops, etc.). From the user point of view the cooperation is seen as the possibility to the program committee, to share the decision to choose the papers that will make the technical program. In this case the decision should be centralized on-line. The tool allows that the referres can make, in assincronous mode, the assessment of the papers they are judging. Among many others tasks the tool allows the recording of the structure of the event, incluiding comittes, their chairs and participants, role definition and script of each stake holder, etc.

This paper looks at the intersections between feminist epistemology, feminist jurisprudence and research on artificial intelligence and the law. It is suggested that feminist theory highlights the role of subjectivity which is ignored in the traditional epistemology of AI systems. This allows AI systems to appear to be "perspectiveless" when they may be tacitly used in a normative role which ignores alternative knowledges. The paper looks at the Cyc system as an example. In developing an expert system to advise on Sex Discrimination law a number of lessons are learned both from the Forms Helper system and more particularly from feminist jurisprudence and from the critique of AI from feminist epistemology.

The goals of Physical Education have changed in the past few years based on the different interests of the educational institutions and their political orientation, From the beginning of the 70's on. an increasing preoccupation not only with the essays related to Physical Education, but with the graduation of teachers in this area, till then were characterized by the repetition of the motion behavior to be taught. To be able to present a strategy of action different from the perspective discussed above, implies having knowledge of good quality about the leaming process the abilities required for the execution of these contests and more efficient procedures of teaching, for both normal and physical or mental disabled ones. The main aim of this work is to demonstrate that the required behavior background organized as a teaching programme, allow children with Down's Syndrome to leam basic basketball movements in a easy way without the need of motion leaming through repetition. This programme was divided into teaching units, each of them formed by a set of hierarchical abilities in a sequence according to its complexity and functionality. For each motion ability or a set of it, teaching facilities have been elaborated in order to ease the leaming process. An evaluation programme and the performance of each child was done individually, based on the quality of the motion behavior performed, on the frequency of correct abilities presented and on the levei of help offered to the pupils. We have studied four children with Down's Syndrome with age in the six-13 years range, registered in a special educational school in São Carlos city. It was observed that ali individuais, on the whole, showed a performance considered correct in the last sessions, whose objective was the leaming of behaviors considered more complex, faster when compared to the leaming in the beginning of the programme, indicating that the individuais learned how to leam. It also enabled the teacher to quickly and easily identify the abilities involved in the behaviors and the degree of difficulty presented by the students in their acquisition, and thus choose and/or modify the strategies for the teaching of each and every objective. These results may contribute both to the practice of physical education teachers, in the perspective of a transforming action, and to increasing the knowledge on how individuais with Down's Syndrome leam motion behavior and which benefits may be derived from them.

Laboratory experiments were carried out with the aim of studying the production of dissolved and capsular exopolysaccharides in diíFerent growth ages by Staurastrum tohopekaligiensis Wolle. This microalga was isolated from a marginal lagoon of the Mogi- Guaçu River, SP-Brazil. The cells were grown axenically in artificial culture médium under controlled conditions of light intensity, temperature, aeration and light/dark cycle. After 25 and 48 days of growth, the cells were harvested by centrifligation, washed with distilled water by centrifiigation, resuspended in distilled water, and submitted to 40 0C under mixing with a magnetic stirrer to extract the capsules. The capsular material and the dissolved one were both filtered, concentrated, dialyzed and ffeeze-dried. The production of exopolysaccharides was greater in the stationary growth phase than in the exponential one. Gel filtration chromatography analysis revealed that both the capsular and the extracellular polysaccharides obtained at different growth ages can be ífactioned in two fractions, "A" and "B". Fraction "A" presented a molecular weight close to or larger than 2 x 106 daltons, while fraction "B" of 2 x IO6 daltons, approximately. lon exchange chromatography data showed great similarities between capsular polysaccharide and extracellular polysaccharide, both having acid nature. When different growth ages are considered, a significant variation was observed in relation to the percentual participation of fractions "A" and "B" of the capsular polysaccharide. It was observed that fraction "B" from "old" cultures represents 92% of the total. Biochemical analysis revealed that the extracellular material does not have a sulphate group but has a proteic fraction. Gas chromatography analysis of extracellular and capsular polysaccharides revealed the presence of neutral sugars and acid sugars. The neutral sugars are; flicose, galactose, glucose, mannose, rhamnose, arabinose and 3-O-methyl galactose and the acid ones are: galacturonic acid and glycuronic acid.

This study has aimed to environmental planning on São Carlos City through the purpose of a classification system for public areas and public green areas, based on its structural, functional, utilitarian and legal attributes of public areas, to allow the social and environmental diagnosis based on population density, percentage of green areas and green area/population ratio to whole urban nucleus. The GIS (Geographical Information System) IDRISI provided a necessary support to development and application of operational models. The diagnosis of arborization allows determine 8 strategies that will operate over public and particular areas, aiming enhance the quality of environment and life. The proposition of implantation of new green areas was evaluated through prognosis. The results have shown 2.07 percentage of green areas. The green area/population ratio was 2.59 m2/person. The proposal of new areas for arborization would result at 6.98 m2/person, representing a real ameliorate from the present situation, however the prognosticated value was considerate low when comparing to other Brazilian cities. It was conclude that the Classification Model for Public Areas is adequate for the defined purposes and there is a need to review the specific legislation, therefore, planning and organizing the Local Government which would act effectively to accomplish the environmental policy.

Down syndrome is usually due to meiotic nondisjunction leading to trisomy 21.The origin of nondisjunction in trisomy 21 has so far been studied using cytogenetic heteromorphisms and DNA polymorphisms. Short sequence repeats have recently been described as an abundant class of DNA polymorphisms in the human genome, which can be typed using the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) amplification. Analysis of these polymorphisms may provide a more accurate understanding of the meiotic stage of nondisjunction in trisomy 21 than that previously provided by chromosomal heteromorphisms. The following DNA polymorphisms located in pericentromeric region of human chromosome 21. Were typed D21S13E, D21S16 and D21S120. The other polymorphism studied was HMG14-GT2 which map to the terminal band 21q22.3. In the present stud such markers were used in order to the determine the parental origin and the meiotic stage of the additional chromosome 21 in 32 cases of Down syndromy. Seven families were informative showing that nondisjunction ocurred in meiosis I and three were from maternal origin using HMG14-GT2 polymorphism. In the other molecular systems the families are not informatives.

This study studied the effects of reprocessing on the terpolymer acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS). ABS presents an intrinsic instability to oxidative, thermal or photochemically initiated degradation. Therefore, we sought to adopt a methodology for thermal restabilization of ABS, through the use of different commercial thermal stabilizers (always in the form of a blend of phenolic antioxidants and phosphites in a ratio of 1:2, respectively), and to study the effects of restabilization on the overall performance of the material. The study was divided into two stages: pre-selection of formulations and accelerated thermal aging. In the pre-selection, processing tests were performed to evaluate the processing stability of the four formulations used in relation to the reprocessed regrind without restabilization. Multiple-pass tests were performed with monitoring of the flow index and processing simulation tests on the Haake torque rheometer. The four samples with restabilization (formulations 1-4) and the non-restabilized regrind showed essentially the same stability characteristics, with no significant differences between the samples. In any case, formulation 2 was chosen to proceed, together with the regrind, to the accelerated aging test, due to its flow stability according to the evaluations of fluidity index and torque stability in the Haake Torque Rheometer. Test specimens for tensile and impact tests were injected from formulation 2 and the regrind, and these were subjected to the accelerated thermal aging test, in an oven with air circulation, at 100°C, for 1000 hours. After this period, the unaged (to) and aged (ti) specimens were characterized by monitoring their mechanical properties, and the samples from the granulated reprocessed material (pellets) to the aged c.p. (ti) were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and infrared spectroscopy with attenuated total reflectance (FTIR-ATR). It was observed that the ABS terpolymer presents good reprocessing conditions, despite its low thermooxidative stability. The material presented a small variation in the fluidity index, demonstrating that the thermooxidative degradation did not cause significant changes in molecular weight. On the other hand, degradation manifested itself quickly in the polybutadiene (PB) phase, indicating that, in the long term, it can cause a significant decrease in impact resistance. The behaviors were very similar, both in the restabilized sample (formulation 2) and in the ground sample without restabilization.

Nowadays, the flux method is one of the most widely used techniques promote growth of YBa2Cu3O7-ȣ single crystal superconductor. By using the material in a melted state, the reactions due to temperature are possible. To prepare single crystal superconductors of the family Y-Ba-Cu-O, a long period of time is necessary to melt the material in adequate conditions. In order to do this a satisfactory performance of the crucible is required; it must be resistant to any kind of chemical attack. In this work some materials used were investigated in crucibles. Platinum, gold (noble metals), oxides like Al2O3, ZrO2 showed problems when used in processing Y123 superconductors. To avoid this problem the zirconiaytria system is largely applied. Some authors have investigated the SnO2 crucible, but they found problems related to the densification of the SnO2. Recently, it was discovered that SnO2 can be densified without liquid phase, showing 99,7% of the theoretical density when sinterized up to 1300°C. Then, this condition was used to produce crucibles by slip casting to form the YBa2Cu3O7-ȣ single crystal superconductors without contamination. It was observed, in a first instance, that SnO2 crucibles are resistant to chemical attack of the flux that is rich in barium and copper. During the process it was observed an interface wall between the vial and the flux formed by BaSnO3. This protection is formed after heat treatment at 1025°C during 4, 17 and 24 hours. By increasing the treatment time (up to 24 hours), it was observed that the wall thickness increased too and it was possible stablish a relation between treatment time/thickness wall (that defines the resistance of chemical attack). This enabled the determination of the SnO2 crucible resistance to corrosion, under the flux condition. The second part of this work involved the Y123 single crystal growth. After produced, they were analysed by x-ray diffraction and SEM with microanalysis in cross sections of the crucibles to observe the BaSnO3 interface. It was observed that single crystals were not contaminated by tin, and they were analyzed through measuring magnetization vs. Temperature. The single crystal showed a critical temperature (Tc) around 90,5K with a transition width (Tc) around 19,5K before treatment with an oxygen flux at 450°C. After seven days of a second treatment under the same conditions, the Tc was increased to 92K with a decreasing to 4,5K in Tc. The results showed that SnO2 vials are resistant to BaO-CuO flux and appropriate to single crystal growth in YBa2Cu3O7-ȣ superconductors without external.

In this work, we have investigated the polaronic state formed in the system of surface electrons confined in a quasi-one-dimensional channel over liquid helium. The electrons bound to the surface by a holding electric field can be laterally confined by electrostatic or structural means and the lateral confinement can be modeled by a parabolic potencial. The polaron is a quasi-particle composed by the eleçtron coupled to the surface deformation (dimple) wich arises from the pressing field. The polaron properties are obtained from the solution of the coupled nonlinear system formed by the Schrõdinger equation and the equation for mechanical equilibrium of the surface deformation. We have employed two kinds of approximations to solve the system. The first one, named the harmonic approximation, consists in expanding the surface deformation in second order for dimensions smaller than a localization radius, and the other one is the variational method, in which a harmonic-oscillator like trial function is proposed. We have determined the surface deformation, the electron energy in the dimple, and the polaron energy as a function of the holding electric field. We have also studied the influence of a magnetic flield applied in the direction perpendicular to the surface. We established the field threshold for the existence ofbound states in the system. Our results for the ground-state energy are the same in both approximations. However, for the excited states, we show that the harmonic approximation is reliable only in certain conditions.

Vocational Rehabilitation Programs for people with disability have been considered important, contributing for their insertion in the labour market. On the other hand they are targets of criticism due to this kind of practice, being some times authoritarian, paternalist and segregational. An analysis of such programs reveals importance because of this ambivalence that follows the dynamics developed within the Institution. We considered the client s view of great priority in this analysis. So, this research proposes a comprehension of the practice developed in an Institution that performs a Vocational Rehabilitation Program, starting from interviews done with their former clients. Their opinions, critics and suggestions supported us, comparing the obtained data with document analysis and other interviews with the staff. Thirty-two clients have been interviewed, being twenty-two hearing-imparied, five with physical dysfunction and five mentally handicapped. For most of the cases of audictive dysfunction a sign interpreter was needed. The items discussed referred to their professional experiences; participation in the Vocational Rehabilitation Programs; entrance, staying and mobility in the labour market. For the majority of the interviewed clients, the Institution favored the acess and staying in the labour market. On the other hand, they questioned the length of the Program prefering something shorter, although understanding the need of a preparation to the entrance in the labour market, there are references to the little diversification of activities , or tiring activities used as training. They also mentioned the importance of counseling in relation to their personal and social aspects. The staff discussed the need of a variety of training activities and modalities for engaging in the labour market. They showed the need to review the performance assessment model used; they are concerned with the profile of workmanship required by the labour market and with the changes increasing in the world of work, in an era of globalization. Therefore it was concluded that the program has showed itself satisfactory in its proposals of favoring the entrance and staying of the people with disabilities in the labour market, although there are issues raised by ex clients and by the professionals of the institution that need to be reviewed, in order to offer better services.

One of the highest risks to the newborn, according to several authors is Asphyxia, a progressive process potentially reversible in the initial stages, in a spontaneous way, if the cause is removed. However, once in progress, this spontaneous reverse process becomes difficult, for the most part, due to circulatory, metabolic and neurologic alterations that goes with it can lead to severa[ leveis of compromising in its development. There are matemity hospital conducts in the neonatal period that may detect any risk of alteration in its development. Under the risk of disabilities, it is necessary to refer the newbom to initiate an intervention as soon as possible, avoiding future disabilities and recuperation of those already installed. Based on its presumed above, it led the objectives of this research that intended to analyze the neuropsychomotor development of infants that participated in an early home intervention, relating with features of perinatal asphyxia detected in matemity hospital and, comparing with the literature data. The study had as participating, an experimental group (GE), and a control group (GC), composed on risky babies, with features of perinatal asphyxia, detected in the maternity hospital. The infants in the GE participated intervention program from 3'd week until 3'd month of life. The GE mothers, was also participants, since they were present in the stimulation process. All the infants (the GE and the GC) were submitted to assessments in neuropsychomotor development until the 24th week. The chosen place to the intervention was the own infant's home. The procedure consisted of 3 (three) stages: 1) an interoiew with the mothers of GE, with the objective to know the newbom routine; 2) an assessment of its neuropsychomotor development, realized in 2"-d, 3rd, 8th and 12th week, 1 (5th, 2()lh and 24th week of infants life and, 3) the GE global stimulation twice a weekfrom 3'd week until the 12th week. The results were achieved through analysis interventions before the aspects: (a) the researcher conducts, the infant's responses and the guidance supplied to the mother; (b) from development comparison of the infants in the GE along with its development; (e) from development comparison of the infants in the GE and the GC with the described in the literature and (d) from development comparison on the GE with the GC, on 6months. With these data was concluded that an early intervention participate of the evolution in the development in the infants at risk, therefore it is not the only reason that acts in this development and that the home intervention improves the interaction between the therapist with the infants. And was concluded that its family, mainly the mother, that is the most important in this stimulation process.

This work presents an integration environment between the standards MHEG-5 and SMIL. The MHEG-5 standard defines the syntax and the semantics of a group of objects which can be used for interoperability of multimedia applications among platforms with minimal resources. On the other hand, the SMIL standard provides synchronized media in the Web documents. In order to integrate the two standards two translators were developed. With this integration the multimedia applications can be presented either in a Web environment, using SMIL, or in authoring tools following the MHEG-5 standard. A rule database was developed to carry out the translations; which has as an objective to store the translating rules between the standards allowing for dynamism in the translation process. As a test database for the translations a Multimedia Object Server multimedia database was used in the AMOM project, where a connection module was developed between these database an the Web environment. This work has also involved the proposal of an environment which integrates the SOMm and the Web, whose title is MAW (Multimedia Application WebBuilder).

Due to the Brazilian Constitution from 1.988, the Municipalities were born as beings integrating the Brazilian Federation, with the States and the Union itself, setting a new standard for Constitucional Law studies. It depends on investigating the whole new borders for the Municipalities competency on editing and applicating the environmental law to get Knowing of the role the mayor, the local legislators and the citizens may play on acting for the purposes established on Art. 225 of the refered Magna Carta. Upon studies developped at the Country of Luiz Antonio, in the hinterland of Sao Paulo State, by senior and junior researchersfrom Sao Carlos Federal University altogether with elected locals, a proposal was reached consubstanciated in a draft of a proposed to be COMDEMA's Bill, standing COMDEMA for Local Council for Environmental Protection.

This work analyzed the density, biomass and bacterian biovolume through epifluorescency's microscopy with acridina's orange, they were related with the trophic state of two aquatic ecosystem in Minas Gerais. The samples were colected in september 1995 (dry season) and february 1996 (rainy season) in the littoral and limnetic zone of Pampulha reservoir, a eutrofized urban ecosystem, located at north region of Belo Horizonte city, strongly influenciated by the exhaust of the domestic and industrial sewers derived from of its tributaries and by the dumping of garbage by the population around, and in the Olhos d'Água lagoon, a natural urban ecosystem, oligotrophic, and little antropofically influenciated. Significantly differences were founded between physics, chemistry and biological varieties in that two environments. At Pampulha reservoir, the bacterian density oscillated from 0.31 x 106 bacteria/ml and 1.73 x 106 bacteria/ml in the drying season and between 0.31 x 106 and 1.15 x 106 bacteria/ml in the raining season. The biomass oscillated between 50.9 μgC/l and 279.9 μgC/l in the drying season and between 66.6 μgC/l and 205.2 μgC/l in the drying season. The biovolume oscillated between 0.376 μm3/l and 0.644 μm3/l in the drying season and between 0.377 μm3/l and 0.667 μm3/l in the raining season. In the Olhos d'Água lagoon the density oscillated between 0.15x106 bacteria/ml and 0.19x106 bacteria/ml in the drying season. The biomass oscillated between 9.9 μgC/l and 44.70 μgC/l in the drying season and between 14.70 μgC/l and 28.33 μgC/l in the raining season. The biovolume oscillated between 0.151 μm3/l and 0.728 μm3/l in the drying season and between 0.221 μm3/l and 0.591 μm3/l in the raining season. These results suggest that there is a relationship between the bacterian community and the trophic state at the eutrophic environments where the bacterian community exists with higher results (density and biomass) due to major quantity of carbon available in the environment proceeding from the antropogenic actions. Studies about the quantity of (DOC) dissolved organic carbon, possible relationship among the bacterian and fitoplanktonic communities and predatories taxes of the picoplankton by the microzooplankton are needed at tropical environments to understand the bacterian dynamic in those environments.
