The Campus of the Universidad Federal de Sao Carlos - UFSCar involves around eight thousand people in higher education and research. In the last years, the urbanized area of the Campus increased very fast. This great expansion generated a larger demand in planning, administration and controls of several facilities and services in the University. The information about the Campus is stored in different departments and the fast growth of its built area did with that the administrators need faster system to update those data. So, in this work it was developed a spatial database modeling for the implementation of a Geographical Information System - GIS to the UFSCar Campus. GIS is a tool able to store, to manipulate and to analyze data enabling periodic updating. The method used in this work was based on spatial database modeling. Three levels of modeling were applied. In the first level (Real World), it was made a research to evaluate the needs of information of the administrative sections and another research to evaluate the proposals of the Plano de Desenvolvimento Institucional (Plan for Institutional Development) - PDI, of UFSCar. In the second level (Conceptual), it was created a Diagram of Themes and a Partial Meta Model. In the third level (Representation), the spatial database model was created using the Geo-OMT's notation Model.

In the present study, perovskite-type NiTiO3 ceramic pigments were prepared by the polymeric precursor method, originally proposed by Pechini. The transluscent and viscous polymeric resin was characterized by thermogravimetric analysis. The product of the resin s pyrolysis, also known as "puff", was desagglomerated and calcined at different temperatures, under room atmosphere. The evolution of the crystalline phase with increasing heat treatment temperature was studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD). A comparative study of the characteristics of the ceramic pigments, which resulted from the calcination of the attrition-milled "puff", was made. The calcined powders presented high specific superficial area values, as determined by the BET method. The pigment colors were measured by the CIE - L*a*b* colorimetric system. It was observed, through the colorimetrics coordinates, that the pigments are yellow. The morphology of the prepared NiTiO3 powders was studied by scanning electron microscopy. A mean particle diameter of approximately 30nm was estimated through transmission electron microscopy (TEM) measurements. The isoelectric point of the particles dispersed in ethanol was determined. Afterwards, the attrition-milled, nanometric, single-phase pigments, calcined at 600ºC for 2 hours, were coated with an amorphous SiO2 layer. The encapsulation was done by a sol-gel process. Moreover, the encapsulation was confirmed through TEM characterization, X-ray dispersive energy analysis and a shift on the position of the isoelectric point of the dispersed particles

The objective of this work was to define guidelines for Use Case Model (Use Case Diagram and Specification) construction. The use of use cases and UML notation for requirements modeling is a widely used option, don' t matter the development paradigm. However, neither guidelines for Use Case construction are provided by UML, neither there are works in the literature that provide a more systematic support for this activity. Hence, this activity is very dependent on the designer experience and subjectivity, leading to different models for the same system. The proposed techniques, named GUCCRA Guidelines for Use Case Construction and Requirement Analysis, are composed of two readings, AGRT Actor Goal Reading Technique and UCRT Use Case Reading Technique. The definition of these techniques was based on two other reading techniques: PBR-User, used for requirements Document inspection and ER1, of OORTs/ProDeS family, used to validate Use Case Models in relation to the Requirement Documents that were the basis for the model construction. Aiming at evaluating GUCCRA two empirical studies were carried out: the first compared the proposed techniques with an Ad-Hoc approach by constructing Use Case Models related with some Requirement Documents. The second study compared the defects related during the models construction with the defects of PBR-User application in the same documents. From the first study, the results provide evidences that the activity became more systematic with the use of the techniques and that the models became more standardized. From the second study the results showed that the majority of defects found were common to both techniques. Moreover, a study has been prepared to show the positive influence of the systematic standardization of Use Case Models in the application of the Use Case Point metric.

Cities have become a challenge to urban planning professionals. This paper aims to present environmentally adequate techniques of urban intervention to implement cities in the urban design. The methodological development of the research was based on a classical literature review, as well as on the analysis of recent documents, as agenda 21, concerning the environmental sustainability. From the data collection it was possible to compare and organize principles and propose applicable procedures for the urban design. The ideas of bioclimatic urbanism and sustainable development were used having in view the necessity of human comfort in the environment built. In addition, the phenomena resulting from the urbanization process, such as urban microclimate, heat island effects and others, were observed by means of an ecosystemic analysis of the city. The positive relation between the anthropic actions and the natural environment is desirable. The use of environmental techniques aims to minimize the negative effects which result from the predatory way man establishes himself in the urban space by means of an adequate interaction between the implementation of cities and the climatic, topographic and geomorphological factors existing in the urban space. The use of such techniques also aims to propose a bioclimatic urbanism by the utilization and occupation of urban soil according to the environmental planning principles, which is based on the universal design. Due to analytical issues the present study focuses on the hot-humid tropical weather, as it is the most significant type of weather in Brazil. The empirical object of this research corresponds to a central urban area in Jaboticabal, SP. A route with a large flow of pedestrians was chosen for situation. According to the interventions criteria adopted along the study, the problems and possible suggestions to improve the area were diagnosed and analyzed.

The present work investigated the ichthyofauna in the shallow waters of the Paranaguá Bay estuarine complex, Paraná state, Brazil, considering eight sample sites along the north-south axis. The analyses of the physical and the chemical data series of the water and the biological data monthly obtained, taking in account the sediment data series seasonally determined in each site, making possible the environmental characterization and the quali-quantitative assessment of the local ichthyofauna. The hydrological parameter values reflecting an environmental gradient defined by the increasing from the north to the south region of the estuary. The northern sample sites were characterized by higher continental water influence, lower hydrodynamic and higher fine granules amount in the sediment. The biological data analyses of the ichthyofauna in the studied area showed that the complete life cycles of some species take place in this area, emphasized by the relevant occurrence frequencies of juvenile and adult specimens. In the meantime, the highest values of the hydrological parameters were registered on the southern sample sites of the estuary, showing the influence of the marine salt water and characterized by the higher hydrodynamic forces reflected by the high amount of thick granules in the sediment. The ichthyofauna is mainly represented by juvenile fish of marine species that utilize the estuary in some periods of the year and by sporadic marine species. The shallow water ichthyofauna of the Paranaguá Bay estuarine complex is composed by 96 species with predominance of occasional species in comparison to the constant ones, indicating a dynamic environment. The quantitative data analyses of the ichthyofauna showed seasonal differences as in the species composition as in the catch proportion, resulting in a seasonal characterization of the specific richness, of the species diversity, of the eveness and of the similarity indices. The results of the present study emphasize the spatial-temporal heterogeneity of the environment, taking in account its characteristics and the ichthyofauna composition, revealing that the shallow waters of Paranaguá Bay estuarine complex constitute a highly dynamic environment.

Mortality due to road kills has a great impact on natural populations. The present work had the objectives of quantifying road-killed vertebrates in a circuit of the main highways of northeastern São Paulo State, a fragmented area with several unconnected Conservation Units, and to identify factors associated with this source of mortality. For the count of road-killed animals, 52 weekly trips were performed during one year (August 19, 2002 to August 11, 2003) in a circuit of the highways SP253, SP330, SP215, SP310, SP215, SP318, SP255. The species encountered were classified in numbers of one to five, in decreasing order, according to the priority of its conservation in the area. The results from the trips were 596 animals of 81 different species: birds, 310 (52% of the total, 45 identified species); mammals, 184 (31%, 23 species); reptiles, 56 (9%, 11 species); amphibians 35 (6%, 2 species); and 11 (2%), not identified. Considering the 239,24km of the circuit 2,49 animals/km/year were killed. Considering the total effort of 12.440,48km traveled, an average of 0,048animals/km was obtained. These data were added to those supplied by other sources of information, yielding records of 746 animals: 323 birds, 266 mammals, 94 reptiles, 35 amphibians and 28 not identified. In a general way there was smaller number of road-kills in the dry period than in the rainy season, but there was great variation among some species, apparently related to their natural history. The most-frequently found species was the opossum (Didelphis albiventris), with 53 records, in other words, 28,8% of the total of mammals, 8,89% of the total of animals. The Order Carnivora had the largest number of road-killed species (4) among the mammals. There were records of threatened species at the São Paulo State such as the Maned-wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus), Ocelot (Leopardus pardalis), Giant anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla) and Broad Snouted Caiman (Cayman latirostris) and of species that don't occurr naturally in the State. It was found that 70,21% of the animals of categories 1 and 2 (i.e. conservation priorities in the area) died in 47%, or 111,72km of the studied itinerary. This road segment is at a maximum distance of 10km from the nearby Conservation Units, or 5km from the river Mogí-Guaçu. Mitigatory measures were discussed, and four prioritary areas for their establishment were proposed.

In this thesis work the development and applications of cobalt phthalocyanine carbon paste electrode (CoPc/CPE) for voltammetric determination (cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry) of hydrazine in boiler feed water, dopamine, vitamin B1 (thiamine) and vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) in pharmaceutical preparations available commercially in the market, without any previous treatment of the samples. The CoPc/CPE presented voltammetric response (for cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry) linear in the hydrazine concentration range from 1,3x10-4 to 9,8x10-4 mol L-1, with detection limit of 3,0x10-5 mol L-1 and 5,0x10-5 to 7,4x10-4 mol L-1, with detection limit of 2,3x10-5 mol L-5, respectively. The hydrazine quantification in waters of boilers using CoPc/CPE presented results of agreement with the spectrophotometric method with an interval of acceptable relative error. The CoPc/CPE presented a voltammetric response (for cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry) linear in the dopamine concentration range from 1,3x10-5 to 2,8x10-4 mol L-1, with detection limit of 1,0x10-5 mol L-1e 5,0x10-6 to 9,8x10-5 mol L-1, with limit of detection of 1,4x10-6 mol L-1, respectively. That modified electrode presented good performance as voltammetric sensor in the dopamina determination in pharmaceutical preparations. The CoPc/CPE presented an voltammetric response (differential pulse voltammetry) linear in the vitamin B1 (thiamine) concentration range from 5,0x10-5 to 3,8x10-4 mol L-1, with detection limit of 2,5x10-5 mol L-1. The thiamine quantification in pharmaceutical formulations using CoPc/CPE presented results of agreement with the spectrofluorimetric method of Brazilian Pharmacopeia s with an interval of acceptable relative error. CoPc/CPE presented an voltammetric response (for cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry) linear in the vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) concentration range from 5,0x10-5 to 9,8x10-4 mol L-1, with detection limit of 4,7x10-6 mol L-1 and 5,0x10-5 to 3,4x10-4 mol L-1, with detection limit of 1,3x10-6 mol L-1, respectively. That modified electrode presented good performance as voltammetric sensor in the pyridoxine determination in pharmaceutical preparations. The CoPc/CPE was also used in the simultaneous determination of vitamins B1 (thiamine) and B6 (pyridoxine) by differential pulse voltammetry, in pharmaceutical preparations, once the oxidation peaks potentials of the vitamin B1 (-0,13 V) and vitamin B6 (0,55V), healthy very different. The analytic curves were linear in the interval of thiamine concentration of 1,9x10-4 to 7,4x10-4 mol L-1, with limit of detection of 8,4x10-5 mol L-1 and of 1,0x10-4 to 7,4x10-4 mol L-1, with limit of detection of 1,5x10-5 mol L-1 for pyridoxine. That modified electrode presented satisfactory acting as voltammetric in the determination of both in pharmaceutical preparations.

Among the present mammals in the units of conservation Estação Ecológica de Jataí (EEJ) and Parque Estadual de Vassununga (PEV) and in the unit of production, Estação Experimental de Luiz Antônio (EELA), located in the northeast of the State of São Paulo, are the peccaries, Tayassu tajacu. Between March of 2000 and January of 2004, the home range of them, the use of the space, diet and the impacts on the populations in these areas were studied. For obtaining the data, the radiotelemetry technique was used as tool and methods of terrestrial tracking. Seven peccaries received radio-collars for monitoring. It was established four home ranges being three referring to each one of the peccaries of the Estação Ecológica de Jataí (EEJ) and Estação Experimental de Luiz Antônio with 161, 930 and 1.387 hectares and one regarding of the Parque Estadual de Vassununga (PEV), with 350 hectares. It were identified 22 species of plants used by the peccaries and 16 of wich were of confirmed use in the diet, five were considered as of probable use and one species was used as shelter. The diet also included ingested fruits of two palm trees (Família Arecaceae), other native species and five exotic species cultivated at orchards of EELA. It was identified some in this study factors that can be interfering negatively on the populations of peccaries and of other animals as weed killer application, hunts and activities of collection of exotic wood. Indirect impacts were also identified showing the need to improve the system of administration of units of conservation, including the definition of Management Plans that prioritize the regional biodiversity.

The ichthyofauna of Paranagua bay infralittoral was studied from samples obtained from five sampling points, respectively in front of Gamboa dos Papagaios, Gamboa do Sucuriu, Gamboa do Baguaçu, Planície da Ponta do Poço and Praia do Pontal do SuI. The samples were collected monthly, from October 1999 to September 2000, with a trawl net. As a result, 6633 individuals, from 55 species and 27 families were captured, and the madamango sea catfish (bagre) Cathorops spixxi was the most abundant element with 21% of the total number. During the sample collection, the most important variable for the distribution of months was the temperature, which allowed the division of the sampling period into hot and cold months. A detected variation in groupings reflected the temporal oscillation of the ichthyofauna composition, and the variation in dissimilarity between sampling points occurred due to the differences in abundance and richness of the captured species. The highest percentages of dissimilarity between sampling points were observed during the hot months, and the high frequencies of Anisotremus surinamensis, Etropus crossotus, Genidens genidens, Micropogonias fumieri, and Sphoeroides greeleyi were also related to high temperatures. Since a great number of species present a more intense reproductive activity during high temperature periods, and some marine species use the estuary as a rearing ground, a higher number and richness of fishes could be observed during the hot months. Finally, the analysis of the ichthyofauna space variation showed differences in composition and abundance of fish communities from the studied areas. These space differences are probably related to the complexity of the habitats, which is caused by the different bottom covers found at the sampling points.

The restriction in the application of molecular sieves in adsorption or catalytic process involving molecules with diameters higher than 0.8 nm, have lead to the study of solids possessing higher pore size. In that sense, pre - established porous solids might be obtained from the agglomeration of mono - disperse nanospheres, with the resulting porous system being a consequence of the nanospheres diameter and of their physical and chemical properties. In this work, silica-nanospheres were prepared through the tetraethyl-orto-silicate (TEOS) hydrolysis catalyzed by ammonia and in the presence of water and ethanol. In a first step it was developed an optimization of nanospheres synthesis conditions as a function of the temperature and the water and ammonia concentrations. In a later step, solids were prepared from the agglome ration of nanospheres by the liquid medium evaporation or centrifugation. The nanospheres diameter was determined using dynamic light scattering or scanning electron microscopy. The characterization of the agglomerates was realized by scanning and transmission electron microscopy, infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and adsorption/desorption measurements. The results showed that it is possible to synthesize spherical mono-disperse nanospheres with predefined diameter (40 180 nm) by controlling the temperature and water and ammonia concentrations in the synthesis medium. The preparation of nanospheres agglomerates by centrifugation leads to solids with regular array and body centered cubic or hexagonally compact organization. This type of arrangement for nanospheres smaller than 250 nm was favoured by the application of higher centrifugation rates and the obtained solids presented specific surface area higher than the calculated from the obtained diameter, which was attributed to the probable presence of microporous in the nanospheres. Nevertheless of the regular structure of nanospheres agglomerates, the thermogravimetric and infrared spectroscopy data showed that the nanospheres are linked by few Si-O-Si bonds, being the most of them linked by hydrogen bonds, this justifying its low mechanical strength.

In this work, it was investigated the use of thermal inertia in buildings located in Sao Carlos city, SP, which presents semi-humid climate. This research aims to verify the hypothesis that the use of thermal inertia in buildings submitted to the specific climate of Sao Carlos allows to optimize the thermal performance of buildings and to reduce waste of energy to restore indoor thermal comfort. From data obtained by monitoring of seven different buildings, the thermal performance of each one was analyzed when they are submitted to typical simmer and winter conditions. To these seasons, adopting a reference day , it was estimated the heating and cooling requirement to restore the indoor comfort conditions. Besides the analyses for winter and summer seasons, it was estimated the indoor cooling and heating requirement along all moths of the year. Through this analyze, it was possible to verify the real influences of thermal inertia on the indoor comfort conditions. The results indicates that only the use of thermal inertia is insufficient to provide indoor thermal comfort conditions for buildings submitted to the specific climates of Sao Carlos. It is suggested to mach the use of thermal inertia with others passive strategies, in such a way to optimize the thermal performance of buildings.

Planted roofs, known as green roofs as well, can positively contribute to the improvement of buildings thermal performance and cities climate. The advantages of the planted roofs have been object of study of several researchers along different countries. However, some quantitative data on this subject are still needed in the context of tropical climate. The aim of this work is to evaluate the thermal performance of a planted roof and how it influences the thermal protection of the building, in accordance with São Carlos climatic conditions. The investigations were implemented for not only winter, but summer too. During both periods, air relative humidity, surface and air temperature measurements were taken at the indoor and the outdoor environment of the building prototype. Moreover, a comparison between a bare roof and of a green roof was made, using the same building prototype. The outdoor surface temperature for the bare roof and the leaves, which cover the green roof, was estimated through a Jardim 1.0 computational program. Data of global solar irradiance and wind velocity, necessary to estimate the outdoor surface temperatures, were achieved through a weather station. The analysis were ordered according to the thermal performances of the roofs in each one of the situations, separately, and between one and other situation. By field measurements, during the winter and the summer, smaller thermal amplitudes were noticed for the green roof. In the winter, the green roof presented medium thermal amplitude 70% smaller than the bare roof. During the summer, the amount of heat coming into the building prototype was reduced by the green roof. These and other results indicate the major green roof capacity of reducing daily temperature variations and thermal ranges. It has been confirmed that planted roofs effectively contribute to improve the thermal benefits being both, cost and energy effective, for the buildings and their surrounding environment.

Effects of different food sources and culture medium on life history traits of Ceriodaphnia silvestrii were studied under controlled conditions. Animals were submitted to five different treatments: (1) autoclaved natural water filtered through plankton net of 20µm mesh size, supplied with Chlorella lacustris as food source; (2) autoclaved natural water filtered through plankton net of 20µm mesh size, supplied with Scenedesmus bijugus; (3) soft reconstituted water supplied with S. bijugus; (4) soft reconstituted water supplied with S. bijugus plus humic substances (20mg L-1); and (5) hard reconstituted water supplied with S. bijugus. Observations were performed at 12 hours intervals from organism birth until its natural death. All treatments were kept in a 25±1 ºC temperature. Instantaneous rate of population increase (r) was calculated for all treatments. Body length-dry weight relationship was also established. Results showed longer longevity in C. lacustris treatment, and better fecundity on treatment with natural water and S. bijugus. In the treatment with artificial medium, fecundity and growing parameters were lower than in natural water treatment. Increased hardness did not affect reproduction and growth values. Humic substances addition resulted in greater fecundity and survival values. Copper acute toxicity to Ceriodaphnia silvestrii (Cladocera, Daphnidae), was also studied in the absence and presence of humic substances (HS). Groups of 20 adult females of similar sizes were exposed to copper (total concentration range from 10-8 to 10-5 M) for a period of 24h. LC50 was estimated by the Trimmed Spearman-Karber method. It revealed that humic substances altered LC50 from 4.4 x 10-8 M without humic substances to 1.1x10-6 M with 20mg HS L-1 in the medium. Free copper ions were determined in test media and it showed that humic substances reduced Cu2+ concentration. LC50 values based on total copper concentration varied significantly between the two treatments. However, when lethality was estimated based on free ion concentrations, the values were similar: 3.3 x 10-8 M without humic substances, and 2.8 x 10-8 M when HS were present in the medium. Moreover, C. silvestrii is capable of regulating its body copper levels over a range of copper availabilities, as so many other crustaceans. As also reported, humic substances did not influence copper bioaccumulation by C. silvestrii.

In this work we study the problem of existence of non-constant stable equilibria to some parabolic systems. Specifically, the Ginzburg-Landau system, the Landau-Lifshitz system and systems with skew-gradient structure. In all cases, we note that the geometry of the domain has a fundamental role in the problem above: if the domain has a smooth boundary and is convex, then there are no non-constant stable equilibrium solutions, that is, every non-constant equilibrium is unstable.

Observational learning of conditional discrimination has been described in the literature, with results thus far yielding few conclusions. The present study investigated the conditions under which observational learning of conditional discrimination lead to the formation and expansion of equivalence classes in different populations. Served as participants in Experiments 1, 2 and 3, college students; in Experiment 4, preschool children and, in Experiment 5, children and adolescents with special education needs. Experiment 1 systematically replicated an earlier experiment carried out with mentally retarded adults with increased control over stimuli presentation and the demonstrators responses. The experimental stimuli were familiar pictures, and instructions for the participant to observe were introduced. First, BA relations were taught, followed by modeling of CA relations, and by tests of baseline and emergent relations. Finally, modeling of two new relations involving stimulus sets D and E and tests for expanded classes were introduced. All six participants learned the conditional discriminations, and showed equivalence class formation and only one of them did not show class expansion. Experiment 2 had an experimental design analogous to Experiment 1, but all the conditional relations were taught through modeling. Three of four participants learned the conditional discriminations and showed formation and expansion of classes. Experiment 3 extended the Experiment 1 results to three classes of abstract stimuli, all six participants learned the conditional discrimination and 5 of them showed formation and expansion of equivalence classes. In Experiment 4, eight preschool children were submitted to a similar procedure, but with familiar pictures were used as stimuli and tokens that could be exchanged for a gift at the end of the session, regardless of their performance. Six of eight participants learned relations BA and CA and showed equivalence class formation and two of them showed class expansion. In Experiment 5, children and adolescents with special needs were taught BA and CA relations only through modeling. The delay between the demonstrator s behavior and the participants response was manipulated as well as the reinforcement system, and seemed to be important for three out of six participants. The remaining three participants did not learn the relations even after protracted training. In general, observational learning occurred for all populations investigated. Further investigation, however, is necessary to clarify the role of the observational response, differential reinforcement and the delay between demonstration and response, the demonstrator as a conditioned reinforcer, and other reinforcement sources for the observer s behavior.

This study analyses the process of organizational change and the new work relations decurrent of the privatization of eletric sector companies in São Paulo. The privatization of the State companies appears as an important mark in that process of change, because represent the necessity of to adapt the companies towards the new scenery occasioned by aperture of brazilian economy. The study focused on the point of view of an electric energy distributer company s employees, through twenty interviews with employees in various posts. These changes transformed the company organization and also brought consequences to the work relations and society. The centre of discussion was the appearing of new work relations, which was felt by workers as negative consequences, at least in this prime moment of adaptation to the new standard of life.

Metalloproteases are Zn++-dependent peptidase enzymes, richly found in Crotalidae and Viperidae snake venoms. Most snake venom metalloproteases (svMPs) are active on extracellular matrix components and this effect is thought to result in bleeding as a consequence of the basement membrane disruption in capillaries. Jararhagin is a hemorrhagic svMP from Bothrops jararaca venom. This enzyme has proteolytic activity on fibrinogen and fibronectin and inhibits collagen-induced platelet-aggregation in vitro. Its amino acid sequence corresponds to a N-terminal metalloprotease domain, a disintegrin-like and a C-terminal Cysteine-rich, being classified as a P-III snake venom metalloprotease (svMP). This work describes the expression, purification and successful refolding of the recombinant catalytic domain of jararhagin. The heterologous protein was produced in E.coli, an in vivo expression system that does not make post-translational modifications. The recombinant refolded protein did not show any hemorrhagic activity in mice skin, as well as, the native deglycosylated jararhagin. However, they preserved their proteolytic activity on fibrinogen and fibronectin. It seems that the hemorrhagic properties of these hemorrhagins are dependent on post-translational modifications, whereas their proteolytic activity is not completely dependent on such modifications.

In this investigation we have analyzed the development of scientific concepts of students engaged in a teaching intervention on the theme Evolution of the species . That activity had as main characteristics: a) its structure was formulated in a way that aimed on stimulating students reasoning and interfering in one s conception on the theme; b) it was also supported by a teaching instrument that was elaborated with the purpose of simulating the evolutionary process and create a proper environment to develop the intended activities. This intervention, in which the researcher acted as the teacher and students of a University s exam preparatory course participated as volunteers, was meant to generate a diagnosis on the ideas of the participants and also interfere and evaluate (at the end of the process) those. For such, the intervention was subdivided in three phases: Diagnostic Evaluation, Development and Evaluation of the Learning Process. In order to make the investigation possible, a series of data were collected. The concerned: i) the ideas and concepts of the students; ii) the conditions of the learning available to them; iii) teachers interventions; iv) teacher-student interactions; v) different ways of utilizing the teaching instrument. Having in mind the objective of this research, as said before, the same kinds of data were gathered in all phases of the intervention and were subject of analysis regarding each phase and the whole process. As a result of the research we were able to characterize the conceptual development of the participants along the process. One could observe that there was development of elements of the scientific concepts, but the development of a system of meanings, consisting on genuine scientific meanings, that had just began. This partial development enabled us to highlight the importance of the cognitive work of systematization and application of concepts, in order that the process of learning scientific concepts happens through a acquisition of a system of meanings consisting on concepts with a high level of conscience and generalization. We were able to conclude that the consideration of Vygotski s theory on the teaching practice related to science concepts can offer a huge advancement in a significant learning of these concepts. We also identified the important role of the reasoning and actions of the teacher along the process, including his knowledge on the students ideas, on their learning process. In addiction, we have some conclusions about the teaching instrument role in the intervention: was positive in generating motivation on participating in many of the activities done during the intervention; had a positive role in the diagnosis of the students ideas; it helped establishing rules about the use of the instrument when regarding the discussions and situations that were good for the learning process, but it related to some learning difficulties presented by the students; it collaborated in proposing e developing activities that articulated scientific concepts and thought operations ; was possible to allow the central role of the conduction, by the teacher, of the activities related to the instrument to characterize the activity.

Some Artificial Neural Networks may increase their size significantly with its use, making it difficult for a human being study it well. The networks of the Neocognitron model are an example of this kind of network, increasing its initial size many times before the end of their training. Using Scientific Visualization techniques, we obtained a tool that allows the user to see in details a neocognitron network actually working, be it during its training time or the recognition process. This allows a better comprehension of the whole model , as it helps in the construction of a network by allowing experimentation with the parameters of the model. Powering this tool is a library of classes, that can be used separately to the implementation of new ways of visualization or in new simulators of other models of neural networks.
