The vertical integration used in to guava production in São Paulo state is presented as a strategy which helps the agricultural producers in the gradual reach of the business sustainability in the economic, social and environmental dimensions. The aim of this work was to study the agricultural enterprises management which are directed to guava production destined to processing in the biggest producing region of São Paulo state, comparing, through the indicators, the verified results in the agricultural enterprises in which the production verticalization was used, to the obtained ones by the producers who produce the raw material and deliver it to the processing. The study method of multiple cases was chosen for the accomplishment of the work empirical part. It was observed that characteristics such as scholarship low level and the familiar labor participation are common to almost all studied producers, being or not own raw material processors. It was also observed that, only the agricultural producers, who process their productions and are considered great, control the guava production costs. It is verified that the value aggregation to the raw material before trading really contributes for the reach of an agricultural business better performance in the economic, social and environmental dimensions. The main advantage for the producers who verticalized their productions is the best remuneration gotten for the raw material, contributing for the permanence in the sector and reducing the dependence of the raw material sales business for the region processors. The local development as a result of the value aggregation is also verified, through more work ranks generation, income distribution and life quality improvement of the involved ones. Amongst the restrictions of the production verticalization the management tools use absence is emphasized, information register and analysis methods, entry difficulty in the markets for the products trading, specially the international ones, and the price competition of the small clandestine processor products. The majority of the producers did not professionalize the management of their businesses mainly for cultural questions which bring from the land succession process, no matter adding or not value to the production. This study shows the necessity of changing the agricultural producer profile and evidences of adding value to his production is a suitable way to reach the sustainability and the sector permanence.

The Cutting Stock Problem consists of determining the best form to cut units of material (objects in supply), producing a set of lesser units (demanded item), with specific dimensions, that are ordered through an order wallet. To minimize the loss of material this study described a method of evaluation and optimization of the process planning of the cutting of metallic structural tubes used in the manufacturing of small aircrafts for the agricultural aeronautic industry. In order, to support the decisions in the cutting process it was developed an optimization approach based on mathematical mixed integer programming models. The mathematic models are resolved in GAMS/CPLEX, using the production data of Neiva, an aeronautical company subsidiary of Embraer. The results showed that it is possible obtain significant profits in the production in with the application of mathematical models in the process of cut in the aeronautic industry. Mathematical models have a potential to generate beneficial solutions in the production process reducing the costs of production with the re-use of the leftovers.

The topic of this study is primary and secondary child sexual abuse (CSA) prevention in the educational area. The study goals involved planning, implementation and assessment of an intervention program in which teachers acted as CSA prevention agents. The first study step was the program planning based on others experiences described in the literature. Secondly, the program was implemented with 101 pre-school teachers in São Carlos, Brazil, 2.918 children (teachers students aged 4-6 years), and 2.732 children s family members. The program was implemented twice, with 52 and 49 teachers in the first and second time, respectively. Each group was divided into three sub-groups in order to receive the intervention. The program involved a theoretical section with teachers and a workshop conducted by teachers with children and family members. The third part involved the program assessment. Indicators of Sexual Abuse (IAS) data was obtained from 101 teachers at three different moments: before to the intervention, in the middle and at the end of the intervention. Teachers Drill on Child Abuse Identification data was obtained before and after the intervention. IAS and Family Members Drill on Child Abuse Identification data was obtained from 101 family members before and after the workshops conducted by teachers. The Drill on Self-Protective Skills Acquisition for Children data was obtained from 96 children before and after workshops conducted by teachers. IAS teachers results showed that they increased their knowledge about CSA specific symptoms. However, no changes in teachers knowledge about CSA nonspecific symptoms were observed. There was an increase in the percentage of appropriate answers from teachers in Teachers Drill on Child Abuse Identification. Family members IAS results showed no changes in their knowledge about CSA specific or non-specific symptoms. After the workshops, there was an increase in the percentage of appropriate answers by family members in Family Members Drill on Child Abuse Identification and children s performance in the Drill on Self-Protective Skills Acquisition for Children. In order to assess the impact of the program in the community, the number of CSA cases notified were identified from 2002 to 2005, in São Carlos. The data obtained showed an increase of CSA cases notified after the program, as well as an increase of reported cases involving young children s victimization. Simultaneously with the program, the teachers received consultation on how to identify CSA suspected cases in their schools. When sexual abuse suspicion was confirmed, the case was reported by teachers. In general, the program s assessment had an important impact in the schools and community as well. The need to plan and assess CSA preventive actions in others sectors of society is discussed.

Synthesis and characterization of Copper Oxide nanostructured by means of hydrothermal assisted by microwaves were studied in this work. The thermal treatment device was set up by using a domestic microwave oven and a hydrothermal chamber, specially adapted as a hydrothermal reactor. The obtained nanostructures of CuO have been characterized by X-ray diffraction (XDR) to determine its crystallinity; by field emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM-FEG) and transmission electron microscopy to characterize the morphology and single crystal nature of nanocrystals formed. The mechanism of nanostructure formed and nanostructure morphology of CuO were studied us a function of processing conditions. For this, the influence of microwave processing, the nature of chemical basis and presence/absence of polyethylene glycol (PEG) as template have been considered during the formation of nanostructured CuO. The chemistry reaction for attaining the nanostructure of CuO was studied using stereochemistry concept and computational quantum chemistry. The results had demonstrated that the formation of copper oxide nanostructure depend on the stereochemistry of the template, on the chemical base for hydrothermal treatment and on the use of microwave heating for hydrothermal synthesis.

In this work, we investigate the effect of dilution and frustration in the thermodynamic properties and the phase diagrams using the quasi-two-dimensional Heisenberg and Ising models. We use the Zubarev Green´s function formalism and obtain the magnetic properties of the quasi-two-dimensional antiferromagnetic spin ½ Heisenberg model. We determine the limit of the stability of the antiferromagnetic phase as a function of the concentration of the holes in the CuO2 plane and dilution of the Cu by Zn. We simulate the point of maximum of the phase diagram in the plane (T,z) following the experimental data for the La2-xSrxCu1-zZnzO4 compounds. In the Heisenberg model the effect of the frustration is simulated by the parameter λ=λ0(1-x/xc), which measures the interaction between the CuO2 planes. The effect of dilution present in the xy-plane is described theoretically by a small value for z through an effective interaction J(1-z) (mean field approach). We extend the present formalism to include long-range interaction in the antiferromagnetic one-dimensional Heisenberg frustrated model and verify the absence of magnetic order for p>1 (where p is the decay interaction parameter, i.e., Jn=J/np). We also study the thermodynamic properties of the quenched decorated diluted Ising model with competitive interactions, using the differential operator technique with the effective field. The decorated Ising model with competitive interactions used is herein to describe the magnetic properties of the copper-oxide plane containing superconductor compounds in the insulating phase (antiferromagnetic). The model consists of planes in which the nodal spins interact antiferromagnetically (JA<0) with their nearest-neighbors, and ferromagnetically (JF>0) with the quenched spins that decorate the bonds (simulating the Cu-O interaction), and distributed randomly over the two-dimensional lattice. The planes interact antiferromagnetically with weak-exchange interaction (i.e., ). Moreover, in our model some magnetic sites (atoms of Cu) are substituted by non-magnetic sites. We study the thermodynamic properties of the system and the limit of antiferromagnetic stability in the phase diagrams (T,p) and (T,z), for some values of the frustration parameter (α= J ' = λ ,λ = 10−5 A A J J A\JF) and magnetic field. We observe for some values α, the system presents a reentrant behavior in low temperatures, which also is reflected in the thermodynamic properties.

The genus Tabebuia in the family Bignoniaceae comprises about 100 species, several of which have medicinal, ornamental, and timber value, in addition to their environmental importance. These species produce large amounts of seeds, with a short viability period under natural conditions. In the present research, studies were developed on germination and conservation aspects of seeds in species of the genus Tabebuia. Initially, substrates were evaluated to be used in seed germination tests for the species T. aurea (Manso) Benth. & Hook., T. impetiginosa (Mart.) Standl., T. ochracea (Cham.) Standl., T. roseo-alba (Ridl.) Sand., and T. serratifolia (Vahl.) Nich. The following substrates were tested: on sand, on vermiculite, on sand+vermiculite, on paper (two sheets of blotting paper) and between sheets (two sheets of blotting paper under and one sheet over the seeds). For T. impetiginosa seeds, these substrates are suitable for use in germination tests. For the other species, the most suitable substrates were: on sand, on paper, and between sheets for T. aurea; between sheets for T. ochracea and T. roseo-alba; and on sand and between sheets for T. serratifolia. In another study we attempted to identify a suitable condition to store T. roseo-alba and T. impetiginosa seeds, as well as to evaluate methods to estimate alterations in the viability and vigor of those seeds. Different groups of seeds were placed in clear plastic bags, Kraft paper bags, and cans. The seeds were then stored for up to 300 days under laboratory, refrigerator, and refrigerated chamber conditions. Seed water content, germination percentage and velocity, and electric conductivity were determined at the onset of storage and thereafter at every 60 days. The best T. roseo-alba and T. impetiginosa seed conservation condition was obtained with cans maintained in the refrigerator. T. impetiginosa seeds can also be kept in plastic bags, paper bags, or cans when stored in refrigerated chamber. Seed vigor alterations in these species are initially identified based on germination velocity. In the third study, we evaluated accelerated aging effectiveness in detecting vigor variations in T. roseo-alba and T. impetiginosa seeds. Seeds of these species were submitted to accelerated aging under temperatures of 40 or 45ºC, for periods of 24, 48, 72, 96, 120, and 144 hours. After those periods, germination and plantlet emergence tests were conducted, and field emergence index values were calculated. We verified that accelerated aging is effective to detect seed vigor variations in T. roseo-alba and T. impetiginosa. When aging is conducted at 45°C, differences in viability and vigor occur first. Traits such as germination percentage and velocity, plantlet emergence, and incorporated biomass can be recommended as seed vigor indicators, using accelerated aging. Under more drastic accelerated-aging conditions, no correspondence is observed between data obtained in the field and in the laboratory.

Professionals responsible for education of children with disabilities not always find the way to make their family a partner. This study aims to identify and describe the behaviors of professionals that work in the school and family members that are propitious and maintainers of the effective and successful collaborative partnership. The study was carried out with four focal groups, composed exclusively either by family members or professionals, once there were two groups of family members (FAM1 and FAM2) and two groups of professionals (PROF1 and PROF2) of different schools. 13 family members and 18 professionals participate in the groups. In order to identify the principal components of this partnership two stages were carried out. In each stage two meetings were performed with each focal group, summing up 16 meetings. In Stage 1 the meetings aimed to identify the components of the collaborative partnership, in the first meeting, and to check the collected information in the range group in the second appointment. In Stage 2 each one of the focal groups was collated with the data obtained in the first stage, once family members were paralleled with the professional data and vice versa. The reactions to the data were registered, and afterwards checked in the second appointment. Through qualitative analysis the expected and desired behaviors of professionals and family members were identified and described to increase the probability of success and effectiveness of a collaborative partnership. The categories raised by the family members groups in relation to themselves were: to communicate with the professionals; to be responsible for the child s education; to keep adequate expectations; to accept the children s disability; to respect professionals. On the other hand, the family members expectations about professionals performance were: to communicate with family members; to communicate with other professionals; to be friendly; to separate personal problems from the professional activity; to promote student s development; to be attentive to family problems and to attempt to resolve them; to help family members keep suitable expectations; to incorporate to work suggestions provided by family members; to worry about the student out of school; to offer groups to parents; to respect students and family members; to offer orientation to family members. In their turn, the groups of professionals pointed the following categories in relation to the behaviors they expected of the families: to communicate with the professionals; to recognize the work of the professionals; to trust the developed work; to be responsible for the child s education; to believe in the child s development; to keep adequate expectations; to question the professionals properly; to certify the child s attendance to school; to visit the school; to take part in the activities. Concerning the performance themselves, the following categories were found: to communicate with family members; to show seriousness; to be sincere; to be impartial; to respect students and family members; to be aware of family members and students features; to motivate the participation of family members; to gather with family members; to show the family members the activities performed; to help family members keep suitable expectations. It is expected that, with the survey and the description of the categories, the professionals responsible for the education of children with disabilities and their family members can find their bearings in the search for the establishment of an effective and successful collaborative partnership.

In this paper data on catch, fishing effort and landings from the Brazilian baitboat fishery, together with information on vessel characteristics were analyzed aiming to: (a) describe the fishery and characteristics of the fishing fleet, analyze catch composition and spatial and temporal distribution of catches, fishing effort and catch rates of skipjack (Katsuwonus pelamys); (b) develop standardized indices of abundance for skipjack using generalized linear models (GLM); and (c) apply a nonequilibrium surplus production model for stock assessment of west Atlantic skipjack through the ASPIC program version 5.0. Skipjack is the most important species caught from Brazilian tuna fisheries; its catches comprise more then 50% of the total tuna catches from this fishery. The fishing area is located in the south and southeast regions of Brazil, from 20oS to 35oS, but fishing operations are carried out mainly between 28oS and 34oS. The highest catch rates are recorded in the south region during the first and fourth quarters and the smallest ones in the third quarter. Skipjack landings are made in Rio de Janeiro, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul states, with Santa Catarina being the most important landing place. The highest landings are recorded during the summer months (February and March) and the smallest ones during the winter months (August and September). The baitboats shows different characteristics; length of vessels varies from 15 to 49.5 meters. Skipjack catch rates from each vessel varies according with its size, which means that fishing power is a function of vessel size. The frequency distributions of skipjack CPUE are highly skewed with a relatively large proportion of zero observations. Standardization of skipjack CPUE (catch per unit of effort) was performed through generalized linear models, using delta-GLM methods, which involves fitting of two sub-models to the data. A first sub-model was applied assuming the binomial error distribution for the proportion of positive catches and a second sub-model was used for the positive catches assuming a different error distribution. Two alternative distributions were assumed for the positive catches, the lognormal and the Gamma distribution. Deviance tables were performed to identify the best set of factors and interactions that most adequately explained the observed variability in proportion of positive catches and positive CPUE. Geographical distribution (fishing area) and sea surface temperature together with the interaction year*GRT were the most important explanatory effects for the occurrence of a non-zero catch. On the other hand GRT and season, together with year*area, year*season and year*GRT interactions explained the most variability on the observed CPUE of positive catches. The standardized indexes were estimated using Generalized Linear Mixed Models, in which year, area, season, sea surface temperature, vessel length and GRT were included as main explanatory fixed effect factors and all first order interactions with year as random components. Delta-lognormal and delta-Gamma models showed a good fit to the data but narrower confidence intervals and small coefficients of variation were shown for standardized CPUE estimated by the delta-Gamma model. Results from these analyses show the importance of the study of CPUE and factors that have effect on its variations to understand the dynamics of this fishery. However not all factors that have an effect on variations in skipjack CPUE were considered, such as, bait species and amount of life bait, because this sort of information was not present in the majority of data available for analysis. A great amount of the information collected through logbooks are incomplete and imprecise, implying that institutions responsible for the implementation of this data collection system are not aware or do not recognize its importance as an instrument that makes possible to get information of great value for the management and utilization of fishery resources. Results of the stock assessment analysis provided an estimate of 26,930 MT for skipjack maximum sustainable yield, which is about 14% higher than catches taken in 1998. This estimated yield may looks like realistic but other parameter estimates seems to be unrealistic, suggesting that the west Atlantic skipjack stock is in an overexploited state, which may not be true. Considering the uncertainties and limitations about the data some of the parameters estimates may be imprecise. Therefore, results from this analysis should be cautiously used to make decisions on management measures for this fishery. A good stock assessment depends not only on the adequacy of the model available for the analysis but also on the quality of the data that the model is fitted to. Therefore, in order to have effective stock assessment for skipjack in future, an efficient system for the collection of data from this fishery shall be implemented. This data collecting system should include mechanisms for data verification, such as observer programmes to monitor catch, effort and other details of the fishing operations.

The washback effect of an assessment is a redirecting element not only on teaching and learning process, but on most student s and teacher s actions, manners, beliefs and perceptions inside and outside the classroom, influencing the values in a society in which a certain educational system is used. For this reason, investigating the impacts of an assessment means taking into consideration the possible variables that go through the teaching/learning context, present in the learning culture of an individual. The proficiency test in Portuguese Language Celpe-Bras, developed and applied by Brazil Education Ministry, has a different proposal from the adopted one in other proficiency tests. The Celpe-Bras, a communicative approach test, assesses proficiency through tasks that look like real communication situations. The aim of this work is to analyze the effects of this test in the learning culture of four applicants to the exam, showing the possible changes observed in their beliefs, actions, manners and perceptions about the test in three different moments: before the first contact with the exam, after the first contact with it (preparation phase) and after its carrying out. The data of this research are constituted by thirteen interviews conducted with selected applicants. From these interviews, twenty two excerpts were used in the analysis. Through the results, we expect to contribute with a relevant analysis about the learning culture of the applicants who have subscribed to this exam for the first time.

In the present study, we sought to establish a critical analysis of the centrality of work as a forming principle in Brazilian higher education. With this intention, we introduced a discussion over the concept of work through the ages until the emergence of the capitalist society, which brought the idea of regarding it as a forming principle of our own subjectivity and of our way of being in the world. Beside this, we outlined a reflection about the path of higher education, highlighting the historical transformations that have led to the creation of modern University, which in turns represents the origin of the models developed in Brazil, where such institutions emerged late. With basis on such reflection, we discussed some aspects of higher education in Brazil. We tried to rescue its roots, development and main characteristics, evaluating the extent of its past – and present – contribution to the reproduction of the insane way of life modern society has adopted, tied to the one-dimensional logics of work, which became deeper between the late 1970s and the beginning of the XXI century.

The object of this study is the integrated problem of lot sizing and scheduling of the soft drink production. Such problem consists of deciding how much to produce of each drink and in each period and in which sequence, in order to satisfy the demand and to minimize the costs of storage, backlogging and changeover. The set up times of the machines are sequencedependent, consequently the production scheduling is complex. The problem is capacitated, multi-item, with changeover times and costs dependent of the sequence. In this study we propose three mixed integer optimization models and solution approaches to solve the problem. The models are based in cases studies of a large soft drink facility, and a small facility. We developed relax and fix heuristics to solve de models. The results show that the proposed strategies are competitive when we compare with solutions of the facilities.

The low income of the illiterate population in Brazil was for a long time pointed as a consequence of its educational situation and cause of a gap between the highly sophisticated work market and a non qualified hand labor. The State, aiming to correct this disproportion through education, has started to create opportunities of access to education, targeting a better social justice level. The minimum income projects monetary help were not originally linked to the education. They used to target an income universal allocation in order to face unemployment and poverty. With time, the minimum income programs in Brazil have restricted the benefits supply to the families which had children in school age. The link between income and education was incorporated in order to join the idea that the State could not only furnish the benefit without no the beneficiary to learn anything from the process, as a counterpart. Besides that, that would be a way to make the education universal right possible, as it is determined by the Human Rights Declaration, Constitution, BDL and CTA. In São José do Rio Preto, one of the São Paulo State cities with better HDR (Human Development Rate) (0,834) and educational coverage in the country, the introduction of the School Fund Program had as its basis the same principles as the Federal Government School Fund Executive Program. The research evaluates and concludes the lack of any kind of special attendance to the families helped and the control, restricted only to the observing of the children frequency to school. Finally, through a questionnaire applied to the students, parents and teachers from Darcy Ribeiro City School and to the City Education Secretary we have evaluated the children school development before and after receiving the Fund, besides the idea the Education Secretary has towards the Program.

This master thesis deals with the involved aspects for the creation of a framework for connectivity in JAMP (Java Architecture for Media Processing). The conception of this framework aims to make possible the use of mobile devices by means of other wireless network technologies. Such technologies, as Bluetooth, used for the publication/localization of services registered in the JBroker, the broker of JAMP Platform developed in Java/RMI, as well as the communication of devices that make use of such technologies through this broker, had been used in the implementation and tests of the framework developed. The implementation aims to access, from devices with Bluetooth network interface, the available remote services in the Internet. These services are requested by mobile devices, such as PDAs, cellular or smartphones, that they consult access points, in Bluetooth communication. The access points consult the JBroker that returns a reference for the service to be consumed. The access points then direct the result to the mobile devices. The experiments developed in this work had been based on scenes where a mobile device, in Bluetooth communication, requests services to a point of access in a PC and this, saw TCP/IP, invokes remote methods in the servers who disponibilizam the services, saw Java/RMI. JAMP already all presented the mechanism of localization of services saw Java/RMI, however it did not present the extension developed with this work, where they had been created one proxy, that it is executed in the access point, and the use of services of the JAMP to break mobile devices that if communicate through technology of different net of TCP/IP. Being thus, its innovation is in the capacity of use of devices that make use of technology of Bluetooth net, being able to be extended to other technologies, without needing would reengeneering previously existing in the architecture.

Blown of films is one of the most important processes of polymers for packaging application. The final properties are strongly linked with the morphology developed during the processing. The relationship between process variables, morphology and final properties is extremely complex being strongly related to the rheological behavior of the polymer, principally for blown films. Nanocomposites constitute a new class of materials which present better barrier, mechanical and thermal properties and better performance for greenhouses films, without decreasing the optical properties and the conditions of blown film process, having great potential for packaging applications. Therefore, the aim of this work was to investigate the mixing variables on the blown film process that are most important on the morphology of High Density Polyethylene nanocomposites films and its relationship with mechanical and barriers properties. Two different screws profiles were used. The nanocomposite produced by the configuration was used to produce the blown films. The properties of the films showed a strong improvement compared to the neat polymer films.

The advent of grid computing made possible to access distributed resources, even when they are geographically spread or belong to different organizations. The most used environment for accessing these distributed resources is the Internet, a worldwide computer network based in TCP/IP architecture. Grid computing provides the infrastructure necessary for managing and communicating with the resources offered by different organizations. These organizations are also known as virtual organizations (VO's). Some of the applications used in these collaborating environments may have minimum requirements by quality of service (QoS). However, the "best effort" service, which is offered by Internet, is not capable to satisfy these QoS requirements. In this case, a different solution is needed, in order to provide guarantees related to the traffic in communication channels. This master thesis aims to apply the concepts of quality of service for networks in grid computing, providing end-to-end quality of service between grid computing applications. In order to achieve this goal, we investigate the use of commutation infrastructure provided by MPLS networks. Using traffic engineering mechanisms for routes determination, we aim to provide better control of data flows, improving the performance of distributed applications in geographically highly spread environments.

This work aimed to analyze the process of reformulation/creation of Teaching Courses in Chemistry of public universities of São Paulo to attend the new legislation. It was also observed the engagement of professors and students staffs in this initial forming process, looking at the reflexive paradigm of Donald A. Schön. The gathering of data in this qualitative research consisted in analyzing pedagogical projects and curriculum matrix of courses before and after that reformulation, as well as in interviewing personally coordinators of courses, teachers of the older subject Teaching Practice in Chemistry and Supervised Stage and three students of the conclusion year in nine different courses in the state. It was observed that this process of reformulation/creation occurred with a low involvement of the professors; in addition, in a general way, we can say that exist a strong diverse treatment related to these courses and the teaching occupation, diminishing them if compared to bachelorship course and researching activities. Excepting isolated cases, the professor staff of those courses demonstrates a low preoccupation with his teaching activity as well as to educate his students to become teachers according to the reflexive professional model. The activities of Teaching Practice as a Curriculum Component and Curriculum Stage are not detailed in some pedagogical projects, to the point that some coordinators do not know the nature of these activities or facts, such as, for example, the observing classes as a kind of stage is not relevant as a formative experience in the students opinion. There is a significant detachment among the units that teach the Chemistry and Pedagogical subjects as well as among the University and High School, that injured the forming of Chemistry good teachers. It was noticed to be necessary (and urgent) institutional changes in the direction of requiring that the professors be dedicated in equal responsibility to teaching activity, as occurs concerning to research.
