The search for alternative and sustainable solutions for the management of urban stormwater corroborated for the increase of Best Managements Practices (BMPs) use. However, despite this quantitative increase, BMPs have been inserted in the urban context without proper integration with the landscape, whether by legal requirements or by commercial exploration of sustainable urban development. This insertion can create abandoned areas with little or no maintenance, compromising the BMPs functionality and the relationship with the community. The aim of this study was to develop and apply guidelines for the preparation and execution of the landscape design on BMPs targeting their integration into the urban landscape. The guidelines were based on the Low Impact Development, the traditional method of preparation of landscaping design and international recommendations related to BMPs. They were synthesized in seven sequential project steps and applied to two existing infiltration plans in experimental campus watershed of the Universidade Federal de São Carlos - SP. As a result, the guidelines provided a freer design for BMPs, created an identity and multifunctionality, integrating open and green spaces to the hydrologic function.

The growing amount of data produced daily, by both businesses and individuals in the web, increased the demand for analysis and extraction of knowledge of this data. While the last two decades the solution was to store and perform data mining algorithms, currently it has become unviable even to supercomputers. In addition, the requirements of the Big Data age go far beyond the large amount of data to analyze. Response time requirements and complexity of the data acquire more weight in many areas in the real world. New models have been researched and developed, often proposing distributed computing or different ways to handle the data stream mining. Current researches shows that an alternative in the data stream mining is to join a real-time event handling mechanism with a classic mining association rules or sequential patterns algorithms. In this work is shown a data stream mining approach to meet the Big Data response time requirement, linking the event handling mechanism in real time Esper and Incremental Miner of Stretchy Time Sequences (IncMSTS) algorithm. The results show that is possible to take a static data mining algorithm for data stream environment and keep tendency in the patterns, although not possible to continuously read all data coming into the data stream.

The following Masters dissertation is a study of memories and cultural identities from the novel Nove Noites (2002) (NN), written by Bernardo Carvalho. The journalistnarrator of the novel tells a history about something he did not experienced: the suicide of the American anthropologist Buell Halvor Quain. Hence, the journalist searches for memories such as letters, photographs and reports of people lived with Quain in order to solve the referred suicide. In another narrative instance, we read a will let by a character that met Buell Quain in Brazil: Manoel Perna. My research hypothesis was about the entanglement between the narrators from diferents sociohistorical times should make clear diferents cultural identities and, consenquently, identifications to one cultural identity and not with another. Concerning to my research, I have demarcated as goals: i. Demostrating the memories and identity functioning in NN; ii. Contrasting and analysing the narratives instances; iii. Verifying cultural questions for the NN’s narrative structure. To explain these memories, I have based this study mainly in the Discurso da narrativa, from Gérard Genette (1995). The memories of the novel brings inside them other voices responsible for fragmenting the chronological narrative order and allow me to read the book by relating it to identity questions. Therefore, I have referred the narrator’s voices to their sociocultural point of view. Due to that, cultural studies were the basis of this Masters dissertation: A identidade cultural na pós-modernidade, Da diáspora (2003) and Who needs identity (2003), all written by Stuart Hall. These references were the main theoretical basis used in order to understand identities through narrative structures. This theoretical and analytical process support me to demostrate the identification as a nonexplicit game inside the memory narration from NN.

Water sludge is a solid waste produced during the water treatment. The volume of sludge produced in a water treatment plant can reach tons of material per month, depending of the quantity of water treated in the plant. Water sludge characteristics can vary depending of the water source and chemical products used in the water treatment. This material is rich in iron oxides, alum oxides, minerals and humic substances. Nowadays all this waste doesn’t have an application, being usually discharged in landfills, after a drying process, or into rivers. On the other hand, fluoride: an ion commonly founded in water samples from drilled wells. According to the current potability standard, administrative order number 2914/11 from Brazilian Govern Health Department, fluoride is necessary for water quality, being indispensable to avoid caries, primarily in children. However, in high concentrations – above 1,5 mg F?.L-1 –, fluoride causes health problems to the consumers, as dental fluorosis and skeletal fluorosis. Moreover, in a high concentration level, fluoride interferes or even hinders the application of this water to public supply, because most of the disposable technologies for fluoride removal have a high financial cost. That said, this work was planned to look for and combine a solution for both problems: utilization for water sludge and an alternative to fluoride removal with low cost. For this purpose, fluoride removal tests were done using fluoride standard samples in a jar-test equipment. These experiments were lead in different pH, to verify the pH influence in the fluoride removal process on the water sludge surface. After the experiments with the fluoride standard samples, a groundwater sample from the city of Capela do Alto, São Paulo state, was used to verify the efficiency of the material in a raw water sample with high fluoride, 2,8 ± 0,02 mg F?.L-1. The maximum adsorption result reached in fluoride standard sample was 0,36 ± 0,02 mg F?/g sludge, in pH 4. The minimum adsorption capacity was reached in pH 6, 0,30 ± 0,02 mg F?/g sludge. In the experiment with groundwater (pH 8,3), the maximum adsorption was 0,34 ± 0,02 mg F?/g sludge, showing the low pH influence in the fluoride adsorption onto water sludge.

This research analyzed, in the local power of São Carlos (SP), the connections between medical professionalism, urban and industrial development and the political centralization of the Brazilian nation state, which conditioned specific waves of interiorization of medical professionalism, as well as particular professional rip current. The focus is oriented to the period of 1889 to 1988, when have occurred three waves of interiorization of medical professionalism and two professional rip currents. The first wave (1889-1930) happened at the beginning of the Republic, in the context of a decentralized political system (coronelismo) and of a parallel growth of the São Carlos’ coffee production. This allowed the first impulse of the local urban economy, the emergence of some new public health and medical assistance services and the establishment of an initial but effective medical market. Some new physicians arrived in the locality, whose specialization was commonly in general practice. Very soon, these professionals were integrated into the local social stratification, working as liberal professionals and in the Santa Casa de Misericórdia de São Carlos. The second wave (1948-1966) was characterized by the local effects of the political centralization of the state and its new role in the Brazilian urban and industrial development as well as in the organization of a national health system. The preview alliance between physicians and the São Carlos’ coffee elite became less important than in the past. The central state became more powerful and begun to compete with the local elites in the countryside of Brazil. This is the moment of the medical reaction to the socialization of medicine, when local physicians create the Sociedade Médica de São Carlos. In this period, there was an important historical trend of young local citizens (born in São Carlos), who went out to study medicine, but returning back later to work as physicians. As their antecessors, these young professional worked in the general practice. Otherwise, the third wave (1970-1988) arose since the reaction of physicians against some problems with the medical assistance of the state pension system. Indeed, the period also verified the organization of a new hospital, Casa de Saúde e Maternidade São Carlos, as well as the construction of a new building for Santa Casa de Misericórdia. São Carlos observed a relevant urban and industrial growth, paralleled by the increase of groups of industrial workers and urban middle classes. Aside the interiorization of medical faculties, professionals who have studied in these new faculties arrived São Carlos, not to act in general practice, but as specialists. Since a tied and smaller medical market as well as the condition of exporter of patients, São Carlos became polo of attraction for professionals and patients from other localities. This favored the creation and expansion of the UNIMED São Carlos, which responded to the higher demand for local medical services, the crisis in the medical assistance of the pension system and new obstacles from the market of private medical group sector. Both UFSCar and USP São Carlos intertwined with the growth of the locality, as well as with physicians, in order to increase the hospital services of São Carlos. As professional rip currents, between the first and the second waves, and between this one and the third wave, some reverse social processes acted historically in an opposite way in relation to each mentioned wave, favoring the occurrence of the next one. At the end of this period, emerged a combination of historical factors, such as: increase of the medical group sector (specially the UNIMED); the worst of the state medical assistance; political movements of physicians; emergence of the collective health; different role of industries in the Brazilian development; democratization; and decentralization of the national health system, which led to the creation of SUS.
