Psychological distress, influenced by various sociopolitical and institutional changes that impact student persistence and well-being, has become a growing challenge. The objective of this study was to calculate the prevalence of psychological distress and depression, as well as to correlate social and clinical markers with these phenomena among students at a federal public university. This quantitative, cross-sectional, and descriptive study was conducted with 174 undergraduate and graduate students at the Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCar), São Carlos campus. The prevalence of psychological distress was 77.9% and that of depression was 56.6% — measured by the Self-Reporting Questionnaire (SRQ-20) and Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), respectively — while the combined prevalence of both conditions was 78.2%. Age group and prior health history were directly related to these phenomena. Therefore, this study contributes to the development of health promotion strategies that consider the identified social markers.

“Me ajuda a olhar!”: a qualidade da escola pelas crianças

Water pollution from stressors, such as emerging contaminants and agro-industrial waste, poses a challenge to aquatic ecology in urban-rural environments. These compounds alter biogeochemical cycles, affect plant communities, and can favor the growth of populations of invasive species that are more tolerant to stress. Although macrophytes play fundamental ecological roles, such as nutrient cycling and habitat provision, the uncontrolled growth of invasive macrophytes, such as Hedychium coronarium, suppresses native species and alters the structure of riparian ecosystems. This work is structured in three chapters. Chapter 1 presents an integrated review of water, macrophytes, biological invasion, and pollution, with emphasis on the effects of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and vinasse in aquatic environments, and the implications for biodiversity conservation. In Chapter 2, the population of H. coronarium in the Monjolinho reservoir (São Carlos, SP) was characterized using morphometric descriptors and biomass-volume relationships, which highlighted its plasticity and capacity to colonize degraded environments. Chapter 3 evaluated the growth of H. coronarium under controlled exposure to SDS (0.5 g L⁻¹ and 1.0 g L⁻¹) and vinasse (10% and 20%), both with and without dry biomass of Salvinia auriculata as mulch. DSS did not significantly reduce H. coronarium biomass compared to the control, but the presence of S. auriculata mulch altered growth responses, with a hormetic pattern. For vinasse, there was a significant reduction in H. coronarium biomass, and in the presence of S. auriculata mulch, biomass values remained close to those of the control. The results indicate that stressors exerted negative pressures on the growth of H. coronarium and that mulching with S. auriculata modified plant growth patterns under chemical stress conditions, demonstrating that pollutants alter the growth of this invasive species and that plant residues can interfere with the modes of action of these agents on macrophytes, with implications for management strategies and mitigation of impacts in aquatic ecosystems.

Steel cellular beams are characterized by profiles with sequential circular openings in the web, resulting in structural elements capable of spanning large distances, providing greater flexural stiffness, and enabling faster construction. Worldwide, studies on cellular beams are largely limited to normal strength steels. In Brazil, research on this type of beam is scarce and relatively recent. Thus, the use of high-strength steels, with yield strength exceeding 460 MPa, in cellular beams remains unexplored. The application of high-strength steels contributes to sustainability due to the reduction of the carbon footprint. Although their use in cellular beams is attractive from both structural and sustainability perspectives, such steels are not addressed by NBR 8800 (ABNT, 2024). The same limitation applies to cellular beams. This research aims to investigate the influence of steel strength variation on the failure modes and structural behavior of high-strength steel cellular beams under simply supported conditions. For this purpose, cellular beams were modeled using the ABAQUS® software, and the results were compared with the design procedures of BS EN 1993-1-13 (ECS, 2024). Given the lack of experimental data on high-strength steel cellular beams, the numerical model validation was conducted in two stages: considering high-strength steel solid-webbed beams and cellular beams made of normal strength steel. The sensitivity analysis of geometric imperfections and residual stresses in high-strength steel cellular beams showed that the influence of residual stresses decreases as steel strength increases. Moreover, the results indicated that the residual stress model accounting for the manufacturing process of normal strength steel cellular beams can be effectively applied to describe residual stresses in high-strength steel cellular beams. The parametric study demonstrated that increasing steel strength may alter the failure mode, as numerical models exhibiting interaction between local and global instabilities may develop only global instabilities as steel grade increases. The use of high-strength steels proved more relevant for less slender cellular beams, in which local failure modes governed the load-bearing capacity. For slenderer beams, effectiveness was reduced, as the increase in resistance capacity was often marginal compared to the gain associated with the higher strength steel. Furthermore, the use of reduced web-posts due to closely spaced openings, combined with the absence of stiffeners, may lead to the occurrence of web-post buckling under compressive stresses.

Modern fables often use zoopoetics to question human conventions, distancing themselves from the explicit morality characteristic of classical models. Topics dear to contemporary society, such as social gender roles, can be addressed in a less direct manner when related to the human context. This dissertation aims to analyze the construction and function of laughter in the work You’re an animal, Viskovitz (1999), by Alessandro Boffa, a writer and biologist, based on the premise that his zoo(auto)biographical narrative uses laughter to encourage reflections on animal otherness and gender norms. Through a theoretical framework centered on Sigmund Freud and Arthur Schopenhauer's perspectives on the laughable and the comic, short stories from the work are examined based on unconscious structures, language, and subjective constitution. The analysis demonstrates that the friction between ethological precision and the projection of human conflicts generates a zone of productive incongruity, eliciting both laughter and critical reflection in the reader. The male narrator, who is repeatedly flawed, serves as a vehicle for an ironic critique of male chauvinism, narcissism, and the patriarchal system that socially and culturally structures gender relations. Philosophical, scientific, and religious reflections are added to the debate on gender. It is concluded that Boffa's literary project uses laughter as an instrument of knowledge and transformation of the reader's gaze, revealing social contradictions and existential dilemmas.
