Cinema, cultura e geografia: a construção cultural e espacial dos filmes Rio e Rio 2
(Universidade Federal de São Carlos, 2026-06-18) Oliveira, Stephani Machado de; Mariano, Neusa de Fátima; https://lattes.cnpq.br/5003743301847104
Starting from the use of cinema as a teaching resource in the classroom, this study highlights the effort to move beyond traditional teaching practices in schools, emphasizing the need for education to adopt resources connected to students’ realities, such as cinematic productions, whose reach has expanded significantly. Image production, influenced by the media industry, sometimes seeks to represent the real world through film; therefore, there arises a commitment to analyze the narratives created through critical reading, especially when they are used as teaching and learning tools. This research seeks to analyze how the films Rio and Rio 2 contribute to understanding the spatial and cultural perceptions of specific regions within Brazilian territory. In other words, the general objective is to understand whether and how these films can be considered didactic and pedagogical resources for the teaching of Geography. Based on this question, the specific objectives include analyzing the narratives developed in the films, as well as their representations of Brazilian spaces and culture. Engagement with both films allows for several observations within the field of Geography, including the human–nature relationship, the processes and effects of urbanization, social issues, biodiversity, environmental preservation, and other relevant spatial phenomena studied by Geography. The research adopts a qualitative approach, grounded in a literature review and a critical analysis of the narratives of Rio and Rio 2 . Scenes related to geographical themes were selected in order to evaluate their potential as teaching resources in Geography education. The representations found in the narratives broaden understanding through the interpretation of images and contribute to a critical analysis of stereotypes about Brazil, while recognizing cinema as an industry driven by capitalist interests. This study concludes that the use of cinema as a teaching and learning tool enables reflection and encourages critical analysis of films in educational institutions, promoting not only a critical perspective on reality, but also on space from a geographical perspective.

The technological advancement of machining processes and the increasing demand for dimensional accuracy require high-performance cutting tools with extended service life. However, cutting tools that are not properly prepared reduce process efficiency, leading to increased energy consumption and higher production costs. Individual insert preparation can be performed manually using a metallographic polishing machine. Nevertheless, the manual procedure presents inherent limitations, including low repeatability and a strong dependence on the operator’s experience to control variables such as contact pressure, polishing speed, and contact time, resulting in geometric inconsistencies that accelerate tool wear. This study presents the conceptual design of a semi-automatic device for polishing cutting inserts using a metallographic polishing machine, aiming to address this technological gap. The adopted methodology comprised a review of abrasive finishing processes, cutting tool manufacturing methods, and tool materials, followed by the establishment of design requirements based on the ALP-2 metallographic polishing machine (Alcrisa). The proposed device is based on a mechanism analogous to a slider-crank system. It is driven by a 25 W electric motor equipped with a gear reducer and a variable frequency drive (VFD), enabling precise control of the insert translational speed during polishing. The normal force is applied through a spring-loaded assembly consisting of a screw and compression spring, designed to provide a contact pressure ranging from 10 to 20 N/cm². The supporting structure was designed in aluminum to ensure adequate mechanical strength and corrosion resistance. The design results demonstrate the feasibility of a simple system capable of standardizing the polishing process on a metallographic polishing machine while controlling key process parameters, such as normal force and translational speed, thereby providing greater operational repeatability than manual polishing. As this study is limited to the conceptual design stage, prototype fabrication and experimental validation of the proposed device are recommended for future work.

Precarização, preconceitos e resistências na institucionalização da educação a distância em instituições públicas de ensino superior

In recent years, Distance Education (DE) has expanded significantly in Brazilian higher education, especially after the creation of the Open University of Brazil System (UAB). Despite this expansion, its incorporation into the academic, administrative, and pedagogical structures of Public Higher Education Institutions (PHEIs) remains marked by tensions, disputes, and limitations that hinder its institutional consolidation. This thesis analyzes how prejudice and resistance, the precarization of teaching work, and perceptions of quality influence the process of institutionalizing DE in PHEIs, seeking to understand the factors that hinder or foster this movement. Grounded in historical-dialectical materialism, in dialogue with the Freirean framework, the study adopts a qualitative-descriptive approach and is developed through methodological triangulation, combining a systematic literature review, an online questionnaire with 245 valid responses, and 14 semi-structured interviews with faculty members from public institutions. The results indicate that prejudice against DE remains associated with the idea of lower academic quality and with the persistence of hierarchies between teaching modalities. They also indicate that resistance to the modality assumes different meanings: in part, it is sustained by prior judgments and by the defense of the superiority of face-to-face education; in part, it is constituted as a critique of the concrete conditions under which DE was implemented and maintained in public universities. The study also shows that the precarization of teaching work, expressed in the dependence on external funding, grant-based remuneration, the fragmentation of pedagogical functions, and insufficient institutional recognition, directly affects the place occupied by DE in PHEIs. With regard to quality, the data indicate that it depends on effective institutional conditions of provision, involving pedagogical design, infrastructure, technical-pedagogical support, faculty education, work organization, and academic recognition. The results of the study support the argument that the institutionalization of DE in public universities occurs in an uneven and unfinished manner, marked by contradictions that connect expansion, precarization, partial recognition, and the persistence of prejudice and resistance. It is concluded that its consolidation requires stable funding, the valorization of teaching work, the organic incorporation of the modality into the institutional project of universities, and the confrontation of the forms of disqualification that still affect DE.

The growing commercialization of low-cost jewelry and ornaments has raised public health concerns due to the presence of potentially toxic metals, such as lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd), in concentrations that frequently exceed regulatory limits. Given the limitations of conventional analytical techniques, such as the slow turnaround of Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP OES) and the low stratigraphic sensitivity of X ray fluorescence (XRF), Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) emerges as a promising alternative. This work presents a bibliographic review on the use of LIBS for identifying contaminants in jewelry, based on studies that demonstrate the technique's effectiveness in complex metallic matrices, such as waste electrical and electronic equipment (e-waste). The essential role of chemometrics is discussed to mitigate the matrix effect and enable the recognition of compositional patterns. The review indicates that the ability to perform depth profiling allows for the distinction between surface coatings and the actual composition of the pieces' core, preserving the aesthetic integrity of the ornament. It is concluded that the integration between plasma physics and multivariate analysis algorithms establishes LIBS as a strategic Green Analytical Chemistry tool, with high potential for application in health surveillance systems and rapid market screening.
