A tradução audiovisual: uma análise comparativa de títulos de filmes do inglês para o português segundo a teoria funcional

Abstract

This study focused on investigating audiovisual translation based on Christiane Nord’s functionalist theory. To this end, ten American film titles and their translation process from English into Portuguese were analyzed. Considering a film title as a text whose function is predominantly instrumental and appellative, the study examined how translation choices respond to extratextual factors, such as market demands and the expectations of the target audience within the target culture. A comparative and contrastive analysis was conducted between the original titles and their respective translations and adaptations for the Brazilian context. The research adopted a qualitative approach: on the one hand, a bibliographic review was carried out to provide the theoretical framework; on the other, the selected corpus was analyzed. The findings indicate that the abandonment of literal equivalence in favor of cultural adaptation and marketing strategies is a recurring practice aimed at ensuring both communicative effectiveness and commercial appeal in the Brazilian audiovisual market.
