This thesis is based on an ethnographic research on family dynamics in military villages located in the border region in the northwestern Amazon of Brazil. Our starting point considers the idea that the Brazilian Army seizes the "family" while native category which expresses the collective of the organization (the Military Family), prescribing relations to be modeled on solidarity and respect among its members (affections and moral duties that the military regard as “natural” behaviors of the family), which also extend to relations between their spouses/children and other military families, who perceive themselves as "relatives" in this universe (the physical proximity of these people within the villages - military sites - and the daily relations sharing would allow a family experience beyond consanguineous relationships). Through this, it is observed that the family is the object of constant care and it is sought to think the Army, on the one hand, doing and undoing familiarization through a system of standards and prescriptive behaviors (ideal model) which intervene in everyday relations of people who are part of this collective, and which aim to ensure the functioning of the military community as a family ruled by principles of hierarchy and discipline (structuring dimensions of the institution). On the other hand, the study explores, faced with this apparent uniformity of life in the barracks, how family members (especially the wives of officers and sergeants) think themselves in this system and also make and break family, stimulating a series of relationships within a conviviality in military towns, engaging in conflicts, gossiping and alliances. Throughout the thesis, therefore, we describe how both (institutions and individuals) flexibilize the family(ies), in order to produce other specific configurations of a military kinship.

The multi-core processors represent the industry response for the physical barriers encountered during the development of computing processors during the last decades, and brought new advances on computing system performance. The complex superscalar unicore processors with high frequency clocks gave way to processing units with two or more cores in just one encapsulation, generally with low clock frequencies, allowing one or more execution threads per core. On this context, the existing programming models using serial and concurrent paradigms do not allow exploring the real potential provided by the new hardware elements incorporated, generating a necessity of new programming methodologies that does allow exploring parallelism aggregated by the use of multi-core processors. This work presents LX-MCAPI, a library based on modern IPC (Inter-Process Communication) and memory sharing mechanisms, developed over the hypothesis that message passing is a viable, flexible and scalable abstraction, compared to conventional programming methods using shared-memory on multi-core systems. LX-MCAPI offers a message-passing, zerocopy memory sharing mechanism between processes and ready to use scalability patterns to facilitate the process of abstraction and construction of applications. It has performed well in therms of transmission latency and transfer rate on x86-64 and ARM environments.

Ichnofossils are abundant in the sandstones of the Botucatu Formation, Paraná Basin, of Neocomian age. This formation covers much of the Midwest, Southeast and South of Brazil, and other countries in South America. Several sandstone samples containing trace fossils were collected and deposited in the paleontological collection of the Departmento de Ecologia e Biologia Evolutiva (DEBE) of the Universidade Federal de São Carlos (UFSCar). In this work, trace fossils attributed to arachnids, i.e. ichnogenera Paleohelcura Gilmore, 1926 and Octopodichnus Gilmore, 1927, were studied and their presence is recorded for the first time in Brazil. The aim of this study was to infer how different environmental conditions such as moisture, texture, substrate inclination and even behavioral aspects of the organisms can affect the structure of the traces left by different arthropods. To do this, several neoichnological experiments were made, with six arachnids (two Tityus serrulatus, one Lycosa sp., one Loxosceles sp., and two individuals of the family Gonyleptidae) and five individuals of other invertebrate classes (three insects, one isopod and one diplopod). The experiments consisted on making the animals walk on a tray with sand of different grain sizes, different inclinations and different moisture levels. The results of these experiments, which showed different trace morphologies, according to each imposed condition, proved the influence of these conditions on the morphology of the footprints and on the behavior of the studied animals. In addition, these results showed how, in some situations, for example, in an uphill movement in a slope of 30° of inclination, it’s possible that animals with highly different track’s shapes leave very similar tracks, thus making much more difficult the identification of the track’s producer animal through the analysis of the ichnofossils. It was also possible to prove how the moisture level and the substrate inclination are important for the tracks’ preservation.
