Contamination of surface water by polluting compounds can cause various environmental damages due to interference in the ecosystem, affecting local biodiversity, the quality of rivers and lakes, in addition to being harmful to human health. Toluene is a commercially important toxic compound, commonly used as a diluting agent and solvent, which can be present in pesticide formulations. In areas destined for agriculture, the use of pesticides can contaminate not only the soil, but also rivers and lakes, through surface runoff. This work sought to isolate bacterial strains and select, among these, bacteria with the ability to biodegrade toluene and potential for use in bioremediation processes. The strains were obtained from two samples of water from a lake that is subject to contamination due to its proximity to a large area intended for agricultural cultivation. 4 strains of bacteria were isolated for the tests and the biodegradability was verified using the colorimetry method by analyzing the color of the redox indicator 2,6-dichlorophenol indophenol, which has a blue color when oxidized and is colorless when reduced. This color change indicates the enzymatic activity of the bacteria and thus biodegradability. To analyze this color change, photographs of the tests were taken and, with the images obtained, a discoloration scale was created, determining qualitative indicators. Subsequently, slides were prepared with each of the strains using the Gram staining method to observe the morphology under the microscope. From the analysis of the images obtained, it was observed that the synergistic tests of bacteria 3 with bacteria 4 showed potential for biodegradation of toluene. Thus, the synergism of these microorganisms potentiated the biodegradation effect of the compound. This indicates that these strains may be promising for bioremediation of contaminated sites.

The use of industrial robotic manipulators has gained significant prominence in modern times, and is also a major bet for the future of industries. Its use includes casting, welding and painting, load handling, product inspection, and displacement, among many others. Despite being widely used already, an extensive study continues to be carried out so that their tasks are executed in an optimized manner. To optimize performance, degrees of freedom can be used, which determine the mobility of the robot and, when in excess, result in kinematic redundancy. Redundancy resolution is the process of defining the joint positions among the infinite possible solutions. There are two types of resolution: local and global. This work used local resolution, which calculates the cost function gradient for all time instances to find the best joint configuration. The results were compared with a non-redundant manipulator, and both had a PID control. The manipulator was modeled using the Simscape Multibody package, and supporting functions were built in MATLAB. The results obtained show that the redundant manipulator had lower final effector position errors as well as significant reduction in joint torques.

Longevidade diferencial de fêmeas adultas de Apis mellifera
(Universidade Federal de São Carlos, 2023-04-05) Capodifoglio, Andresa Raquel; Nunes, Francis de Morais Franco; https://lattes.cnpq.br/1974857490729279; https://lattes.cnpq.br/5335418987133273
Adult females of Apis mellifera bee species exhibit variation in their longevity, with queens and laying workers (such as anarchists, pseudo queens, and queenless/orphaned workers) living longer than non-laying workers, indicating a relationship with reproductive aspects. In this study, we conducted a literature-based survey to identify potential factors associated with differences in life expectancy between these phenotypes. For queens, we observed that longevity of approximately two years is associated with oxidative processes, vitellogenin production, intestinal microbiota composition, immunosenescence, lipid composition of membranes, telomerase activity, and exclusive feeding of royal jelly. However, no data were found to explain longevity in laying workers. Therefore, we analyzed comparative gene expression data between laying and non-laying workers to identify potential marker genes for longevity. We found that non-laying workers showed higher expression of genes related to xenobiotic resistance, while pseudo queens had more abundant and preferentially expressed genes involved in the regulation of ecdysteroid hormones. Paradoxically, some candidate genes for longevity markers in queens showed opposite gene expression profiles in all phenotypes of worker layers. Based on these findings and using non-laying workers as a reference, we suggest that the mechanisms associated with greater longevity in queens do not overlap with those associated with greater longevity in laying workers.

Surface integrity is a critical concept in the field of mechanical engineering, which refers to the quality and properties of a material's surface after it has undergone a manufacturing process. Therefore, controlling the quality of the material surface is essential since it can significantly affect its performance in aspects such as fatigue strength, wear resistance, corrosion resistance, and mechanical properties. The focus of this study was to develop and train an artificial neural network to predict the surface roughness of hardened steel after cylindrical turning, based on its hardness and machining parameters. Additionally, the behavior of the neural network was studied for different iterations and datasets to optimize the results. Experimental data previously obtained by the research group for O1 tool steel were used to validate the neural network. Finally, it was possible to develop an artificial neural network based on data from various hardened steels found in the literature, resulting in an estimated surface roughness of the O1 tool steel with an approximate error of 20%. Furthermore, it was determined that the best combination of data volume for training and validating the neural network is between 45-60%.

Banana is one of the most consumed and produced fruits worldwide, in Brazil it has wide gastronomic acceptance, so that only 1% of Brazilian production is exported, therefore, it is a fruit of great internal importance. The main pest of the crop is the banana borer known as Cosmopolites sordidus [(Germar, 1824) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae)]. In the adult stage, this insect is dark, almost black, and in the young stage the larvae build galleries in the rhizome, causing damage to the plants. The present work aimed to evaluate different concentrations of Beauveria caledonica in oily solution. This entomopathogenic fungus is little studied worldwide for the control of the insect pest. B. caledonica spores and blastospores were evaluated in emulsifiable oil, to increase the pest's mortality potential, through spraying on the insect's back, which were kept in individual trays with food for 23 days in BOD and evaluated daily. Dead insects were collected and relocated on Elisa plates to confirm death by contamination. The results obtained were subjected to analysis of variance and Tukey's test at a 5% level using the R software, and graphs to visualize the mortality rate were made using the Excel program. Treatment 8 was the one that presented the best result, totaling 37 dead out of 60 insects tested from the 10th day after spraying, however, it did not differ statistically from treatment 10, therefore, it was possible to state that the two treatments were the best among those tested and can be recommended for future research involving the entomopathogenic fungus. It was concluded that treatments 8 and 10, with a concentration of 1x108 conidia/mL and 5x107 blastospores/mL, caused the highest insect mortality rate. Blastospores from Beauveria caledonica also functioned as controls for Cosmopolites sordidus. And the use of emulsifiable oil increased the insecticidal activity.

A diversidade dos Pimplinae (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) na Mata Atlântica, Brasil
(Universidade Federal de São Carlos, 2023-04-05) Higa, Priscilla Tominaga; Dias, Angélica Maria Penteado Martins; https://lattes.cnpq.br/8637344058859147; https://lattes.cnpq.br/2237791342984283
The Pimplinae subfamily is considered one of the oldest in the Ichneumonidae family, consisting of more than 1,700 species in 77 genera around the world. In the Neotropics they are still little known and only about 414 species have been described so far. The need for knowledge about this fauna is emerging in the tropics and many studies involving descriptions of new species, distribution and biology of Pimplinae have been carried out. The objective of this study was to contribute to the knowledge of the Pimplinae fauna with emphasis on the Atlantic Forest (Brazil), a biome that is under constant threat of anthropic occupation. The thesis was divided into three chapters, respectively: Chapter 1. Synthesis of knowledge about the Pimplinae genera that occur in Brazil. We found 19 genera and 87 species belonging to the Ephialtini Tribe and 6 genera and 53 species belonging to the Pimplini Tribe in Brazil. New contributions on the distribution, diagnosis, phylogeny and biology were presented for each genus of Pimplinae. Chapter 2. First inventory of Pimplinae (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) diversity along the latitudinal gradient of the Atlantic Forest. The results showed a trend towards greater species richness of Pimplinae in the tropics than in the subtropics and the low diversity and richness found in the northeast region may be related to greater habitat destruction. Chapter 3. Characterization of the idiobiont and cenobiont faunas of Pimplinae (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) on islands and continental area off the coast of the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. A higher proportion of idiobiont species was found on three islands (Ilha Imboassica, Ilha da Gipóia and at high altitude points on Ilha Grande) and a higher proportion of cenobiont species on two islands (Ilha do Pingo D'água and at two points of low altitude of Ilha Grande). In other places there was the same proportion of wealth of the two strategies. The idiobiont species tended towards greater richness on islands farther from the mainland. Idiobiont specimens of the genus Neotheronia were richer in morphospecies; Pimpla and Zaglyptus were more abundant; among the cenobionts, the genus Zatypota had the highest morphospecies richness; species from other cenobiont genera seem to depend on the availability of local resources. Other considerations relating the Pimplinae fauna found on these islands and on the mainland were presented.

The Brazilian transport matrix is mainly composed of road transport, meaning that the country has more than 1.7 million kilometers of highways, of which 66% have problems in their state of conservation. Monitoring the quality of these roads is precarious and difficult due to their length. Therefore, several studies propose alternative forms for this monitoring, one of them being the use of accelerometer signals present in smartphones to detect irregularities on the road. Thinking about this detection method, the present study aimed to analyze the response signal of a half-car model when subjected to known inputs that represent road irregularities: bump, pothole, roadstuds and raised crossing lane. The analysis of the results allowed the identification of patterns in these signals, as well as the effect of the vehicle's speed variation on the signals, allowing the use of this knowledge in future studies that aim to identify road irregularities from accelerometer data.

The aim of this study is to explore a central topic in financial mathematics: the internal rate of return. To this end, the study begins by introducing basic concepts of financial mathematics and their possible everyday applications. As we delve deeper into the properties of the internal rate of return, we can see that its calculation is not simply based on concepts learned in primary education. Therefore, we seek to relate this science to Numerical Calculus, employing methods such as Bisection, Newton-Raphson, and Secant in order to determine internal rates of return that have been applied in payment sequences stemming from real-world financing situations.

The development of this monograph is based on the desire to build something meaningful to contribute with a more interesting, motivated, and interactive teaching strategies. In addition, it has as an attribute the production of a product that can be an instrument to face traditional teaching. But this was not by chance, as it was the result of intense reflection on the importance of studying Biology, especially during a material developed for the Diversity and Plant Evolution 1 classes, where the idea of a game about the life cycle of plants was born, which was later improved until arriving at the present proposal. Therefore, this TCC is a research report on the use of the game “Plant Life”. The game was inspired by the card game “Gin Rummy” and includes four groups of plants: Bryophytes, Ferns, Gymnosperms and Angiosperms. Each deck consists of 42 cards, 10 from each plant group and two jokers. The cards form the life cycle of plants: sporophyte, meiosis, spore, germination, gametophyte, female gamete, male gamete, fertilization, zygote, and embryo. The objective of the game is to form the greatest number of life cycles and thus achieve a higher score among the participants. The application was made in a discipline of a Degree in Biological Sciences, in the form of participant observation. The results, which were collected from the students' flexible responses, show that the game provoked motivation, interest, teamwork and was configured as an instrument for reviewing, deepening, thinking, and reflecting on the content, satisfied with the confrontation and combat of plant blindness through education.

Public universities have a limited budget, which results on the acquisition difficulty of some equipment needed for laboratory practices. Due to the shortage of equipment, activities need to be adapted or classes divided so that everyone can participate. The discipline “Principles of Industrial Metrology” of the Mechanical Engineering course at UFSCar, depends on a collection of test pieces and measurement accessories that are expensive, since they must have tight geometric and dimensional tolerances, such as low flatness error, for instance. One solution is to improve the geometry and surface finish of manufactured parts or equipment using an industrial lapping machine, which also reduces surface roughness peaks, improving contact between the part and the granite surface plate, which is the reference surface for measurements. Considering the difficulty in acquiring a commercial lapping machine, it is intended to reduce acquisition costs through the development of a machine design, based on existing patents, publications and commercial machines to determine the necessary constructive elements and their parameters. The intent is to develop a detailed project, documented in technical manufacturing drawings, specifications of commercial components and process sheets so that a lapping machine can be built for the Mechanical Engineering department at UFSCar.

In the absence or low efficiency of domestic sewage treatment, the excess of carbonaceous organic matter and nutrients leads to pollution of water resources. To verify the treatment efficiency of the SANEJ and Potunduva Wastewater Treatment Plants, located in the county of Jaú (SP), the parameters measured for operational control in the influent and effluent sewage of the studied plants were analyzed in 2020 and 2021, which are: temperature, pH, DO, turbidity, BOD, COD, TSS, TDS, FSS, VSS, TSS, FSS, VSS, SDV, NT, N-Ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, total phosphorus, phosphate, total coliforms and E. coli. The obligation of domestic effluent treatment and consequently the improvement of water resources quality is legally foreseen, as described in CONAMA Resolutions 357/2005 and 430/2011; and in the state of São Paulo through Decree 8,468/1976. To comply with these laws, some of the parameters that compose them were evaluated in the second semester of 2021 and the first semester of 2022, which are: temperature, pH, turbidity, DO, BOD, TDS, NAmmonical, nitrite, nitrate, total phosphorus and E. coli. These parameters were analyzed upstream and downstream of the effluent discharge point into the receiving water body of the SANEJ and Potunduva Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), which have, respectively, the treatment types: CASS and RAALF. A comparison was made between both WWTPs to determine which one presented the highest treatment efficiencies. For BOD, the average efficiency results at SANEJ WWTP and Potunduva WWTP were, respectively, 93% and 94%, while for COD the average efficiency removal at SANEJ WWTP was 93% and 95% at Potunduva WWTP. Besides that, for the Ammoniacal Nitrogen the first WWTP showed an average efficiency removal of 68% and the second one of 74%. Concluding that the Potunduva WWTP has a higher efficiency in removing carbonaceous organic matter and nutrients, although the SANEJ WWTP has more parameters in compliance with the laws, due to its receiving water body being Class III, allowing higher concentrations of some parameters. Finally, some improvement points were suggested in this research, such as the insertion of a recirculation system of treated effluent in the Potunduva WWTP, in order to increase the efficiency of N-Ammonia removal.

(Universidade Federal de São Carlos, 2023-04-05) Alves, André Hallwas Ribeiro; Cerri, Ricardo; https://lattes.cnpq.br/6266519868438512; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-2582-1695; https://lattes.cnpq.br/7234224268038252; https://orcid.org/0000-0001-8869-1149
Interaction data is obtained by observing and recording interactions between objects. The use of interaction data makes it possible to solve many complex problems. Currently, there are several ways to use this data to produce solutions. One of them is to predict new interactions based on existing interactions. Machine learning methods can be used to accomplish this task. The study of interactions between objects is essential in several areas of knowledge, such as recommendation systems, analysis of interactions in social networks, the pharmaceutical industry, and bioinformatics. Machine learning is a subarea of artificial intelligence where algorithms are developed with the ability to learn and execute automatically through training and exploration of a previously provided dataset. In this work, we developed two methods based on Predictive Bi-Clustering Trees (PBCTs) for the prediction of interactions in interactions datasets related to the areas of medicine and bioinformatics. We highlight that global approach-based multi-label methods such as PBCTs, can learn and predict all interactions of an object in a single task and explore the relationships between object spaces. Initially, we build a hybrid learning model between PBCT and Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost), wherein the first stage PBCT is used to generate partitions in an interaction matrix. In the second stage, an XGBoost learning model is induced in each partition to reduce the imbalance between positive and negative interactions in outcome predictions. Data from positive interactions indicate the occurrence of an interaction, and data from negative interactions indicate that it did not occur, while data from unknown (unlabeled) interactions indicate cases where there is no information about interactions. To take advantage of the unlabeled data in the PBCT induction procedure, we propose a semi-supervised adaptation in the split function of the PBCT, thus being able to work with labeled and unlabeled data, with different levels of supervision and imbalance. Both introduced methods had their performance evaluated based on evaluation criteria that considered efficiency in predicting interactions and computational performance and through a comparative study with the original PBCT. As a result, both produced methods showed promising through an experimental procedure, presenting contributions to the literature and paving the way for the advancement of the state-of-the-art.

There is a lack of interest from humans towards plants, and that phenomenon gets the name of Plant Blindness. This phenomenon describes how human beings fail to notice the plants that make up the environment, or who believe that plants are merely decorative devices, do not recognize their real importance for the existence and permanence of life in our ecosystems. This also has an affect on education with the devaluation of the teaching of Botany, which ends up being considered uninteresting. Coupled with that, schools offer mostly theoretical classes, which are tiresome and use many scientific names, which again lead to the increase in the botanical blindness phenomenon. Considering the situation, it becomes clear that there is a need to find new ways of teaching science, ways that will value the discipline of Botany. One way that was found was the use of didactic materials to engage and encourage students on their pursuit of knowledge in this field. The goal of this project is to survey and analyze the didactic materials found in the literature. With that established, a research was conducted on the different platforms (Scielo, Google academic, UFSCar Institutional Repository) which resulted in 21 articles. The didactic materials found showed a wide variety of forms, such as: artistic pieces, cartotheque, making of specimens, games, laminate, model/mockup, plants or parts of them, digital resources and videos. The themes also varied a lot among the different works. The didactic materials that were found in more quantity were the games. The analysis showed that the students approved the materials as a way of teaching them. It made them more interested on the subject, and brought an easiness to the study of Botany, showing that these materials are alternatives that should be used.

Observing that many educators have sought to use diverse teaching methodologies as a motivating tool in Physics classes, it becomes significant to study their potential, as well as to explore possible associations of different strategies, analyzing their complexities and applicability as a didactic resource. In this sense, this research sought, based on the analysis of remote Brazilian laboratories, to evaluate the limits and possibilities of associating digital information and communication technologies and experimentation. Four Brazilian laboratories that are active from their experiments were analyzed; scripts to support teachers; technological resources used for control; and availability of internet access. Due to the pandemic scenario of COVID-19, started in 2020 and reopening of schools in partial format, in 2022, Brazilian remote laboratories had their availability negatively affected, since initially twenty-five experiments were accounted for, however only thirteen experimental objects and nine teaching materials were available. It was observed that Astronomy is the area of Physics most contemplated in Brazilian remote laboratories, followed by the areas of Mechanics and Electricity. During the research, it was noticed the need to prepare the professors so that the use of the experimental apparatus can reach the objectives of a scientific learning with meanings. Nevertheless, all the analyzed equipment presented resources capable of assisting in the students' teaching-learning process.

Aplicação de redes neurais para previsão de demanda de energia elétrica

In the early 2000s, the Brazilian electrical system was less developed than it is today and depended much more on hydroelectric generation, as 80% came from it. A study conducted by the Ministry of Mines and Energy revealed that the possibility of an electricity deficit at the end of the 1990s was at levels above acceptable levels and the balance between supply and demand was precarious. For this reason, a program to rationalize the use of electricity was created, divided into two stages. The first was rationalization, and if the risk of demand greater than supply was not reduced, the government would trigger the second stage, rationing. Therefore, in order for better planning and more efficient production to occur, avoiding excessive production or production below demand, it is essential to use and improve methodologies for forecasting electricity demand. That said, the current work aims to develop a computational support tool for strategic planning in electricity generation and distribution systems. In the proposed methodology, a short/medium term forecasting system will be implemented for the state of São Paulo, using computational techniques of artificial intelligence based on artificial neural networks (ANN). For this purpose, electricity consumption data on the grid (MWh) was used, acquired through the electronic portals of the National Electric Energy Agency (ANEEL) and Energy Research Company (EPE).

“Which children's literature works to use in the classroom to ensure a feminist education for children?” This work is built around this question. From it, there arises the need to search for and analyze children's literature works that can offer this possibility. For this purpose, it was necessary to start the journey with a bibliographic research to be able to conceptualize the use of children's literature for children's education and how the feminist identity is formed. It was also necessary to search for children's literature works that somehow addressed themes of the feminist movement, such as: prevention of sexual abuse, empowerment, deconstruction of beauty standards, etc., and analyze, through the Content Analysis method, the works showing their potentialities. Throughout the research, it was concluded that children's literature is an excellent tool for critical formation of children and youth, and the mapping showed that we have excellent works available, the analyzed works proved to be competent and full of possibilities.

In human history there are many records of diseases that took on pandemic proportions. From the bubonic plague in the Middle Ages, to the Spanish flu in the 20th century and the emergence of the new coronavirus in recent years. A mutation that occurred during the replication of the wild coronavirus (SARS-coronavirus), possibly allowed the infection of humans. The disease caused by this modified virus became known as Covid-19 and was responsible for the deaths of more than 6 million people worldwide. Worldwide debates took place about prevention methods and the pandemic brought with it a range of doubts. Much has been discussed about the effectiveness of vaccines that were proven to be ready for use at a remarkable speed due to several studies that were already underway even before this disease became a pandemic. Despite the scientific criticism applied during the development of these vaccines, there was great concern in the general population regarding the safety of using these medications, a fact that was also incited and encouraged by several political leaders. From the wide possibilities of information dissemination in the modern world, it is common to observe the emergence of misconceptions that end up being widely disseminated, a fact defined as “misconceptions”. It is in the midst of this scenario that we find a paradox in which, on the one hand, there is an excess of information available, on the other hand, there are indications of a lack of scientific validation and veracity in the instructions. With this guideline, this work sought to identify common sense notions about the SARS-Cov-2 pandemic and, based on this, propose a didactic sequence that aimed to contribute to overcoming misperceptions about demography and viral biology, using of basic genetics concepts as a teaching strategy in a didactic sequence proposed for the 9th grade of Elementary School. It is considered, therefore, that improving aspects of teaching-learning evolution during basic education can help to overcome conceptual limits commonly observed in the population and contribute to the formation of critical citizens.
