With the population growth and the accelerated expansion of urban centers, often unplanned, providing drinking water with proper availability, quality and pressure to the entire Brazilian population becomes a difficult task in this context. In view of the above, this work addresses the topic of water losses in supply systems with focus on the distribution networks, gathering information on the definitions of real and apparent losses, its main causes, economic and environmental impacts, and some of the main combat strategies against the losses. The goal is to carry out a bibliographical review regarding the state of the art on the topic of water losses and demonstrate the multidisciplinary nature of relevant topics necessary to understand and combat the phenomenon of losses in distribution networks. The collection of searched data and academic papers demonstrate that at a national level, Brazil has high loss rates and several studies show that the reduction of losses can make significant contributions to the supply capacity of the distribution networks and can reduce the economic and enviromental losses related to water for the the entire society.listelement.badge.dso-typeItem, Formação médica com adoção de metodologia ativa de ensino: considerações individuais e reflexivas sobre o processo(Universidade Federal de São Carlos, 2024-01-19) Galego, Lucas dos Santos; Del Ciampo, Ieda Regina Lopes; https://lattes.cnpq.br/6099153790836529; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7862-0221; https://lattes.cnpq.br/9442723554014631; https://orcid.org/0000-0003-1601-1874Introduction: This work is built in an autobiographical and critical-reflective narrative about the medical course of the Federal University of São Carlos, presenting the facilities and difficulties of self-directed learning proposed by the institution, its importance as a methodology and some points that can be improved according to the author's opinion based on the experiences lived. The accelerated and disorderly growth of cities has intensified the construction of precarious settlements around urban centers, since public actions and services have been more concentrated in these places. Despite the visible importance of these services for public health, a history of public policies, laws and the definition of a legal framework to achieve maximum service in these regions, the universalization of sanitation is still a challenge due to the lack of accessibility to services. The PAC (Growth Acceleration Program) in 2007 was a program of great importance for the basic sanitation sector, since more financial and structural investment was directed towards the country, but it was not enough. The aim of this study was therefore to gather data on the sanitation situation in Brazilian slums, in order to identify the current situation and the difficulties faced in universalizing these environmental services in outlying areas. The lack of planning in city management and the constant increase in irregular housing have resulted in improvised solutions, greater real estate irregularity and the inaccessibility of companies and consortia to provide sanitation services. The complexity of the challenge of providing basic sanitation in the country is aggravated by the unequal distribution of these services, predominantly affecting slum dwellers, the illiterate, the poor and other vulnerable social groups. The access deficit in these groups highlights the need for more inclusive and universal public policies. The progress made in terms of sanitation in the communities is notable in the region that already has greater access to services, showing that the other regions of the country still need attention from the public authorities.listelement.badge.dso-typeItem, Uma breve jornada de mim: uma narrativa reflexiva sobre a graduação de Medicina na Universidade Federal de São Carlos(Universidade Federal de São Carlos, 2024-01-19) Reinert, Gabriel Juvenal; Adler, Ubiratan Cardinalli; https://lattes.cnpq.br/7366046180927920; https://lattes.cnpq.br/1132885419451347This reflective narrative encapsulates my transformative six-year journey pursuing a Medicine degree at São Carlos Federal University. Within this context, hydrological modeling is essential to understand flow patterns and risks associated with extreme events such as floods. Accordingly, this study focuses on hydrological modeling in the Embu Mirim River Basin, located in the state of São Paulo (UGRHI-06), with a focus on predicting critical precipitation intensities and, consequently, peak flows. Using the I-PAI-WU method, an enhancement of the rational method for basins between 2 and 200 km², the research aims to analyze and predict maximum water flows in the region. The methodological process included basin delineation using geoprocessing tools, adopting the calculation algorithm specified for the chosen hydrological model, and utilizing rainfall equations from various sources for municipalities within the basin. Although the results indicated a very small variation in precipitation intensity values for Itapecerica da Serra (an increase of 2%), a significant increase (28%) in critical rainfall values was observed for Embu das Artes, demonstrating a noteworthy alteration in the rainfall pattern for this locality. Consequently, the peak flow results followed the same trend. It is noteworthy that, in this modeling, a hypothetical scenario was considered, disregarding the presence of downstream flowregulating structures such as dams. Finally, the I-PAI-WU method proved to be of simple application, requiring basic data such as precipitation intensity, drainage area, runoff coefficient, and spatial distribution factor of rainfall, making it suitable for small and mediumsized basins and short-duration rainfall events.listelement.badge.dso-typeItem, Uso de bentonita como aditivo impermeabilizante em argamassa polimérica cimentícia(Universidade Federal de São Carlos, 2024-01-19) Paula, Baptista Leme; Luz, Ana Paula da; https://lattes.cnpq.br/3470395641242374; https://lattes.cnpq.br/6743987406424251Waterproofing is one of the most crucial stages in civil construction. Recent studies have reported significant improvements in the waterproofing behavior of mortars containing bentonite. However, the addition of high percentages of this additive can result in a reduction in the consistency and fluidity of mortars, affecting the hydration process of Portland cement and the final properties of the products. In this context, this dissertation aimed to evaluate the use of activated sodium or calcic bentonite as a low-cost waterproofing additive in the preparation of optimized polymeric mortars. For this purpose, the preparation of a commercial mortar and others formulated (based on ratios of 3.5:1 and 3:1 – ratio of solid:liquid components) containing varied amounts (0-6 wt.%) of activated sodium and calcic bentonite was carried out. The chosen bentonites were characterized, and the performance of the mortars was evaluated through tests of fluidity, water absorption, mechanical resistance, watertightness tests, and microstructural analysis. The results indicated differences in the chemical composition of the bentonites, with activated sodium having smaller particle size, higher reactivity, and, consequently, three times greater swelling (25 ml/2g) than calcic bentonite (8 ml/2g). In general, all analyzed mortars showed reduced flow with the addition of bentonites. Furthermore, a significant reduction (6.17%) in water absorption was observed in samples containing 6wt.% of activated sodium bentonite compared to the reference mortar. Watertightness tests confirmed the applicability of mortars prepared with 2wt.% of calcic or sodium bentonite. The incorporation of up to 2wt.% of activated sodium bentonite into the commercial formulation resulted in an 18.6% reduction in water penetration after 48 hours under positive pressure of 0.25 MPa.listelement.badge.dso-typeItem, Ensino de química nos anos finais: relato de aplicação de uma sequência didática envolvendo o modelo de Schroedinger e a distribuição eletrônica(Universidade Federal de São Carlos, 2024-01-19) Tonscheis da Fonseca, Isadora; Silva, Adriana de Oliveira Delgado; https://lattes.cnpq.br/2707979913713089; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-6545-8480Chemistry teaching in the final years of elementary school is done within the science discipline. In the ninth year, according to the BNCC, students should learn about atomic models, emphasizing the evolution process of these models over time. One topic usually addressed within this ability is electronic distribution through the Linus Pauling diagram. In this context, the objective of this work was to develop a didactic sequence in order to present Schroedinger's atomic model and, through this, explain the origin of the Linus Pauling diagram for ninth year students from a private school in Sorocaba. The didactic sequence included some themes of quantum mechanics, and featured: a previous activity, an expository class, the elaboration of an electronic distribution model and a final activity. The analysis of the responses to the activities showed that there was advancement in the understanding of the concepts of quantum mechanics by students, even at the introductory level. The atomic representations designed by them after the sequence corroborate the perception of advancement in the understanding of the atomic structure. In addition, the concrete model helped students better understand the new concepts, both during their development and their use to exercise electronic distribution. The application of the sequence allowed to conclude that students in the final years are able to learn concepts of modern physics and that the conceptual discussion in this type of content is very enriching for the maturation of the teaching-learning process. Through these discussions, the exchange between peers and development of the concrete model, students have the possibility of achieving meaningful learning, connecting new concepts to the old and advancing beyond mechanism associated with memorization processes.listelement.badge.dso-typeItem, Formação de treinadores da elite do futebol masculino brasileiro(Universidade Federal de São Carlos, 2024-01-19) Souza, Leonardo Sampaio de; Souza Júnior, Osmar Moreira de; https://lattes.cnpq.br/9176123942671062; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-2915-5634; https://lattes.cnpq.br/6415616631526736; https://orcid.org/0000-0001-5490-0854The top tier soccer coaches of the male brazilian teams have a plethora of specific knowledge to act in thein field, such knowledge was acquired through study and practical experiences. Those studies are the focus of this monograph, conducting a review of previous information and, then, analyze the formation of the coaches that worked in the clubs of the A Series in the Brazilian Male Soccer Championship 2023. Therefore, the research objective consists in interpret and analyze the formative process of the soccer coaches that worked in said championship. We used qualitative methodological bases, conducting documental and bibliographical research, respecting the obtained information using the documental technique to expose collected data in the most evident way. Then we conducted the analysis, categorizing and adding the obtained results with the courses from the considered institutions, looking for the general characterístics surrounding the coach profession in Brazil. The CONMEBOL and UEFA confederations have established minimal requirements to federations and institutions within each country, qualifying their soccer coaches in different levels. These courses aim to elevate the technical and tactical patterns of playing, and even with the standardization of courses there are differences in cultural formation regarding styles and approaches from coaches. That is due to the way they played and learned throughout their lives, making them unique and different in the plethora of technical and tactical knowledge passed on the elite brazilian soccer players, creating a diversity of technical and tactical applications that are seen within the field.listelement.badge.dso-typeItem, Plano de gerenciamento de resíduos sólidos em instituições públicas de ensino superior: uma análise documental e identificação de melhores práticas(Universidade Federal de São Carlos, 2024-01-19) Silveira, Bianca Cristina Francischinelli da; Sanches, Roberta; https://lattes.cnpq.br/2689928196471334; Saavedra, Yovana María Barrera; https://lattes.cnpq.br/6850307175821218; ttp://lattes.cnpq.br/2904274798141684Public higher education institutions in Brazil are legally obligated to develop Solid Waste Management Plans (PGRS), emphasizing environmental responsibility and sustainable waste management. Thus, this study was conducted through documentary analysis of the PGRS at the Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM) and the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE), following the guidelines of the National Solid Waste Plan (PNRS) and other applicable regulations. Both institutions were selected, and the analysis was carried out based on items established in a checklist, in addition to using the SWOT matrix. The analysis of both plans revealed gaps, particularly concerning environmental liabilities, shared responsibility actions, and the scope of waste types on campuses. It was observed that few Brazilian public universities have an identifiable online PGRS. In this context, collaboration between universities and government bodies becomes crucial to align policies with the institutions' needs and capacities, promoting an integrated and sustainable approach to solid waste management. For future research, it is suggested to analyze the implementation of PGRS in international universities and different types of educational institutions, seeking a better understanding of their effectiveness in waste management and handling.
