IPMC electromechanical behaviuor using platinum layer aiming green economy
(Universidade Federal de São Carlos, 2024-09-06) Dardis, Thiago Petrilli Maffei; Scuracchio, Carlos Henrique; https://lattes.cnpq.br/0896060959622431; https://lattes.cnpq.br/6555000363761645
Ionomeric Polymer-Metal Composites (IPMCs) are smart materials formed by an electroactive polymer membrane coated on both sides by noble metal electrodes. When an electrical stimulus is applied, an electric field is generated between electrodes, and solvated ions migrate inside the polymeric membrane, causing an internal pressure gradient and bending the device. Despite numerous advantages, it is exceedingly expensive to use noble metals, such as gold and platinum. In addition, the deposition process generates a large amount of toxic waste. Thus, in this work, a Nafion®-based IPMC with a reduced platinum layer (PRIPMC) was prepared and electromechanically tested, comparing it with a reference IPMC (RIPMC). The analyses were performed under precise relative humidity (RH) control. Blocking force and current response were used to evaluate its performance, and the morphology of the Pt layer was evaluated through Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The PR-IPMC presented a 60% thinner electrode layer. The devices performed better when RH = 90%. However, there is just 40% less blocking force compared to R-IPMC. Besides, the reduced amount of platinum complex used to obtain the device represents a saving of reactants and less waste generation, with satisfactory mechanical performance

This study investigates black representation and aging in São Carlos-SP, between 2021-2024. The research analyzes the experiences of black elderly people in spaces such as the Open University for the Elderly, the Senior Citizens' Community Center, and the Municipal Center for Afro-Brazilian Culture, seeking to understand how media representation, through photography, influences the aging process of black and non-black elderly people. In view of this, our objective is to analyze how media representation, through photography, influences the aging process of black and non-black elderly people. In more specific terms, we seek to: identify and discuss the conceptions of aging of the research participants; considering the photographs taken by the participants, analyze how these images impact their perceptions of aging; and understand the specificities in the experience of aging based on the racial identification of the participant. This is a qualitative study that combines semi-structured interviews and the use of photographs as a means of discussing the memories of the subjects involved. In theoretical terms, we draw on Thematic Analysis in the Psychology of Photographs and Interviews, the Sociology of Race Relations, and Cultural and Postcolonial Studies. It is understood that representation in the media is not just a matter of entertainment, but rather of social justice and cultural, historical, and symbolic recognition. The fight against stereotypes and the promotion of non-racialized sociabilities are pillars for confronting inequalities, including those related to aging and respect for memory.

Industrial exhaust systems are of extreme importance for the proper functioning of an industry. Responsible for removing polluting gases from an internal environment to the external environment, industrial exhaust fans have the function of transporting air with the objective of controlling temperature, humidity, moving particles, and other environmental elements to the outside through air displacement. For this to be possible, the fan must be coupled to a system composed of motors, shafts, and bearings. For this system to operate, the components must be capable of functioning in the given environment, as many of these environments are considered corrosive and abrasive, leading to surface wear of the components and, eventually, system failure. One component that must be considered is the bearings, as they are responsible for moving the fan shafts and must withstand high loads, high speeds, and vibrations. Lack of maintenance and misalignment of the fans are some of the causes of surface defects in bearings and, consequently, the bending of the device. Since bearings are made of an articulated structure, they require materials that can withstand, in addition to loads, high speeds and large numbers of rotations, requiring materials with high fatigue resistance and hardness. The most commonly used materials for manufacturing these devices are steels. Among the different types of steels in the materials field, the most used for bearings are high-carbon steels and tool steels. Due to the presence of carbon and other alloying elements, these materials exhibit good hardness and fatigue resistance. In addition to steels, another important material for the proper functioning of bearings is lubricants. Responsible for reducing friction between the rolling surfaces of the bearing, lubricants function by replacing direct friction (metal on metal) with fluid friction (metal with a thin layer of lubricant), thereby increasing the bearing's service life and preventing structural damage. Thus, this study seeks to select alternative steels and lubricants applicable to bearings through the GRANTA Edupack software (for steels only) and classify the best option selected using the TOPSIS method. For the steels, the properties important for application in bearings were considered in two scenarios: reference scenario and priority scenario. Among the options presented, the cold-work AISI D3 steel (C: 2.00% / Mn: 0.30% / Si: 0.25% / Cr: 11.50%) received the best classification, and for the lubricant, LGMT 2 lubricant, whose thickener is lithium soap based on mineral oil, ranked highest.

The famous Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP) is a challenge that often arises in large companies that handle deliveries, and a new variable is being added to this issue: drones, small unmanned aerial vehicles. Their use has contributed to a new way of thinking about the classic Traveling Salesman Problem. It is now possible to make deliveries with a delivery person and a drone working together to mutually assist each other. This work will address a variant of the problem, called Parallel Drone Scheduling with the Traveling Salesman Problem (PDSTSP). The goal of this new problem is to integrate the use of a drone into a delivery route that was previously served only by a human delivery person. While the person follows the route designed by the Traveling Salesman, they no longer need to visit certain customers because the drone will cover them. Specifically, this work will explore the question of which pre-selection model better chooses the customers that the drone should visit and return directly to the origin. To perform this comparison, two algorithms will be developed: a greedy algorithm and a random algorithm. Python libraries will be used to solve the TSP. Finally, we will obtain a value corresponding to the time it takes for the last vehicle to return to the origin after completing its tasks. The results indicated that the greedy algorithm performed better in the pre-selection of nodes.

The main objective of this study is to investigate the role of the Brazilian state in the international governance of refugees between 1949 and 1964. The period is characterised by the emergence of the international legal framework for the protection of refugees (1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). The empirical case investigated was the process of Brazil's reception of stateless Russians expelled from China in 1949. The documents produced by the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the 1950s were analysed. They are stored in the collection of the Historical and Diplomatic Museum at the Itamaraty Palace (RJ). The exchanges of correspondence (letters and telegrams) between the Representative Office in Rio de Janeiro and the Consulate General of Brazil in Hong Kong between 1947 and 1959 were examined. Through these records, the project sought to understand the selection criteria and the reasons for accepting these refugees in Brazil. It sought to investigate how these actions constructed the figure of the desirable refugee, especially when it came to elements such as body, gender, religion, marital status, qualifications and professional occupation. As a result, it was found that the humanitarian motivation concealed the Brazilian government's economic and political interests in bringing professionally, morally and religiously qualified people to Brazil.

Spectroscopies are among the most widely used analytical methods in the world, serving as a reference for bromatological analyses, i.e., those aimed at determining the chemical composition of food, nutritional value, calories, physical, chemical, toxicological properties, among others. The objective of this work is to conduct a literature review on the use of near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy in these analyses, highlighting its advantages and disadvantages. Based on the results found on Google Scholar and Capes Journals platforms, it is observed that NIR can be applied to forages, seeds, grains, pods, and silages, where its results indicate whether the sample is fit for consumption or not, in addition to determining parameters such as crude protein content, nitrogen content, dry fiber, moisture content, total ash, crude fiber, and crude fat. The use of chemometrics is essential for quantification via NIR, as NIR spectra lack selectivity, thus multivariate calibration methods such as principal component regression (PCR) and partial least squares regression (PLS) are crucial for the quantification of substances and parameters. To perform multivariate calibration, it is also necessary that reference analyses be used to correlate the spectra (NIR) with the property values found by the reference method. Considering the practicality, cost, and high analytical frequency of the technique, the importance of NIR spectroscopy in bromatological analyses is evident.

Um estudo sobre testes Flaky em projetos Python
(Universidade Federal de São Carlos, 2024-09-06) Tararam, Gabriel Mari; Endo, André Takeshi; https://lattes.cnpq.br/4221336619791961
Understanding the behavior of automated tests is crucial for improving software development practices. This study focuses on investigating the incidence of flaky tests in Python projects. The research involved analyzing a diverse set of Python projects to address the proposed research questions. The results indicated that 19.44% of the analyzed projects exhibited flaky tests, a significantly higher rate than the 4.5% reported by Gruber et al. (2021). The analysis showed that the majority (85.1%) of the identified flaky tests depended on the order of execution, emphasizing the need to ensure independence between tests to minimize the chance of flakiness. Non-order-dependent \textit{flaky} tests were less frequent but exhibited inconsistencies mainly due to dependencies on external APIs and execution time limits of libraries. These findings suggest that test stability can be compromised by external factors, such as the availability of external services and the variability in responses from these APIs. Future work could be carried out to expand the FlaPy tool to enable the installation and verification of a broader range of projects.

Reinforced concrete slabs are very common elements across the various types of constructions. In general, their reinforcement is made up of steel bars, which posses high tensile strength, compensating for concrete’s deficiency in resisting such force. However, this material also has some desavantages, with its susceptibility to corrosion and high self-weight being two of the most prominent. Consequently, alternative materials are increasingly gaining traction in the market, which aimes for improved performance with reduced resource expenditure. In this context, glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars have been under study as substitutes for steel reinforcement in concrete slabs due to their advantages such as low self-weight, high corrosion resistence, and versatility in geometry and machanical properties. Therefore, this work undertook the stuctural analysis of concrete slabs reinforced with GFRP bars. To achive this, slab modulations with different values of fck, spans, and environmental aggressiveness class were created. Based on these modulations, their dimensions were carried out, making it possible to compare the weight of reinforcement and concrete consumption between slabs reinforced with GFRP and conventional steel, aiming to analyze the possible reduction in the use of resources and the viability of this new material in the current market. As a result, it was found that slabs reinforced with fiberglass bars have similar values to slabs reinforced with steel, especially for smaller spans, which shows that they are a promising alternative for structural design.

Cannabis Sativa L. is a herbaceous plant from the Cannabaceae family, cultivated for millennia for various purposes. Since the earliest records of its use in papermaking in China, the plant has been utilized for textile, medicinal, ritualistic, and recreational purposes. To understand its therapeutic potential, it is essential to comprehend some fundamental aspects, such as the plant's morphological structure, different varieties, and the various bioactive compounds, including the entourage effect and the endocannabinoid system. In Brazil, the debate around cannabis' potential uses has intensified, especially concerning cannabinoids like tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD), which offer promising therapeutic applications. The prohibition and stigma surrounding marijuana, resulting from restrictive policies of the 20th century, have limited scientific research and the development of therapeutic products. However, the advancement of scientific evidence worldwide has driven regulatory changes regarding the therapeutic use of cannabis in Brazil. In addition to traditional and therapeutic uses, cannabis also has unconventional applications (in construction, textiles, phytoremediation, agriculture, biomaterials, food products...), expanding its potential for use and contributing to a revision of public policies and regulations in the country. The plant is a rich source of bioactive compounds that can be explored for the development of new drugs and therapeutic products, using advanced biotechnological techniques for the extraction, modification, and synthesis of cannabinoids. Furthermore, cannabis shows promising applications in areas like bioremediation, where it can be used to decontaminate polluted soils and environments, taking advantage of its ability to absorb heavy metals and toxins. The biotechnological exploration of cannabis in Brazil, combined with scientific progress and appropriate regulation, has the potential to drive innovations in the pharmaceutical and agricultural sectors, promoting sustainable and economic development.

The aim of this project was to investigate the structural behavior of buildings assembled from precast concrete with double-height ceilings on the first floor façade. To this end, extensive numerical model simulations were carried out using TQS® software. In this way, variables such as the position and geometry of the columns, the free façade span and the number of floors of the building were parameterized in order to take into account all the project parameters. Therefore, the goal achieved at the end of this work was to establish correlations between the variables adopted and the behavior of the structure in relation to its global stability and its need for reinforcement. In this way, we sought to deepen our knowledge of behavior and propose design recommendations for the execution of this type of prefabricated building, which is being widely used in commercial and residential buildings today. Finally, qualitatively, it was found that buildings with larger façade spans were less expensive to manufacture, although they were more sensitive to the need for reinforcement in the façade columns.

Tailoring the composition of the AA2017 to reduce its hot cracking susceptibility during LPBF
(Universidade Federal de São Carlos, 2024-09-06) Arias, Nicolas Rojas; Gil Coury, Francisco; https://lattes.cnpq.br/8609825406277730; Gargarella, Piter; https://lattes.cnpq.br/4641435644243916; https://lattes.cnpq.br/1250421395653549
Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) holds significant importance and research interest because of its capability to fabricate metallic components with intricate geometries that are challenging to replicate using traditional manufacturing methods. However, only a limited number of alloys are commercially viable for LPBF due to the processing conditions and characteristics of the alloys. This issue is particularly critical for alloys with wide solidification ranges such as wrought aluminum alloys, which may exhibit poor LPBF processability. For instance, previous experiments with the AA2017 alloy revealed its unsuitability for LPBF due to susceptibility to hot cracking. This study aimed to alter this alloy composition by incorporating additional elements that reduce the solidification range, facilitate grain refinement, and prevent crack formation during LPBF. The impact of different alloy element additions on the solidification range and phase formation was assessed via thermodynamic calculations. Compositions based on AA2017 were designed using the CALPHAD method and subsequently produced via gas atomization. The Design of Experiments methodology guided the selection of appropriate processing parameters to achieve crack-free parts with optimal structural integrity. Various characterization techniques were employed to examine the microstructural and mechanical properties. A new composition based on AA2017 was produced, enabling the construction of high-density, crack-free LPBF parts. X-ray diffraction analysis and microscopy techniques revealed that the improved processability of the new composition is attributed to its shorter solidification interval and a more fraction of liquid in the final stage of solidification with the presence of eutectic Al+Al3CeCu regions, which not only help to prevent crack formation but also enhanced the material's mechanical strength, as confirmed by the mechanical tests.

Human development has intensively exploited natural resources over time, and sustainability aims to transform this pattern to ensure responsible resource use and preserve them for future generations. In the construction sector, waste management (C&D waste) is a significant challenge, especially with the requirements of the National Solid Waste Policy (PNRS), which mandates municipalities to create C&D Waste Management Plans and oversee waste generators. Compared to international practices, Brazil still faces challenges, such as the lack of pre-demolition audits and waste traceability—critical aspects in industrial warehouse projects, which lack sustainable management models. In response to this scenario, this dissertation proposed a C&D waste management tool for industrial warehouse construction sites, based on extensive bibliographic and documentary research. Legislation, standards, and resolutions, both national and international, were reviewed, along with academic articles and environmental certifications focused on C&D waste management. To consolidate the information, a comparative matrix was used, in which 699 records were entered. Of these, 183 were considered highly relevant for the tool’s development. The results highlight practices such as the use of modern construction methods and efficient supply chain planning for inventory control and the promotion of resilient secondary materials markets. Comparative analysis of standards, resolutions, and certifications revealed discrepancies in waste management between Brazil and international practices. Based on this, 111 micro C&D waste management indicators were proposed for construction sites, and 64 macro-level improvement opportunities were identified to guide future studies. Going forward, the tool is intended to be applied across different construction sites to gather feedback from field teams, thus refining the proposed indicators and contributing to sustainable construction waste management in industrial projects.

Estudo da reticulação e propriedades mecânicas da blenda CM/CR
(Universidade Federal de São Carlos, 2024-09-06) Souza, Pedro Zangrossi de; Scuracchio, Carlos Henrique; https://lattes.cnpq.br/0896060959622431
The mechanical properties of the elastomeric blend of chlorinated polyethylene (CM) and polychloroprene (CR) were studied in the proportions CM: CR 90:10, 70:30, 50:50, 30:70 and 10:90, respectively called A, B, C, D, and E. The formulation of the blends was developed to minimize any variables other than the polymer content, guaranteeing the feasibility of industrial application on a large scale and in the short term, and the properties required to meet automotive standards. The choice of peroxide type and content made it possible to match all the samples to the same specification and achieve the proposed objectives. The samples were prepared in two mixing stages, first in a closed mixer and then in an open mixer, to equalize the processing history. Using the same curing system ensured a difference of around 10% in t50 and t90 in all polymer proportions. Complete vulcanization was achieved in less than 2.5 minutes. Hardness, tensile strength, elongation, and tear strength increased as the CM content increased. The elastic modulus and cost increased in the opposite direction.

Preferência sensorial entre café bebida dura e mole
(Universidade Federal de São Carlos, 2024-09-06) Boni, André Vinicius Contrin; Verruma-Bernardi, Marta Regina; https://lattes.cnpq.br/3470912236544684; https://lattes.cnpq.br/8633571359876014
This study aimed to evaluate the preference between a hard coffee drink and two soft drinks (special 1 and 2), as well as purchase intention. The coffee beans were roasted and ground and the coffee drink was prepared. The colorimetric analysis of roasted and ground coffee beans was carried out using the Minolta Chroma Meter portable colorimeter. To evaluate preference between coffees, 102 consumers were used, who evaluated their preference for color, aroma, flavor, body and overall impression, followed by the purchase intention test. The data were evaluated using analysis of variance and, when significant differences were detected between the means, the Tukey test was performed (p≤0.05).The results regarding the instrumental color of the beans showed that hard coffee had a low saturation value (7.26) and the special ones with higher values and all coffees had a °hue located on the axis between 45.47 and 48.14°. The results of the preference test showed that in relation to color, there was a significant difference between the samples, with the hard coffee drink obtaining greater preference. For flavor preference, they all differed, with a preference for a hard drink, followed by specials 1 and 2. For the global impression results, it was found that the hard drink presented a higher score and for purchase intention, all coffees showed a difference. , with the hard drink being “I would probably buy” and special 1 and 2, respectively, “I’m not sure if I would buy it” and “I probably wouldn’t buy it”. The scores for attributes, with the exception of body, were higher for hard coffee. Preferences and purchase intentions are possibly related to the custom of consuming traditional coffee, which has a darker color and more intense flavor.

Direitos Humanos e conservadorismo contemporâneo: a agenda dos deputados do Partido Social Liberal (PSL) 56ª Legislatura (2019-2023)
(Universidade Federal de São Carlos, 2024-09-06) Barros, Dalila Rodrigues; Diniz, Simone; https://lattes.cnpq.br/9726360676770459; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-6020-2937; https://lattes.cnpq.br/4996546026596982; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8544-4924
In recent years, political events have highlighted the importance of studies on growing conservatism and its ramifications in the institutional sphere. Contrary to the expectations of political scientists, the election of Jair Bolsonaro (PSL/RJ) was not limited to the executive power, but extended to the legislative scope, with a movement that formed around him during the campaign period. As a result, the impact of this politician was to boost the second largest group in the Chamber of Deputies with 53 parliamentarians. However, the strengthening of the conservative reaction is not limited to the 2018 elections, as it manifests itself in other events that marked the strengthening of conservative alliances. One of the effects of this strengthening is the reaction to the launch of the third edition of the National Human Rights Plan (PNDH-3) at the end of 2009, sanctioned by the Lula II government (2006-2010). In this sense, based on the hypothesis that a conservative agenda is underway in the Chamber of Deputies that promotes the regression of rights already achieved by marginalized groups in politics, such as women, black people, indigenous people, and Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) people, our research questions are: what is the conservative agenda of PSL deputies in relation to Human Rights during the 56th Legislature (2019-2023)? And what issues are raised for different vulnerable groups? The methodology adopted in this research was the case study as an investigative modality through statistical techniques with the Iramuteq software. The analysis focused on the selection of 480 bills that correspond to the 56th Legislature presented by the 53 PSL deputies taken from the Chamber of Deputies' own website. These bills were subsequently analyzed from the perspective of the 25 Guidelines of the PNDH-3. Based on the bills presented by the deputies and the analysis of vulnerable groups, such as children and adolescents, women, prisoners and the LGBT population, it is clear that there is a conservative advance that does not limit itself to the current legal and constitutional precepts. Above all, it is a movement that seeks to modify the legal system to meet specific interests and follow an ultra-conservative agenda, often to the detriment of fundamental human rights, making the protection of vulnerable groups more flexible. Another point to highlight from the analyses is the convergence of the public security agenda, which acts as an organizing axis, serving different purposes, depending on the vulnerable group in question.
