    A ida ao deserto de Horacio Quiroga

    Este trabajo de fin de máster tiene como objetivo analizar algunos cuentos de Horacio Quiroga por la óptica de la crítica sociológica. Dichos textos están ambientados en las regiones a las que el Estado liberal argentino del siglo diecinueve nombró Desierto. Aunque fuera considerado inculto y bárbaro por los autonombrados civilizadores, este espacio se muestra en la literatura del rioplatense como lugar de resistencia, lleno de cuerpos y conciencias que la Nación moderna quiso afuera del ideal de “civilización” planteado. Desde este borde, la escritura quiroguiana reverbera los conflictos del hombre ante la naturaleza, la historia y el propio hombre, convirtiéndolos en literatura. Para ello, tomaré como aporte teórico-metodológico el concepto de Heterogeneidad sociocultural, propuesto por Cornejo Polar (2003), a partir del análisis de los núcleos problemáticos que el autor establece como centrales para la comprensión de literaturas que se producen en contextos donde coexisten dos o más universos socioculturales. La ida de Horacio Quiroga al Desierto no trata simplemente de sus años como habitante en el norte argentino, sino de la consolidación de un discurso literario. El corpus de la investigación está compuesto por los cuentos “El mármol inútil” (1906), “La Insolación” (1908), “El simún” (1917), “El yaciyateré” (1917), “Los fabricantes de carbón” (1918) y “En la Noche” (1919). En dichos relatos, por medio de la confrontación entre los textos y las tensiones de ámbito sociohistóricas, buscaré demostrar cómo se constituyen el sujeto, el discurso y la representación. Además, los trabajos de Alves-Bezerra (2008) acerca de la obra de Quiroga, de Tulio Halperin Donghi (1992) sobre la constitución de la nación argentina hacia el Desierto y de Jens Andermann (2000) sobre el espacio aportan ricas contribuciones a la investigación, con las que concluí, por fin, que la literatura de Horacio Quiroga es heterogenia y es por este motivo que el autor cuestiona la historia y los discursos de la ocupación del Desierto argentino.

    This doctoral thesis was developed in the Graduate Program in Education (PPGE) at the Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCar) in the research area of Education, Culture, and Subjectivity, and is also the result of discussions and studies by the Research Group on Compassion Science and Education. We seek to analyze the following issues: How does the National Common Core Curriculum (BNCC) incorporate this issue? How do critics of the social-emotional education present in the BNCC present their arguments? And also, how can we think about social-emotional education that goes beyond the debate generated by the BNCC? Thus, our hypothesis is that the BNCC includes social-emotional education in a restricted and superficial manner, aligned with a technical and instrumental approach. The general objective is to analyze how social-emotional education has been presented within the scope of the BNCC, in order to also highlight how its critics have constructed their arguments against it. The methodology used to develop the research problem and objectives was theoretical and bibliographic research. First, we surveyed 19 articles available on the Capes Journal Portal, published between 2018 and 2022. We selected the year 2018 because it marked the approval and beginning of the implementation of the BNCC in schools. These studies address both the historical context of its construction and implementation and the appropriation of social-emotional learning in the Brazilian context. In addition, we conducted a second data search in the Web of Science database, between 2020 and 2024, with the aim of identifying more recent research. From this selection, we obtained 23 meta-analysis articles that investigate international social-emotional learning programs and strategies, highlighting effective results for both teaching and student learning. Thus, in our analysis, we were able to understand that social-emotional learning is seen in the 19 articles as the preparation and inclusion of students for the job market and that the business environment has a significant influence on both the BNCC and the introduction of social-emotional learning in Brazil. The 23 meta-analysis studies reviewed indicate that the concept of social-emotional learning adopted in several countries is broad, contextualized, and multidimensional, contrasting with the BNCC approach, which is more restrictive, technical, and prescriptive. Furthermore, there is a lack of clear guidelines in the Base regarding the teacher training necessary for a critical and contextualized practice of social-emotional learning. Thus, ideal social-emotional learning is focused on training conscious individuals who are capable of acting on reality and contributing to the construction of a more just, humane, and supportive society.

    A relação entre Física e Arte na Literatura Científica: uma investigação sobre como as pesquisas da área de ensino de física na literatura científica brasileira têm abordado essa relação

    This study investigates how the relationship between physics and art has been addressed in the Brazilian scientific literature in the field of physics education. It is a qualitative bibliographic analysis based on articles published between 2010 and 2024 in three Brazilian physics education journals classified as A by Qualis in the 2017–2020 quadrennium. In total, 22 articles were identified as the corpus of analysis. Inspired by Bardin’s Content Analysis methodology, the study developed two categorization criteria to examine the articles: the articulation criterion, which describes how physics is related to art through five analytical categories (cultural, motivational, interdisciplinary, integrative, and contextualizing); and the function criterion, which defines the role attributed to the relationship between physics and art in the articles, with four analytical categories (critical, formative, instrumental, and epistemological). The results reveal that the formative function was the most prevalent, highlighting the potential of the relationship between physics and art to broaden worldviews and foster a more sensitive and meaningful scientific education. Although the instrumental function remains common, its isolated use tends to limit the pedagogical potential of the relationship. Cultural and integrative articulations also stand out as the most versatile and formative.

    Autonomia universitária: entre garantias legais e ameaças políticas

    The 1988 Federal Constitution, in articles 206 and 207, guarantees public universities full academic, scientific, administrative and financial management autonomy. The autonomous university represents one of the pillars of the Democratic State of Law, given that it allows the production and dissemination of knowledge and the pluralism of ideas. In this context, important questions arise: have the actions of the Presidents of the Republic weakened university autonomy? Do the actions of the federal government, especially between 2019 and 2022, constitute political intervention in universities? Is university autonomy consolidated at its foundations? This study aims to investigate these questions based on three main axes: (i) the analysis of university autonomy as a constitutional principle and its scope; (ii) the understanding of the relationship between university autonomy and the development of democracy; and (iii) the evaluation of the performance of the federal Executive Branch in relation to public universities, with special attention to the appointment of rectors of federal higher education institutions. With a qualitative approach, the documentary research establishes a comparison between the appointments made by the President of the Republic between the periods of 2018 to 2022 and 2010 to 2014. It specifically analyzes whether the appointments were made based on the list of three candidates sent by the universities to the Ministry of Education, comparing the presidential acts with the manifestations of the university communities. The intention is to highlight possible tensions between the acts of the Executive and the constitutional principles that guarantee university autonomy in Brazil.

    Assimetrias inter-hemisféricas no hipocampo e sua associação com a progressão da doença de Alzheimer

    Brain atrophy is a progressive process typically associated with natural aging. In neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease (AD), this process is accelerated, manifesting in symptoms related to memory loss, reasoning difficulties, and behavioral changes. Currently, there is no cure for AD, and early treatment remains the most effective way to mitigate or delay symptoms. In addition to clinical tests and family history, structural Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) of the brain plays a fundamental role in diagnosis, as it enables visual assessment of brain atrophy—allowing comparison with age-related atrophy—and assists in ruling out other possible comorbidities from treatable dementias. Moreover, inter-hemispheric alterations are associated with AD and can be observed in MRI scans. Recent studies have investigated new methods for quantifying such asymmetries in order to develop biomarkers for supporting AD diagnosis and to train classifiers for automated diagnosis. However, despite promising results, visual inspection remains the most common approach for evaluating AD presence in MRI images. In this context, this work proposes a new methodology to quantify inter-hemispheric hippocampal asymmetries based on geometric and textural descriptors, focusing on predicting the progression from stable to progressive Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). The approach employs the shape context technique to extract log-spherical histograms from the accumulated energy map of the 3D Dual-Tree Complex Wavelet Transform (DT-CWT) in the hippocampal region. These descriptors, combined with volumetric features, are fed into a Convolutional Siamese neural network specifically designed to model inter-hemispheric differences. The proposed methodology achieved an F1-score of 0.845 ± 0.01 in distinguishing stable from progressive MCI cases. Additional binary classification experiments involving cognitively normal (CN), MCI, and AD subjects were also conducted, with consistent results: CN vs. AD (F1-score = 0.872 ± 0.05), CN vs. MCI (0.757 ± 0.03), and MCI vs. AD (0.731 ± 0.05). These findings demonstrate the influence of inter-hemispheric hippocampal alterations during AD progression and the effectiveness of these features for disease prediction and prognosis.

    Aplicação do arraste gasoso associado ao vácuo em fermentações extrativas utilizando matérias-primas sacarina e amilácea

    Despite being well-established industrially, ethanol fermentation is limited by the toxic effect of ethanol on yeast, resulting in wines with low alcohol content (10–15% v/v). Ethanol removal techniques can be applied to mitigate the inhibitory effect of the product and increase process productivity. In this context, the present work evaluated extractive ethanol fermentation using vacuum-assisted gas stripping. Initially, ethanol removal from hydroalcoholic solutions was investigated under different operational configurations of CO₂ specific flow rate, temperature, and pressure, with the aim of identifying the conditions that provided the highest ethanol removal from the liquid phase and the highest concentration in the gas phase. Subsequently, extractive fermentations with saccharine feedstock were assessed using both conventional and vacuum-assisted gas stripping, and the energy requirements of both processes were analyzed. Finally, extractive fermentations with starchy feedstock were conducted in separate hydrolysis and fermentation (SHF) and simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) processes. Mathematical models were developed to describe the processes, based on mass balance equations and incorporating the kinetics of hydrolysis, fermentation, and ethanol and water removal. The results of ethanol removal from hydroalcoholic solutions showed that all three operational variables significantly affected the process within the evaluated experimental range. The application of the technique increased the ethanol concentration in the gas phase by up to six times. In extractive fermentations with saccharine feedstock, both vacuum-assisted and conventional gas stripping increased ethanol productivity by up to 14.3%. The energy analysis indicated that the integrated technique reduced energy demand by 31.3% compared to conventional gas stripping. Finally, extractive fermentation of starchy feedstock increased ethanol productivity by 60% compared to conventional fermentation. The mathematical model adequately described the fermentation process. Vacuum-assisted gas stripping demonstrated potential as a promising technique, with the capacity to enhance ethanol productivity and lower the costs associated with the recovery and concentration of the removed ethanol.

    The machining of hard and brittle materials, such as ceramics and crystalline materials like quartz, is widely used in the construction of piezoelectric sensors and microelectromechanical systems (MEMS). The need to machine these materials efficiently and economically has become critical as the demand for affordable piezoelectric devices has increased, intensifying research in the area. Therefore, this work evaluated the performance of an experimental equipment, called C3L, with a tilting spindle for machining channels with an abrasive disk in polycrystalline alumina with 99.8% purity and monocrystalline α-quartz (AT plane) with the objective of verifying the ability of the C3L equipment to achieve results comparable to the commercial machine DISCO HI TECH DAD 3350. The C3L machine has a table with movement in Cartesian coordinates X, Y and Z and a bearing-mounted tilting spindle, capable of operating between horizontal and vertical positions. For this work, the project and construction of a flange for fixing the abrasive disk were developed. The equipment used as a reference for machining validation was a DISCO DAD3350 cutting machine, operating with an aerostatic spindle. The methodology for verifying failures consisted of dimensional analysis of chipping by optical microscopy, following a protocol already established in the literature that presents the average dimension of the chips caused by abrasive cutting as machining quality. The first material machined was a block of polycrystalline alumina (Al2O3), with 99.8% purity, measuring 34 × 34 × 8.5 mm. The part was ground to eliminate imperfections and the tests were carried out using an abrasive cutting disk model THERMOCARBON 2.25M-10C-54R7-3, which has an external diameter of 57.15 mm, thickness of 0.254 ± 0.010 mm, grain size of approximately 54 µm, and cooling was performed with water, applied manually. For alumina, with the same parameters applied in the commercial machine, the C3L showed average chipping of 15.69 µm against 20.50 µm of the DAD3350, representing an improvement of 23.5% in surface quality. However, angular misalignment was found between the spindle and the table, around Z, resulting in channel width 1.5 to 2.3 times the nominal thickness of the disk (254 µm). After aligning the table with a dial indicator, tests were carried out with quartz, which evaluated rotations (5,000; 10,000 and 15,000 rpm), feeds (0.1; 1 and 5 mm/s) and depths (0.1 and 0.3 mm); the smallest average flaw size (6.45 µm) occurred with a feed of 0.1 mm/s, depth of 0.3 mm and 10,000 rpm, while the largest average flaw size was identified in the cut with a feed of 5 mm/s, depth of 0.1 mm and 10,000 rpm, resulting in an average flaw size of 20.89 µm. Analysis of the tool after cutting revealed an asymmetric wear pattern on the disk, evidencing the misalignment, around Y, in the positioning of the spindle. It is concluded that, despite the need to correct the misalignment and implement automated cooling to optimize the process, the results demonstrate the technical feasibility of the C3L machine for machining α-quartz, with performance comparable to commercial equipment.
