This study aims to map, through images and narratives from contemporary cinema, the territories in which the presence of deaf women emerges. The forms through which these corporealities are constructed and tensioned between norms and inventions are traced, in the composition of scenes and in the affects that traverse them, thereby revealing the discourses and dispositifs that operate in these processes. The investigation adopts the cartographic approach of Deleuze and Guattari, articulating it with Deaf Studies, Feminist Studies, and the Philosophy of Difference. Based on eight films produced between 1986 and 2020, scenes were composed and analyzed as a research tool, mobilized by the researcher’s affects. The findings are structured around three analytical axes: (1) the pathologization of deafness and gender; (2) desire as a field of dispute in the production of deaf feminine corporeality; and (3) deaf female bodies in threshold spaces of genderbased violence. These axes demonstrate that deaf feminine corporeality is traversed by lines of control and invention, constituting a territory under dispute. Cinema makes evident how these corporealities are formed between norms and creative forces, operating simultaneously as a technology of gender and as a rhizomatic territory. In this way, cinema functions as an intensive field of the production of subjectivities, in which differences intertwine, generating assemblages and normative captures while also allowing other ways of being and existing in the world to emerge. Finally, it is emphasized that the cartography presented here is situated and unfinished, since, from a rhizomatic perspective, the production of knowledge unfolds in a fluid and continuous manner.

This research, developed for the completion of a master's degree, sought to investigate the influences of world higher-education ranking-institutions on Brazilian scholarly production, based on their historical process of institutionalization. The investigation started from social circumstances surrounding these instruments, in which there is a lack of emphasis on the political, economic and institutional structures that sustain them. Through celebrations and various forms of consumption evident in the most widely used communication channels, these metrics increasingly circulate in specialized media, on university institutional portals and on academic social networks, thereby expanding their presence in the public debate. In this sense, we sought to analyze the structure of the historical processes that formed the foundational institutions for this type of classification, with emphasis on the properties of the ranking institution QS World University Rankings. Based on a framework concerning the political-social formation of public and private institutions and how these acquired predominance through the ideologies that underpin the State, we sought to analyze how the criteria used to evaluate these ranking institutions are interrelated with a historical-materialist understanding of institutions in the State, according to the narrower interests of specific groups that exert globalized influence. We emphasize that each element has political, social and, above all, economic foundations, which shape how publications occur and periodically influence the publications under evaluation. At the same time, the institutional agents affected by this ranking institution seek means to adapt their work according to the methodological determinations. As a result, an ambivalent relationship is observed in which science is valued more restrictively while at the same time providing ever more data to reinforce the criteria. Consequently, there is an uncritical consumption of these institutions due to insufficiently informed understanding of the criteria and purposes that sustain their existence.

This doctoral thesis focuses on teacher education in the undergraduate Letras-Libras (Brazilian Sign Language) teacher training programs offered by federal universities in the Brazilian Amazon. It is based on the recognition that teacher education aimed at the educational inclusion of deaf students in this regional context requires consideration of the linguistic, cultural, social, geographic, and socio-environmental particularities that characterize the multiple Amazons. The central objective of this research is to analyze the advances, challenges, and possibilities for improving the training offered in Letras-Libras undergraduate teacher education programs at federal universities in the Brazilian Amazon, considering the diverse linguistic, cultural, and socio-environmental dimensions of the region that shape and permeate the lives of deaf individuals and that are either present or silenced within these educational processes. The research adopts a qualitative approach and was developed through two complementary studies. Study I consisted of a systematic literature review aimed at mapping and characterizing the scientific production concerning initial teacher education in undergraduate teaching programs in the Amazon region, outlining the institutional, pedagogical, political, and socio-environmental context in which the Letras-Libras programs are situated. Study II was based on focus groups conducted with coordinators, professors, and students from Letras-Libras undergraduate teacher education programs, seeking to understand, from their perspectives, the elements that configure the advances, limitations, and possibilities for improving this training. Data analysis was carried out in light of the theoretical framework of Bakhtin and the Bakhtin Circle, mobilizing analytical categories such as dialogism, utterance, verbal interaction, meaning and theme, ideological sign, alterity, discourse, ideology, exotopy, and responsive act. These concepts enabled the identification of the meanings circulating in the participants’ utterances, highlighting the polyphonic and conflictive nature of discourses surrounding teacher education and revealing the need for a dialogical curricular construction that is responsive to the linguistic and socio-environmental realities of the Amazon. In summary, the results indicate that despite structural limitations, weaknesses in public policies, and processes of curricular homogenization, there are emerging movements of resistance, institutional initiatives, and formative experiences that point to the possibility of a more dialogical, territorially grounded, and socially responsive teacher education, sensitive to the multiple deaf identities present in the region.

Aligned with the field of Digital Technologies (DTs) in the school context, this study aims to analyze aspects of the implementation of digital technological resources in municipal public elementary schools (Grades 1–5 in the Brazilian education system) in Leme, São Paulo, Brazil. Adopting a qualitative approach and drawing on content analysis (Bardin, 1977), the study is based on data collected through an online questionnaire and semi-structured interviews, with the participation of 38 educators. This research is based on contributions from scholars in teacher training and digital technologies, considering not only the characteristics and possibilities of digital technologies in the educational field, but also their non-neutral nature. The findings indicate that, although the municipality provides equipment and resources and considers robotics classes as a possible means of incorporating DTs into educational practices, approaches that promote their integrated use across the curriculum and that could foster substantial transformations in the teaching and learning process are scarcely emphasized or virtually absent in schools and across the municipal school system. It is argued that such uses need to be further supported, encouraged, and developed considering their pedagogical potential, as most of the practices identified in the municipality tend to emphasize playful uses or the “digitalization” of content, rather than approaches that promote knowledge construction and expansion. Thus, this study proposes TPACK (Koehler & Mishra, 2006) as a relevant model to be considered in teacher education. In this regard, it is essential for the municipality to rethink public policies aimed at the implementation of DTs in education, considering their political, social, structural, epistemological, and educational dimensions. This would enable, across the school system, greater recognition and valuing of professionals, relationships, and practices within the educational context, thereby fostering a truly transformative education.

Brazilian cultural producers, professionals who are part of the so-called cultural production chain, are identified as those responsible for ensuring the public's reception of a cultural work or product. This research analyzes the construction of the professional discourse of Brazilian cultural producers, as well as the aspects and characteristics that compose and constitute this professional group and the professional identification they claim. The analysis begins with the ongoing disputes within the professional group, which revolve around its naming, professionalization, and professional identification. In relation to these disputes, we seek to associate them with an empirical perspective that aims to value the particular and collective experiences of these professionals, arguing that the group of producers constructs and reconstructs its professional discourse from elements that sometimes seek to claim a formality and professionalization of the activity, and sometimes deny them, praising less traditional work practices. This research also investigates how notions of prestige develop within the professional group, how they are shaped by the processes of gender and racialization within the group, and how the boundaries of each area's activity are established. There is also an interest in understanding how the recognition of cultural production activity is delineated, both by members of the group and by other agents integrated into the work networks mobilized by cultural producers. To this end, semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with twenty cultural producers from all regions of Brazil, in addition to participant observation. The results obtained in the research lead us to conclude that although professional discourse continues to be constructed as professionals articulate their professional practices. Narratives frequently address the urgency of specific technical professionalization within the group, and cultural producers construct their professional identification based on visions that denote satisfaction and pride in their careers. Similarly, they report negative aspects that must be overcome for the consolidation of the professional group, especially regarding a more equitable distribution in terms of race and gender in the occupation of management and leadership positions, and the need for social recognition of the activity.

Pepper plants, belonging to the genus Capsicum, are one of the primary spice species in the world, utilized both fresh and processed. The market and producers have become more demanding regarding fruit quality and productivity, making innovations in the sector increasingly necessary. New pepper hybrids can contribute to this trend. The present study aimed to characterize 11 pepper hybrids (C. chinense) and two controls: ‘F1 Maria Bonita’ (C. chinense) and the commercial variety ‘Dedo-de-Moça’ (C. baccatum), for agronomic evaluations such as: height of the first bifurcation, days to flowering, total number of fruits per plant, number of commercial fruits per plant, number of defective fruits, total fruit mass per plant, average fruit mass, total yield, dry matter percentage, fruit length, fruit diameter, fruit pulp thickness, and number of locules; physico-chemical evaluations such as: color, fruit firmness, soluble solids, titratable acidity, soluble solids/titratable acidity ratio, total phenolic compounds, and total carotenoids; and sensory evaluations such as: color, brightness, visual texture, spicy aroma, fruity aroma, spicy flavor, fruity flavor, juiciness, crunchiness, and acceptance, under protected cultivation. Quantitative data were subjected to statistical analysis using the Scott & Knott test at 5%. Regarding the characteristics of total number of fruits, number of commercial fruits, total fruit mass, and yield, there was no statistical difference among the studied materials. Differences were observed among the materials regarding fruit shape; concerning fruit length, hybrids 1 and 2 were the closest to the ‘Dedo-de-Moça’ control, indicating a possibility for changing fruit typology, which could be utilized in future genetic breeding to achieve elongated fruit shapes in the C. chinense species. Physico-chemical analyses revealed that, among the produced hybrids, hybrid 2 stood out for fruit firmness and soluble solids, while hybrids 5 and 10 achieved the highest means for pH, soluble solids/titratable acidity ratio, and carotenoid content. Regarding the total phenolic compounds variable, all hybrids presented means equal to the ‘F1 Maria Bonita’ control and lower than the ‘Dedo-de-Moça’ control. The sensory analysis demonstrated that all materials had equal acceptance levels, showing high potential interest among consumers. Based on the results obtained, these hybrids possess high potential for innovation in the pepper agribusiness.

This dissertation investigated Freud's conception of sadism and masochism between 1905 and 1919, first questioning whether such formations constitute particular pathological expressions or structural dimensions of human sexuality. The research examined the conceptual genealogy of the sadism-masochism pair, from its formulation in Richard von Krafft-Ebing's "Psychopathia Sexualis" (1886) to its reformulation by Freud in "Three Essays on the Theory of Sexuality" (1905). It demonstrated how Freud shifted sadism and masochism from the psychiatric field to conceive them as structural components of instinctual life. Perversion ceased to be understood solely as a pathological deviation and came to designate constitutive modalities of infantile sexuality and psychic organization. Sadism and masochism thus emerge as privileged expressions of the articulation between aggression, pleasure, pain, activity, and passivity, anticipating economic issues later developed in "Beyond the Pleasure Principle" (1920). The dissertation also analyzed Freud's additions to the "Three Essays" (1905) and the essays "Instincts and Their Vicissitudes" (1915) and "A Child Is Being Beaten" (1919). It was observed that, by incorporating concepts such as ambivalence, sadistic-anal organization, guilt, and the Oedipus complex, Freud broadens the metapsychological status of these formations. Masochism, therefore, ceases to be conceived merely as a derivation of sadism and comes to occupy a structural position in the constitution of subjectivity and moral consciousness. It can be concluded that sadism and masochism have become fundamental conceptual operators in Freudian drive theory, demonstrating that perversion is not external to normality, but a constitutive component of human experience.

This doctoral thesis investigates how the contemporary Brazilian far right, between 2019 and 2022, produced and consolidated an intersubjectively shared universe of meaning that conferred social plausibility upon the dismantling of environmental policy and the erosion of Indigenous rights. Although such processes are not unprecedented in the country’s history, the analysis focuses on the ways in which they were rearticulated and intensified during the Bolsonaro administration. Grounded in Alfred Schutz’s social phenomenology, the study starts from the assumption that social reality is constituted within the life-world through typifications, systems of relevance, and reciprocal expectations that orient action and delimit the horizons of the possible and the legitimate. The central hypothesis argues that the environmental and Indigenous policies implemented during the period under analysis cannot be reduced to circumstantial administrative or legislative choices; rather, they participated in the consolidation of a finite province of meaning within which environmental depletion and the suppression of Indigenous rights gradually came to be naturalized and collectively legitimized as socially acceptable practices. This interpretation is empirically supported by a qualitative examination of normative acts, administrative reforms, official speeches, and documents produced by socio-environmental and Indigenous organizations. By articulating these elements, the study seeks to understand narratives that deny the environmental crisis and Indigenous rights as a specific mode of ordering social experience, materialized in invisible cartographies that silence, hierarchize, and delimit territories of belonging and exclusion. In this sense, the title of the thesis refers to the constitution of territories of denialism, understood as social spaces of taken-for-grantedness in which criteria of plausibility and patterns of legitimation are stabilized, orienting practices, discourses, and public policies within the contemporary Brazilian far right.

Powder pressing followed by sintering is widely used in industry. In low-confinement stages, such as die ejection, handling, and green machining, the mechanical behavior of the green compact can be described by an elastoplastic constitutive model based on the Drucker-Prager (DP) yield criterion, incorporating isotropic hardening. This study investigated the identifiability of the linear DP model parameters with Voce hardening law, which include the elastic modulus (E), internal friction angle (β), yield stress (σy), saturation stress (σ∞), and hardening parameter (b), using cyclic Brazilian test data on alumina green compacts, adopting an associative plastic flow hypothesis (ψ = β). The Finite Element Model Updating (FEMU) technique was employed in two stages: a numerical sensitivity analysis based on synthetic data and a force-based experimental application (FEMU-F) using experimental data of three Brazilian tests available in the literature. The numerical analysis demonstrated that global force data enables the identification of E and β with high sensitivity but are unable to uniquely constrain the hardening parameters due to a critical coupling between σy, σ∞, and b, creating a valley of indistinguishable solutions. The incorporation of displacement fields in the combined approach (FEMU-UF) proved capable of mitigating this ill-conditioning, numerically validating the cyclic Brazilian test as a viable setup for elastoplastic characterization. In the experimental application, E and β were identified with a variability of less than 4%, while σy exhibited a variability of 38%, experimentally confirming the coupling predicted by the Hessian eigenvalue decomposition. Despite this parametric instability, a generalized model using average parameters reproduced the force-time curves with less than a 7% deviation compared to the individual fits. In conclusion, the model reproduces faithfully the mechanical response of the Brazilian test. Nevertheless, its global predictive capacity remains limited to the specific test conditions and the adopted hypothesis of associative flow.

The research addresses the challenges and prospects of regulating Artificial Intelligence (AI) in a constantly changing society. Situated within the field of Science, Technology and Society (STS), it begins with a reflection on data protection and informational self-determination, advancing to explore the ethical and social implications of AI in light of the absence of a specific regulatory framework in Brazil. The study seeks to understand how bills currently under discussion, such as Bill No. 2338/2023, may shape the future regulation of AI, promoting a risk-based approach that considers social vulnerabilities and fundamental rights. The choice of the term mutation in the title reflects the unpredictability and complex impacts of AI, which, like a genetic mutation, can bring both progress and challenges. The research examines how AI is already integrated into social, political, and economic spheres, not only through process automation, but also through systems capable of learning, predicting, and making decisions. This integration brings benefits such as efficiency and innovation, yet also poses structural risks, including the depersonalization of labor relations and the weakening of social protections. Through a qualitative and comparative analysis, the study examines the proposals for AI regulation, such as Bills No. 21/2020 and 2338/2023, comparing them with international models, particularly the European Union’s Artificial Intelligence Act. The conclusion highlights the urgency of developing an adaptive and responsive regulatory framework, capable of keeping pace with technological advances while preserving human centrality in automated decision-making. Thus, this research contributes to the STS field by proposing ethical and regulatory guidelines that aim to balance innovation, social responsibility, and the protection of fundamental rights.

Hospitals are complex organizations in which processes and sectors are interconnected. The Surgical Center (SC) is one of the most relevant hospital sectors, as it concentrates high care demand, intensive use of resources, and directly impacts patient flow. In this context, measuring operational times is essential for monitoring the efficiency of the sector, including admission time, anesthesia time, surgical procedure time, post-anesthetic recovery time, and total patient stay in the Surgical Center. Prolonged surgical flow times may lead to delays in subsequent procedures, increased operational costs, staff overload, and negative impacts on patient experience. This study aimed to propose the implementation of Lean Healthcare tools to reduce patient length of stay in the Surgical Center, based on the analysis of the care flow and the identification of the main causes related to prolonged process times. This is a qualitative study developed through a single and in-depth case study at the Surgical Center of Hospital Universitário Júlio Muller, in Cuiabá, Mato Grosso, Brazil. An exploratory literature review was also conducted to identify waste related to surgical processes. Data collection was performed through the analysis of records related to admission, anesthesia, surgery start and end, post-anesthetic recovery, and discharge times, in addition to direct observation of the surgical flow and interviews with professionals involved in the surgical process, including surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, nursing technicians, and residents. A total of 85 elective surgical procedures were analyzed. Data were organized in digital spreadsheets and submitted to descriptive statistical analysis using means and standard deviations for each stage of the process. The results showed an average patient stay in the Surgical Center of 6h18min (±2h06min). The average admission time was 39 minutes (±18 min), anesthesia time 3h09min (±1h39min), surgical time 2h01min (±1h31min), and post-anesthetic recovery time 1h44min (±51 min). The main sources of waste identified included communication failures among teams, delays in room preparation, unavailability of materials, and lack of process standardization. As improvement proposals, Lean Healthcare tools were applied, including Value Stream Mapping (VSM), Ishikawa Diagram, 5W2H method, Kaizen, and multidisciplinary “bate-mapa” meetings. The Future State VSM demonstrated the potential reduction of total Lead Time from 5h44min to 5h10min, mainly associated with the reduction of non-value-added activities and improvement in communication between sectors. It was concluded that the application of Lean Healthcare tools proved promising for identifying waste, optimizing surgical processes, and improving operational efficiency in the Surgical Center, contributing to greater predictability of care flow, reduction of delays, and strengthening of patient care quality and safety.

This thesis investigates how the concept of sustainability is constructed within scientific journalism and to what extent this construction aligns with the scientific concept discussed within the academic community. The study focuses on journalistic reports produced by three journalists from Revista Pesquisa Fapesp, analysed through Discursive Textual Analysis, as well as interviews conducted with these authors. The results indicate that, in the scientific journalism analysed, sustainability is predominantly associated with technology, understood as a means of increasing efficiency in the use of natural resources and as a central solution to environmental problems. This construction is strongly linked to the economic sphere, as the financial viability of technologies emerges as a relevant criterion for their legitimation as sustainable. Such a conception shows convergence with the scientific understanding disseminated by international organisations, particularly with regard to the less burdensome use of resources, while also revealing the circulation of a hegemonic view of the concept, reproduced by scientists frequently mobilised as sources. A largely unproblematised trust in science was also observed, marked by the absence of methodological discussion and by the transformation of estimates into expectations, which limits the potential for critical reflection among non-specialists. The interviews indicate that, although the journalists share elements of the scientific concept of sustainability, they also express criticism of its reduction to economic logic and the marginalisation of the social dimension. Finally, a shift was identified from a future oriented understanding of sustainability to one focused on present demands, aligned with the prevailing economic model. It is concluded that scientific journalism tends to present sustainability as a predominantly environmental and technological issue, pointing to the need to broaden the debate through practices that incorporate other actors and perspectives in the construction of this concept.

This thesis analyzes working conditions in Brazilian Public Rural Extension through the lens of digital mediations, selecting the category of work in its Marxist basis as the central analytical axis. The general objective consists of investigating how the incorporation of Digital Information and Communication Technologies (DICTs) reconfigures the material, organizational, and ontological dimensions of extension practice. The research starts from the hypothesis that the digitalization of Technical Assistance and Rural Extension (Ater) is driven by an institutional technological fetishism that, by presenting tools as neutral and self-sufficient solutions, can mask processes of precarization and labor intensification. The theoretical framework sought to establish a dialogue between the critique of political economy (alienation and precarization) and the field of Science, Technology, and Society (STS), mobilizing concepts such as surveillance capitalism and social technology. Methodologically, a mixed-methods approach was adopted based on a national quantitative survey conducted via a Google Forms questionnaire, with 475 valid responses from extension workers across 23 institutions, alongside a qualitative content analysis (Bardin) of the open-ended reports. The results indicate a scenario of contradiction, in which digitalization expands the territorial reach of actions, streamlines communication, and enables new forms of technical monitoring and guidance, but also intensifies work, extends working hours beyond formal schedules, reinforces control mechanisms through targets and system records, and contributes to processes of overload and loss of autonomy. In this context, digital technologies fulfill a dual role: they enhance communication and service provision while also dissolving the boundaries between work time and personal life, imposing permanent connectivity and subordinating practice to monitoring and registration systems. This process is interpreted as a contemporary expression of precarization and alienation in extension work. The analysis identifies, however, the emergence of the "Ethics of Commitment" as active resistance, in which extension workers appropriate DICTs as Social Technology for the guarantee of rights and rural citizenship. As a propositional contribution, the thesis advocates for the regulation of the right to disconnect, the material valorization of professionals, and the subordination of technique to social and territorial objectives. It is concluded that strengthening public Rural Extension requires overcoming the technological and managerialist fetish, reaffirming the extension worker as an agent of transformation and an active presence in the territories.

This dissertation investigates how the curricula of pre-service Biology teacher education programs (Licenciatura) at the Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCar), Brazil, articulate the curricular status of phylogenetic systematics and tree thinking in initial teacher education. The empirical materials consist of the Course Curricular Projects (Projetos Pedagógicos de Curso, PPCs), treated as curriculum documents that frame and organize curricular knowledge. This qualitative documentary study compares seven PPC versions from the Araras, São Carlos, and Sorocaba campuses, including Araras (2007), São Carlos (2015, 2025), Sorocaba full-time (2010, 2023), and Sorocaba evening (2008, 2022). The corpus was analyzed through Discursive Textual Analysis (DTA), articulating unitarization, categorization, and the production of an interpretive metatext, with the reading guided by four analytical categories: formative rationalities in teacher education, mechanisms of theory–practice integration, the curricular status of phylogeny, and epistemological and pedagogical coherence. The findings indicate that phylogeny appears with variable intensity as a recognized scientific language and content within the core disciplinary subjects, especially in syllabi and bibliographies, and that recent reforms, particularly in Sorocaba, institutionalize foundational systematics as mandatory components of the curriculum. At the same time, curricular prescription does not transform phylogenetic systematics, treated primarily as content, into phylogenetic literacy or into tree-thinking operations, since tree thinking remains absent from the intended graduate profile and expected competencies and is not articulated in longitudinal teaching-practice components or in the teaching practicum. In PPCs that explicitly state evolution as an integrating axis, there is likewise no indication of tree thinking as an organizing principle for biological content and biological reasoning. This dissertation argues that phylogeny as content and phylogenetic literacy as a teaching competence correspond to distinct regimes of curricular prescription. The former is sustained by disciplinary presence and distribution, whereas the latter depends on decisions regarding compulsory status, timing and sequencing, and curricular textual specification that make possible the acquisition of tree-thinking operations throughout the program. Finally, the study proposes directions for curricular redesign aimed at institutionalizing these operations as organizing principles for Biology teaching.

In survival analysis, it is common to incorporate covariates such as age, sex, disease severity, among others. However, there are several unobserved factors that may also influence survival, including overall health status, lifestyle, occupation, or genetic predisposition. Such factors are often referred to as frailty and represent unobserved heterogeneity among individuals in the study. The objective of this work is to develop frailty models capable of capturing this unobserved heterogeneity in survival data. We introduce a new class of survival models that combines population unobserved heterogeneity and the presence of cured individuals through the incorporation of frailty terms from the PVF family (Power Variance Functions), referred to as PVF-Induced Defective (PVF-ID) models. This framework extends the classical theory of frailty models and defective lifetime models, allowing researchers to flexibly model the presence of long-term survivors. Inference is performed through a fully Bayesian procedure implemented via Hamiltonian Monte Carlo, while relevant frequentist properties are assessed through simulation studies. When applied to survival data related to HIV/AIDS, the model consistently identifies the effects of the covariates. Additionally, a bivariate survival model with cure fraction and frailty is proposed, based on Poisson mixtures and the PVF family. The model is extended to a regression framework, allowing the assessment of covariate effects on survival times. Inference is conducted under a Bayesian approach using Hamiltonian Monte Carlo implemented in RStan, and simulation studies are carried out to evaluate the performance of the estimators. The flexibility of the proposed structure allows the model to capture both dependence between failure times and unobserved heterogeneity. The practical utility of the model is illustrated using a real dataset.

Surface engineering has become an essential field for understanding how topographical characteristics influence the functional performance of materials in different applications, such as heat exchangers. Therefore, investigating the relationship between manufacturing parameters, machining vibrations, and variations in surface roughness parameters has attracted increasing scientific and technological interest. In this context, vibrations induced by actuators or inherent to machining processes can significantly alter surface morphology, resulting in surfaces with distinct characteristics depending on the process conditions. Thus, the present work aims to characterize flat machined surfaces of aluminum, brass, and stainless steel produced through turning and milling processes under different machining conditions, with emphasis on the analysis of roughness and wettability parameters. The characterization of the surface topology of the samples was carried out using confocal microscopy, evaluating the parameters of average roughness (Ra), skewness (Rsk), and kurtosis (Rku). Wettability analyses were performed using an optical tensiometer, enabling measurements of static, advancing, and receding contact angles, with distilled water used as the working fluid. The results obtained from turning indicated that, for all analyzed materials, samples produced under more severe machining parameters exhibited higher contact angles compared to surfaces manufactured under milder conditions. In contrast, the opposite behavior was observed for aluminum samples produced by milling, where higher contact angle values were associated with the higher speed condition corresponding to unstable machining. Overall, a consistent association was observed between the behavior of the skewness parameter and static contact angles, since in several cases where skewness varied, variations in static contact angle were also observed. These results contribute to the understanding of the influence of vibrations on the topographical characteristics of machined surfaces, supporting the correlation between manufacturing conditions, surface roughness, and wettability.

This paper analyzes the transformations in the conceptions of control of the main companies in the Brazilian meatpacking companies: JBS, Marfrig, and Minerva, addressing how their strategies and management models were reconfigured in the context of the sector's consolidation and the financialization of the economy. The theoretical framework is based on Fligstein's economic sociology, especially the notion of conceptions of control. It engages with the literature on financialization and the Varieties of Capitalism approach, situating the Brazilian case within its specific institutional arrangement. It starts from the premise that conceptions of control express internal power dynamics within companies and their position in a field marked by disputes, state mediation, and market pressures. Methodologically, a multiple case study approach was adopted, analyzing the trajectory of the companies based on documentary analysis of corporate reports and corporate documents from 2007 to 2024. The investigation focused on dimensions such as acquisitions and mergers, shareholding composition, capital structure and leverage, profiles of the board of directors and management boards, and dividend distribution, allowing for a processual understanding of organizational transformations. The results indicate that the expansion of the companies, which became dominant in the national market and protagonists in the global protein trade, was driven by growth strategies via mergers and acquisitions, financed by leveraged capital structures and access to the stock market. The initial public offering (IPO) represented a turning point, redefining performance criteria and expanding the influence of institutional investors. A progressive professionalization of management and a reconfiguration of the role of the founding families were observed, in an environment increasingly driven by financial metrics. In terms of control concepts, the consolidation of shareholder value orientation was identified as the dominant principle throughout the analyzed period. The dynamics of the sector thus reveal a field of strategic action in which the State, companies, and investors interact, highlighting a hybrid form of financialization in Brazilian capitalism. It is concluded that the transformations in the conceptions of control of these corporations express broader changes in the organization of agro-export capitalism in Brazil, contributing to a critical understanding of financialization in emerging economies and its effects on governance and business action.

In this research, conducted in the area of the Heliópolis favela and the São João Clímaco neighborhood (southern zone of São Paulo), an ethnographic study was carried out on the effects of the national policy of recent decades aimed at combating precarious settlements – understood from the development of the Favela Urbanization Program – specifically its housing and social interventions. To achieve this objective, the thesis is structured into five chapters that articulate theoretical, documentary, and ethnographic analysis. The first chapter ethnographically reconstructs the formation of the field of urban studies, demonstrating how the central lens defining favelas as spaces of precarious housing was consolidated, focusing on the theoretical/discursive bases that would later be assimilated by the national public housing policy studied. The second chapter specifically examines the transition of this alignment between the theory of urbanization (of large cities) and housing policies, analyzing the theoretical-political fold through which the critical diagnosis of the unequal city – forged in the struggles against the military dictatorship – was converted into housing management technology, focusing on the description of how this academic knowledge underpinned the national policy to combat precarious settlements in urban Brazil (materialized in the Favela Urbanization Program). The third chapter introduces the ethnographic perspective of the research field, describing the historical action of residents who formed the local social movement in the Heliópolis region and their influence on the territorialization of the Favela Urbanization Program's intervention, explaining how local housing struggles were both recognized and resignified by the Program. The fourth chapter complicates this understanding by presenting other voices, knowledges, and housing arrangements that escaped the standardizing planning of the Favela Urbanization Program, pointing to the diversity and complexity of the ways of living in the favela that were obscured by the housing intervention studied. Finally, the fifth chapter focuses on the concrete experience of removal and waiting resulting from the intervention, detailing ethnographically how the lives of residents of the studied area were transformed by forced displacement, dependence on housing assistance programs, and prolonged uncertainty regarding the housing promised with the development of the Favela Urbanization Program; which, according to statements gathered in the research, produced a new form of vulnerability. The research, based on intensive fieldwork and bibliographic and documentary research, made it possible to confront the official project of the city with the understandings of struggle held by the population objectified by that project. The thesis concludes that urban interventions such as the Favela Urbanization Program, by ignoring the complexity, history, and disputes inherent in the ways of living in favelas, not only fail to solve housing problems but often intensify them, demanding from favela residents constant reinventions of their struggles for the right to housing and to live in the city.

Analyzing institutional politics in Brazil requires an examination of its past as a means to understand the present and envision possibilities for "other futures." It is fundamental, therefore, to recover the profiles of representatives who have occupied decision-making spaces and to identify the interests and objectives that permeated the sphere of institutional political representation. Consequently, understanding the profiles of city councillors (vereadores) in Sorocaba/SP, within a timeframe beginning in 1948, constitutes the central object of this thesis, which seeks clues to understand institutional political dynamics. The focus on Sorocaba’s local legislature is configured not merely as a research possibility, but as a recovery of the author's own political trajectory within the city. This lived experience becomes an investigative tool intertwined with scientific research, structured under rigorous sociodemographic analysis, fieldwork, and theoretical foundation. Thus, examining the locality from this perspective serves as a strategy to identify potential generalizations that assist in understanding electoral dynamics at state, national, and global levels. The recovery of these dynamics at the territorial level allows for an understanding of the vestiges of the roots that forge the relations between representatives and the represented. The identification of phenomena such as coronelismo (colonelism), mandonismo (bossism), and clientelism - and their developments through the lenses of the "legislator," the "procurer," and the "welfare provider" - comprises the framework chosen by the author to categorize, based on semi-structured interviews, the councillors elected for the first time in the 2024 elections. Furthermore, this study seeks to demonstrate how this modus operandi perpetuates itself, alongside the hypothesis of an emerging new group, termed by the author as the "personalist" group. This profile does not necessarily maintain a bond with the territory, a party project, or a political party; rather, it fosters a direct identification with the voter through themes that transcend local jurisdiction and the traditional role of the councillor, mediated primarily by social networks. Finally, the study reflects upon the profiles of councillors in Sorocaba/SP, emphasizing variables such as gender, race, religion, and marital status, in search of investigative evidence on how these new profiles may reorganize the dynamics of institutional politics.
