Reflexões sobre o discurso médico: o conceito de dor crônica, suas implicações e o "mediquês"

This work is a dissertation (Master in Linguistics degree) that deals with certain aspects of medical discourse regarding chronic pain, addressing topics that range from Popular Linguistics (Gonçalves, 2021; Baronas, 2021; 2022), whether in the conceptualization of Pain within the field of Health Sciences or in the use of what is referred to here as “doctor-speak” (“mediquês”). We explore some meanings of the word “pain” from the therapists’ point of view, using Eduardo Guimarães’s Event Semantics theory (2002). We examine aspects of medical ethos, particularly concerning placebo and nocebo effects, as proposed by Dominique Maingueneau (2020; 2022). This analysis of ethos also extends to the realm of medical discourse in digital environments. We discuss the ambiguity of the diminutive—so present in discursive practices in the health field—in relation to supposed humanization and the maintenance of power asymmetry between speakers from a Foucauldian perspective (Foucault, 2008; 2019; 2021). We conclude that Linguistics, as a science, can contribute to improving communication between parties within the therapeutic alliance, despite the evident discursive fractures derived from diverse methodologies and epistemes.
