Elderly Brazilians with cognitive impairments normally get cares of their family members. Nowadays, family has been suffering changes on its structure and on its functioning that can compromise this cares, especially in poverty contexts. This worksheet had the main goal of analyze the family functioning of the elderly Brazilians with cognitive impairments that are from the Family health units from the city of São Carlos - SP and that lives in impoverished neighborhoods. Based on the presupposed quantity inquiry methods, were realized individual interviews and at home with elderly and their family members. All ethical guidelines for research were followed. They have been put on the "Critério Brasil" , the Genogram , the Mini Mental State Exam, the Family APGAR, Katz Index and Pfeffer Functional activities questionnaire. Statistics methods were used for the data analysis. The results indicate that elderly that lives in poverty context are mainly, female (77%), from 71 and 75 years old (33%), married (60%), without education (51%), are independent (96%) for basic daily life activities and dependent (58%) for instrumental daily life activities. If we take a look at the poor elderly family functioning, we can see that 62% of the women and 95% of the men rated their family functioning as good , 21% of the women and 5% of the men reported moderate family dysfunction and only women (17%) reported high levels of dysfunction. There was influence of gender and there wasn´t from age at the Family APGAR results. These data may help in implantation of the cares line for elderly with cognitive impairments at the city on the field Family Health Strategie, especially by the fact that the elderly brazilians care is most of the times made by famales family members.
