Abstract

The term social is polysemic, it can be understood as referring to society or to the group of citizens of a country; in the context of capitalist industrialization, it refers to the less favored masses. Occupational therapy training programs in Latin America were founded in the 1950s, replicating Anglo-Saxon models; years later, their inadequacy to respond to social demands began to be complained about. This study analyzes the ways in which the social is understood in occupational therapy training programs in fifteen Latin American countries. It is based on coloniality, a pattern of power and domination of knowledge that silences peoples and cultures, reproduces European culture, capitalism and relations of subordination. Likewise, he takes as references the contributions of Malfitano, who analyzes the transversal or specific place of the social in occupational therapy, and Galheigo, who refers to three perspectives in the approach to the social in the profession: structural-functionalist, humanistic and critical. The research is developed in three phases: the first, an approach to the current situation of undergraduate programs in occupational therapy in the participating countries; the second, a documentary analysis aimed at identifying purposes and emphasis of the training; the third part of 19 interviews with teachers and directors, to analyze trends in the understanding of the social. These tendencies, in dialogue with the contents of the subjects and the conceptual reference, reveal two orientations. 142 active occupational therapy programs were identified in the fifteen countries in 2023, 82% concentrated in Brazil, Chile, Argentina, and Colombia. They are mostly offered in private institutions, whose purposes usually focus on educational quality, the training of competent professionals for the technical-clinical labor market and the management of health services. Subjects related to the emphasis on pathologies and biology have greater weight in the curricula, followed by those related to social emphasis and on processes and frameworks based on occupation and activity. Eight trends in the understanding of the social were identified: what is not biological and non-technical; what is not individual; it is to bring interventions to the territory; what is outside the curriculum; it is to look at the subject in his context; what about the community practice is social; the centrality in the occupation; it is transversal in the curriculum. Finally, these trends show two orientations in the understanding of the social, called: "the social in occupational therapy" and "critical occupational therapies". In the first, the social is a transversal element that is integrated into the subjects of the different emphases with references such as human rights. This orientation is identified with the structural-functionalist and humanistic perspectives, privileges individual interventions in social contexts and a role of the therapist as an adaptor. In the second, the social comes to be differentiated as a sub-area of knowledge and action based on critical and societal approaches, aimed at populations without social support with collective actions in contexts where the therapist assumes a transformative role.
