Abstract
This research investigates the construction and evolution of the figure of the onryō in Japanese horror cinema, focusing on the character Oiwa through a comparative analysis of three film adaptations of the play Tōkaidō Yotsuya Kaidan, released in 1949, 1959, and 2014. A comparative approach is employed in order to examine continuities and transformations in the representation of this traditional figure over time, taking into account different historical and aesthetic contexts. Initially, the study presents an overview of the arrival of cinema in Japan and its early manifestations within the horror genre, subsequently turning to the cultural origins of the onryō and its transposition into the horror genre. Situated within the field of Film Studies, this research proposes a dialogue between the mythic-cultural roots of the onryō — from the foundational myths to its consolidation during the Edo period — and its cinematic representation from the twentieth to the twenty-first century, analyzing how cultural traditions and contemporary influences intertwine in the construction of different forms of representing horror over time.
