Objective: To develop an instrument for assessing surgical patient experience and obtain initial evidence of content validity. Method: A methodological study with a quantitative approach, conducted in the following stages: establishment of the conceptual framework, instrument development, content evaluation by expert judges, and pretesting. The conceptual framework was based on a scoping review conducted according to the recommendations of the Joanna Briggs Institute and on the analysis of international instruments. The review identified 2,920 records; after removing 1,398 duplicates, 1,522 records underwent screening, 136 were assessed in full text, and 104 studies comprised the final sample. The synthesis of evidence supported the definition of six dimensions and the development of an initial set of 30 items. Content evaluation was performed by eight expert judges using the Item-Level Content Validity Index (I-CVI) and the mean CVI of the dimensions. Pretesting was conducted with 21 patients who underwent elective surgical procedures. Results: Following expert evaluation, the instrument was refined to 33 items distributed across the following dimensions: Communication, Patient-Centered Care, Perioperative Journey, Perceived Safety of Care, Quality of Care, and Overall Experience. Mean CVI values across the dimensions ranged from 0.82 to 1.00 for clarity, 0.95 to 1.00 for relevance, and 0.95 to 1.00 for pertinence. During pretesting, 90.5% of participants rated the instrument as excellent, 9.5% as good, and 100% stated that they would recommend its use. Conclusion: The instrument, comprising 33 items distributed across six dimensions, demonstrated favorable initial evidence of content validity and adequate comprehension by the target population. Further studies are needed to evaluate additional measurement properties.
