The present work approaches the subject of the social responsibility of businesses, considering the implications that the institutional environment exerts on business practices. The business world has increasingly emitted signals acknowledging its social duties, and with regards to Brazil, this has mainly occurred during the last decade of twentieth century. During this period, while taking the shoe industry of Franca as an object of study, the factories social responsibility is manifested in the creation of the Pro-Child Institute as a reaction taken by the local entrepreneurs against allegations of the use of child labor in the productive chain. The transformations verified in the national institutional environment are analyzed in the space of the four classic dimensions of the business social responsibility (economic, legal, ethical and philanthropic), aiming to understand the determining institutions for the phenomenon studied from the point of view of the actors. The perception of the footwear manufacturers associated with the Pro-Child Institute is obtained by means of interviews and survey of the historical declarations registered by the media. The content analysis is made by use of a matrix of thematic categories compatible with the treatment given to the subject of business social responsibility according to the influence of the institutions. The results reveal the preponderant force of economic interests associated with the international market, and the national fragility in the application of the legal measures, in the field of external social obligations, as well as the moral complacency of the actors involved and the restricted contribution of the governing structures toward philanthropic action to transform the local values relative to the use of child labor. The legitimacy of the businesses intermix with the economic interests in the reduction in the costs of transactions and its social representation, as to the relative weight of the institutions that conform to the environment.

During the last few years is possible to observ an significant increase of real time applications, , mainly of multimedia applications (e.g. video and voice streamming). Factors such as the popularization of broadband (e.g. XDSL) and wireless (e.g. 802.11 familiy and 802.15 pattern) networks, associated to the appearance of better devices and the increase of user s communications need, have contributed. Currently, with the appearance of new concepts of communications like home networks, it is possible to predict that real time applications will be part of user s daily. Anticipating a solution to that predict, this work proposes a proxy architecture with priorities of services for real time remote procedure calls, that uses the earlier amount of tra_c to predict the future occupation network, and choose the most appropriate policy to adapt the proxy to the environment future states.

Wireless sensor networks are increasingly being deployed for fine-grain monitoring of physical environments subjected to critical conditions such as fire, leaking of toxic gases and explosions. A great challenge to these networks is to provide channels that satisfy the necessities of the applications for events propagation, even in the presence of emergency conditions that can lead to node failures and path disruption to the sink that receives those events. Quality of Service (QoS) mechanisms can be applied that meet application requirements such as: low latency and packet delivery reliability, fast path repair in the presence of faults and network longevity with uniform energy dissipation. This work presents QoS-based routing solutions, which aims to meet, simultaneously, the main requirements mentioned above. The proposed solutions were implemented and simulated in the NS-2 simulator. Important metrics, such as end-to-end delay, packet loss rate, control messages overhead and energy consumption, were evaluated. The results show that the proposed solutions can be a potential alternative to the supervision and control of physical environments subject to emergency situations

Building actions related to health and safety in small and medium enterprises are not easy tasks, since these enterprises need to deal with poor information, lack of available resources and methodologies developed according to big company characteristics. Based on Case Studies techniques, the present study investigated in four SME not only the way health and safety interventions are carried on, but the reasons why they are conducted that way as well. This investigation made us conclude that lack of available resources, poor information access, the firm culture and management model exert clear influence on the way Heath and Safety actions are conducted. Ergonomics, if conducted in the small firm, will be guided by perception and based on informality, either for changes or measures of the changes. We can conclude that some rules and laws, as well as ergonomic tools, should be developed according to the limitations and needs of the small and medium firms, and so be used to help improve health and safety into them.

Different forms of iron had been determined in the blood of animals with resistance and sensitivity to bovine s ticks. The determined variables were: Iron in total, plasma and serum blood, quantified by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS); Fe (II), and Fe (III), quantified by spectrophotometry by flow injection analyses; iron freedom through flow dialysis and quantification by g raphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GFAAS); and hematocrit (packed cell volume). The used techniques and the developed methodologies are shown as complementary and adequate for the inquiry of the forms of iron founded in the blood. Blood digestion was not necessary for FAAS total iron determination, avoiding possible contaminations and decreasing the time spending to sample preparation. The Fe(II) and Fe(III) flow injection speciation presented good reproducibility and easy to implement in routine analysis. After freedom iron separation by dialysis membrane, GFAAS allowed the determination of small iron amounts. A statistical study was used for better comparison among the evaluated variables. The t test indicated differences between Canchim and Angus animals resistant and sensible to ticks related to iron amount in the blood s plasma, and in the Fe(III) amount between Angus resistant and sensible animals. In spite of no conclusives, the results indicated a possible tendency related to bovine ticks resistance and iron blood form. With the use of the methodologies defined in the present work, studies with a grater number of animals and small variables could be applied to confirm this hypothesis.

As availability of data from several areas of knowledge grows, it is even more necessary to develop effective techniques to retrieve the desired information, aiming to reduce irrelevant answers and ensure that relevant results are not ignored. Considering this context, we present the FOQuE system, developed to perform query expansion in order to retrieve semantically relevant and broad results. Based on fuzzy ontologies, this system is able to obtain approximate results that satisfy user requirements according to expansion parameters defined by the user. The additional answers retrieved by the FOQuE system are classified according to the semantic expansion performed and the relevance to the query, therefore it is possible to improve results that are presented to the user.

This research aimed to develop a set of sustainability indicators for water resources management (CISGRH) in the Tiete-Jacare Basin Committee ambit. The CISGRH development occurred by three main steps. The first step consisted on conceptual base structuring and empiric object characterization, and this phase had as main product a group of specific sustainability principles applied to water resources management. There were also studied National and International experiences for indicators proposition and use, which subsidized, on second phase, proposition a list of potential indicators. Three consultation processes were accomplished, seeking to identify principal problems related to water resources to a specific area and possible indicators to monitor them. The involved agents direct or indirectly with water resources management and the specific region, such as committee members, academic and technical specialists, were consulted. The results obtained by undertaken consultations based the third phase that consisted on the CISGRH structuring. The obtained indicators could previously be correlated with most of specific sustainability indicators principles identified. It was still looked for to characterize each one indicator, under aspects as: obtaining process or calculation, possible data sources, climbs determination, frequency and wanted tendency. From the CISGRH elaboration process could be observed that different actors' participation to indicators and aspects or problems selection, to be monitored, is very valuable, bringing benefits as to insert them in the context and larger their involvement. Although the set of indicators have been submitted to different actors and analyses, it is recommended that these indicators are reviewed and updated continually, with intention to assist for new demands that can appear in CBH-TJ.

In this work, we study the Artin braid group, B(n), and the confguration spaces (ordered and unordered) of a path connected manifold of dimension ¸ 2. The fundamental group of confguration space (unordered) of IR2 is identifed with the Artin braid group. This identifcation is used to conclude that the confguration space of IR2 is an Eilenberg-MacLane space of type K(B(n), 1). Therefore, it can be proved that the braid group B(n) contains no nontrivial element of the finite order. We use this fact to prove a generalization of a 2−dimensional version of the Borsuk-Ulam theorem presented by Connett [3].

The basic result of a soccer game is the final scoreboard, which can be seen as a bivariate random vector. Theoretically and based on existent literature we can argue that the number of marked gols by a team in a game obeys a (univariate) Poisson distribution. Thus, the Bivariate Poisson distributions are studied, in special for the class "of Holgate" (1964). Using as information the recent results of the teams, whose confrontation we want to model, several methods were used for parameters estimation of the Bivariate Poisson class "of Holgate". The idea is to use procedures that supply the probabilities of occurrence of placares, so that thus the probability of the occurrence of a certain result (team home´s victory, draw or defeat) can be calculated properly. The parameters of Bivariate Poisson distribution "of Holgate" are assumed to have a dependence factors, such as attack, defense and field, that possibly explain the numbers of goals.

Addressees the systematization of logistical and commercial aspects of São Paulo s sugar exports through Santos Port facilities. Local political and economical liberal transformations that took place by the beginning of 90 s had seen Estate assets being given to private investments (both in agricultural and port operations). As a result, this new institutional environment allowed the occurrence of hybrids corporate structures to coordinate logistical sugar and alcohol-ethanol exports from inland facilities to the Santos port. The main question is how this adaptation interferes on infrastructural and operational logistics management derived from new transactions within international sugar mayor traders. The main units of analysis are: i) São Paulo s state sugar producers (industrial plants) and port logistics providers; ii) port logistics providers and food trading companies. Results shall foster the comprehension on logistical process and relations amongst the three main actors across the sugar plantsport facilities chain. There are three goals to be achieved: i) identify the total extent of logistical domain across sugar s distributional channels via port of Santos; ii) how logistical assets and processes are developed or provided within those actors; iii) describe the difference among Santos port operations service providers, in relation value-added competitive basis. Theoretical framework blends logistics and supply chain management with foreign trade prospects as a guideline to collect data and empirical evidences. This works object is the São Paulo sugar plants-port of Santos facilities logistics chain.

Nowadays, the microorganisms are responsible for the production of several antibiotics, immunosuppressant and antitumors, furthermore they are extremely important in industrial process. This work describes the production process and the isolation of the citrinin (234,6 mg/L) and of the mycophenolic acid (371,2 mg/L) with high purity levels in the process of extraction of a fermentation of 8 and 12 days respectively of a cultivation in liquid in Czapek medium enriched with 0,2% of extract of yeast utilizing the fungi Penicillium Catl1.1 and Penicillium sp. Casp5, isolated of the Coffea arabica L. after asepsis, as well, the development of an analytical methodology to quantify this compounds using the NMR. Additionally, on this work, we describe the isolation and the structural elucidation of an new alkaloid from prodiginine class with modification on ring (C), from an extract produced by Streptomyces violaceusniger violaceusniger actinomycete, isolated as an endophyte from Zea mays L. leaves and identified by Costa (2005), which was able to inhibit the growing of phytopatogens with economic value (Pythium aphanidermatum, Rhizoctonia solani, Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, Phytophthora parasitica e Fusarium moniliforme). Therefore, Finally, due to the results obtained during the execution of this work, is able to conclude that the Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, beyond be presented like an efficient analytic technique in the quantification of the citrinin and of the mycophenolic acid in the extract fungi, was fundamental in the monitoring and optimization of the conditions of extraction during the period of 20 days of fermentation. Like this, to NMR is a technique that will be utilized in the process production and optimization of the substances produced by microorganisms in industrial scale.

Stretching by the global postural re-education method (GPR) has been widely used as a physical therapeutic procedure for postural alterations, but its action on the cardio-respiratory system has been little documented. However, scientific evidence is necessary to validate it as an alternative treatment. Within this context, three studies were carried out with the objective of verifying the effect of stretching the respiratory muscle chain in the open-arm, open hip joint angle posture by the GPR method on cardio-respiratory responses. Twenty young (22.7±2.5 years old), healthy, sedentary (VO2max: 30.2±4.3 mL.kg.min-1) men with BMI = 25.3±1.5 kg/m2 were studied, divided at random into two groups of ten: the control group (CG) that did not take part in the stretching and the group submitted to treatment (GPR-G). The intervention consisted of two weekly stretching sessions, each of 30 min, for eight weeks, giving a total of 16 sessions. In the first study, the maximal respiratory pressure and the respiratory coefficient were assessed by way of a manovacuometer and thoracoabdominal cirtometry, respectively. Only the GPR-G presented greater values for inspiratory (IPmax) and expiratory (EPmax) maximal pressures and for axillary, xyphoid and abdominal cirtometry after the intervention period. The results showed that the method caused a beneficial effect on respiratory muscle force and on thoracoabdominal mobility, contributing to an improvement in respiratory mechanics. In the second study, pulmonary function was assessed by spirometry. The manoeuvres of slow vital capacity (SVC), forced vital capacity (FVC) and maximal voluntary ventilation (MVV) were carried out. The results showed there was a significant increase in the values for SVC, inspiratory capacity (IC), FVC, forced expiratory volume in the first second (FEV1) and MVV for the GPR-G after the training period, providing evidence that the proposed stretching was efficient in promoting an increase in pulmonary capacity and volume. In the third study, the effect of stretching on the autonomic modulation of the heart rate (HR) and on the ventilatory and metabolic variables was assessed at rest and during the cardio-pulmonary exercise test respectively. The ventilatory and metabolic variables were captured using an automatic metabolic system and the HR using a one-channel heart monitor. The exercise test was carried out using a cycle ergometer, with 20 to 25 W/min increments up to physical exhaustion. Intervention did not change the variables studied either at rest or during the cardio-pulmonary exercise test, for either of the groups. These results showed that the respiratory muscle chain stretching exercise did not promote any adaptations with respect to HR neither at rest and the ventilatory and metabolic variables during the exercise, which could be attributed to the noninvolvement of the major muscle groups in the type of protocol used. Finally, the results obtained in the three studies gave evidence that stretching the respiratory muscle chain by the GPR method was efficient in promoting an increase in respiratory muscle strength, thoracoabdominal mobility and pulmonary function, reflecting in an increase in respiratory mechanics, this fact being attributable to the specificity of the training. In this way, the findings of the present study, reinforce the importance of the GPR method in the maintenance of the functional capacity of the respiratory chain muscles, suggesting that it could be used as an alternative treatment for dysfunctions of the respiratory mechanics.

This study describes the repertoire of social skills and the frequency of externalizing and internalizing behavior problem among children who presented both problem behavior and learning disabilities. The children were evaluated using a variety of measures in social, behavioral and academic domains, using a multiple assessment method (different procedures, instruments and informants) as former reserch points out to a positive bias between children self-evaluation and teacher evaluation. The objectives of this investigation were: (1) characterize the social skills repertorie of children with comorbity of problem behaviors and learning disabilities; (2) characterize the frequency of externalizing and internalizing problem behaviors among these children; (3) compare The social skills self-evaluation to teacher s evaluation; (4) comparing results obtained using two differents instruments for social skills evaluation; (5) Identify the children s special needs, related to the frequency of externalizing and internalizing behavior problem and to deficits in their social skills repertorie. Paticipants were 50 children, 9 to 12 years of age, in the third on fourth grade classes of five elementary public schools, and their teachers, in a small city in the state of São Paulo, Brasil. Three instruments the IMHSC-Del-Prette (Del Prette & Del Prette, 2005), SSRS-BR (Bandeira, Del Prette, Del Prette & Magalhães, s.d.) and TDE (Stein, 1994)-were used to assess the children s social, behavioral and academic skills. Scores were determined according to instructions in each manual and these data were analysed using descripitive and inferential statistical methods. The results show that these children present deficits in their social skills repertorie, along with high frequency of externalizing and internalizing problems. There were biases between self-evaluation and teacher evaluation. This research concludes that children with comorbity of learning disabilities and problem behavior have special needs that are strongly related to their social and behavioral skills deficits.

Self-service companies have been concerned about improving their performance in face of competition, either to conquer new markets or to keep in business. It is essential for them to present good quality products and/or services. Thus, in this study, one of the aims was to show that the waiting time in supermarket checkout lines is very important for service speed and, therefore, for the service level of customers. Other aims include the reasons why the customer goes regularly to a specific supermarket and, among these reasons, the relevance of each one in contrast with the others, and its relative importance. As a result, it was possible to contextualize the scenario in which customers view the importance of queues and their waiting time. Also, the level of schooling of the customers was associated with the factors that lead them to go regularly to the place. This is an interesting contribution because in Brazil there is a relation between income and schooling. Besides, the queueing models that may satisfactorily represent the supermarket checkouts were studied and the one that best represents the system was identified. It was verified that the customers change lines when they notice another line with fewer customers, and the size of this difference was assessed. The queueing model with jockeying was the one to best represent the situation commonly found in supermarkets, and it can offer subsidies for service improvement. In order to carry out this research some companies in the city of São Carlos/SP were contacted, and one among the ones that allowed the data collection was selected. Therefore, this is a case study, thus presenting inferential limitations.

The present study had the objectives to present the characteristics of a complex work, to demonstrate the management of these elements in the everyday job, besides relating this management with the social use of own s body in labor. To achieve these objectives, we studied the case of the domiciliar garbage collectors (garis), in a region of Belo Horizonte, Brazil. This thesis was divided in six chapters, to corroborate the hypothesis that the art of the worker to deal with the complexity of his/her job is the element that propitiates the regulation of workload. Therefore, this regulation can be limited by the personal characteristics of the workers and also for their job, introducing the notion of body economy . This thesis presented the refuse collector s job, the term regulation was differentiated from the term body economy , and some aspects of a complex work were described. The methodology of the Ergonomic Work Analysis (EWA) and some of its techniques were used to get the data. Some of the corporal techniques employed by the refuse collectors in their work were presented and analyzed, according to the complexity of their daily work. The management of the various characteristics of refuse domiciliary refuse collection was demonstrated and, in the thesis discussion was related to body economy . The notion of body economy was deepened, demonstrating the characteristics of the work that make it possible or difficultate the regulation of the workload. Finally, questions for new researches have been raised, and suggested some ergonomics recommendations to improve the conditions of the collectors work. We suggest to the professionals who auto-intitulate ergonomists , should understand the reality of subjects work, before prescribing postures and movements that they consider correct or ideal

The present work aimed to analyze the educational politics implemented for the overcoming of the illiteracy in the Primary Education, in its modality of attending young people and adults, starting from the 1990s. Our central objective was to understand how these programs were delimited facing the direction of the publicization of the social services and the directions from the reforms implemented in Brazil in the 1990s. We took as empirical basis for our study the actions developed in the city of Araraquara in the period from 2001 to 2006, emphasizing the partnership between the City Department of Education and a philantropic entity. We intended to understand how the promotion of partnerships between the public power and the not-state entities can be considered as a factor of excellency for a wider administrative rationality, based in the principles of the effectiveness, efficiency and effectivity of the services offered to the citizens, or whether the partnerships carried through with these institutions affirm the principles of a political culture based on the boundaries of the patrimonialism and the clientelism, structural marks in the formation of the Brazilian State.
