Based on the theoretical field of Paleontology at the interface with discourse studies, the present research aimed to understand the imaginary representations of the paleontologist and Paleontology in three foreign films: Bringing Up Baby (1938), Jurassic Park (1993) and Ammonite (2020). The aim was to analyze how Paleontology and the paleontologist and their craft appear in the three cinematographic materialities, understanding the differences and similarities with what is established by the scientific field. In addition to the concept of Paleontology, we appropriate the notion of imaginary and gender in the analysis. The analytical work considered not only the different periods in which the films were produced, but also the genre of each of them, since, as a theoretical assumption, the typology (comedy, action and biographical drama) also counts in the process of significance. As a result, the analysis showed that Ammonite is the film that comes closest to the field of Paleontology, whether due to the use of technical and scientific terms, or the way it portrays the paleontologist's job, while Bringing up baby, as it is a genre film comical, it is the furthest away from the field of Paleontology. Jurassic Park is in an intermediate position, oscillating between a fantastical and stereotypical representation of Paleontology and a relatively appropriate representation according to scientific discourse.

In modern societies, science is basis for and social, political and economic debates and decision-making. However, we are witnessing a detachment between science and society that leads to a trust decrease in scientific research and depreciation of science. Thereby we understand that scientific dissemination is a tool for rapprochement between science and society, by sharing scientific content to a wide audience, informing, educating and including the population in discussions about science and technology. If before the press was the main source of scientific dissemination, nowadays, with digital media and social networks occupying a large part of people's lives, communicating science in the virtual environment is essential for its democratization. Scientific dissemination on YouTube has become a popular method for scientists and science enthusiasts to share their knowledge with a wide audience. Therefore, our objective is to analyse the university's open science dissemination practices by studying the Click Science channel, produced by the Open Interactivity Laboratory for Dissemination of Scientific and Technological Knowledge at the Federal University of São Carlos (Laboratório Aberto de Interatividade para Disseminação do Conhecimento Científico e Tecnológico da Universidade Federal de São Carlos - LAbI UFSCar). We studied the relationships between science and society and the characteristics of scientific communication and dissemination to contextualize the relevance of scientific popularization for both researchers and population. Sociability and socialization practices in digital media were addressed to better understand society's relationship with online communication, presenting YouTube as a scientific dissemination tool for universities. We also investigated the university's scientific dissemination practices, strategies and challenges in the digital environment through analysis of Click Ciência channel. Based on the channel playlists and on videos with the highest number of views, we focussed on content that targeted the public, seeking to understand what makes a production attractive to the audience. We understand that following and adapting to current communication trends and changes is vital for scientific dissemination and for the relationship between science and society. These transformations have been constant and variable, which requires continuous studies and research.

As fronteiras do trabalho digital: autonomia, flexibilidade, criatividade e sincronia temporal
(Universidade Federal de São Carlos, 2023-12-15) Pelegrini, João Gabriel Selles; Lima, Jacob Carlos; https://lattes.cnpq.br/9244132532446607; https://orcid.org/0000-0001-6475-9575; https://lattes.cnpq.br/5153829875111354; https://orcid.org/0000-0001-6964-5411
Starting from the theme of autonomy/subordination of labour in the context of capitalist domination, this paper analyses the work process of digital workers linked to the software development process. As a central problem, we question the supposed autonomy, flexibility and creativity that would define this type of work, especially when compared to types that would be subordinated to management schemes such as Taylor-Fordism. In order to investigate this problem, we analysed the work process of 16 digital workers through semi-structured interviews. This study is based on the following analytical hypothesis: the market demand for certain skills, such as responsibility and autonomy, operation and creativity, organisation and flexibility, results in flexible working hours when they express the logic of a synchronous temporal organisation of the work process. This synchrony is expressed in the possibility of the work process taking place at the same time as activities that would otherwise be free time. Synchrony is also found in the combination of quantitative metrics (hours, days, weeks, sprints, measures set by companies and measured by platforms) and qualitative metrics (deliveries and what is delivered, problem solving, productivity of time in relation to the amount spent, for example). From the research we have found that the skills mentioned above are ways of working and living that are shaped by this temporal logic and that they produce a digital worker who is always connected to the demands of the company and always ready to start their work process, insofar as they are responsible for the market objectives of those who employ them, flexible in relation to the demands and forms of management needed to organise digital work processes, and finally capable of performing the activities needed to fulfil what is required of them as useful in their workforce. However, digital workers show that, to the extent that they incorporate this way of living and working, they either adapt to it, reproducing the organisational principles of the work process and the underlying temporal logic, or they oppose and resist this temporal regime, developing thoughts that are critical of it.

O campo da política habitacional no último desmanche: ocupações, movimentos sociais e ativismo identitário
(Universidade Federal de São Carlos, 2023-12-15) Breda, Thalles Vichiato; Eckardt, Frank; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-5176-6503; Georges, Isabel Pauline Hildegard; https://lattes.cnpq.br/8496471825849003; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8789-1912; https://lattes.cnpq.br/5354724785221926; https://orcid.org/0000-0001-5584-3003
This thesis aims to understand the changes in the field of Brazilian housing policy in the context of the “last dismantling”, between 2013 and 2022. It seeks to map the shifts between the conjuncture produced by the Workers' Party governments, from 2003 to 2016; and the post-coup conjuncture, between May 2016 and 2022, represented by the governments of Michel Temer and Jair Bolsonaro. The specific objectives are to understand (a) the normative and programmatic framework in the field of institutional housing policy in the post-coup period, and (b) the forms of claim by those who have no part, i.e. organized civil society, social movements, political parties, among other actors, in the struggle for access to housing and land. The hypothesis of this research is that these milestones have updated the ways in which territories of poverty are produced, the dispute over urban space, the relationship with the state and different actors, and the very concept of social housing developed during Lulism. The methodology used was based on the analysis of documents and laws; a bibliographical review; participant observation; and multi-sited and multi-scalar ethnography. Empirically, we started by analyzing the cycle of occupations in the city of São Carlos, which began in 2014 and, based on the threads tied together in the “In search of a dream” occupation, we followed the Movement of Homeless Workers (MTST) in the metropolitan region of São Paulo, through my entry into the MTST's School of Grassroots Work in 2023. Some results can be pointed out. The dismantling of institutional mechanisms for access to housing represented by the PMCMV and the June 2013 Journeys, combined with the coup d'état in 2016, paved the way for a “new urban activism”, made up of a set of collectives, networks of social movements, occupation practices aimed at fighting for the right to the city and the right to life itself. This means the production of a new constellation of initiatives, the broadening of a repertoire of struggles and forms of organization, on a new scale of action. In the context of the overlapping of conservative governments with the pandemic scenario, “emergency struggles” were established due to the historical demotion in the conditions of social reproduction. Access to housing was replaced by access to partially urbanized land. Occupations took center stage and gained new contours. The normative framework proposed for the housing field operates through a gray zone, opening the way for different non-institutional actors to act in the housing field. The actors analyzed were social movements, political parties, technical assistance, the evangelical church and organized crime. Against this backdrop, social movements in the last decade, especially the MTST, have increasingly taken up social demands, both in the field of minority rights and in the field of sustainability, labor rights, etc. Identity politics has played an important role within this urban activism, through the identity construction of a “new” historical subject of legitimate social transformation - the peripheral subject with plural demands - which slowly seems to replace the proletarian. These modulations are producing a moral market in identities. The MTST has positioned itself as an important political actor from the vacuum produced by other collective organizations, such as the trade union, and operates an arrangement between the peripheral population and the progressive sectors of the middle class, in which the conflict is reterritorialized from the urban peripheries.

(Universidade Federal de São Carlos, 2023-12-15) Romano, Soraia; Mendes, Enicéia Gonçalves; https://lattes.cnpq.br/3897627554738983; https://orcid.org/0000-0003-3673-0681; https://lattes.cnpq.br/0795334188242497; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-5436-9490
Universal Design for Learning is an effective tool to enhance methods, resources, strategies and means of evaluation to facilitate the learning of all students. Schooling in diversity, here is defended as the differences present in all students to participate and learn. And thus, propagates in an incessant search for the promotion of innovative practices and in a process of transformation to make the curriculum accessible to all. The promotion of breaking down barriers in different learning spaces and flexibility, as to the ways of learning and valuing the potentiality of different students, is not yet legitimate. Based on the innovations pointed out by the literature on Universal Design for Learning, the purpose of this study is to develop, implement and evaluate a teacher training program subsidized by the DUA Principles and Guidelines with the research question about how training can contribute to the development of classes based on principles and guidelines that meet the needs of participation of all students to promote learning. As a methodology, we chose collaborative action research to constitute the training of different education professionals in reference to theory and, at the same time, collaborate for the implementation of classes focused on eight classes from 1st to 3rd year of elementary school. The study included 37 students, teachers of regular basic education, special education teachers, educational managers and professionals from the multidisciplinary team. For the data collection, different instruments were used, among them: participants' characterization sheet, class plans formulated collaboratively, lesson planning sheet, photos and videos of innovative classes, Evaluation sheet of the Training Programme and evaluation roadmap for the focus group. The training program was conducted in three meetings of three hours duration and use of different types of materials to motivate participants and obtain different forms of representation. The research had its data found submitted to content analysis with triangulation of different sources. As results, we found the adherence to the training plan implemented and classes planned based on the principles of DUA, which highlighted the use of multiple forms, especially in the principles of engagement and action and expression of different students. The principle of representation had greater resistance and the limits of the research are the lack of opportunity for the continuity of the didactic sequence and the monitoring in the medium and long term. The program was evaluated by all participants through questions with satisfaction scale and open questions for participants. It is concluded that the collaborative proposal in all educational processes present in the classroom and the school accessibility action are important for the different teams working in the school. Finally, it is directed that, for the effectiveness of the DUA in a short period, other research should be favored to apply medium and long term, as a way to ennoble scientific evidence for all modalities of teaching.

Among the fields of study in Tissue Engineering is the development of materials that present good mechanical performance, high bioactivity, and that can be processed using techniques that allow control flexibility regards architecture, such as fused filament fabrication (FFF). In this sense, the incorporation of bioactive glasses (BG) into polymer matrix is interesting, especially when they are in the form of continuous fibers (CF), filler with high reinforcing potential. Coating may be a method to prevent excessive polymer degradation during incorporating of BGs. Depending on the bioabsorption rate of the coating, it is possible to control the induction time of the bioactive effect of CFs. As a proof of concept, conventional glass CFs were coated with polycaprolactone (PCL) via extrusion. The resulting filaments, with up to 12.5% by mass of fillers, were processed via FFF. Flow modeling during FFF with CFs was developed, something not yet reported in the literature, and used to justify the quality of the printed materials. It was estimated that, with the CFs in the printing nozzle, the melt is subjected to 481 s^-1 of shear rate and 1.95 MPa/mm of pressure gradient, values three and two times greater compared to the case of neat PCL, respectively. The tensile strength of the formulation with CFs, 32 MPa, was twice as high compared to neat polymer. As part of the second front of this investigation, for the first time, PCL composites with short fibers or powder of F18 BG were produced via extrusion and FFF. This BG was chosen due to its high bioactivity and wide processing range, which allows it to be obtained in the form of fibers. F18 promoted mineralization and in vitro cellular activity. The research contributes to the development of scaffolds with interesting characteristics for biomedical applications.

This study aims to explore the understanding of how technology is used in the lives of elderly people residing in long-term care institutions. The research adopts a qualitative, exploratory, and descriptive approach, through the case study methodology. The participants are collaborators and elderly individuals aged 60 years or older, who are institutionalized and part of the digital inclusion project at the Long-Term Institution (ILPI), in the city of Ribeirão Preto, state of São Paulo, Brazil. The relevance of this research is highlighted by the global context shaped by the unprecedented challenge of the COVID-19 pandemic. SARS-CoV-2, known as the novel Coronavirus, triggered COVID-19, a highly risky infectious respiratory disease, as designated by the WHO. The pandemic had a profound impact worldwide, affecting people in various nations. The elderly proved to be particularly vulnerable to the virus. The initial response to the pandemic was marked by uncertainty due to the lack of effective treatments. The WHO recommended social distancing measures to contain the spread of the virus and relieve pressure on global health systems. Many countries imposed compulsory isolation, especially for higher-risk groups such as the elderly, suspending non-essential activities and restricting movement. This resulted in significant distancing and isolation challenges, deeply impacting people's lives. Strategies were directed to reduce this isolation, and technology played a crucial role. The adaptation of the elderly to the use of digital technologies represented an abrupt transition, requiring additional effort to familiarize themselves with these tools, aiming to preserve their safety, independence, and socialization. In this context, this study investigates digital inclusion as an essential tool in the lives of the elderly in long-term care institutions. The research contributes to the understanding of the growing importance of digital inclusion in today's society, not only promoting socialization but also being a valuable tool to face challenges, such as those experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic, and to deal with potential future difficulties. Therefore, it represents a significant step in understanding the needs and potential benefits of digital inclusion for the elderly in long-term care contexts.

A promoção do engajamento das famílias no Programa Criança Feliz
(Universidade Federal de São Carlos, 2023-12-15) Marini, Bruna Pereira Ricci; Della Barba, Patrícia Carla de Souza; https://lattes.cnpq.br/6448489426438006; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7893-8133; https://lattes.cnpq.br/2001819857612181; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-0375-4735
Strategies for care and promotion of childhood development have evolved substantially over the last century. In this context, Early Intervention with a Family-Centered Approach has emerged in terms of effectiveness, evidence-based and quality interventions, taking part in the list of those currently recognized as recommended practices. Studies have shown that the engagement of families is a decisive component to achieve the expected results in this care model, since they are expected to participate and strengthen their knowledge, skills and beliefs of self-efficacy in caring for children. Despite its importance, this is still a briefly studied element. In Brazil, the launch of the Programa Criança Feliz (Happy Child Program) produced an approximation with this intervention model; however, its results are still measured only by the outcome in children. Thus, this study aims to elucidate the strategies adopted in Programa Criança Feliz, a program of home visits with an approach to promote the engagement of families with children up to six years old, with disabilities and/or exposed to a situation of vulnerability and social risk. This is a cross-sectional, descriptive and exploratory study, with a qualitative approach, developed in four steps. Step 1: analysis of the incorporation of strategies aimed at family engagement in the decrees, ordinances and theoretical instruments that build up the reference for the training of visitors; Step 2: exploratory study with coordinators and supervisors of Programa Criança Feliz; Step 3: exploratory study with visitors from Programa Criança Feliz; Step 4: exploratory study with families part of Programa Criança Feliz. The sample was selected in a non-probabilistic way and for convenience, being composed of two coordinators, three supervisors, seven visitors and five families who take part in Programa Criança Feliz in the municipalities belonging to the Regional Direction of Social Assistance and Development of Araraquara, state of São Paulo. nData from the first step of the study was collected from documents and materials that support the training of program visitors. In the second, third and fourth steps, data collection was carried out through semi-structured interviews with coordinators, supervisors, visitors and families. Data analysis was carried out using the content analysis technique, in thematic analysis mode. The results of the study allowed us to verify that family engagement is a construct approached indirectly in the context of the Programa Criança Feliz, since there is little evidence on how it is promoted and how it impacts on other actions developed. Aspects related to the structure and implementation of the program were identified as producing negative impacts on engagement, as well as social vulnerability and its consequences on family conditions. Even so, elements were identified that favor and direct the outcomes of behavioral, cognitive and emotional involvement that build up the motivational structure of engagement, in addition to relational practices that were considered of great importance for this process. Thus, the study points out that there are still gaps in the Programa Criança Feliz proposal, which are related not only to the conditions of engagement, but to previous issues, such as the need to strengthen policies that focus on guaranteeing fundamental rights, aimed at strengthening families' care conditions for their children.

This study primarily investigates the trajectory of a teacher-researcher in the process of changing her approach while designing and teaching English using an instructional material with focus on meaning for students majoring in Mathematics at a professional and technological educational institution. To achieve this, a needs analysis of the learning needs of the mathematics students was carried out. After, an instructional material was developed, and then implemented. This is a qualitative, exploratory, and interventionist study conducted with the participation of a teacher-researcher and students at a campus of the Federal Institute of São Paulo, in an English course for a Mathematics degree. The course was delivered remotely due to the restrictions imposed by Covid-19. Instruments for data generation and collection were the following: the instructional material, questionnaires, interviews, the teacher-researcher's diaries, recordings of meetings between the teacher-researcher and her research advisor, recorded lessons, and the chat logs from these lessons. Data analysis was carried out through triangulation and content analysis to categorize the data. Thus, this study aimed at understanding the teacher-researcher's process of changing her approach in three aspects: (i) how the teacher-researcher's trajectory was characterized; (ii) how the teacher-researcher materialized the desired (communicative) approach in the instructional materials developed; and (iii) how the realized approach during teaching with the materials was characterized. In this sense, the theoretical framework that guides this research addresses the concept of approach in language teaching (Anthony, 1963; Richards; Rodgers, 1982; Prabhu, 1987; Allwright, 1991; Almeida Filho, 1997), discusses the Global Operation Model of Language Teaching (OGEL) and its relation to the change in teaching approach (Almeida Filho, 1993, 2012, 2015, 2018a, 2023). Also, it brings insights about grammar and communicative approach and teaching practices aligned with these paradigms (Almeida Filho, 2001, 1993, 2012, 2015, 2018b; Brown, 2015; Freitas, 2013; Gomes, 2016a, 2016b; Richards; Rodgers, 2014; Vieira-Abrahão, 2015). In addition, it discusses communicative language teaching (Almeida Filho, 2000, 2015; Almeida Filho; Barbirato, 2000; Barbirato, 1999, 2005; Brown, 1994, 2015; Littlewood, 2013; Richards; Rodgers, 2014; Xavier, 2016) as well as thematic planning (Brinton; Snow, 2019; Brown, 2015; Byrnes, 2005; Crandall, 1994; Dueñas, 2004; Richards; Rodgers, 2014). The results revealed that the teacher-researcher's process of changing her approach was complex and non-linear. It was also evident that distinctive features of the communicative approach were incorporated into the instructional materials, such as a focus on meaning and meaningful activities for the learners. Finally, it was observed that the teaching with the materials was influenced by two approaches: the one represented by the instructional materials and the one declared by the teacher-researcher.

(Universidade Federal de São Carlos, 2023-12-15) Oliveira, Cristian Hessel de; Sitta, Elton; https://lattes.cnpq.br/4326476348284298; https://lattes.cnpq.br/1960387014755134
The photoelectrochemical production of hydrogen (H2) from the water splitting reaction in photoelectrochemical cells is a promising alternative for the production of clean and sustainable energy. However, this process still faces some challenges, such as charge carrier recombination, photocorrosion of photoelectrodes, and slow kinetics of the oxidation reaction in the anodic compartment. By using dopants and co-catalysts, charge carrier recombination can be minimized. While the use of sacrificial agents can help to reduce the photocorrosion of the material, as well as increase the activity of the system by replacing the water oxidation reaction. In this work, the study of the oxidation reaction of different biomass-derived alcohols (methanol, ethylene glycol, and glycerol) as substitutes for the water oxidation reaction is performed, where the effect of the increase in the chain length of these alcohols (structure) with respect to the observed activity (reactivity) and inhibition of photocorrosion was investigated. CdS, BiVO4, BiVO4:Zr-Mo, and BiVO4:Zr-Mo:Pt were the photoanodes evaluated. With respect to CdS, the addition of biomass-derived alcohols to the system strongly inhibited the photocorrosion of the material. The use of dopants and co-catalysts in the BiVO4 photoanode increased the activity of the system for photoelectrochemical oxidation, due to the increased light absorption and the decrease in recombination between the charge carriers. And, regardless of the semiconductor, larger photoelectrochemical oxidation currents densities were observed in the presence of biomass-derived alcohols than only in water and, among the alcohols studied, the order of activity was: jMethanol < jEt.Glycol < jGlycerol < jSulfide, indicating that these alcohols act as hole scavengers and the increase in the number of [COH] groups seem to have a positive effect on increasing the activity of the system.
