This master's thesis, linked to the Professional Postgraduate Program in Education (PPGPE) at the Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCar), describes results and directions of an investigation that aimed to analyze the professional identity of Early Childhood Education teachers and the constitution of their practices, in relation to Mathematics, with babies and very young children, when participating in a study group. The research, of a qualitative nature, is based on the field of teaching narratives with the method of the German sociologist Fritz Schütze, which places as a base assumption the organization of data produced from the following steps: 1. Formal analysis of the text; 2. Structural description of the content; 3. Analytical abstraction; 4. Analysis of knowledge; 5. Contrastive comparison; and 6. Construction of a theoretical model. The theme highlights the work with mathematical language from zero to three years old by highlighting the construction of identity and the trajectories narrated by teachers, in a movement of continued training, in Early Childhood Education when they are part of the Study and Research Group "Other Views on Mathematics" (GEOOM/UFSCar). A possible contribution, in view of the conclusion, was the possibility of knowing, in more detail, who the daycare teachers are who participate in GEOOM/UFSCar, revealing their life paths, training, tensions and teaching when they reflected on the real pedagogical experience, given the few studies with mathematical language in the space-time of daycare centers.

In the context of household appliances studied in this research, the application of preventive maintenance principles in the supply chain is a major challenge due to the difficulty of communication, integration and cooperation between customers and suppliers. This is even more relevant when suppliers not only deliver parts and components, but also have tools from customer companies on loan, where responsibilities for tool maintenance are shared. This study therefore proposes a framework for incorporating preventive maintenance concepts into the maintenance of tools that are outsourced to third-party suppliers. The concepts presented in the framework were incorporated into software that includes a control dashboard to support the management of tool maintenance at third-party suppliers. To achieve this objective, the action research method was applied, consisting of three cycles. The first cycle was a development stage for the framework and software premises, the second cycle consisted of implementing the process and software guidelines at a first supplier in the home appliance chain, and the third cycle was responsible for expanding the process to a second supplier. As a result of the study, a structured framework is presented which is the basis for the software and dashboard that support the management of the proposed new model for preventive maintenance. The framework indicates a path for implementing and managing preventive maintenance at suppliers based on theory. In addition, the action research showed that the proposed framework is capable of generating greater integration and cooperation between the client company and its suppliers, increasing the companies' performance levels in the supply chain. The implementation of the framework through software and a dashboard enabled the implementation of preventive maintenance, which resulted in better quality levels in the suppliers' parts and fewer line stoppages. The limitations of the work are related to the impossibility of generalizing the results found through action research and also to the lack of quantitative analysis of the results obtained.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a common disease characterized by respiratory symptoms and decreased airflow due to inflammation of the airways and/or alveolar airways, usually caused by inhalation of harmful particles or gases, mainly due to the effect of tobacco. Peripheral muscle weakness affects about 20% of patients diagnosed with mild and moderate COPD and 40% in severe disease. Reduced muscle strength, decreased aerobic capacity, dependence on glycolytic metabolism and large amounts of lactate during exercise may be responsible for early muscle fatigue in these patients. An alternative that emerged to improve muscle performance and recovery was photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT). PBMT can stimulate mitochondrial activity, energy synthesis (adenosine triphosphate - ATP), stimulate muscle glycogen synthesis, and intensify the activity of antioxidant enzymes. Therefore, PBMT can benefit COPD patients in their performance in functional activities performed in their daily lives. Objectives: To determine whether the application of whole-body PBMT in a single session in patients with moderate to severe COPD promotes an improvement in dyspnea, lower limb fatigue, and functional performance as assessed by the one-minute sit-to-stand test (1SST) and the two-minute stationary gait test (SMT2'). Methods: This was a randomized, crossover and single-blind, sham-controlled clinical trial conducted in the city of São Carlos, São Paulo, Brazil, at the Laboratory of Spirometry and Respiratory Physiotherapy of UFSCar. We evaluated 22 patients with moderate to severe COPD, who underwent an assessment of functional performance and perception of dyspnea and fatigue of the lower limbs by means of 1SST and SMT2', before and after a single application of whole-body PBMT and sham. Results: After the application of whole-body PBMT, the patients' perception of lower limb fatigue decreased significantly compared to the sham application (p≤0.01) with medians 1 (0.5-0.0) and 2 (1.64 -2) respectively, in 1SST. Dyspnea and functional performance did not show significant changes (p>0.01) between whole-body PBMT and sham in 1SST. Dyspnea at SMT2’ decreased significantly (p≤0.01) compared to sham with medians 1 (0.5-1.75) and 2 (1.25-3), as well as muscle fatigue at lower limbs, 0 (0-1) and 3 (1.25-3), respectively. There was an improvement in the functional performance of SMT2’ comparing pre- and post- PBMT and sham (p≤0.01), but there was no significant change between whole-body PBMT and sham. Conclusion: Whole-body PBMT significantly reduced muscle fatigue in the lower limbs in 1SST and SMT2’ and significantly reduced dyspnea in the SMT2’. It did not significantly increase functional performance in 1SST and SMT2’, in a single session of whole-body PBMT of participants with moderate to severe COPD.

In the Bayer alumina production process, fluidized bed calciners use refractory linings to withstand erosive particles and temperatures above 900 °C. This work aims to enhance the geometric design of these linings by using Finite Element Method (FEM) to simulate their thermomechanical behavior, focusing on thermal analysis, layer interaction via friction coefficient, the impact of geometric parameters on thermal expansion and stresses, and expansion joint sizing. The results indicated that temperature-dependent properties and panel curvature altered the thermal gradient of the lining. However, variables such as the thickness of the working layer had a marginal impact on the temperature of the metal shell, suggesting low sensitivity of the external temperature to panel erosion. The friction coefficient between layers had minimal effect on thermal expansion, with a moderate increase in tensile stresses as the coefficient increased. Panel curvature had a significant impact, with curved panels expanding about 35 % more in the length direction compared to flat panels, affecting expansion joint design. Stresses concentrated at the edges of curved panels, while in flat panels, they were maximum at the center of the hot face. Empirical validation confirmed the effectiveness of the curved model and indicated the need to optimize anchor positioning to prevent crack propagation. Panel dimensions affected stresses, which increased with size and decreased with thickness, due to the balance between thermal gradient, moment of inertia, and bending moment. The ideal panel size was between 0.75 m and 1.0 m, balancing installation time and structural integrity. Proper material selection, such as reducing the thermal conductivity of the insulator, proved effective in reducing the likelihood of lining failure. Properly sizing expansion joints is essential to ensure both effective closure and structural stability.

The species Alouatta belzebul, known as the red-handed howler monkey, is classified as Vulnerable to extinction and occurs in the Amazon and the Pernambuco Endemism Center (PEC), a highly devastated segment of the Atlantic Forest located north of the São Francisco River mouth. Habitat fragmentation is one of the main threats to the conservation of this primate, affecting its distribution and behavior, such as vocalization and movement. One of the primary objectives of this research was to validate non-invasive methods for detecting the species in forest fragments of the PEC, located in the states of Alagoas, Paraíba, and Rio Grande do Norte, using water samples and the stomach content of flies and mosquitoes, through the employment of environmental DNA (eDNA) and invertebrate-derived DNA (iDNA) approaches, respectively. Additionally, a species distribution modeling (SDM) analysis was employed to predict potential occurrence areas of the species, using relevant environmental variables, such as precipitation, temperature, and land cover. The combined use of these methodologies proved to be an effective alternative for identifying the species and predicting its occurrence areas, contributing to the effective monitoring and conservation of the species. The results showed that iDNA enabled the detection of A. belzebul in the study area, revealing new areas of occurrence in Alagoas and Pernambuco. Modeling analyses indicated that areas with higher canopy height and tree cover are essential for the conservation of the species. The relationship between the species' presence and environmental variables highlights the importance of habitat integrity for the survival of A. belzebul. These findings can help identify areas most suitable for the creation of ecological corridors and critical or priority areas for the conservation of the species, supporting public policies aimed at the conservation of the species in the PEC. Thus, the results of this study not only add relevant information about the current and potential distribution of A. belzebul in the PEC but also prove useful for guiding management and monitoring actions for the species. Additionally, the combined use of alternative methods for species detection, such as eDNA and iDNA, with species distribution modeling analyses employed in this study constitutes a relevant model that can be applied to other threatened species in fragmented regions similar to the one studied. This work, therefore, advances not only the knowledge about the distribution and ecology of A. belzebul but also provides practical tools aimed at the monitoring and conservation of biodiversity.

Gonzaguinha was an artist whose experiences in Rio de Janeiro's Estácio de Sá neighborhood and on São Carlos Hill, coupled with his critical view of his lived reality, produced a significant musical legacy within Brazilian Popular Music (MPB). His unyielding connection to these places — as a boy from the favelas —was something he constantly recalled and emphasized. These early experiences formed the foundation of his artistic identity, earning him the nicknames "the street kid" or "the boy from the hill." After all, there were many challenges to overcome and confront. This context raises several questions: What was the essence of these places, and how did their unique character shape the music created by this artist? Our goal is to explore the relationship between Gonzaguinha's surroundings—specifically, Rio de Janeiro's Estácio neighborhood and São Carlos Hill during the first half of the 20th century—and the geographic context of this urban space. To achieve this, we analyzed Gonzaguinha's interviews, testimonials, lyrics, and songs, contextualizing them within our research on Rio's urban landscape and the distinct identity of the Estácio neighborhood. This analysis was informed by the ideas of Milton Santos and Ana Fani Carlos. Our findings reveal how the characteristics of these environments shaped Luiz Gonzaga Jr.'s artistic style, and conversely, how his music reflects a deep spatial understanding of his surroundings. This makes his work a valuable resource for analyzing urban spaces.

Continuous in-service training has proven to be an essential practice for the professional development of pedagogical coordinators, as it enables the constant updating of knowledge and skills, as well as the development of new competencies. In this context, the present research aims to understand how pedagogical coordinators perceive their continuous in-service training and its contribution to the development of their daily activities. To this end, a questionnaire was applied to pedagogical coordinators from the SESI-SP network to obtain information about their training experiences, and a discussion group was held to deepen the data collected. The questionnaire and discussion group data were categorized to highlight the most relevant results, describing in detail how they were trained and how this influenced their professional practice. Given our objective, we prioritized the analysis of the sections on performance, training, and profile. In the profile section, the data revealed that the majority of the coordinators have postgraduate degrees and chose courses directly related to educational management. Additionally, the analysis of the responses in the training section showed that most coordinators emphasize the importance of continuous training for pedagogical practice, stating that these trainings provide them with tools to face daily challenges. In the discussion group, the difficulty of reconciling work routines with the need to engage in continuous training was emphasized, highlighting the importance of training that adapts to their time availability and the specific needs of their professional practice. In the performance section, the coordinators pointed out that time management and setting priorities are crucial for the effectiveness in performing their duties. The implementation of organizational strategies and the delegation of tasks were considered essential to improving work efficiency and quality. The most impactful trainings were those that directly aligned with the needs of their daily practice, allowing for the immediate application of acquired knowledge. From the conclusions of this research, it is possible to perceive that, despite challenges such as the adequacy of training to practical needs and time limitations, continuous training is valued for promoting knowledge updating, pedagogical innovation, and strengthening professional identity. As the pedagogical coordinators were profiled, the results point to the effectiveness of adaptive and collaborative strategies, emphasizing the importance of a learning environment that values the sharing of experiences and critical reflection.

The rise of Sign Language Translators and Interpreters (also known as SLTI) in Brazil has been perceived in a myriad of spheres within society. These include mainstream education, from Elementary to High School years, in various community environments where mediation for communication between deaf and hearing people are necessary, as well as in most social media platforms. Nevertheless, it is perceivable that there are still gaps in interpretations which could be due to the lack of training of these professionals (Giamlourenço, 2018). Even with years of working in the field, most interpreters do not consider themselves competent to face the daily challenges in the educational sphere where the demand for this ype of professional has increased (Santos, 2014). Therefore, given the growing number of deaf students enrolled in schools, the need to train these educational interpreters (EI’s) has escalated. Thus, it is vital for them to be professionally qualified and feel confident to perform the role of mediator in order to positively contribute to deaf students’ learning journey (Santos, 2021). For this reason, the primary aim of this research is to investigate the effectiveness of mediated formative practices for the development of EIs' practices. The specific objectives include organizing a continuing education course for SLTI’s working at one of the campuses of the Federal Institute of São Paulo (participants), from a mediated perspective, to investigate whether reflection on practicing is effective in developing interpretive skills. The study was conducted using a qualitative, exploratory approach, through action research, offering a continuing education course for the participants, following the theoretical principles of Vygotsky ([1926] 2001; [1934] 1998; [1930] 1984; [1930] 2004). The training took place remotely. The sessions were recorded, and based on the collected data, an evaluation was made to determine which aspects of the training - based on mediation and reflection on practice - were most effective in developing these interpretive skills. The aim is to contribute to the field of training sign language translators and interpreters so they can carry out their work, enhancing the quality of deaf education.

The computational study of biological neural networks involves using real properties of neurons to simulate the dynamics of neuronal cells. Although recent neuroscience studies investigate the relationship between neurons and blood vessels, little is known about the influence of vascularization on the collective behavior of neurons. This study aims to create a computational model to abstract biological neural networks into complex networks, in order to obtain relevant data about the connectivity and resilience of these networks. Computational routines will be developed to simulate these networks and study the influence of neuron removal on the collective dynamics of the network. The removals represent the deactivation of neurons due to complete interruptions in blood flow resulting from the obstruction of blood vessels in a specific region. Data was obtained on the number of connected components and the largest connected components for scenarios of full networks and networks with removals depending on the vertices degrees, verifying greater network resilience to non-targeted attacks on neurons with high degrees. Additionally, data on neuronal dynamics, such as firing rate during time intervals and the number of firings in a simulation, were collected for different removal scenarios. The model produced can be used in neuroscience studies on neurovascular interactions. This study represents a first step in understanding how vascularization affects the dynamics of biological neural networks and their level of resilience to failures.

This research investigates the university as a symbolic space in which students are inserted when they start undergraduate studies, problematizing the classifications of professors as dominant agents in the field and influential on socially inclusive education. The general objective of this study is to analyze the beliefs about academic education and work expressed by professors in departments with high dropout and retention rates, aiming to understand how meritocratic or gift ideologies permeate the university field. This is a qualitative and field study, approaching a relational investigation defended by Pierre Bourdieu and Loic Wacquant. The data collection instruments are bibliographic and documentary research, analysis of Lattes curricula and in-depth interviews with university professors from departments that offer subjects with high dropout and retention rates. The data were analyzed through triangulation and discussed, in particular, with contributions from Pierre Bourdieu. The results lead us to infer that meritocracy is present in educational beliefs and in the selection that occurs through the education system, including universities. The organization of the professors’ Lattes curricula presents professional profiles with particularities of each department, but in all of them the progressive advancement from undergraduate to postgraduate studies, as well as into the position of teaching at universities, is noticeable. We conclude that the professors participating in our research demonstrate being previously inculcated by their families and schools with a recognition of education, presenting characteristics of a meritocratic ideology camouflaged in the association of performance with individual aspects, as well as having learned to adapt at university through the use of practical sense. With few questions and discussions about Affirmative Action, participants believe that the contents of subjects with high dropout and retention rates are highly complex and universal, corroborating symbolic violence and the maintenance of the university’s selective function. Such findings confirm our hypothesis that the beliefs of university professors are formed through an articulation between their positions in the field, which receives influences from the State as holder of the symbolic monopoly, and their habitus, formed throughout their socializing experiences.

Portuguese writer, translator, essayist and university professor, Frederico Lourenço released, in 2002, his first novel: Pode um desejo imenso, being awarded, the following year, with the Prémio Primeira Obra do P.E.N. Clube Português. The work narrates the internal and external romantic conflicts of the protagonist, university professor Nuno Galvão, during the moments preceding a colloquium on the Portuguese poet Luís de Camões, in the city of Lisbon, and those simultaneous to the event. In a game of metaphors and references to Greek culture, Nuno finds himself in love with his student and future master's advisor, Filipe Vaz, who, until the beginning of the plot, is in a relationship with another of the professor's students, Patrícia. While he comes into conflict with this forbidden desire, still considered taboo in today's society, the professor feels the repression of the colloquium organizers when they remove him from the opening of the event, because of the title of his conference: “Camões and D. António de Noronha: homoerotic echoes in Rimas”. Based on these aspects, this research project aims to analyze the references (both Greek and those from the poetry of Luís de Camões, a tutelary figure in Portuguese literature), and how these contribute to thinking about other possible ways of loving, outside the standards heteronormative. In other words, based on the analysis of the relationships established between the characters Nuno Galvão and Filipe Vaz, the work also aims to verify how homoerotic desire(s) arise from the clues left by Frederico Lourenço, as a possibility of expressing an immense desire within a sphere of possibility and realization.

In line with the growing demand for sustainable strategies to minimize the environmental impacts caused by plastics, natural and biodegradable polymers emerge as substitutes, albeit partially, for petrochemical polymers that are non-biodegradable. In this work, we pioneered the development of multilayer biopolymeric materials using contemporary processing techniques as continuous solvent evaporation (or continuous casting) and solution blow deposition (SBD). The work focused on multistructuring different biopolymers to promote a compatible system with their properties combined in a system containing three layers. To achieve this, bilayer films were initially produced by consecutive lamination steps of carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) as a support layer and casein layer, which exhibits good barrier properties. Additionally, a hydrophobic layer of zein was sprayed on the bilayer film to reduce the material's susceptibility to humidity. The key concept of this system is the interfacial compatibility between biopolymeric layers, which ensures a synergic relationship between the components. Incorporating tannic acid (TA) and 1,1,4,4-butanetetracarboxylic acid (BTCA) into the CMC layer, along with their respective proportions, was investigated to promote interfacial adhesion of the bilayer. The appropriate rheological aspects for the zein deposition on the bistructured films and its influence on the interaction with water were studied. The multilayer materials were extensively characterized according to their generic characteristics (mechanical, barrier, thermal, morphological, and structural), and the interfacial adhesion energies were quantified using atomic force microscopy (AFM). This research showed that multilayer films are a strategy for combining proteins and polysaccharides in a material with an interface that covers its entire two-dimensional extension. Also, the study allowed for the understanding of the aspects that influence the compatibility of biopolymers and the forces responsible for interfacial interactions.

(Universidade Federal de São Carlos, 2024-08-28) Colosso, Carolina Peternela; Basso, Renato Miguel; https://lattes.cnpq.br/6984826176670527; https://orcid.org/0000-0003-2580-0365; https://lattes.cnpq.br/6468140086178773; https://orcid.org/0009-0006-5511-5624
The aim of this research is to analyze the semantic components of the concept of lying in contemporary Brazilian Portuguese (BP), and to defend a definition of this concept based on the idea of prototypes. To this end, we applied the questionnaire on the semantic features that make up lies proposed by Coleman & Kay (1981) to speakers of BP. The anonymous response to this questionnaire, whose subjects are adult native speakers of BP, will lead to a characterization of the prototype of lying in BP. Once we have this characterization, we compare the data obtained by applying this questionnaire to English speakers, looking for intercultural differences in lying, as well as analysing the implications of the results obtained for BP with philosophical descriptions of lying, which, in general, do not take empirical data for their discussion. Thus, this research contributes not only to the description of the concept of lying in BP, but also to the beginning of a translinguistic evaluation of this concept and its implications in the philosophical debate. Finally, we would like to highlight the originality of this research, given that there is practically no work on the subject in BP linguistics.

This research examines the connection between basic education and higher education in Brazil, focusing on the initial teacher training courses at the higher education level, specifically in Physics and Chemistry. These areas were identified in various studies and surveys conducted between 2004 and 2015 as having a significant shortage of teachers for high school education. The general objective of the thesis was to analyze educational indicators from both high school and higher education, with an emphasis on undergraduate programs in Physics and Chemistry, in Brazil and at a specific federal public institution, during the period from 2014 to 2019. The analysis aimed to identify trends, statistical regularities, and inflection points, considering the impact of the regulatory framework that adjusted the National Education Guidelines and Framework Law (LDBEN) in line with Constitutional Amendment N° 59/2009, which expanded compulsory and free basic education; it also considered being a moment after the dissemination of some forecasts and diagnoses about the shortage of teachers for high school in the country; and it coincides with a series of policies and programs in progress in higher education, coordinated by the so-called “New CAPES,” aimed at promoting teacher training for basic education. The research was based on interpretative concepts of Brazil and its education by Florestan Fernandes, such as dependent capitalism, cultural heteronomy, and multifunctional and integrated university. The methodology adopted included bibliographic and documentary research, using descriptive analysis, with the Basic Education Census and the Higher Education Census as the main sources. The results revealed concerning dropout rates in teacher training programs and in the teaching profession in basic education, both at the national level and at a specific federal public institution. It is concluded that the absence of a national development project has significant effects on educational policies.

Air pollution is one of the main environmental and public health challenges, with Particulate Matter (PM2.5) being one of the most critical pollutants due to its adverse impacts. This study investigated the modeling of PM2.5 concentrations in Brazil, considering regional specificities, aiming to improve Life Cycle Impact Assessment (LCIA). Different pollutant dispersion models were mapped, and the InMAP model was selected to simulate PM2.5 concentrations. The evaluated inventories covered five key sectors: agriculture, industry, transportation, biomass burning, and biogenic emissions. For the agricultural sector, the EDGAR inventory was used; in the industrial sector, the EDGAR, BRAIN, and Rey (2023) inventories were considered; and for the transportation sector, the EDGAR and BRAVES inventories were used. Biomass burning was represented by the FINN inventory, while biogenic emissions were represented by the MEGAN inventory. From these sources, six datasets (C_01 to C_06) were formulated and applied in the InMAP model, subsequently validated using the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) against monitored concentration data from 31 stations in the state of São Paulo. The analysis revealed a significant lack of specific data in key sectors, such as agribusiness, highlighting the urgent need to develop more detailed emission inventories in Brazil. The BRAVES inventory stood out for its superior representativeness, being used in the three best-performing combinations of inventories, suggesting its suitability for the Brazilian context. The southern and southeastern regions of Brazil, especially urban areas such as the São Paulo metropolitan area, showed the highest PM2.5 concentrations, reflecting the strong influence of transportation and industrial emissions. Among the six evaluated inventory sets, C_03 was identified as the most robust. This set combined data from EDGAR for agriculture and industry, BRAVES for transportation, FINN for biomass burning, and MEGAN for biogenic emissions, presenting the lowest RMSE and the greatest consistency among the inventories used. The study emphasized the importance of uniformity in data collection to increase the accuracy of simulations, indicating that the adoption of data collection standards is essential to improving the modeling of emission inventories in Brazil.
