Grinding is a high-value-added machining process responsible for providing surface finish and ensuring adequate surface integrity. To achieve low surface roughness, high cutting speeds are commonly used, which are linked to the generation of high thermal loads. These thermal loads, originating from the heating during the grinding process, are quite problematic as they generate tensile residual stresses, in addition to facilitating the creation of cracks and, in more extreme cases, material burning. In this work, a thermal model was developed using the finite element method to evaluate the temperature fields throughout the grinding process of a cemented carbide insert for two critical scenarios involving the chip thickness per grain. The study demonstrated that, at all points of the insert, there was heating, with the lowest temperatures concentrated in the areas farthest from the ground face and the highest temperatures close to the ground face and the bottom face. In addition, the maximum temperature was not uniformly distributed on the ground face, presenting significant variations. Temperatures were recorded that exceeded the critical limit for energy partition greater than 20% in grinding with minimum chip thickness per grain and greater than 30% in grinding with maximum chip thickness per grain. Finally, it was observed that the temperature evolution follows a logarithmic behavior due to the variation of the thermal properties of the cemented carbide.

(Universidade Federal de São Carlos, 2024-09-20) Matias, Andreza dos Ramos; Vieira, Ludmilla Maria Souza Matos de Araújo; Sato, Tatiana de Oliveira; https://lattes.cnpq.br/3456494998257229; https://orcid.org/0000-0001-8797-8981
Health professionals provide health services under working conditions that often involve risks, including biomechanical and psychosocial risks. Furthermore, depression and obesity are two worrying factors among these workers. Objective: To identify whether obesity is associated with symptoms of depression in healthcare professionals through a longitudinal study. Methods: This is a longitudinal study with healthcare workers from the Unified Health System. Data were obtained through a sociodemographic questionnaire containing personal and occupational data, including weight and height. Participants also completed the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) to assess symptoms of depression. Participants were assessed quarterly for one year, totaling five assessments. Data were analyzed using logistic regression analysis. Results: The proportion of workers with symptoms of depression was higher in the obese group at all times evaluated. Conclusions: Obesity was associated with symptoms of depression in healthcare professionals at all follow-up times over 12 months. These findings indicate that obesity control and management measures may be useful for people with depression.

Turbochargers were developed with the aim of enhancing combustion engines, enabling small displacement engines to produce power comparable to larger engines. The turbocharger works by reusing exhaust gases to turn a rotor connected to turbine blades that draw air into the engine. By increasing the mass flow of air admitted to the engine, to match the increased fuel flow, it is possible to boost power without internal modifications to the engine itself. The turbocharger market has been growing considerably, particularly due to the concept of downsizing, which has been extensively studied in recent years. The region where turbochargers are least used is South America, with Brazil representing the largest portion of this market. This contradicts a characteristic of the country—ethanol-fueled vehicles. Ethanol has a higher octane rating than gasoline, which allows for higher compression pressures without detonation. Therefore, the association between ethanol and a turbocharging system is particularly suitable for vehicles. This work presents a clear methodology for selecting the ideal turbocharger for specific applications. It also proposes a model to demonstrate that small engines can achieve power comparable to, or even exceeding, that of larger engines—if properly sized and matched with the right compressor.

With the advancement of technology and the increasing volume of personal data being collected, stored, and processed, it has become essential to establish clear and stringent guidelines to ensure the protection of individuals' fundamental rights regarding their personal data. The General Data Protection Law (LGPD) is a significant piece of legislation aimed at safeguarding the privacy and security of personal data. In this context, it is observed that, several years after the law's enactment, Federal Higher Education Institutions (IFES) still face challenges in implementing the law. Among the primary barriers are organizational culture, a shortage of qualified professionals, and the lack of a structured process for compliance with the law's requirements. In response, the Digital Government Secretariat (SGD) of the Federal Government of Brazil developed a framework to assist Federal Public Administration (APF) entities in adapting to the LGPD. However, there remains a need to enhance this process. Thus, based on the framework proposed by the SGD, the objective of this dissertation is to contribute to the improvement of the law's application by proposing a macro-process to assist IFES managers in complying with the LGPD. This proposal was developed through an extensive literature review of documentary analysis available in secondary sources, and subsequently validated in the case of the Federal University of Mato Grosso (UFMT). The motivation for this project lies in adapting the framework proposed by the Digital Government Secretariat to the realities of a Federal Higher Education Institution, considering its specificities and culture. Therefore, this dissertation also aims to contribute to other higher education institutions by extending the results obtained from the UFMT experiment, providing IFES with guidance on achieving compliance with the LGPD.

This article aims to present a brief bibliographic review of academic productions that address the theme of sexuality in the context of deafness. The paper, characterized as a bibliographic review and supported by the work of Guimarães and Silva (2020), intends to search for works published in 2022 using the same descriptors used by these authors: Sexuality, Deafness, Hearing Impaired, Sexual Education, Sexual Health. The work of Guimarães and Silva (2020) was chosen because it is a systematic review of works addressing the topic up to the year 2020. In this study, our time frame was selected because it represents a post-pandemic period in which, apparently, there was a significant increase in accessible content in Brazilian Sign Language for deaf people, leading us to assume that the topic might also have been more addressed in research during this period. Therefore, the research aims to present recent literature that reflects on how issues related to sexual education and deafness have been addressed by academic works. Considering that the deaf community has more restricted access to the debate related to sexuality (due to their linguistic difference), we point out with the conducted survey that, although a lot of content in Brazilian Sign Language has circulated in videos and social networks after the pandemic, for example, no increase in academic productions on this topic was observed. This suggests that the field of sexuality and sexual education still needs to be further explored (including in Brazilian Sign Language) for deaf people in the country.

The increase in global competitiveness in the sugar and ethanol industry poses challenges to companies in the sector, requiring modernization and precise control of industrial processes in sugar manufacturing. Automation and the use of artificial intelligence allow the integration of analysis and control of process variables. In this context, computer vision has proven to be a tool to assist procedures. With the use of machine learning algorithms, visual classifications can be performed automatically. This work addresses the application of the k-nearest neighbors algorithm to classify supersaturation zones from images of sugar crystals. The automation of this task contributes to quality control and the reduction of human error, promoting advancement in this sector of great economic and social importance. The methodology used image processing techniques, such as histogram equalization and median filter. Edge detection methods and morphological operations were applied to highlight attributes. The extracted features were applied to the k-nearest neighbors algorithm, which was trained and validated with cross-validation and different k values. The model achieved a maximum accuracy of 83.1% with a k value of 5, showing good performance in distinguishing the different crystallization zones. Despite this, there was overlapping of samples in the border regions of the classes, which suggests the need for new approaches to separate the zones.

Introduction: Dysmenorrhea is defined as menstrual pain of uterine origin and can often cause functional disability and lead to absenteeism from school and work. Assessment of a person with dysmenorrhea can be done using Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs), which are patient-administered measures/questionnaires. Although PROMs exist to assess different aspects of the health of women with dysmenorrhea, it is not known which PROM(s) can be recommended for use according to their measurement properties (validity, reliability, and responsiveness). Furthermore, no PROM has been adapted for Brazil to assess the interference of dysmenorrhea on women’s physical, social and mental activities, and no PROM has been developed to assess functioning and presenteeism related to dysmenorrhea in people (cis and transgender) with dysmenorrhea. Therefore, this thesis has the following objectives divided into four research studies: 1) identify and critically evaluate the available evidence on the measurement properties of PROMs used for dysmenorrhea; 2) translate and evaluate the measurement properties of the Dysmenorrhea Symptom Interference (DSI) scale into Brazilian Portuguese (DSI-BrPt) with women with dysmenorrhea; 3) develop and evaluate the measurement properties of the Dysmenorrhea-related Impact on Functioning Scale (DIFS) to assess the impact of dysmenorrhea on functioning in cis and transgender individuals; and 4) develop and evaluate the measurement properties of the Dysmenorrhea-related Presenteeism Scale (DPS) to assess the impact of dysmenorrhea on work and/or study productivity in cis and transgender individuals. Methods: Search 1 is a systematic review of measurement properties that included original studies, without restrictions on language and publication date, that reported one or more measurement properties of PROMs for dysmenorrhea. All phases of the study followed the recommendations of the COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement Instruments (COSMIN). Research studies 2, 3, and 4 were conducted online, but only research study 2 included cisgender Brazilian women with dysmenorrhea. Research studies 3 and 4 included people with dysmenorrhea (cis and transgender) for the development of DIFS and DPS based on the existing PROMs for dysmenorrhea, functioning and presenteeism, and the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) for DIFS. For research studies 2, 3 and 4, the following measurement properties were evaluated according to COSMIN: content validity, structural validity, internal consistency, measurement invariance, test-retest reliability, measurement errors and hypothesis testing for validity of construct. The PROMs score and cutoff were developed using Item Response Theory. Results: In research study 1, 30 studies and 19 PROMs were reviewed. The instruments varied in terms of the construct measured and the measurement properties. The methodological quality of the studies and the quality of the PROMs were variable, but only the DSI can be recommended for use. In research study 2, the DSI-BrPt showed sufficient measurement properties in a sample of 1,387 women with dysmenorrhea. This PROM has 8 items with a single-factor structure and its total score was classified as “no interference” (1 point), “mild interference” (1.01 to 2.50 points), “moderate interference” (2.51 to 3.50 points), and “severe interference” (3.51 to 5 points). For research studies 3 and 4, the DIFS and DPS demonstrated sufficient measurement properties in a sample of 3,335 people with dysmenorrhea (cis and transgender). The DIFS has a bi-factor structure with 15 items divided into the factors “Bodily Functions” and “Daily Activities and Social Participation”, with “Functioning” as the general factor. The DPS has a single-factor structure of 9 items, and the cut-off point to classify the person with a significant impact of dysmenorrhea on work and/or study productivity was 38 points. Conclusions: The DSI was the only PROM identified in research study 1 that has the potential to be recommended due to its sufficient rating combined with moderate quality of evidence for content validity. In Study 2, the DSI-BrPt was found to be valid and reliable for assessing the impact of dysmenorrhea on the physical, social and mental activities of Brazilian women. In research studies 3 and 4, the DIFS and DPS demonstrated sufficient measurement properties to assess the impact of dysmenorrhea on functioning and work productivity, respectively, and to study cis and transgender people with dysmenorrhea.

Nitrones and β-lactams are important classes of compounds due to their great relevance to the synthetic and medicinal organic chemistry community. Nitrones are 1,3-dipoles widely used in cycloaddition reactions for the synthesis of natural products (including β-lactams) and heterocycles, as well as electrophilic partners in addition reactions. β-lactams, in addition to their recognized antibacterial activity, also have other biological activities, and can be used as advanced synthons in the production of other valuable compounds such as β amino acids and peptides. In recent years, our research group has been working, among other topics, with the functionalization of compounds via photochemical route, from the addition of carbamoyl or alkyl radicals. In this sense, we envision the possibility of exploring the addition of radicals to nitrones and using them as starting materials for the preparation of electrophilic β-lactams to be subjected to photochemical functionalization. In the first work, a large structural diversity of nitrones were functionalized from the addition of carbamoyl radicals, originating from the oxidation of the radical precursor 4-carbamoyl 1,4-dihydropyridines using the photocatalyst 1,2,3,5-tetrakis(carbazol-9-yl)-4,6-dicyanobenzene (4CzIPN), under continuous flow regime. It was possible to obtain 49 examples of α-(N-hydroxy)amino amides, a nucleus present in several bioactive compounds, with yields of 26 to 95% and diastereoisomeric ratios (rd) of 1:1 to 20:1, from the formation of a C(sp2)-C(sp3) bond. It is worth mentioning that the batch reaction lasted 15 h and under continuous flow regime it was completed in only 30 min. In the second work, the N-phenyl 3 exo-methylene β-glycosyl β-lactam nucleus, synthesized from a variant of the Kinugasa reaction, using N-phenyl α-glycosyl nitrones and propargyl alcohol, was functionalized from the addition of alkyl radicals generated via photoinduction of EDA complex between Hantzsch ester (HE) and N-(acyloxy)phthalimides. It was possible to obtain 19 examples with yield of 37 to 66% and excellent cis/trans rd, mostly 20:1, in only 2 h of reaction providing the expansion of the chemical space of this important class of heterocycle, from the formation of a diastereoselective C(sp3)-C(sp3) bond. The absolute cis configuration of the functionalized β-lactam nucleus was unequivocally determined from the X-ray diffraction analysis of a single crystal. It was possible to obtain evidence that one of the pathways involved in the formation of the stereogenic center at C3 occurs via diastereoselective hydrogen atom transfer, probably by HE. This could be observed from the high-resolution mass spectrometry analysis, where it was possible to determine the mass of the radical-radical coupling product between the radical intermediate and TEMPO. In short, it was possible to synthesize dozens of novel molecules using important classes of compounds as substrates from the addition of photogenerated radicals of biorelevant compounds such as amino acids, drugs, monosaccharides and other natural products under mild, scalable and fast reaction conditions.

Estudo numérico do processo de extrusão de ABS considerando diferentes geometrias do bico extrusor e condições de operação

The increasing popularity of additive manufacturing (AM) over the past decades is attributed to its lean production characteristics and the capacity to fabricate complex geometries. This growth has spurred industry efforts and investments in research to advance techniques that improve manufacturing quality, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness. This study aims to evaluate new investigative methods and approaches related to fused deposition modeling (FDM), commonly known as 3D printing, using ABS polymer as the material of choice. To assess the feasibility of extrusion simulation tools, two die geometries were considered: one with a 3 mm circular profile and another with a concave square profile inscribed within a 3 mm circle, based on the equipment available at the Mechanical Engineering Laboratory of UFSCar. For each die, combinations of temperature (80°C and 100°C) and ram speed (3 mm/s and 6 mm/s) were tested, yielding eight distinct conditions. These parameters were entered into the QformUK software to analyze its capabilities and limitations in simulating the polymer extrusion process. The results revealed that the Hensel-Spittel constitutive model is inadequate for accurately describing the rheological behavior of polymers, as the simulations did not replicate the experimentally observed geometries with precision. This shortfall is primarily attributed to the oversimplifications made when adapting constitutive models for metals to polymeric materials. Specifically, the Hensel-Spittel model proved insufficient in capturing the non-Newtonian behavior characteristic of polymers. Consequently, the simulations failed to account for advanced viscous effects, limiting the software’s ability to faithfully represent the polymer extrusion process. Future research should explore the use of more suitable tools, such as the development of specialized subroutines, to more accurately model polymer materials in QformUK.

The present study investigated how environmental variations modulate the composition and functional diversity of the ichthyofauna in a shallow coastal ecosystem within the influence area of the Port of Imbituba, adjacent to the Southern Right Whale Environmental Protection Area (APABF) in southern Brazil. Based on a nearly decade-long time series (2015–2024), abiotic variables such as sea surface temperature, salinity, turbidity, and dissolved oxygen were analyzed through the lens of community assembly theory. The results showed that seasonality and interannual oscillations play central roles in structuring fish communities, with temperature and salinity acting as the main environmental filters. Turbidity, in turn, directly influenced the base of the food chain and favored generalist species. Functional diversity metrics, such as functional dispersion (FDis) and functional richness, highlighted the importance of functional diversity for community resilience in the face of environmental changes. Among the 81 recorded species, Stellifer rastrifer, Paralonchurus brasiliensis, and Isopisthus parvipinnis emerged as core species, playing critical roles in trophic networks due to their abundance and frequency of occurrence. Conversely, occasional species such as Gymnura micrura and Hypanus guttatus acted as biodiversity reservoirs under disturbance scenarios. Anthropogenic impacts, including increased turbidity caused by port sedimentation and maritime traffic, combined with climatic extremes such as marine heatwaves, posed direct threats to sensitive trophic guilds, particularly herbivores and planktivores, compromising the functional stability of the ichthyofauna. This study provides critical insights for management and conservation strategies, highlighting the need to integrate functional diversity into adaptive approaches to address increasing anthropogenic and climatic pressures. The findings reinforce the role of functional conservation in mitigating impacts and ensuring the sustainability of protected coastal marine ecosystems, such as the APABF.

This thesis specifically focuses on the study of verbal base connectors in Brazilian Portuguese, by theory of Construction Grammar and Usage-Based Models (BYBEE, 2010, 2016; GOLDBERG, 2006; LANGACKER, 2008; TRAUGOTT, TROUSDALE, 2013). Based on previous studies (CLEMENTE, 2020), this research expands the network of connectors to include new constructions, [[Vparticípio+que] ⇔ connector] and [[Vgerúndio+que] ⇔ connector], investigating the criteria for the choice of verbs and the semantic values expressed by these slots. The main objective is to expand the network of verbal base connectors in Portuguese, contributing to a broader understanding of complex constructions and connectors. The specific objectives are to identify the criteria that determine the choice of verbs in the constructions [[Vparticiple+que] ⇔ connector] and [[Vgerund+que] ⇔ connector], identify and describe the different semantic values expressed by these constructions, such as conditional, causal, concessive, adversative, additive, explanatory, and conclusive, and to perform an in-depth analysis of the verbal base connectors already recognized in the literature, as well as introduce and describe new ones, contributing to the update of the network of verbal base connectors. The analyses were conducted using real usage data collected from the Corpus do Português, with a panchronic approach (Historical and NOW corpus data). The analysis parameters included the order of the connector, the mode-temporal correlation of the verbs, the telicity of the verbs, the factuality of the verbs accompanying the base of the connectors, and the semantics of the verbs in the V slot. The results show that to fill the V slot in [[Vparticiple+que] ⇔ connector], the verbs must be factual and have mental semantic value, such as "see," or relational, such as "put" and "give," which reflect cognitive states or factual relations precisely and objectively, generally in postposed constructions with verbs in the indicative mode and telic. For [[Vgerund+que] ⇔ connector], mental and relational verbs are preferred, such as "assume" and "be," which can be factual or non- factual and used predominantly in anteposed constructions. The flexibility of gerund connectors allows for a wide range of semantic expressions, unlike participial connectors, which are more restricted and stable. The analysis demonstrates that contemporary Portuguese benefits from the innovation and adaptation of gerund connectors, while participial connectors reflect the tradition and precision of older linguistic structures. This research significantly contributes to the understanding of the evolution and use of connectors in the Portuguese language, paving the way for future investigations into their complexities and dynamics.

Environmental issues have gained prominence due to the significant and often irreversible impact of human actions on the environment. Proper solid waste management is essential to mitigate these impacts, ensuring that waste is correctly separated, reused, or recycled. The responsibility for this management is shared among manufacturers, consumers, and local waste collection and disposal management, and relies on a legal framework that regulates these processes. In the context of Environmental Education (EE), solid waste management should be addressed transversally and interdisciplinarily in schools, involving both students and the entire management team. This approach is necessary because waste management is an environmental issue influenced by local culture, economy, and values. Critical and transformative pedagogy is essential to promote changes in traditional conceptions and to seek sustainable solutions for the proper disposal of solid waste. This study analyzes articles published between 2013 and 2023 on solid waste management in schools, aiming to evaluate the effectiveness of EE practices in this context. The research adopts a qualitative approach, using theoretical frameworks from established authors in the field of EE and drawing on relevant Brazilian legislation. The analysis revealed a lack of adequate solid waste management, as well as the absence of pedagogical activities related to the topic. In light of this, an effort was made to understand how waste management in schools can be improved through a critical, transversal, and interdisciplinary Environmental Education (EE), combined with collaboration with an efficient local collection system.

The topic of deafblindness is rarely discussed and explored in the academic sphere, as it pertains to a minority community, both linguistically and socially. Deafblindness is a unique disability that combines deafness/hearing impairment and blindness/visual impairment/low vision, which can affect individuals at different stages of life. This study aimed to identify the most current topics related to deafblindness in academic research through a bibliographic review of the Capes Journal Portal. For this purpose, publications from the last five years, from 2019 to 2024, were considered current. A total of 22 articles were found, which were organized into five categories: Education, Communication, Professional Training for SC (Deafblindness) Care, Development, and Accessibility. Based on the articles found, a full reading and analysis were carried out, considering the main findings of the studies. The results indicate that the most recent research focuses on Communication and Education, emphasizing the importance of these topics for 7 development and learning. However, few studies were found on Professional Training for SC Care, Accessibility, and Development, revealing a scarcity of publications on these topics. This research allowed for the acquisition of current knowledge on the subject, highlighting the importance of encouraging new studies in the area, as well as the need for deeper discussions and reflections that aim to explore the communicative and social aspects of deafblindness.

(Universidade Federal de São Carlos, 2024-09-20) Marcello, Mateus Fernando Silva Alves; Fantini, Renata Franco Severo; https://lattes.cnpq.br/9611195121776675
This study originated from the desire to reflect on pedagogical practices that engage with children and childhood, ensuring, above all, a holistic and humanized educational process. The object of analysis is the first year of Elementary School, as the transition from Early Childhood Education to this new stage represents a significant milestone in child development. Artistic languages—along with play and ludicity—are understood as integrative elements between the world of childhood and the child’s comprehensive educational process, fostering cognitive, emotional, physical, and social development. This study is bibliographic and autobiographical in nature and aims to deepen knowledge through the examination of scholarly works on the subject. It also analyzes how official educational documents, including the National Education Guidelines and Framework Law (LDB) and the São Paulo State Curriculum, establish the presence of the Arts as a teaching and learning methodology. At the same time, it examines how the educational framework outlined by this legislation has affected the author as a child, artist, and educator. Finally, the study highlights the relevance of artistic languages as an essential methodology in the comprehensive educational process of first-grade Elementary School children. It also points to limitations related to educational policies and the lack of adequate academic training for pedagogues.

Lettuce (Lactuca sativa) is the most consumed and commercialized leafy vegetable in Brazil and worldwide, consumed mainly raw in salads, and comes in various varieties, each with its own characteristics. The genetic improvement of this crop aims to enhance its qualities for better production and yield. The objective of this study was to evaluate and compare the agronomic characteristics in the conventional system and hydroponic system (NFT) of 5 lines and varieties of butterhead lettuce (Biofort 01, F6 204 1-1-2, Regina, Janine, and Biofort 05), and 8 lines and varieties of crisphead lettuce (F6 240409 1-1-2, F5 38G 1-3, Nataly, Bolinha, Angélica, Maraisa, F7 37G 1-3-4, and F5 252G 1-1), evaluating the following attributes: fresh aerial part mass, height, diameter, number of leaves, stem length, stem diameter, leaf length, leaf width, brightness, and physiological disorder. The experiment was conducted in a randomized design with four replications and each replication with sixteen plants, with the four central plants of each replication being evaluated. For the comparison of the mean of the cultivars, the Scott-Knott test was used at 5% significance. The statistical analysis was performed using the R software, which made it possible to analyze the data and reach the results that the ideal genotype for the conventional system was F6 204 1-1-2 and F6 293 6-2-1 and for hydroponics the genotype F6 204 1-1-2 and F6 293 6-2-1 for presenting greater resistance to bolting and a good volume of leaves and fresh mass.

This work investigates the evolution of workflows and visual effects (VFX) techniques applied by Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) in the first two Star Wars trilogies, aiming to analyze the main impacts of the transformation of the film industry from the digitization of VFX processes that were previously predominantly analog. It seeks to understand how ILM is an emblematic part of establishing standards for the creative conception and production of VFX in cinema, based on the question: "How did the transition from predominantly analog practices to digital methods and tools throughout the Star Wars film franchise influence the field of VFX within Industrial Light & Magic from its foundation to the beginning of the 21st century?". Through the comparative analysis of films, public interviews in the press, behind-the-scenes materials, and specialized bibliography on the specific historical and thematic scope addressed - such as authors Thomas G. Smith, Mark Cotta Vaz, and Richard Rickitt - the study examines how ILM innovated in each title driving the development of the film industry. The research comments on ILM's work in the use of new technologies and production processes to update the execution of multiple tasks involving visual effects by overcoming practical and creative challenges and expanding the narrative and sensory possibilities of cinema. From the analysis of the evolution of VFX techniques applied in Star Wars, the work demonstrates how ILM became a reference in the field of visual effects and a key player in the transition to digital cinema.
