Resumo
Health professionals provide health services under working conditions that often involve risks, including biomechanical and psychosocial risks. Furthermore, depression and obesity are two worrying factors among these workers. Objective: To identify whether obesity is associated with symptoms of depression in healthcare professionals through a longitudinal study. Methods: This is a longitudinal study with healthcare workers from the Unified Health System. Data were obtained through a sociodemographic questionnaire containing personal and occupational data, including weight and height. Participants also completed the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) to assess symptoms of depression. Participants were assessed quarterly for one year, totaling five assessments. Data were analyzed using logistic regression analysis. Results: The proportion of workers with symptoms of depression was higher in the obese group at all times evaluated. Conclusions: Obesity was associated with symptoms of depression in healthcare professionals at all follow-up times over 12 months. These findings indicate that obesity control and management measures may be useful for people with depression.
