A dependência química e religiosas comunidades terapêuticas das cidades paulistas Araçatuba e Tatuí
(Universidade Federal de São Carlos, 2025-09-04) Vauverde, José; Souza, André Ricardo de; https://lattes.cnpq.br/7016915324466152; https://orcid.org/0000-0001-5224-3117
This research aimed to analyze the work carried out by religious therapeutic communities (TCs) located in the municipalities of Araçatuba and Tatuí, in the years 2024 to 2025. We sought to understand the relationship between the activities of these institutions and public policies aimed at treating drug addicts. Specifically, we sought to: a) understand the forms of assistance offered by the State to these institutions, whether through therapeutic protocols, the provision of professionals in the field, or medical supplements; b) sociologically analyze the conceptions of drugs and health imposed by religious therapeutic communities. To conduct this research, we analyzed national protocols on the treatment of drug addicts, as well as internal documents from two selected institutions. The objective of this monograph was to understand the system of isolation and treatment of drug addicts, in addition to investigating how the disciplines and procedures of the internal regimes of these therapeutic communities are applied. The abuse of psychoactive substances can cause serious psychological, family, and social problems. These substances include both illicit drugs—such as cocaine, heroin, and methamphetamine—and legal but equally addictive substances, such as alcohol, tobacco, and prescription medications, such as prescription drugs used to treat anxiety (anxiolytics) and sleep aids (sedatives or sleeping pills), which can cause dependence. These medications include benzodiazepines (such as diazepam and lorazepam), barbiturates, zolpidem, zopiclone, and others. Chemical dependency can affect people of all ages, genders, groups, and social classes, and the signs and symptoms vary depending on the substance and the individual. Religious doctrines offer a moral and ethical framework to help people overcome addiction, while the community can provide emotional and social support. Therapeutic communities are a form of treatment for those struggling with chemical dependency. For this, sociological reflections are of great importance.

Muscle symptoms are common and disabling complaints in Long COVID, however, their pathophysiology remains to be elucidated. Two main hypotheses have been proposed: a local and persistent viral infection or the effects of chronic systemic inflammation. To test these hypotheses, biopsies of the vastus lateralis muscle from individuals with Long COVID and healthy controls were analyzed using Western Blot, immunofluorescence and functional analyses. The results refuted the local infection hypothesis: there was no increase in Spike protein or ACE2 receptor antigens, and the pro-viral protease TMPRSS2 was decreased (p < 0.05). The immune profile was atypical, with a decrease in macrophages (p < 0.05) and no change in T lymphocytes, suggesting immune dysregulation rather than classic cellular inflammation. This dysregulation was associated with tissue remodeling, including selective atrophy of type I and IIA fibers and an unexpected decrease in collagen content (p < 0.05). Functionally, the tissue showed a profound deficit at the cellular level, with a significant reduction in single fiber strength (p < 0.05), a finding not detected in global strength tests. Taken together, these results suggest that muscle pathology in Long COVID is not caused by direct viral damage, but rather by inflammatory and immune dysregulation that leads to atrophy, matrix remodeling and contractile dysfunction at the cellular level.

Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) factors, initially applied exclusively within the business context, are beginning to be introduced into the environment of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). Accordingly, this research aimed to investigate how ESG factors are applied in leading HEIs featured in the QS Sustainability Ranking, through a comparative analysis of institutional reports from both Brazilian and international universities. A qualitative, exploratory, and descriptive research approach was adopted. The research methods included a systematic literature review and documentary analysis of institutional reports and documents found on university websites. One of the main theoretical outcomes of this study is a conceptual framework, developed from the literature review, that compiles dozens of ESG factors applicable to HEIs. Based on the documentary analysis and the proposed framework, ESG factors were investigated in national HEIs (University of São Paulo – USP; University of Campinas – Unicamp; São Paulo State University – Unesp) and international HEIs (University of Toronto; University of California, Berkeley; The University of Manchester). The findings revealed a concentration of ESG initiatives in the environmental dimension, followed by the social dimension, with governance being the least addressed. The comparative analysis showed that the six universities demonstrated a similar performance in terms of the number of ESG factors addressed. However, governance initiatives were found to be more prevalent in foreign universities. It is believed that the results of this study may yield several contributions. The identified ESG factors can support the advancement of sustainability on university campuses, foster stronger relationships between HEIs and the community, and promote teaching and research related to this theme. This study contributes to the ESG and sustainability literature by offering a theoretical framework that can inform university actions, as well as presenting various examples of initiatives already implemented by top-ranked universities in a sustainability index. It is hoped that this work will promote the importance of expanding the application of ESG factors in HEIs, in synergy with businesses, the community, and government, aiming for increasingly widespread implementation of sustainable solutions.

This dissertation analyzed the digital transformation (DT) process at the Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCar), relating it to the goals and guidelines of Brazil’s Digital Government Strategy (EGD), established by Decree No. 10.332/2020 and Law No. 14.129/2021. The main objective was to investigate how national digital government guidelines have been appropriated and operationalized in the university’s daily management, considering local specificities such as technological infrastructure, human capacities and regional context. For this purpose, the Digital Transformation Plan (PTD), the Information and Communication Technology Master Plan (PDTIC), Management Reports (2018–2024) and minutes of the Digital Governance Committee (CGD) were analyzed. A qualitative approach was adopted, based on documentary analysis and critical interpretation supported by literature on digital government, public administration and digital transformation. The results reveal advances in process digitalization, systems integration and digital services, but also highlight persistent structural challenges such as limited technical staff, budget constraints, fragmented systems and governance gaps. It is concluded that TD at UFSCar is not consolidated solely by virtue of regulations, but requires coordination between technology, financial investment, processes, organizational culture and people management. The study confirms that technology is necessary but not sufficient to generate sustainable public value, and points to ways to strengthen the role of Federal Universities in building an inclusive, secure and transparent digital government.
