    The word cosmetic has its origin in the Greek kosmetikós, which means “skilled in adorning”, that is, directly linked to the idea of beautification and body organization. On the side of the Brazilian legislation, the meaning is not far off, being intended for products whose objective is to clean, perfume, or care for the skin and hair. Nanotechnology, on the other hand, is an area that designs, manipulates, and applies materials on a nanometric scale, where atoms and molecules can be reorganized. Together, they form the so-called nanocosmetics, in which nanotechnology has been applied to cosmetics, bringing significant advances compared to traditional formulations, which has allowed greater stability of active ingredients, controlled release, and more efficient skin penetration. They are present in products such as sunscreens, anti-aging creams, and moisturizing lotions, offering better results and keeping active ingredients protected while prolonging their effects. In addition to functional advantages, it also raises concerns regarding safety, toxicity, and environmental impacts, especially when related to disposal in soil, water, and aquatic environments. Thus, there are still challenges regarding specific regulation and studies related to risks, highlighting the need for further research on the subject.

    Fashion, as a social and cultural phenomenon, evolves alongside society and holds the power to express its behaviors, values, and contradictions. In contemporary times, there is a noticeable intensification in the consumption of ephemeral trends, driven by the globalization of information, the democratization of access to fashion, and, above all, the influence of social media. Generation Z, characterized by a strong digital presence, experiences a conflict between its ethical values, such as sustainability and social responsibility, and its desire for belonging, self-expression, and consumption, which contributes to the acceleration of production and disposal cycles. This study was developed through qualitative bibliographic research and aimed to analyze the consumption of fashion trends by exploring how social media influences Generation Z’s behavior and discussing the resulting environmental, social, and economic consequences. The specific objectives included understanding the role of fashion in identity formation, characterizing the fast fashion model, investigating Generation Z’s consumption habits, analyzing the influence of social media, and discussing the impacts generated by these dynamics. The literature review revealed that negative impacts, such as the intensified exploitation of natural resources, the increase in textile waste generation, and the deterioration of working conditions, do not stem solely from individual choices, but rather from a system that encourages excessive consumption and imposes behavioral and aesthetic standards. In this context, the fast fashion logic perpetuates social inequalities and undermines sustainable economic practices, highlighting the urgency of rethinking current production models. As a final reflection, the study proposes a collaborative approach involving consumers, civil society, the productive sector, and public authorities, aiming to build a fashion model that preserves its expressive and identity-driven nature, allowing individuals to communicate through clothing without neglecting the principles of ethics, sustainability, and socio-environmental responsibility.

    Esta investigación, desarrollada en el marco del Programa Profesional de Posgrado en Educación de la Universidad Federal de São Carlos, dentro de la línea de investigación Procesos Educativos – Lenguas, Currículo y Tecnologías, centró sus reflexiones y análisis en la implementación del Modelo Dialógico de Convivencia (MDC) en el contexto escolar y el concepto de Cultura de Paz. El objetivo general de la investigación fue comprender cómo la implementación de este modelo puede influir y contribuir a la construcción de un entorno socioafectivo más ético. Profesionales de diferentes áreas de especialización participaron en esta investigación en el contexto de una Escuela Primaria Municipal en una ciudad del interior del Estado de São Paulo, que atiende a niños de educación infantil y a estudiantes de Educación para Jóvenes y Adultos (EJA). Se utilizó el método de investigación cualitativa y el enfoque comunicativo referenciados en Flecha, Gómez y Puigvert (2001). El rigor de la investigación, la producción y el análisis de datos fueron referenciados en Deslandes (1994, 2007) y Gil (2008). Esta investigación contribuyó a comprender la praxis escolar, guiada por el MDC (Comunicación y Desarrollo Modernos) y el concepto de Cultura de Paz, permitiendo así cambios en las estrategias a seguir. El Grupo Comunicativo posibilitó la evaluación del MDC durante su implementación, fortaleciendo los vínculos entre los participantes. Mediante enfoques dialógicos, comunicativos y colaborativos, se optimizó el funcionamiento del MDC según las necesidades estructurales y pedagógicas, lo que se tradujo en una mejora significativa del clima escolar y una reducción de los conflictos y la violencia. Consideramos que para mejorar la implementación del MDC es necesario capacitar a las personas involucradas, sensibilizándolas para un mayor compromiso, otro punto crucial, es que la participación de la comunidad escolar es un factor que necesita fortalecerse.

    In the normal aging process, a decline in various cognitive functions is observed, with memory being one of these functions that deserves special attention, as it is a common complaint among older people and can compromise their functional capacity and consequently their quality of life. Positive affect has been identified as a protective factor against the risk of developing mental disorders and cognitive impairment in old age. Nationally, few researchers have dedicated themselves to investigating the influence of positive and negative affects on objective and subjective memory performance among older people. Thus, the present study had the general objective of verifying the relationship between subjective memory complaints (SMQ) and objective memory performance in older people without cognitive impairment. Specifically, the influence of affect and mood on performance in memory tasks and their subjective evaluation was investigated. Forty-four individuals, aged 60 years and older, residing in the municipality of São Caetano do Sul, participated in this research. Participants were pre-evaluated to identify the presence of signs of mild cognitive impairment using the Mini-Mental State Examination. To assess objective performance on memory tasks, the subtests of the WAIS-III scale (Arithmetic, Digits Forward, Digits Backward, and Letter-Number Sequencing) were used. To capture individuals' knowledge, perceptions, and feelings about subjective memory, the Memory Complaints Questionnaire (MAC-Q) was used, and to assess mood, the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) and the Geriatric Anxiety Inventory (GAI) were used. Positive and negative affect were investigated using the Positive and Negative Affect Scale (PANAS). Data analysis did not show a significant association between subjective memory complaints and objective performance. However, memory complaints were positively related to symptoms of anxiety and depression, with anxiety being the only significant predictor. Analyzing the relationship between sociodemographic and health variables in the subjective perception of memory, three distinct participant profiles were found, with worse subjective memory assessments reported among younger participants, up to 65 years of age, and among older participants, aged 75 and over. These results highlight the moderating role of mood disorders in the subjective perception of memory in aging. Further research with a larger sample size is suggested to allow for the generalization of the data.

    The behavior of geosynthetic-reinforced soil walls under wetting conditions induced by climatic events represents a significant challenge, especially when fine-grained soils are used as backfill. This study aimed to experimentally investigate the hydro-mechanical behavior of geogrid-reinforced soil walls constructed with low-permeability residual soil and subjected to different rainfall and inundation regimes in large-scale tests. In addition, the study sought to evaluate construction elements capable of mitigating the effects of wetting. A design methodology for walls under unsaturated conditions was also proposed, accounting for the influence of rainfall events. Four physical models were constructed and tested, varying the internal drainage conditions, facing type, vertical spacing between reinforcements, and geogrid stiffness. The results indicated that, although matric suction decreased after rainfall events, a residual suction was maintained at levels sufficient to limit deformation mobilization and reduce tensile forces in the reinforcements. Evaporation during dry periods played a fundamental role in the partial recovery of suction levels. It was found that the use of sand cushions as internal drainage systems favored the redistribution of loads from the connection to the soil mass, while gabion facings although highly permeable resulted in larger displacements due to their lower stiffness. Reducing the vertical spacing between reinforcements proved to be the most effective strategy for controlling excessive displacements and deformations, even when lower-stiffness geogrids were used. Comparisons among the models showed that the smallest reinforcement spacing provided the best overall performance under rainfall and inundation, whereas models incorporating drainage elements exhibited intermediate behavior. Finally, the applicability of different tensile load prediction methods was evaluated, and the Kru method, proposed in this research, demonstrated the best agreement with the experimental results, as it incorporates unsaturated conditions and their effects on reinforcement mobilization.

    The understanding of materials used in electrochemical processes, especially those based on transition-metal oxides, requires an accurate description of electronic correlation effects. These materials present partially filled d and f orbitals and exhibit phenomena that challenge conventional electronic-structure models, such as Band Theory and the local or semilocal DFT functionals (LDA/GGA). In this work, the fundamental principles governing strongly correlated systems are investigated, including Mott insulators, charge-transfer insulators, and Peierls insulators, as well as the main theoretical models developed to describe them, such as the Hubbard model and its extensions. Next, the limitations of traditional first-principles methods in predicting electronic and energetic properties of correlated materials are discussed, highlighting the importance of improved methodologies such as DFT+U, DFT+U+V, hybrid functionals (HSE06), and DFT+DMFT. The application of these methods is illustrated through recent case studies involving cationic materials used in lithium-ion batteries, in which the inclusion of local and non-local electronic correlations proves essential for the accurate prediction of intercalation voltages, oxidation states, and structural characteristics. The discussed results show that conventional approaches tend to fail in strongly correlated systems, while advanced methods offer significantly more realistic descriptions that are consistent with experimental observations. Thus, this monograph reinforces the importance of electronic correlations in modern electrochemistry and highlights the role of advanced electronic-structure methods in the rational development of high-performance electroactive materials.

    Azospirillum brasilense, one of the most widely used species in inoculants worldwide, is a versatile rhizobacterium that enhances nitrogen availability and nutrient uptake, as well as promotes plant growth. Although the benefits of Azospirillum in agriculture are well established, its performance is often limited by the inadequacy of conventional formulations. Improving its field efficiency can be achieved through the development of formulations designed to provide robust protection against such challenges, such as those based on bacterial encapsulation in polymers. In this study, a novel powder formulation based on a poly(glycerol citrate) (PGCit) matrix, a biocompatible and sustainably synthesized polymer, was developed. The first stage consisted of standardizing a PGCit production methodology, aiming to establish synthesis conditions that optimize the balance between polymer yield and water solubility. Two molar ratios (equimolar and with excess citric acid) and reaction times ranging from 30 to 105 minutes were initially compared. Based on the structural and thermal characterization results, the material obtained under equimolar monomeric ratio and 75-minute synthesis time was selected. Formulations were produced by treating the polymer with calcium carbonate to adjust the pH and form powder. For drying the material containing trehalose and Azospirillum, three methods were tested (oven convection, freeze-drying, and spray-drying). Cell viability was assessed at time zero and up to 180 days of storage. Initially, regardless of the drying process, the formulations showed viability on the order of 10⁸ CFU/g, and the freeze-dried formulation maintained this level throughout the evaluation period, demonstrating excellent stability. Moreover, the freeze-dried formulation was tested in an Azospirillum recovery assay on maize seeds, showing superior performance compared to the liquid inoculant used as a control. In summary, the results demonstrate the protective role of the PGCit-based matrix, establishing it as a promising new carrier for seed-applied inoculants.

    This work theoretically discusses the differences between federal and local legislative elites in Brazil, focusing on the processes of formation, recruitment, permanence, and political action. Based on classical elite theories (Pareto, Mosca, and Michels) and contemporary reformulations (C. Wright Mills and Pierre Bourdieu), the research aims to understand how different forms of political, symbolic, economic, and social capital operate in structuring legislative elites in distinct contexts. The bibliographic review method, proposed by authors such as Gil (2008), Minayo (2001), and Codato (2018), is used to systematize relevant academic production on the subject. Brazilian authors such as Maria Teresa Kerbauy, Octaciano Nogueira, Bruno Speck, and César Zucco Jr. are mobilized to highlight the specificities of parliamentary action at different institutional levels. The analysis reveals distinct patterns of professionalization, recruitment, and power strategies, highlighting the implications of these differences for political representativeness and the functioning of democracy in the country.

    Agriculture 4.0 holds the potential to reduce costs, optimize resource allocation, and increase productivity through the incorporation of emerging technologies. However, many farmers still display resistance to adopting such innovations. Among them, Farm Management Information Systems (FMIS) stand out for enabling integrated management of agricultural activities, thereby contributing to operational efficiency. In this context, the present dissertation sought to identify the factors influencing farmers’ adoption of FMIS, analyzing both the perceived benefits and the barriers that hinder their implementation. Between August and November 2023, a field survey was conducted with 103 farmers. The farms were located in the macro-regions of Dourados—including the municipalities of Dourados, Maracaju, Rio Brilhante, and Aral Moreira—and Corumbá—including Bonito, Guia Lopes da Laguna, Jardim, and Nioaque. Data analysis was performed using a PROBIT regression model. The results indicated that variables such as technical support, infrastructure, and investment capacity exerted a positive and significant effect on FMIS adoption, reinforcing the importance of public policies and incentive strategies to expand their implementation. Conversely, barriers such as risk aversion and lack of trust in the technology reduced the likelihood of adoption, in line with the literature highlighting uncertainty regarding benefits and perceptions of complexity as critical obstacles. Among the individual characteristics of farmers, education level showed a positive and significant impact, whereas age exhibited no statistical relevance in the model. Furthermore, farmers’ perceptions regarding improvements in productivity and product quality were not decisive factors for FMIS adoption, suggesting that those seeking productivity gains may instead turn to other technological innovations, such as agricultural mechanization and biotechnology. The adjusted model presented robust statistical measures, demonstrating the adequacy of the factors analyzed. The findings of this research are expected to contribute to a better understanding of the challenges and opportunities in FMIS adoption, providing valuable insights for researchers, technology developers, and policymakers. Based on this knowledge, it becomes possible to design more effective strategies to enhance adoption, ensuring that FMIS are developed in alignment with the needs and realities of farmers.

    Software testing activities are essential in the software development life cycle since they help to find possible bugs before releasing the product for end users. Despite its importance, testing is still not widely applied when considering the mobile ecosystem. When testing a mobile application, it is essential to consider how to execute the tests (i.e., techniques, methods, approaches, tools, and frameworks) and where the tests run (i.e., on real devices, emulators, or in the cloud). Over the years, researchers and the industry have proposed various infrastructures to facilitate test execution. However, choosing the most suitable testing infrastructure depends on the application's scope, supported features, and the company's/user's needs. Moreover, there is still a need to explore ways to optimize testing for mobile applications.Objective: This thesis aims to provide an implementation of a solution capable of running tests on multiple devices, and these tests should validate the communication between the application and an external IoT device. Moreover, the second goal is to subsidize the testing process by providing an approach for test case generation and quality assessment. In both cases, we considered two hardware components of an Android device: Bluetooth and Location.Method: This thesis presents a different methodology comprising a collection of published and submitted work from the PhD, providing distinct contributions aligned with the defined research goals. Conclusion: During this PhD, we made solid contributions by providing means to enhance mobile application testing, focusing on the Android ecosystem. In this thesis, we presented four papers published in renowned Software Engineering journals and conferences, and one paper in the submission process. We expect that the results of this work will benefit not only the academic community but also practitioners.

    The biological fraction of atmospheric particulate matter, composed of fungi, bacteria, viruses, pollen and cell fragments, plays a relevant role in air quality, climate and human health, especially in the context of respiratory inflammation, allergies and pathogen transport. Together with chemical pollution, these bioaerosols can aggravate pre-existing diseases and act as vehicles for viable microorganisms in indoor and outdoor environments. In this context, the present work aims to review, from a historical and comparative perspective, the sampling strategies and analytical techniques applied to bioaerosols in ambient air, with emphasis on performance, limitations and reported applications. The discussion covers both passive and active samplers, including gravitational collectors, volumetric slit samplers, impactors onto culture plates, liquid-phase devices, high-flow cyclones, filters, cascade impactors and personal samplers, highlighting aspects such as preservation of viability, sampled size range and temporal resolution. On the analytical side, the review encompasses methods ranging from microscopy and conventional culture to immunological assays, the use of chemical biomarkers and modern molecular and spectrometric techniques capable of providing greater taxonomic specificity and sensitivity. The studies examined show that there is no universal method and that each combination of collection and analysis involves trade-offs between temporal resolution, microbial viability, taxonomic detail, detection limit, cost and operational practicality. Therefore, the interpretation of results must consider the study objective, the sampled matrix and the biases associated with each approach, in order to promote data comparability and a critical reading of the findings.
