    The concept of quality has been present in human relations since the first connection between artisan and client. With globalization, there was a need to increase productivity to meet the demand and competitiveness of the market and its consumers, and, for this reason, production ended up being fragmented into different sectors or companies, making the exclusively artisanal work that concentrated all processes up to the final product in a single person unviable. At this point, controlling and guaranteeing the quality of services and products is a crucial issue to meet the internal requirements of the company and especially its clients, whose satisfaction is of paramount importance to guarantee the sustainability of the business. The objective of this work is to analyze and present the main points of the structure of a quality management system (QMS) focusing on its applicability in laboratories, comparing applicable standards in this sector, such as ABNT NBR ISO 9001, ABNT NBR ISO/IEC 17025 and GLP monitoring. Furthermore, this work presents the impacts generated by the implementation and certification of a QMS (Quality Management System) for industry and the market, and offers a perspective on how adopting a quality culture can positively influence chemistry education, introducing students to this concept that will accompany them throughout their professional careers. This work also discusses quality tools and how they can be used in the daily operations of companies for verification, measurement, analysis, and proposing solutions to problems or failures. It concludes that the application of a QMS is of great importance to the chemical industries in the Brazilian and global markets, leading the organization to a new level of credibility and competitive advantage by standardizing processes, reducing costs, and increasing customer satisfaction, thus ensuring the sustainability of the business.

    The growing demand for food, driven by population growth, has required modern agriculture to achieve higher levels of productivity. Fertilizers play a fundamental role in this context; however, conventional products exhibit low agronomic efficiency, with significant nutrient losses due to volatilization, leaching, and fixation in the soil. In response to these challenges, nanotechnology has emerged as a promising strategy for developing controlled-release fertilizers capable of synchronizing nutrient availability with plant demand. Among the various nanotechnological approaches, two complementary strategies have attracted particular attention: the production of extruded urea–montmorillonite nanocomposites and the development of thin polyurethane coatings incorporating lamellar materials for urea granules. Among these lamellar materials, montmorillonite exhibits a high cation exchange capacity, effectively retaining ammonium ions and reducing ammonia volatilization, whereas hydrotalcite, owing to its anion exchange properties, can regulate phosphate diffusion and delay its immobilization in the soil. Extruded urea–montmorillonite nanocomposites exhibited sustained nutrient release for up to 120 hours in water, with urea intercalation between the clay layers confirmed by X-ray diffraction. Polyurethane coatings containing less than 5 wt.% lamellar materials effectively controlled nitrogen and phosphorus release, reducing nutrient losses through volatilization and soil fixation while achieving performance comparable to or better than that of thicker commercial coatings. Overall, nanotechnology applied to fertilizers, particularly through the incorporation of lamellar materials into polymer matrices or extruded composites, represents a viable, cost-effective approach with significant environmental benefits for improving fertilization efficiency and mitigating the impacts associated with intensive agriculture.

    Schistosomiasis mansoni remains a relevant public health problem in Brazil, where approximately 1.5 million people live in endemic areas. Although praziquantel (PZQ) is the reference treatment and exhibits efficacy and safety, the reliance on a single anthelmintic and reports of reduced susceptibility in some contexts described in the literature reinforce the need for therapeutic alternatives. In this study, silver tungstate anchored with curcumin (AW-HRL-C) was evaluated in a murine model of experimental schistosomiasis mansoni through parasitological and immunological analyses. Parasitic load, systemic and local leukocyte profiles, plasma cytokines by CBA, and peritoneal cavity lavage cytokines by ELISA were examined. A trend toward a reduction in egg deposition and a decrease in worm recovery were observed in animals treated with AW-HRL-C compared to the infected and untreated control, in addition to changes in the leukocyte profile, which were more evident in the peritoneal environment. In plasma, only IL-10 showed consistent detection, with a reduction in the treated groups. In the peritoneal cavity lavage, the treated groups exhibited an IL-4 profile between the infected/untreated control and the uninfected control, with no significant differences for TNF-α, IL-6, IFN-γ, and IL-10. Taken together, these findings suggest that AW-HRL-C possesses antiparasitic and immunomodulatory potential in experimental schistosomiasis mansoni. However, further studies on dose-response, in vivo toxicity, histopathology, and mechanism of action are required to define its safety and efficacy at different stages of the parasite.

    Schistosomiasis mansoni is a socially determined parasitic disease caused by Schistosoma mansoni, whose morbidity is mainly associated with the granulomatous inflammatory response induced by parasite eggs retained in host tissues, particularly in the liver. Although praziquantel remains the only drug available for treatment, its limitations highlight the need to investigate new therapeutic strategies. In this context, natural products represent promising sources of bioactive compounds, including the ethanolic leaf extract of Justicia secunda, a species widely used in traditional medicine and reported to possess several biological activities. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the toxicity of the ethanolic leaf extract of J. secunda in NIH/3T3 murine fibroblasts and its effect on experimental S. mansoni infection in BALB/c mice. Cytotoxicity was assessed using the MTT assay, while nitric oxide production was determined by the Griess reaction. In the in vivo assay, forty mice were allocated into four groups: negative control, infected positive control, praziquantel-treated group, and J. secunda-treated group. Animals were infected with 80 S. mansoni cercariae, and treatments began on the 45th day post-infection. The evaluated parameters included fecal egg excretion using the Kato–Katz method, adult worm recovery by portal-hepatic and mesenteric perfusion, and liver histopathological alterations using hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) and Masson's trichrome staining. The extract exhibited low cytotoxicity at lower concentrations, whereas reduced cell metabolism and increased nitrite production were observed only at higher concentrations. In vivo, treatment with J. secunda did not significantly reduce fecal egg excretion or adult worm burden, indicating the absence of a marked anthelmintic effect at the tested dose. However, histopathological analysis suggested reduced apparent liver damage, characterized by better-defined granulomas and a more organized pattern of collagen deposition. In conclusion, the ethanolic leaf extract of J. secunda did not exhibit significant antischistosomal activity under the evaluated conditions but may have the potential to modulate liver alterations induced by S. mansoni infection. Further studies are required to quantify hepatic fibrosis, evaluate the immune response, and characterize the underlying mechanisms involved.

    Accounting for approximately 25% of all industrial processes, conventional catalytic hydrogenation relies on gaseous hydrogen, which is predominantly produced through steam methane reforming, as well as elevated temperatures and pressures. In this context, photocatalytic transfer hydrogenation emerges as a refined approach, utilizing solar energy to promote the in situ hydrogen transfer from donor molecules directly to unsaturated substrates through visible-light-active catalysts. This review provides an overview of recent advances in photocatalytic hydrogen transfer from the perspectives of both homogeneous and heterogeneous systems, highlighting the main catalyst design strategies and potential bridges between these fields. The discussion was conducted through a review of published articles between 2020 and 2026 on molecular hydrogen-free photocatalytic hydrogenation processes. The analyzed studies demonstrated that homogeneous systems excel in asymmetric catalysis, enabling fine control over enantioselectivity with complete atomic efficiency, whereas heterogeneous systems offer advantages related to stability, recyclability, high conversion rates within shorter reaction times. Among these approaches, single-atom catalysis emerges as a promising strategy for integrating high atomic efficiency, characteristic of molecular systems, with the robustness of semiconductor materials. Finally, a growing trend can be observed in both fields towards the use of water as the ideal hydrogen source, driven by its abundance, low cost, and sustainability.

    Autonomous mobile robots have been widely employed in indoor environments, such as warehouses, hospitals, laboratories, industrial facilities, and intralogistics systems. However, reliable localization of these systems remains a challenge, especially in scenarios without Global Positioning System signal availability and subject to odometric drift, repetitive geometries, inadequate lighting conditions, and uncertain sensory measurements. Although Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) approaches based on the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) are frequently used for sensor fusion, their performance may be degraded by modeling errors, local linearizations, and imperfect noise characterization. In view of these limitations, this dissertation proposes a robust multisensor framework to improve the localization of mobile robots in structured indoor environments. The approach integrates wheel odometry, observations of ArUco fiducial markers, and auxiliary pose estimates obtained from Adaptive Monte Carlo Localization (AMCL). The objective is to increase the accuracy, consistency, and robustness of pose estimation under real operating conditions, in which the nominal models of the system and sensors are subject to uncertainties. To this end, a formulation based on the Robust Kalman Filter (RKF), originally developed for discrete-time linear systems with norm-bounded parametric uncertainties, is adapted to a nonlinear EKF-SLAM structure with fiducial markers. The validation is carried out through real experiments and simulations, using a mobile robot equipped with 2D and 3D LiDAR-based sensors, an RGBD camera, and ArUco markers distributed in an indoor environment without GPS signal. The results are compared with BDUE-SLAM and conventional EKF-SLAM, considering trajectory estimation, drift reduction, and localization consistency. The results indicate that the incorporation of robust estimation strategies reduces the sensitivity of the system to model and measurement uncertainties, contributing to more reliable localization in structured indoor environments. Thus, this dissertation contributes a robust localization framework for autonomous mobile robots, preserving the recursive and computationally efficient structure of Kalman filters while extending their applicability to real-world indoor navigation scenarios.

    Cancer remains a global public health challenge, with conventional cisplatin treatment limited by systemic toxicity and frequent cellular resistance. In this context, this study consists of an exploratory narrative literature review aimed at analyzing the use of polymeric nanocarriers for the controlled release of platinum complexes in cancer treatment. By analyzing articles published between 2011 and 2026, the review describes the evolution of delivery strategies, highlighting the transition from physical entrapment to the covalent conjugation of Platinum(IV) prodrugs. The results indicate that polymeric matrices, engineered with active targeting and stimuli-responsive release triggered by the tumor microenvironment (such as acidic pH and glutathione), can bypass biological barriers and reduce premature drug leakage. It is concluded that the use of these nanocarriers shows potential to optimize antitumor efficacy and may contribute to reducing systemic toxicity in experimental models, although clinical safety for patients depends on further validation. Despite the advances in formulations, translation to the pharmaceutical market still faces hurdles regarding industrial production scale-up and compliance with regulatory requirements.

    Moradia digna e pessoa idosa: percepções socioambientais e climáticas no contexto do programa Vida Longa

    Population aging, which has intensified over recent decades, has highlighted the need for a deeper understanding of the factors influencing older adults' quality of life, particularly in light of challenges related to housing, the urban environment, and climate change. In this context, the present study aimed to analyze the relationship between socio-environmental and climatic factors, housing conditions, and the quality of life of older adults residing in the Vida Longa Program in the municipality of São Carlos, São Paulo, Brazil, considering both the home environment and the surrounding neighborhood. This cross-sectional study adopted a mixed-methods, exploratory, and descriptive design, developed through a participatory approach centered on older adults. After participants provided informed consent, instruments were administered to assess quality of life and social relationships, including the WHOQOL-BREF and the Minimum Relationship Map (MRM). Semi-structured interviews, focus groups, and participatory activities were also conducted to identify housing-related aspects, neighborhood characteristics, and socio-environmental conditions perceived by residents. As part of this process, a participatory co-diagnosis was developed, supporting the construction of a SWOT matrix to systematize the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats identified by participants. Subsequently, the matrix was validated with residents and local management. The findings revealed that quality of life is directly associated with the characteristics of the living environment. Factors such as ventilation, natural lighting, accessibility, the presence of green spaces, and thermal comfort were identified as important contributors to well-being. Conversely, structural problems, dampness, limitations related to the thermal performance of housing units, and challenges observed in the surrounding area were identified as factors that may negatively affect the aging experience. Participants also reported discomfort associated with periods of extreme heat, cold weather, and extreme climate events, highlighting the influence of neighborhood conditions on daily life and well-being. It was concluded that housing, territorial, and climatic factors directly affect the aging experience and residents' quality of life. The findings reinforce the importance of considering the needs and perceptions of this population in the planning and management of housing, urban development, and climate adaptation policies, contributing to the promotion of healthy aging in contexts of socio-environmental vulnerability.

    The pulp and paper industry generates large volumes of wastewater sludge from effluent treatment plants, the management of which represents an environmental and economic challenge for the sector. In this context, the valorization of these materials emerges as an alternative to expand resource recovery and promote practices aligned with the principles of the circular economy. This work aimed to perform a comparative evaluation of technological routes for the valorization of fibrous sludge from the pulp and paper industry, seeking to analyze the alignment of different material and energy recovery alternatives based on a real case study. The methodology consisted of an integrated literature review and a case study based on the characterization data of a biosolid generated in a pulp and paper industrial unit and reported by Zangalli (2024). The different valorization routes identified in the literature were compared using an evaluation matrix based on criteria related to sludge composition, moisture content, technological maturity, environmental compliance, logistical feasibility, and value-added potential. The results showed that the studied biosolid presents a high moisture content (75.93%), a high organic fraction (70.74%), the presence of remaining fibers, and metal concentrations compatible with current environmental legislation. The comparative analysis indicated that the recovery of degraded areas route adopted by Zangalli (2024) shows high suitability to the material's profile, especially by allowing the direct use of the sludge without the need for additional drying, favoring nutrient recycling, and meeting applicable environmental requirements. Additionally, it was found that the high organic fraction and the presence of fibers provide potential for applications associated with the biorefinery concept, including the production of biofuels, bioproducts, and materials derived from cellulosic fibers. In contrast, thermochemical routes presented limitations mainly associated with the high moisture content of the biosolid. It is concluded that the recovery of degraded areas route constitutes a technically compatible alternative with the sludge characteristics and the operational reality of the analyzed unit. However, the results also demonstrate that the biosolid has potential for other higher value-added valorization strategies, which demand complementary studies of technical, economic, and environmental feasibility for their future implementation.

    Carbon dioxide (CO₂) is one of the main gases responsible for the greenhouse effect and climate change. Although it is one of the major contributors to global warming, CO₂ can also be used as an abundant and renewable feedstock for the production of higher-value compounds, however, its high chemical stability makes this use challenging. The use of microwave irradiation in organic reactions has emerged as a practical and efficient alternative, since reactions often proceed faster, more selectively, and with lower energy consumption. Thus, this work presents a literature review on advances in the application of microwaves to the chemical fixation of CO₂, focusing on the production of cyclic carbonates, ureas, carbamates, and related derivatives. In addition, the main catalytic systems, the role of the dielectric properties of the reaction medium, and the operational limitations of this technology are discussed, although challenges related to scale-up, selectivity, and industrial feasibility still remain.

    This paper presents an introduction and application of survival analysis, aiming to study dengue cases primarily through modeling the time until the occurrence (and possible recurrence) of infections. It begins with a study of non-parametric descriptions and adopts the semi-parametric Cox model as a basis for estimation, discussing its proportionality and risk assumptions. Subsequently, extensions of the Cox models for recurrent events are presented, including Andersen-Gill, Prentice-Williams-Peterson, and Wei-Lin-Weissfeld models. Following this, two examples are presented: (i) a clinical database of recurrent renal failures and (ii) data on rehospitalization after colorectal cancer surgery, in which the Andersen-Gill model is fitted.

    The single-cell analysis has gained prominence in the last few years, propelled by technological advances that made RNA sequencing more accessible and reduced information loss. Initially, due to technical limitations, sequencing was performed in bulk: RNA was extracted from a sample composed of multiple cells, resulting in an average gene expression profile. This method allowed comparisons between healthy and diseased tissues, or between different experimental conditions, based on average gene expression. However, this approach didn’t capture the cellular heterogeneity within the same tissue. With the advent of single-cell RNA sequencing, it became possible to analyze each cell of the sample individually, enabling the identification of cell subpopulations and characterization of subtle variations among cells from the same region, something specially relevant in tissues with high cellular diversity, like the brain. Despite its advantages, single-cells data presents specific challenges, such as high levels of noise, a large proportion of zeros (sparsity) and high dimensionality, since each cell is described by thousands of genes. In this study, normalization techniques were explored to process the data and reduce the impact of technical effects, as well as biclustering methods to simultaneously group cell with similar profiles and the most expressive genes in each group. To this end, a gene expression dataset composed of 18,928 genes and 734 cells derived from the human fetal brain and cerebral organoids obtained at different developmental stages was analyzed. The normalization was able to reduce the effects of technical variation by detecting relevant genes with low expression levels, while biclustering enabled the simultaneous identification of groups of cells with similar expression profiles and the most representative genes within each group. The results indicated that more mature organoids exhibit greater similarity to fetal cells, although they still do not fully reproduce all the characteristics of the human fetal brain.

    Child physical rehabilitation has undergone significant transformations, reflecting conceptual shifts from the normalization of bodily functions toward the promotion of participation, engagement, and meaning in everyday occupations. Within this context, the Theory of Occupational Nature, developed by Ann A. Wilcock, although widely discussed in studies involving adults, still lacks investigations applied to childhood. This doctoral thesis aimed to identify and analyze the presence of elements of occupational dimensions in occupational therapy practices within pediatric physical rehabilitation, as described in recent scientific literature. The research was structured into two complementary studies. Study I consisted of an integrative literature review conducted in PubMed, Scopus, SciELO, and BVS, using the PICo mnemonic and following PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Articles published between 2022 and 2026, in Portuguese or English, open access, and describing occupational therapy practices with children aged 0 to 12 years with physical disabilities were included. The search resulted in 18 studies, analyzed regarding methodological characteristics, populations served, interventions, and contexts. Findings revealed a predominance of multidisciplinary interventions, extensive use of assistive technologies, family-centered approaches, incorporation of natural environments, and a strong focus on occupational participation and performance. Study II involved an in-depth analysis of 15 articles selected from a second literature review on pediatric rehabilitation, derived from Study I, aiming to identify evidence of the four dimensions of the theory—doing, being, becoming, and belonging—within the described practices. The interpretative analysis, grounded in Wilcock’s original definitions and in studies that operationalize these dimensions, demonstrated that these principles are consistently present, even when not explicitly named. The occupational therapy practices described in the articles highlighted doing as meaningful and transformative action; being as identity construction and self-efficacy; becoming as a process of development and change; and belonging as social, community, and family participation. The thesis concludes that the principles of the Theory of Occupational Nature permeate contemporary occupational therapy practices in pediatric physical rehabilitation, even when not explicitly adopted as a theoretical framework. The theory offers a powerful lens for understanding the child as a full occupational being, whose experiences of doing, being, becoming, and belonging support health, development, and participation. The thesis reinforces the need to expand empirical research that directly observes clinical practice, as well as studies exploring professional training and the explicit incorporation of the theory in childhood-focused contexts.

    This thesis analyzes how access to, retention in, and the mediation of affirmative action policies contribute to processes of social mobility among quilombola graduates of the Federal University of Recôncavo da Bahia (UFRB). The methodological approach of the study was grounded in qualitative research, conducted through narrative interviews, bibliographic analysis, and a literature review. Theoretically, the thesis adopts the categories of race, ethnicity, quilombo, class, higher education, retention, and affirmative action as key analytical dimensions for structuring and grounding the research, seeking to understand how these categories intersect and how they are associated with processes of material and symbolic mobility among quilombola graduates. To this end, the theoretical framework draws on the contributions of Hasenbalg (1979) and Valle Silva (1999) to conceptualize mobility from an ethnic-racial perspective; Fernandes (1988) to engage with the categories of race and class; Quijano (2005), whose work grounds the decolonial perspective on society; Pitirim Sorokin (1968), Pastore (1979), and Scalon (1999), who contribute to the conceptualization of social mobility; and Munanga (2004), Guimarães (2009), Nascimento (1980), and Arruti (2008), whose works inform the analysis of ethnicity, race, quilombo, and quilombismo. The findings demonstrate that processes of mobility do not occur in a predetermined or immediate manner; rather, they are conditioned by social structures historically constructed along ethnic-racial lines. Nevertheless, the study finds that quilombola access to higher education, specifically at UFRB, when combined with retention and mediated by affirmative action policies, significantly contributes to disrupting historical cycles of social exclusion, economic vulnerability, exploitation, and labor precarization affecting this social group. The findings indicate that access to higher education and academic training result in improved material and objective conditions of social life, expanded opportunities in the labor market, increased income, and, consequently, greater capacity for consumption and access to goods and services. At the same time, the study demonstrates that access to UFRB has contributed to symbolic forms of mobility by reinforcing and strengthening quilombola identities and promoting social recognition, changes in social status, recognition as community leaders, and legitimation as intellectual references. It is therefore concluded that access to UFRB, mediated by retention and affirmative action policies, has contributed to two dimensions of social mobility: symbolic mobility, situated at the social level and characterized by social and collective representations, political emancipation, social valorization, and ethnic-racial belonging; and material mobility, situated primarily at the individual level and characterized by expanded consumption, greater access to goods and services, and improved material living conditions. The study also observes that, although these two dimensions of mobility constitute important mechanisms for mitigating social and racial inequalities and destabilizing a society structured along racial caste lines, the thesis demonstrates that mobility alone is insufficient to eliminate or break with the mechanisms and means of oppression and exploitation inherent in capitalism.
