Resumo

With the water crisis predicted for the coming years and the uncertain future of water availability for the population and industries, the reuse and reduction of water waste have become a matter of utmost priority. Industries across various sectors seek to optimize pre-treatment and intermediate treatment processes for water used in systems, associating the total operating cost with the cost attributed to water, based on real risks of water scarcity. Contaminants in water sources are related to various geological, biological, and anthropogenic factors, necessitating an understanding of the different types of contaminants present in water sources for purposes such as drinking water and industrial applications. In terms of water reuse in industrial equipment, chemical treatment is necessary to avoid typical problems such as scaling, corrosion, and microbiological growth. These issues lead to a reduction in the lifespan of equipment, loss of efficiency, increased energy consumption, and consequently, a significant rise in operating costs and unplanned expenses. This paper will present a literature review on the control of microbiological growth with biocides in industrial cooling systems. An overview will be provided on the main alternatives among oxidizing and non-oxidizing biocides, their mechanisms of action for microbiological control, and the advantages and disadvantages of their use in specific situations.
