This dissertation aims to describe the settings and practices of political parties at Monsanto, an interior municipality of Pernambuco, from an intensive field research conducted in February, March and April 2010. The political activity in this city, far from operating only the possibilities of action offered by political parties, takes place also in the particular arrangements of two collectivities - political group and family. I will seek to describe how political parties are central to the political constitution of this city, by offering mechanisms and logics without all the political calculus of my research interlocutors would not take place. My purpose in this sense will be to describe how each of the parts that compose the local politics does not relate only to the opposition and exclusion on the other, but through acts of composition, presupposition and mutual political actualization. At the same time, I try to point how the political involvement in Monsanto is not a product of ignorance or inexistence of modern practices of democracy, which, in contrast, are equated within their political logics.
