Resumo
This work presents a critical reflection on the journey of medical education, based on the author's personal experience. It aims to highlight the contrast between the initial idealizations of the medical profession and the practical realities of clinical work. Throughout the course, the student is faced with the daily routine of medical practice, which proves to be far from the collective imagination of heroism and social prestige. Medicine is understood as a continuous, demanding, technical, and human-centered activity that requires constant learning, emotional balance, empathy, and adaptability. The importance of understanding the patient as a unique individual is emphasized, recognizing that the experience of illness goes beyond pathophysiology and includes social, emotional, and contextual aspects. The text addresses the vulnerability of the Brazilian healthcare system, social inequalities, and the social determinants of the health-disease process. The academic experience during this period allowed the author to observe how factors such as housing, income, and access to information directly impact illness and healthcare. The persistent lack of health education is also discussed as a major challenge, making it difficult to promote healthy habits and patient autonomy. The role of the physician is highlighted as that of a guide, caregiver, and agent of change, even in the face of resistance. Extracurricular experiences in basic research and data analysis contributed to the author’s critical and scientific development, reinforcing the understanding of medicine as a technical, social, and investigative field. It is concluded that medical practice must be grounded in listening, science, and ethical responsibility, as a daily task of action, reflection, and constant improvement.
