Resumo
According to Grand View Research, global sales of cooktops are expected to grow by more than 8.5% by 2028, driven by consumers increasingly seeking space-saving solutions for their homes. Consequently, companies in the home appliance sector, known as the white goods industry, have been investing more and more in this type of product. Most of these companies are multinational, and therefore the importation of products between continents is quite common; in order to reduce costs, maritime transport is the most widely adopted option. Due to the different environmental conditions in each country and the fact that maritime transport exposes products to extremely harsh climatic conditions, such as high temperatures and high humidity levels, many components suffer physicochemical degradation during transportation. In this work, two components were identified as being damaged during transport: a steel ANSI 403 part that showed oxidation in the regions subjected to the laser marking process, and an injection-molded and painted plastic part that exhibited blistering and peeling. The root cause of both problems was identified as the extreme humidity during maritime transport, which came into contact with the products due to small holes in the packaging. As a solution, after applying a Pugh matrix, the replacement of ANSI 403 steel with ANSI 304 steel and the adoption of a new packaging design were approved, in which a non-perforated plastic layer is added around the product to prevent moisture ingress. The project proved to be effective in solving the problems and also met the financial requirements, and was therefore implemented by the company.
