Resumo

This research project aimed to investigate the relationship between compulsive shopping, emotional intelligence (specifically emotional understanding and emotional regulation), and personality, focusing on the Brazilian population. Approximately 414 individuals over 18 years of age who regularly made online purchases participated. To assess emotional understanding, emotional regulation, personality, and compulsive shopping habits of each participant, respectively, the TOHE and QoRE questionnaires, the BFI-2 scale, and the Richmond Achievement Scale were used. The research sought to contribute to the advancement of psychological science by examining the levels of emotional understanding and emotional regulation of participants who engage in different intensities of online shopping, as well as helping to establish diagnostic criteria related to the phenomenon. The study is justified by the significant prevalence of compulsive shopping in society and the importance of identifying risk factors for the development of this behavior, which can have negative financial and emotional consequences. The results indicated that compulsive online shopping is positively associated with impulsivity and negatively associated with resilience and sociability. Additionally, a positive relationship was observed between online shopping addiction and neuroticism, and a negative relationship with conscientiousness and agreeableness. Regression analysis revealed that age, sex, and income were significant predictors of online shopping addiction, with young women of high income showing a higher risk. These results contribute to the understanding of online shopping addiction and may assist in the development of targeted interventions for the prevention and treatment of the problem.
