The Cerrado is considered a biome of high biodiversity, covering approximately 23% of Brazil's territory. It holds significant historical, ecological, cultural, and economic importance for the country while facing major challenges related to native vegetation loss and the expansion of the agricultural frontier. This study aims to assess the Cerrado biome based on the Forest Transition Theory (FTT), a theoretical model that evaluates changes in forest cover over time, considering economic, social, and environmental factors. This research utilizes data from the MapBiomas project, which compiles land use information from 1985 to 2023, along with relevant studies to identify the biome's forest transition phase and explore the direct and indirect factors influencing land use and the various mechanisms of forest transition. The results indicate that most of the Cerrado is in an intermediate stage of forest transition, characterized by persistent large-scale deforestation and native vegetation fragmentation. The assessment highlights the relevance of factors such as the expansion of agribusiness, global demand for commodities, especially soy and beef, and the relative lack of studies and funding dedicated to the biome. Additionally, the study discusses the hidden losses associated with both anthropogenic and natural reforestation, emphasizing the importance of strategies that reconcile forest recovery with the protection of remaining areas. The monograph concludes that the environmental conservation of the Cerrado requires the implementation of integrated public policies that incorporate FTT mechanisms, such as economic incentives and environmental governance, as well as the participation of local communities. It also underscores the need for sustainable management actions and global initiatives to reduce pressures on the biome, ensuring its preservation and the maintenance of its ecosystem services. This study contributes to the understanding of land-use dynamics in the Cerrado and provides insights for future research and policy-making aimed at the biome's sustainability.

Test procedures on the ground are essential during the aircraft development process. Considering the costs and complexity of these tests, the use of modeling and simulation tools is beneficial, particularly for systems like the antiskid system, which requires validation under diverse scenarios the aircraft may encounter throughout its operational life. This work aims to develop a longitudinal model of a generic aircraft using Euler-Lagrange equations to describe its dynamics, and to employ this model in the development of an antiskid system to enhance landing performance while preventing wheel skidding. The results demonstrate that the model, despite its simplicity, effectively represents the loads acting on the landing gear during braking, as well as the oscillations in pitch angle induced by the antiskid system’s modulation of brake commands. The antiskid system successfully reduced the aircraft’s stopping distance across various runway conditions, delivering particularly strong performance under adverse landing scenarios, and prevented prolonged wheel skidding, especially at high speeds.

Banana farming is an activity of extreme economic, social and cultural importance, strongly linked to family farming and consequently to the issues of man's permanence in the countryside. For man to understand the reason for his intersubjectivity with the rural environment and to make it the subject of his future aspirations and expectations, agroecological crops can be a point in favor of this self-understanding, since they aim to obtain efficient and safe cultivation methods that reduce risks to human health and the environment. In this sense, this study evaluated the effect of the essential oil of pink pepper or aroeira-mansa (Schinus terebinthifolius) on the in vitro growth of colonies of the phytopathogenic fungus Mycosphaerella fijiensis Morelet, the causal agent of Sigatoka-negra, which was isolated from banana leaves (Musa sp) with symptoms of the disease. The study was carried out with four treatments, carried out in petri dishes containing potato dextrose agar (PDA) culture medium: T1 (control) without application of oil, T2 with oil added to the PDA medium before solidification, T3 oil on the surface of the already solidified medium, and T4 oil on filter paper on the plate lid. Pink pepper essential oil was efficient in inhibiting the mycelial growth of Mycosphaerella fijiensis Morelet, in all methods tested (treatments), but the highest percentage of inhibition occurred in T3 at a concentration of 400 μL/20 mL. This result indicates that the use of pink pepper oil may be a promising alternative in disease management as opposed to the excessive use of pesticides in banana farming.

The evolution of studies on Trip Attractors (TAs) indicates that their impacts on the surrounding area encompass various urban issues, ranging from the transportation system to socioeconomic development. This work presents a Neighborhood Impact Study (EIV) of a shopping center located in the southern region of São José do Rio Preto-SP, Brazil. The method consisted of surveying some of the minimum issues regulated by the Brazilian City Statute, as well as additional aspects that support the study. To achieve the objectives set for the study, comparative assessment methodologies were developed between the period before and after the building, in addition to data surveys of the current context in the city. Among the criteria with available comparative data, IBGE census data and territorial sensing complements in QGIS software were used. On the other hand, for the other analyzed indicators, data from the Infosiga-SP platform on traffic accidents, municipal public transport mapping, and volumetric vehicle counting in the field were used. The analysis of the results revealed increases of over 100% in both the road system and population, as well as an ongoing challenge related to traffic safety, with 42 accidents recorded at the same location over time. These findings helped to identify changes in the study area, reveal correlations between the indicators, and evaluate the mitigation measures taken by local authorities.

The soybean productivity faces significant threats, such as target spot caused by the pathogen Corynespora cassiicola. Biological control, through bioprospecting in biomes with high biotechnological potential, such as mangroves, emerges as an alternative for disease management. In this context, actinobacteria from this biome represent a promising group for the development of new biofungicides. In thin study, 92 actinobacteria were isolated from mangrove sediment samples from the Cananéia region, São Paulo, Brazil. The isolates were morphologically selected and evaluated for their in vitro control potential against the phytopathogens Corynespora cassiicola, Colletotrichum truncatum, Macrophomina phaseolina, Rhizoctonia solani, and Sclerotinia sclerotiorum. Three isolates (MG04, MG26, and MG69) exhibited antifungal activity against all tested phytopathogens and were selected for characterization regarding the production of lytic enzymes (chitinase and β-1,3-glucanase), indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), siderophores, inorganic phosphate solubilization, and their potential for in vivo control of C. cassiicola in soybean, compared to the actinobacterium Streptomyces sp. ACTR8, a reference strain from Agrivalle Brasil’s culture collection. All isolates tested positive to produce lytic enzymes, IAA, and siderophores, but none were positive for phosphate solubilization. Isolates MG04 and MG26 stood out in chitinase production, while none showed outstanding β-1,3-glucanase production. Isolate MG26 also exhibited high IAA production, whereas Streptomyces sp. ACTR8 stood out for siderophore production. In the in vivo target spot control assay, all treatments demonstrated significant control efficiency, except for isolate MG69. Isolates MG04 and MG26 showed target spot control efficiency statistically similar to the commercial biofungicide Twixx-A (Agrivalle). The genome of isolate MG04 was sequenced, assembled, and annotated. Genomic metric analyses demonstrated that the MG04 genome formed a statistically supported clade in the phylogenomic analysis with S. solisilvae HNM0141. The genome mining strategy allowed the identification of gene clusters with compounds previously reported for biological activity against phytopathogens. The development of bioinputs based on Streptomyces solisilvae MG04 requires characterization of the active ingredient, optimization of bioprocesses for spore or metabolite production, formulation development, and agronomic validation under different agricultural conditions. For target spot management, it is essential to evaluate integration with chemical fungicides and potential applications across various crops and agricultural systems.

This study explores the role of assistive technology (AT) in improving the quality of life and autonomy of elderly people and individuals with reduced mobility, focusing on emerging solutions and the challenges faced in Brazil. Using visualization tools such as VOSviewer and WordCloud, the research mapped key terms and their interconnections in the AT literature, highlighting themes such as artificial intelligence, robotics, and mobility aids. The findings reveal that assistive technology holds significant potential for enhancing quality of life, particularly in areas like remote health monitoring, fall prevention, and creating accessible urban environments. However, Brazil still faces considerable challenges, such as resistance from the elderly to using technology, limited access due to high costs and lack of infrastructure, and a shortage of professional training for utilizing these technologies. The study concludes that more effective public policies, alongside innovation and professional training, are essential to ensure greater accessibility and usage of assistive technology. Collaboration between the technological and social sectors will be crucial to developing solutions that meet the needs of the aging population, particularly in the context of the growing global demographic shift.

The creation of PIX is understood as a milestone in the digital transformation of payment methods, since it provided an alternative for transfers and payments in real time, at any time, with low costs for users. Considering the relevance that PIX has gained in the country's economy, since its beginning of operation, in November 2020, the objective of this study was to analyze the evolution of the number of transactions via PIX, as well as the amounts moved, in an aggregated manner, for the national territory and also through municipal data, for the period between November 2020 and November 2024. In order to contemplate this objective, descriptive analysis of data at the level of Brazil and Brazilian municipalities on transactions carried out via PIX was used. As the main results obtained, it is indisputable that there has been significant and consistent growth in the use of PIX, however this has occurred with many disparities between municipalities, both in terms of use by individuals and legal entities, and PIX still has many possibilities for expansion in municipalities further away from large centers, since in these the adoption of this instant payment method was not as immediate as in large centers or municipalities close to them.

Animals move freely through the environment in search for resources. The stability of ecosystems determines the relationships between species and their biodiversity. However, anthropogenic interference in the environment increasingly threatens ecological relationships and the survival of species. Bees play a crucial role in maintaining ecosystems, but their influence is limited by the flight capacity of each species. Various biotic and abiotic factors influence this capacity. In the case of bees from the genus Melipona, the flight distance is approximately 2000 meters. Using the mark-release-recapture technique, this study aimed to evaluate the flight distance and return capacity of individuals from the stingless bee species Melipona quadrifasciata in an anthropized environment. Colonies were placed in semi-field conditions within an anthropized landscape for analysis over time. The released bees were monitored using a Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) system, which allowed for individual tracking and recording of return times. Return capacity was assessed based on the number of bees that returned during both rainy and dry seasons, as well as across a gradient of distances. The intertegular span was used to determine the size of the bees, and land-use classes were employed to identify factors influencing return capacity. Returns were observed at distances of up to 7500 meters. The distance gradient and bee size influenced both the capacity and time taken to return to the colony. The results indicated that bee size and land-use classes are factors influencing both the capacity and time of return for this species. Although no strong evidence was found regarding the influence of climatic seasonality, a reduction in the number of returns was observed during the rainy season.

Traditional regression methods assume the availability of precise labels for training models. However, in many contexts, obtaining fully accurate labels may not be feasible, requiring reliance on multiple experts whose opinions may diverge due to intrinsic human noise, which is difficult to measure. This noise can be present in the input variables, as different experts may interpret certain observations in distinct ways due to their expertise. In this work, we propose an innovative approach to training regression models in scenarios in which the labels contain noise, resulting from multiple divergent expert opinions. The proposed method first estimates each expert’s expertise both generally and at the instance level, assigning weights to their opinions. Then, a weighted average of these opinions is computed, using the learned weights to adjust the regression model based on the input variables. The proposed approach has a solid theoretical foundation and, through experiments with both simulated and real data, has been empirically demonstrated to outperform traditional methods. In summary, this method provides a simple, fast, and effective solution for training regression models in scenarios with noisy labels generated by differing expert opinions.

This study analyzed and compared the evolution of enrollments in Inclusive Special Education in the Northeast region of Brazil between 2019 and 2023, focusing on the structural and accessibility factors of schools. Through exploratory analysis and statistical modeling, the study aimed to understand how different variables related to infrastructure and faculty influence the presence of students with disabilities in regular schools. The results indicated a significant increase in enrollments in Inclusive Special Education, particularly in 2023, with a 35% rise compared to 2019. An expansion of accessibility resources was observed, such as adapted restrooms, ramps, and handrails, although elements like elevators and tactile, visual, and auditory signage remain scarce. Statistical modeling, based on the Poisson-Inverse Gaussian model, confirmed the positive relationship between the presence of these resources and the number of enrollments, highlighting the importance of school infrastructure in educational inclusion. Additionally, the number of specialized teachers and specific classrooms also proved to be relevant factors. By comparing the adjusted models for 2019 and 2023, it was concluded that, although the selection criteria indicated a better fit for 2019, the 2023 model exhibited better statistical assumptions, making it the most suitable choice for inference. The results emphasize the need for public policies aimed at expanding accessibility resources and pedagogical support, ensuring the realization of the right to inclusive education.

Creativity is the ability to produce something original and appropriate to the context for which it was intended. Parenting styles are the ways in which parents deal with issues of power, hierarchy, and emotional support in relation to their children, having a significant influence on crucial areas of development. The objective of this study was to analyze whether there is a relationship between parenting styles and the creativity of individuals. The research is descriptive, inferential, with a quantitative approach. The sample consisted of 31 adult participants of both sexes who responded online to two instruments. The first consisted of two activities derived from the Thinking Creatively with Words test, which tested the participants' creative verbal fluency. The second was the Parental Authoritative Questionnaire (PAQ), which seeks to evaluate the concepts that Baumrind presents about parenting styles (permissive, authoritarian, and authoritative). The results suggest that there is no significant correlation between parenting styles and creativity. Hypotheses are made about the relationship between styles and self-efficacy. It is suggested that other measures of creativity be used, with an age limitation for participants.

Violence against women is widely recognized as a social and public health issue that significantly impacts society and the quality of life of its victims. This issue has been the subject of numerous investigations due to the alarming increase in daily cases and the complexity of the factors involved. It is a multifaceted phenomenon that encompasses psychological and cultural aspects as well as relational dynamics. In this context, the present study investigates the contributions of women to the maintenance of the cycle of a violent relationship, placing them in a position of co-participation in an intimate relationship where they remain in a situation of violence that often escapes the field of consciousness. Among the most significant aspects, we observe, through Freudian psychoanalytic theory, concepts of womanhood and femininity beyond symptoms and conscious manifestations. Thus, the objective of this monographic research was to understand the unconscious processes that lead women to (actively) remain in such relationships despite the suffering, negative repercussions, and violence inflicted upon their lives. As a further development, we also examined how female subjectivity is impacted by the historical construction of patriarchy.

The treatment of industrial effluents containing toxic compounds has driven the search for alternative strategies to reduce process costs. Among these pollutants, phenolic compounds pose significant risks to human health and the environment, even at concentrations close to 1 ppm. Adsorption using activated carbon is widely employed in the industry due to its cost-effectiveness and operational simplicity, also enabling the use of renewable raw materials. Thus, this work aimed to develop strategies to reduce activated carbon consumption in batch adsorption processes. Phenol was used as a model compound, along with industrial effluents containing phenolic compounds. The study evaluated the optimization of operational parameters (contact time and pH) and multi-stage strategies using different adsorbents. It was found that the optimal contact time varied depending on the adsorbent, whereas a pH range of 3–4 maximized adsorption efficiency. The feasibility of a two-stage process without intermediate filtration depended on the desorption capacity of the adsorbent, whereas the two-stage approach with intermediate filtration showed potential to reduce the cost of a single-stage process by 33%. It is expected that these results will benefit companies operating in the sector by providing strategies to reduce adsorbent consumption and mitigate environmental impact.

The predatory development driven by human activities accelerates climate change, which in turn intensifies natural extreme events, further exacerbated by environmental degradation. From the perspective of coastal landscapes, rapid urban growth has compromised the ability of coastal areas to respond effectively to extreme events, significantly increasing their vulnerability. The Santa Catarina coastline is of high tourist interest, which fuels real estate speculation aimed at building condominiums, resorts, and vacation homes, resulting in environmental degradation that significantly impacts Coastal Wetlands. Consequently, there is a reduction in the availability of ecosystem services, leading to economic, social, and environmental losses. This study focuses on diagnosing the coastal landscape of Santa Catarina in relation to flood disasters by using parameters such as topography, soil characteristics, land use and cover, precipitation, and environmental legislation. The research employed a matrix calculation in a GIS environment, overlaying rasterized maps for each parameter. The analyses, which highlight areas of greater hydrological significance and flood susceptibility, emphasize that conserving key areas such as coastal wetlands is essential for providing flood control ecosystem services. However, Brazilian environmental legislation falls short in offering adequate protection for these areas. Thus, rethinking urban development while respecting the conservation of natural areas that ensure the provision of ecosystem services becomes indispensable for public and environmental safety.

This course completion work aimed to study intermittent oxygen transfer in pneumatic chemical bioreactors, through a comparative analysis with the method conventionally used for aeration of biochemical processes: the continuous regime. The aim was to verify the feasibility of replacing this method with the pulsed regime, as an efficient alternative for reducing gas consumption. For this purpose, preliminary tests were carried out under different conditions of opening and closing of the air flow control valve (decided through a central point factorial experimental design), in the water/air system, to determine important parameters in the efficiency of the process, such as the volumetric coefficient of oxygen transfer and oxygen transfer efficiency. These tests served as the basis for a statistical analysis of significance, which supported the decision to choose the conditions used (3vvm continuous and 3vvm 1F/3A) to conduct the cultures with biological beings. Then, experiments were carried out in duplicate with Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeasts in the two most promising conditions. The results demonstrated a 2% higher yield of cell growth to substrate consumption under intermittent aeration conditions. In addition, a 25% reduction in gas consumption was observed, representing significant savings in crops and contributing to the viability of the process.

Succinic acid is a compound that stands out in the chemical industry due to its simplified structure, which allows its use in various sectors. Currently, it is obtained using fossil-based raw materials as the foundation of production. However, with the ongoing pursuit of reducing fossil resource consumption, biological routes have been increasingly studied, aiming for a more renewable and sustainable industry. This project aims to analyze, through simulations and using the methodology known as dynamic flux balance analysis (dFBA), the production of succinic acid using genetically modified Escherichia coli (E. coli) with glycerol as the substrate. This analysis was conducted using experimental data as a reference, with the Nelder-Mead algorithm as the primary optimization model. The objective function was the optimization of cell growth during the aerobic phase of the process and the production of succinic acid during the anaerobic phase. Alongside dFBA analysis, the flux balance analysis (FBA) methodology was also employed to assess the behavior of E. coli in different culture media. The results obtained deviated from those recorded experimentally in the reference study, exhibiting higher cell growth and lower succinic acid production, with shorter production times in both cases. This discrepancy between the simulated and experimental values indicates that dFBA analysis was not effective in accurately simulating laboratory processes. Therefore, further studies are necessary to determine the origin of these differences and to understand what adjustments could be made to improve the accuracy and reliability of the results.

Accurate forecasting of electricity demand is a crucial element for the efficient and sustainable planning of the energy sector. This study focuses on a comparative analysis between the ARIMA (Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average) model and Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs) for forecasting electricity demand in Brazil, utilizing advanced time series modeling techniques. The importance of this study is based on the growing need to optimize the use of energy resources, effectively balancing supply and demand. Accurate forecasting significantly contributes to preventing overloads and waste, which are essential factors for cost reduction and ensuring a stable supply. Furthermore, the rational use of electricity has a direct impact on environmental preservation, enabling the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and supporting sustainability goals. In the Brazilian context, the relevance of this study is even more pronounced, considering that the country's energy matrix is one of the cleanest in the world, with a significant share of renewable sources. According to recent data, renewable sources will represent a substantial portion of Brazil’s installed electricity generation capacity in the coming years. Accurate demand forecasting is fundamental to the success of government initiatives and long-term planning in the sector, contributing to a more sustainable, economical, and equitable energy development for the Brazilian population. The primary objective of this study was to forecast electricity demand in Brazil by using and comparing two robust methods: the ARIMA model and RNNs. The specific objectives included an exploratory analysis of energy demand data, the implementation and tuning of ARIMA and RNN models, a performance comparison using the Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) metric, and the identification of the most effective method considering accuracy, complexity, and applicability to real-world data. The results obtained in this study demonstrated the effectiveness of both models in forecasting electricity demand in Brazil. The ARIMA model exhibited slightly superior accuracy, while the RNN model stood out for its computational efficiency. The comparative analysis revealed that, although ARIMA achieved higher accuracy in predictions, RNNs offer significant advantages in terms of processing time and scalability. These findings have important implications for the Brazilian energy sector, providing insights for optimizing energy resource planning and management, aligning with sustainable development goals and the country's energy transition targets.

The present work consists of a study of permutation groups through solving exercises from the book “Permutation Groups” by John D. Dixon and Brian Mortimer, published by Springer in 1996. The text is divided in four chapters. In the second chapter, we present the work done in “Undergraduate Thesis 1”, which includes a brief review of some fundamental concepts in group theory and the solution of selected exercises from sections 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4 and 1.5 of the book. The third chapter, related to the “Undergraduate Thesis 2”, continues the resolution of exercises from section 1.5 and concludes with section 1.6. When necessary, we present some definitions or notations used. Keywords: Permutations. Symmetries. Actions.

Cement is a widely used material and holds significant importance and impact in the construction sector in Brazil and many other countries. The cement market is characterized by relevant concentration within a small number of economic groups (Cunha; Fernandez, 2003; Dornelas, 2013; Santos, 2011), which, according to theory, increases the likelihood of the exercise of market power (Church; Ware, 2000). In this context, the present study aims to analyze economic concentration acts and anticompetitive practices judged by the Administrative Council for Economic Defense (Cade) between 2015 and 2023. Regarding the reviewed concentration acts, it was observed that most were approved without restrictions, and the majority were also processed under a fast–track procedure. As for anticompetitive practices, all the administrative proceedings were dismissed. Thus, although there were economic concentration operations, it was found that they did not harm competition. Furthermore, the administrative proceedings concerning alleged anticompetitive practices judged during the study period were also dismissed.
