This study seeks to understand the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the activities of the student movement at the Sorocaba campus of the Federal University of São Carlos. The text provides historical context for the student movement’s role in shaping the campus community and compares the pre-pandemic landscape—illustrated by the 2018 campus occupation—to the changes that occurred during and after the lockdown period. Recounting moments from the occupation demonstrates the forms of action and the level of participation and engagement of students in the movement prior to social isolation. The research employs a qualitative approach, using questionnaires administered to students from different admission cohorts, in order to identify perceptions regarding the current activities of the student movement at UFSCar Sorocaba. The results show a significant break in the movement’s continuity, evidenced by the decline in collective consciousness and the absence of processes for building political knowledge between senior and new students. The conclusion drawn is that the pandemic has created a “gap” in the trajectory of the student movement, affecting its organizational and formative dimensions and reinforcing the need to rebuild the collective bonds that sustain university political life.
