Resumo
This study aimed to deepen the understanding of how individuals treated at Psychosocial Care Centers (CAPS) construct a perception of themselves in relation to psychiatric diagnosis. Through a qualitative content analysis of semi-structured interviews, it was possible to categorize which aspects of life history relate to psychic suffering, such as family, financial insecurity, violence, and grief. It was also found that psychiatric diagnosis interferes with different areas of life by becoming a target of prejudice and by prompting changes in personal achievements, and that the meaning attributed to it can be either chronic or derived from a single episode. The study was conducted with users of a CAPS II in a mid-sized city in the interior of São Paulo state, taking into account the complexity of individual experiences and the social challenges involved. Data analysis was guided by content analysis, which made it possible to interpret the narratives through the interaction between individual accounts and socio-historical contexts. This work seeks to contribute to the advancement of mental health practices, respecting the singularity of subjects and offering support for the improvement of public policies aimed at community-based, non-institutional care.
