Abstract

This study evaluated the feasibility of using CA-70 steel as a substitute for CA-50 steel in the design of foundation blocks. The investigation examined the effects of this substitution on different block dimensions, concrete strength classes, and pile load capacities, quantifying material consumption and analyzing the structural performance of the elements. For this purpose, the blocks were analytically designed, and the concrete and main reinforcement steel consumptions were quantified. The analysis considered variables such as block geometry, number and diameter of piles, and concrete properties, allowing for a comparison between steel options in terms of structural and economic efficiency. The results indicate that CA-70 tends to reduce the amount of steel required for the main reinforcement in large foundation blocks, whereas in smaller blocks the use of CA-50 remains more economically advantageous. Therefore, the adoption of CA-70 should be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
