Resumo
The Social Functions of Music, described by Alan Merriam, are an important tool for promoting democratic music education in Brazilian Basic Education. However, the presence of this content in schools must be studied, once music education has faced challenges that limit its operation. The drafting of the Diretrizes e Bases da Educação Nacional Law (LDBEN in Portuguese) is one of them, as it addresses the regulation of Art Education in a considerably unspecific manner. Through documental and bibliographical analysis, this Final Course Research sought to identify the school program outlined by the LDBENs, analyze Brazilian legislation on Art Education and relate these official norms to the possibilities that the Social Functions of Music encounter. Thus, it was found that the current political strategy’s lack of interest regarding the establishment of quality Art Education reflects in its configuration, currently described as imprecise; and limits the Social Functions of Music’s development.
