Resumo

This study examines the portrayal of the detective figure in the film Enola Holmes (2020) focusing on the order of discourse and the power dynamics highlighted by the syncretic materiality. It investigates whether the emergence of a female subject role within the detective archetype is influenced by the Sherlockian universe. The main objective was to analyze how the visual materiality of the audiovisual production, in conjunction with its verbal discourse, shaped the identity of the female detective character. Specific objectives included: a) investigating the characters' bodily and facial expressions to identify subtle clues that define their identities; b) understanding the order of discourse and power relations depicted in the film; c) examining the historical revisitation of the Victorian era through the lens of contemporary discourse. The research was conducted using an inductive approach, analyzing verbal and visual data through Foucauldian discourse theory, the Historical Semiotics concept proposed by Jean Jacques Courtine, and the evidentiary paradigm developed by Carlo Ginzburg. The analysis revealed that the film's depiction of the detective is symbolic, with Enola using her investigative skills to challenge patriarchy. The study found that the detective figure was constructed based on her social position, revealing a detective configuration distinct from that of Sherlock Holmes.
