    The mammalian mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) shows a high mutation frequency, which can lead to severe diseases in humans. However, disease development relies on the mutation load, which is tissue specific. This is explained by the existence of multiple mtDNA copies in every cell, leading to the coexistence of mutant and wild-type mtDNAs (known as heteroplasmy). Importantly, the liver shows a rapid age-dependent increase of the mutation load. Mitochondria are constantly fusing and dividing, enabling the exchange of their content within the mitochondrial network. However, this mitochondrial dynamics also facilitate a mtDNA mutation to spread through the mitochondrial network, which can prevent the cell to eliminate it. Using heteroplasmic knockout mice for mitofusin 2 (Mfn2), we show that liver accumulation of a specific mtDNA haplotype takes place regardless of Mfn2. Provided that Mfn2 plays a key role in mitochondrial dynamics, this finding indicates that liver mtDNA segregation does not rely on mitochondrial dynamics.

    This study analyzed the viability of adding cocoa shell flower and cocoa nuts flower in to polyolefins polymers. Brazil is the 7th greatest producer of Cocoa, and this largest production generates a lot of waste that spoils the soils. This study collected this waste, reduced in to flour, was characterized and added to the pure polymer. This composite was subjected in to thermogravimetric test, rheometry test, flow rate test, microstructural and mechanical characterization. As a result, the composite became harder than the pure polymer, but less ductile. However, it became economically and environmentally viable as a load material, since it reduces the composite final price in relation to the pure polymer and takes out the waste that has little practicable uses.

    Workers in the information technology industry who produce software, hardware, among other products arising from the technological revolution, which are situated in the debate on cognitive capitalism and immaterial labor, have an extremely intellectual and creative work. In the midst of a highly autonomous and flexible organizational model, they appear as professionals who have high demands in terms of cognition and engagement. In this sense, the present research sought to verify if and how autonomy is experienced and perceived by information workers who work in a software company. The research also aimed to discuss possible forms of control over their activities, resulting from a reconfigured and flexible capitalism. For this, we carried out a case study from a software development company located in the city of São Carlos-SP, which has a diversity of professionals in the information technology (IT) area. Semi-structured interviews were carried out with workers who perform different activities in the company.

    Polymer modeling and simulation are increasingly used as tools to help conduct experimental studies. With the evolution of computers, such tools can be easily implemented by materials research groups without an equipment barrier to cross. However, modeling polymer systems is not trivial and there is a range of different possible approaches. This perspective brings a presentation of these different approaches and their applications in the field of Science and Engineering of Polymeric Materials, as well as a review in relation to their capabilities. In conclusion, the best model of a macromolecule does not exist in an absolute way, it is situational. Variables, such as the atomistic detail required and the phenomenon addressed by the study, influence the choice of the type of model and how it is implemented in a simulation. Atomistic models are rarely preferred for polymeric systems due to their high computational cost, but occasionally find their use in studies of chemical reactions and blend miscibility. Coarse-grained models are more versatile and, as they are coarser, they demand less computational capacity. Therefore, they are the most used models in the field of polymeric materials, allowing studies on larger scales of size and time, such as the conformation of macromolecules and the forecast of properties such as density and Young’s modulus of polymers. Mean field models treat polymeric chains as continuous curves in space and have their applications centered on the thermodynamic study of phases in blends and copolymers systems. Finally, so-called multi-scale models can be achieved, for example, via a mixed use of different models, and are usually implemented in more complete studies of a specific polymer.

    The dust present in the atmosphere is called atmospheric particulate matter (MPA) and its composition depends on the emitting sources, which can be natural or anthropogenic. The emission and dispersion of pollutants are influenced by the wind and the size of particles present in the air. According to the size of the MPA, smaller and lighter particles can remain suspended, but depending on their constitution, these particles can aggregate more easily and form larger particles, called sedimentable MPA (MPASe). The blood alterations, responses of the antioxidant defense system and enzymes related to ionic regulation in the gills associated with possible histopathological changes which can alter the performance of the species in the face of other environmental challenges and compromise its survival were analyzed. Despite the high concentrations of Fe, Al,Ti, Mn and other trace metals in MPASe, the hematological parameters (RBC, Hct, [Hb], VCM, HCM and [HCM]) were unchanged, but some DNA instability indication in the erythrocytes was observed after exposure to 1 g.L-1 of MPASe for 96 hours. Regarding the immune system, the responses varied, with an increase in lymphocytes and a decrease in monocytes. The metals present in MPASe did not alter the functioning of the Na+/K+-ATPase enzyme in the gills and the plasma Na+/K+ balance was maintained however, the change in the plasma Na+/Cl- ratio with a decrease in chloride ion and in the activity of carbonic anhydrase enzyme at a concentration of 1 g.L-1 of MPASe indicate ionic unbalance. The antioxidant enzyme catalase in the gills increased activity for after fish exposure to 0.1 g.L-1 of MPASe; the activity of the biotransforming enzyme GST that acts in the conjugation of glutathione reduced (GSH) with xenobiotics increased in fish exposed to 0.1 g.L-1 of MPASe and the GSH content increased all groups exposed to MPASe. The oxidative stress biomarker LPO did not show significant differences for the gills, confirming that the metals present did not inhibit the performance of enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidant systems. In conclusion, the results of this study showed that the metals dissolved in the aquatic environment absorbed by the fish gills, although at sublethal level, caused genotoxic damage, change the immune system and antioxidants responses after 96 h-exposure. It could be harmful if animals are exposed for long periods as can occur in natural environment.

    Polypropylene is one of the most consumed plastics in the world and its synthesis takes place mainly from the use of Ziegler-Natta catalyst systems, in which catalysts and their supports are compounds containing chlorine in their composition. Acid residues, based on chlorides, remain in Polypropylene after its polymerization, causing problems related to the corrosion of metallic equipment for processing such polyolefin, in addition to the degradation of the polymer and additives present, such as primary antioxidants. To neutralize such residues, antacid additives are used in the PP industry and recommended in several literatures. Thus, the present work aimed to study and understand the influence of different types of antacids (Hydrotalcite and Calcium and Magnesium Stearates), at different levels of 0.05%, 0.10% and 0.20%, on properties mechanical, thermo-oxidative, color and gloss for PP compounds for application in the automotive sector, working with the company LyondellBasell. Thus, a good behavior was observed among the properties tested for the Hydrotalcite-type antacid, especially at levels from 0.10%.

    Maraging steels combine ultra-high strength (1500 – 2450 MPa of tensile strength) with excellent toughness (50 – 240 MPa√𝑚) and are widely used in aerospace and military applications. Unlike other high strength steels hardened by reactions involving carbon, maraging steels achieve great hardness by the precipitation of intermetallic compounds of Ni, Mo and Ti on a soft martensitic matrix, during aging heat treatment. The exposure of these materials to extended times or excessive temperatures (overaging) leads to the excessive coarsening and growth of the precipitates and the partial reversion of the martensite to austenite, one of the equilibrium phases at room temperature. These reactions have great effect on the material’s mechanical properties, such as tensile strength, ductility and toughness, hence the comprehension of the phenomena which occur during heat treatment operations becomes extremely relevant. In the present work, the influence of the heat treatment’s parameters – solution treatment temperature, aging temperature and aging time – on the microstructure, hardness and martensite reversion was evaluated for a class 350 maraging steel. The austenite content of the samples was estimated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique, supported by ferritoscope results. Solution temperatures over 900 °C resulted in intense grain growth of the previous austenite, hardness reduction and reversed austenite content reduction. Aging at 600 °C for 12 h resulted in 40 % of reversed austenite, highest level amongst the conditions evaluated. Austenite reversion kinetics was proven to be dependent on aging temperature and time. Peak hardness – condition with hardness of 60 HRC and 5 % of reverted austenite – was achieved by aging at 480 °C for 5 h, with hardness retention level for at least 50 h of aging time. This behavior indicates the possibility of usage of a shorter thermal cycle than the commercially applied for this steel, as well as the potential application at this temperature for prolonged times without overaging

    Seed treatment has been an essential step in agricultural production systems, especially on chemical treatment which, despite being widely used, has the potential to harm the environment and the rural workers. Because of that, biological treatment using microorganisms has been widely studied within seed technology. Thus, the aim of this study was to analyze, through a systematic review, the situation of research and scientific dissemination, as well as the approach and the main microorganisms that current studied for application in seed treatment. For this review, a systematic search was carried out on the Web of Science platform from 2010 to 2020, evaluating the scientific production per year and the most important scientific journals, the microorganisms and plants used in studies related to seed treatment, in addition to the effects of these microorganisms in the seeds or seedlings. Studies with biological treatment with microorganisms in seeds have increased in recent years, with a consistent increase in the number of papers published in 2019 and 2020, and the journals that most linked articles with this subject were “Biological control” and “Legume research”. The most used microorganism for seed treatment is Trichoderma sp., especially T. harzianum, which is widely used in several agricultural species, such as corn, beans and wheat, with the focus, primarily, on the pathogens from soil and seeds.

    The study addresses the development of cardboard boxes as secondary packaging in industries with a high variety of products, considering their consequences in the supply chain. In particular, it is evaluated how the design characteristics of cardboard packaging influence different actors involved in the production, transport and handling of the product. In industries with a high variety of products, secondary packaging can be standardized or customized according to the product's characteristics. Through a case study, the two options are analyzed by specialists in the field of packaging research and development, according to a system structured in five areas of interaction, namely: logistics, marketing, production, product development and the environment. The research revealed how the development of a customized box brings a more advantageous result for the company and its supply chain, as protection for the product in its marketing strategy and transport. The standardized box is competitive only when there isn’t variation in weight and shape in the products of an industry. Thus, it is believed that the research brings contributions to the productive sector, to academia and to society, by recognizing that the packaging design goes beyond the primary function of protecting the product in the areas of interaction considered

    The present work aimed to draw an overview of the main points related to the state of the art of 4D Printing through the analysis of different literature available on the subject. The origins of the additive manufacturing process were studied, with a brief exposition of its history and a survey of the names of its developers, along with their contributions. Within the history, some fundamental concepts of 3D Printing and, later, of 4D Printing were seen. In the literature review, the fundamental points that permeate the 4D Printing technology were seen, initially with exposition of a series of general concepts that help in the definition of this type of process and with the survey of the main pillars that make 4D Printing an advanced processing in the engineering area, namely: 3D Printing facility, stimulus, stimulus-responsive material, interaction mechanism and mathematical modeling. Following the literature review, what are smart materials were defined, more specifically materials with shape memory, and the differentiation of the concept of Shape Memory Materials and Shape Changing Materials. Subsequently, there was a survey of the materials most commonly used in the process: Shape Memory Polymers (SMP), Shape Memory Alloys (SMA) and hydrogels, and the reason for their feasibility of use, through the analysis of characteristics of their responsive behavior to different stimuli. Subsequently, the main behaviors of response to stimuli of 4D Printing products were seen, which are the behaviors of folding, bending, swelling and stretching. Also, the basic types of stimuli were defined: thermal and with application of force, thermal and without application of force, pH and without application of force and thermo-photo-mechanical and their functioning was explained, in addition to the scoring of possible other mechanisms. Further on, there was a survey of the main printing techniques used in additive manufacturing together with their definitions and process steps, being Stereolithography (SLA), Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM), Direct Ink Writing (DIW) and Digital Light Projection (DLP) the most popular techniques. Finally, the main applications were researched, mostly present in the health, robotics and aerospace areas due to the high possibility of customization of the products of the process and also the perspectives of new applications, which would have a great impact on everyday life.

    The present project deals with ancient urban legends passed from generation to generation in important tourist destinations in different countries. Cultural stories are important decision makers in choosing travel destinations and are important for the tourism marketing and cultural heritage of each destination. For the accomplishment of this work, bibliographical research of authors in the anthropological branch and study on the planning of tourism marketing were used. The idea of the project is to give voice to storytellers and understand what is the relevance for the tourist segment.

    Protein subcellular localization is a really important classification task, because the location of proteins inside a cell is directly related to these protein’s functions. As there are a lot of proteins that reside at the same time in two or more locations in a cell or move between locations, usually supervised multi-label classification methods are designed to attack this problem. This approach is well-established in the literature; however, it presents some disadvantages such as: (i) the need for a large amount of labeled instances to train the classifier; (ii) this approach ignores the fact that unlabeled instances can provide valuable information for the classification; and (iii) there are a lot of areas in which unlabeled data is abundant but manually labelling an instance is too expensive and time-consuming. Semi-Supervised Learning (SSL) is a subfield of traditional machine learning, in which the learner tries to exploit both labeled and unlabeled data at the same time. Semi-Supervised Classification is a in a subcategory of SSL which uses the available unlabeled data to improve the classification prformance of a classification process that already uses labeled data. The main goal of this project was the develop a semi-supervised multi-label classifier able to use the abundant number of unlabeled proteins to improve the prediction of protein subcellular localization. The SSL algorithm developed in this work is based on the predictive clustering tree framework and it was constructed, tested and analysed in many SSL scenarios in order to test whether or not the classifier was able to use the unlabeled instances to help during the classification process in a set of Multi-Label protein subcellular localization datasets, from 3 different taxonomies: Viridiplantae, Virus and Fungi.

    It was found that mental disorders are among the main causes of absence and loss of days at work. This study aimed to identify the main triggers of suffering from the perspective of the workers themselves, possible causes for them, in addition to discussing the role of the company in this context and indicating possible improvement guidelines that could be applied based on the most critical issues that were raised (with the intention of avoiding mental illnesses as a result). Therefore, scientific articles and government websites were used to review the literature and apply a questionnaire that had 73 respondents, for a quantitative analysis, and later application of interviews with 10 workers for qualitative analysis. It was understood, from the results, that there is suffering and pleasure simultaneously in the company in question, as seen in the literature in the Psychodynamics of Work. It was seen that the critical categories are related to collection, tasks and rest and that real work as opposed to prescribed work often contributes to this result as studied in Ergonomics. It was also concluded that the company needs to review the actions implemented to monitor indicators and understand if they are effective and comprehensive to all workers in the organization, in addition to implementing better forms of recognition, evaluating forms of collection and deadlines.

    In order to maximize financial results Braskem uses optimization software to generate monthly plans for raw material purchases, production and meeting demand. The software models the main equipment’s and flows of all its olefin and aromatics units (1st generation) and resin plants (2nd generation). The quality of the model is essential for the quality of the generated plan, and one of the main points in it are the pyrolysis furnaces since their output will feed all the rest of the operation. The equations in these furnaces are based on linear regressions with product yields as a function of naphtha qualities (olefin content, aromatics content, density, etc.) and furnace operating conditions (hydrocarbon recycle flow, temperature, pressure, etc.). Thus, when major changes occur in the raw materials received or in the furnaces, it is necessary to update the equations to maintain their representativeness. The study occurred because since the last revision of the equations Braskem adopted a policy to increase the use of imported raw materials that have distinctive characteristics from the domestic ones and, therefore, generate a gap in the region of validity for which the equations were initially modeled. The objective of the study was to find a new set of yield equations for the different olefin and aromatic products generated in the cracking process considering in its modeling the changes that occurred in the raw materials processed and in the characteristics of the furnaces of the unit in question. During the study, the following steps were conducted: obtaining the quality of the naphtha in the laboratory; definitions of the Naphtha to be simulated and the operational conditions of the plant; simulation of the yields by the SPSL SPYRO software. Determination of the equations by the SCMart Suite software and their implementation in the same. With this study it is expected that the new equations found will better represent the real yields obtained in the plants in comparison with the previous equations, thus guaranteeing more confidence and quality in the monthly optimization plans conducted.

    Games are playful means of developing skills and can contribute to the cognitive, motor and social field of children, including those with some type and degree of visual impairment. The aim of this article is to validate the concept of a board game for visually impaired children and, for that, a case study of an assistive product prototype elaborated in the discipline of Design and Development of Sustainable Products and Processes was carried out. Production Engineering course at a Public University of the State of São Paulo. They were explained in order to understand the participants' perception about the developed project and validate its concept. The results indicated the approval of the concept mainly for the following reasons: to promote the integration of visually impaired children and visionaries; for the simplicity of the game, highlighting a differential for the issue of low cost; for being easy to learn and playful. Some improvements were even suggested to increase the ease of use. It was concluded that inclusive games can influence a fairer society and encourage the development of children with or without visual impairment.

    The present work aims to study biomaterials that are used in implants, aiming to understand the potential of titanium alloys containing stabilizing elements such as niobium and zirconium, these elements improve mechanical properties and biocompatibility with human bone. Quaternary and ternary alloys will be addressed, illustrating this potential for improvement. Alloys containing these elements showed a significant reduction in the elastic modulus of titanium alloys compared to Co-Cr alloys, Stainless Steel 304 and 316 and Ti-64 Alloys, which is an important property for the implant to behave similarly. to human bone, which has a modulus of approximately 17 GPa. In addition, titanium alloys are the best for acquiring the mechanical and chemical properties to which the implant will be requested. The Ti-13Nb-6Ta-7Zr and Ti-7Nb-6Ta-13Zr alloys have a modulus of elasticity of 46 GPa, being very suitable for an implant, in addition to having excellent hardness and corrosion resistance properties.     The present research sought to understand how this change in the forms of control adopted by technology companies are perceived by workers, whether they perceive themselves as autonomous or controlled, in a Digital Marketing company, in São Carlos-SP, which I will name company A. More specifically, I intend to analyze the set of company practices, within the speeches of the interns, analyzing their perception of the liminality between the perception of control and autonomy. I will mainly resort to the theoretical assumptions of Dardot and Laval (2016) for the analysis, in the discussion about flexibility and change in the forms of control, the workers of areas where the execution is intellectual and creative, with a demand of bias the requirement of a worker autonomous and self-managed that have high demands for the production of human and engaged capital. Throughout the monograph, it is argued that the discourse of entrepreneurship was one of the main factors for the transformation of control mechanisms.

    For real-world data to be explored, pre-processing is needed in order to ease machine learning applications. Nowadays, various pre-processing techniques are available, and this paper aims to show the impacts of using clustering as one of them, more specifically in linear regression problems. Two experiments were carried out, using two different databases: the first one describing data from a series of properties from Ames, a city from Iowa, in the United States of America, and the second one containing information about COVID-19. It was observed that in both cases, clustering before applying the regression model improves regressor performance, based on database nature. Besides the improvement, it is recommended to use clustering alongside other pre-processing techniques.

    This study evaluates, using a discrete-event simulation, the supply of a sugar and ethanol mill that operates with a mixed truck fleet, composed of road trains and trucks with two trailers. For the sugar and ethanol industry, logistics represents a key issue since it is responsible for the continuous supply of sugarcane to the mill throughout the harvest. The mixed fleet coordination represents a challenge, given the operational differences between the various vehicle types. This paper evaluates a mill's supply system by varying the fleet composition, the number of unloading points, and how these points are serviced. Discrete-event modeling and simulation are used as a tool to represent the mill's supply operations. To analyze the scenarios, the risk of mill supply shortage, storage, mill utilization, the amount of sugarcane delivered daily, and the time the vehicles remain in the mill are the indicators evaluated. The system’s performance was evaluated with different configurations to find viable alternatives for each fleet composition mix. The scenarios with greater participation of road trains showed better performance. Furthermore, the challenges of operating with a mixed fleet, also found in the literature,1 were stressed. These challenges are such as the dimensioning and coordination of the different types of vehicles and the adoption and interpretation of indicators to evaluate the performance of the fleet.

    The article is the result of a course completion work (TCC), linked to the Degree in Pedagogy at the Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCar), in which we present referrals and results of a study developed with two Brazilian research groups in Mathematics Education, among which are part of Pedagogy academics from federal public universities. As a goal, we intend to understand their role in the initial training of future teachers, as well as the motivations for linking and staying in this space mediated by research in the perspective of unveiling conditions and rationales that emerge from active participation in meetings. The methodology adopted is part of the field of qualitative research in education in which data are primarily produced based on a Google Forms questionnaire. The theoretical framework explores problems and perspectives of teacher training through research, as well as the characterization of mathematical training and for the teaching of Mathematics by the pedagogue. In terms of results, we raised indicators that demarcate the contribution of study groups to the expansion of the didactic-pedagogical repertoire through the reflective bias made possible in the collective view of the participants of "MANCALA – Study and Research Group in Mathematics Education, Culture and Teacher Training" (CNPq/UFSCar) and the "TA'ARÕMBY - Study and Research Group in Mathematics Education and Society (CNPq/UFMS/CPNV). In view of the data production and analysis process, it is possible to conclude that the participation in the groups awakened three types of feelings due to the research bias, namely: 1. Feeling of belonging, which is directly related to the welcome in the study space; 2. The proposal of the research groups to constitute themselves as an environment of collaboration and sharing; 3. Feeling of identification that has the group environment as a collective space, of identity with the teaching career that reverberates to what it means to be a teacher.
