This work is about education, particularly, the phenomenon of student dropout, a common and recurrent problem in educational institutions in general. Studies indicate that the students who start, but do not finish their courses are related to social, academic and economic loss. In the public sector, they correspond to public resources invested without the expected return to society. The research target of the work is the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of São Paulo, São Carlos campus, covering the period that marks the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic in Brazil, from mid-March 2020 until December de 2021. The main objective is to understand the strategies to combat student dropout in higher technology courses on campus occurred during the Covid-19 pandemic. In order to evaluate the phenomenon from a chronological perspective, it was decided to break down the main objective into three specific objectives: 1. To verify the institutional response to the pandemic. 2. Evaluate the phenomena of dropout and student retention and the institutional response during the pandemic and 3. Compare dropout indicators before and after the pandemic. The methodological structure includes a bibliographic review, document analysis and participant observation, conducted through semi-structured interviews with representative agents, employees of the institution who work directly and behind the scenes of teaching, including administrative technicians who provide support as facilitators and teachers, the leading characters of the emergency remote teaching system. The evaluation of the Covid-19 institutional contingency plan by the interviewees was positive, contrasting with the common perception of the intensification of dropout phenomenon in the period. Despite the gap between the onset of the pandemic and institutional actions to combat it, good indicators were found for evasion, suggesting that the positive results obtained may be artificial, being biased by the institutional policy.

In this work, ten ligands and four palladium and two platinum complexes containing thiosemicarbazones derived from thiophene were synthesized in order to evaluate their cytotoxic profile against tumor cells. The compounds were characterized by molar conductivity, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (31P{1H}, 1H and 13C{1H} NMR, COSY, HMBC, and HSQC), Infrared (IR) Absorption Spectroscopy, Ultraviolet-Visible Absorption Spectroscopy, Elemental analysis, ESI/MS Mass Spectrometry, and Single Crystal X-ray Diffraction (XRD). From the set of techniques, it was possible to verify that the ligands coordinated in an anionic bidentate form, with the exception of the PtT complex, which coordinated in a neutral form, via nitrogen and sulfur atoms of the thiosemicarbazone and the other sites are occupied by a chloride ligand and a triphenylphosphine. The compounds were subjected to stability tests in DMSO, which suggested the permanence of the chloride ligand in the coordination sphere. Afterwards its cytotoxicity was evaluated by the MTT method against the tumor cell lines DU-145 (prostate), A549 (lung), MDA-MB-231 (breast), A2780 Cis (ovary) and non-tumor cell line MRC5 (lung). The ligands were inactive in all cell lines tested, while the complexes were more promising concerning the A549 and A2780 Cis tumor lines. The most cytotoxic compound PdT showed cytostatic behavior against the A549 tumor lineage, while the PdCH3 compound exhibited antimetastatic and cytotoxic behavior against the A2780 Cis cell line. To explore a possible biological target, DNA interaction assays were performed. These data indicate that the complexes interacted with DNA only at high concentrations (100 uM). Moreover, they suggest that the interaction pathway is electrostatic and/or via groove binding with DNA. Additionally, they could not inhibit the action of topoisomerase IIα and IIβ enzymes. However, the platinum complexes inhibited topoisomerase Iβ at all concentrations evaluated (0.1-100 μM). The most promising compound, PdCH3, provided the accumulation of cells in the sub-G1 phase of the cell cycle, which may indicate induction of apoptosis. Furthermore, this complex inhibited wound closure in Wound Healing assays and significantly altered cell morphology. Such data represent an effective ability to affect the cell viability of cancer cells. These results indicate that the synthesized palladium compounds have an encouraging biological activity.

Filmes comestíveis de guacamole: relações entre as proporções dos componentes e as propriedades
(Universidade Federal de São Carlos, 2022-03-16) Matos, Matheus Carvalho de; Azeredo, Henriette Monteiro Cordeiro de; https://lattes.cnpq.br/8516223928904348; https://lattes.cnpq.br/8522602961816619
The food industry has tried to develop products that meet the requirements of consumers, especially in terms of sensory and health aspects as well as convenience. In times when food delivery has been very frequent, some multicomponent foods may suffer texture changes from water migration between components with a high water activity difference. The present study aimed to develop and characterize edible films from bacterial cellulose and guacamole, to be consumed as a snack or applied as a water barrier layer in multicomponent foods such as tacos, pizzas, and wraps, reducing the water migration and avoiding texture changes. Ten films were produced with different proportions of biopolymeric matrix (bacterial celulose – BC - and carboxymethyl cellulose - CMC), plasticizer (glycerol) and flavor component (guacamole), according to a simplex-centroid design. The results indicated the potential applicability of the films, as well as the influence of the component proportions on the tensile properties, the water vapor permeability (WVP) and the surface hydrophobicity. Films with higher proportions of cellulosic matrix presented lower WVP values, being more promising for the prospected application. An application test was carried out in which the film was tested as a barrier layer between nachos and tomato sauce, and the texture of the nachos was tested after 50 min. The film reduced the texture loss by the nachos, indicating that the water migration was decreased.
