Competitive and Technological Intelligence (CTI) emerges as a methodological alternative for technology-based ventures, encompassing the collection, processing, and automated analysis of technological information from patent documents. This approach aims to capitalize on opportunities and mitigate threats in the competitive environment, effectively directing strategies. The objective of this research was to investigate the use of patent analysis by Competitive and Technological Intelligence in the context of the competitive processes of technology-based ventures. The methodology adopted is classified as a metric, exploratory, and quantitative-qualitative study, using categorical content analysis and bibliometric techniques. The sample consisted of 90 article records indexed in the Web of Science database, representing the intersection between the topics of patent analysis (6,326 documents) and competitive/technological intelligence (4,046 documents). The results achieved include a set of indicators: 1) characterization of the analyzed sample; 2) indicators on patent analysis; 3) indicators on Technological Competitive Intelligence; 4] analysis of the characteristics of patent analysis appropriation by Competitive and Technological Intelligence, including insights into trends and patterns. The conclusion is that patent analysis plays an essential role in supporting Competitive and Technological Intelligence, providing strategic information for innovation and decision-making in technology-based companies. However, the limited intersection between studies on both topics indicates the need for greater methodological integration and in-depth research on the topic. It is recommended that future research explore new analytical approaches and expand the practical application of these concepts across different industrial sectors, promoting better use of patent data in developing competitive strategies.

Considering the municipality of Socorro, Sao Paulo state, with its strong tourism potential and agricultural vocation, this research examines the synergies between rural tourism and agroecology as an alternative for adding value to family farming. The methodology combined a bibliometric analysis with structured and semi-structured interviews conducted with smallholders. The bibliometric analysis revealed a growing theoretical interest after 2018, highlighting tourism’s potential for generating income and promoting environmental and cultural preservation. The interviews likewise recognized its economic, social, and ecological potential, but also pointed to practical challenges such as labor availability, infrastructure, and time constraints. The study concludes that tourism represents a viable opportunity for value addition, but its success depends on careful planning, supportive policies, and attention to local specificities.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most prevalent neurodegenerative disorder worldwide, affecting approximately 50 million people, with an average life expectancy of 5 to 10 years after symptom onset. As life expectancy increases, so does the incidence of AD, leading to significant social and economic burdens, especially on public healthcare systems. From a neuropathological perspective, the main hallmark of AD is the presence of senile plaques composed of toxic aggregates of the β-amyloid peptide (βA40/42), which disrupt cellular homeostasis and damage neuronal structures. Evidence suggests that soluble oligomeric species of βA are the primary agents of toxicity, preceding the formation of mature fibrils. Given this context, it is essential to explore strategies that can interfere with βA aggregation and enable its detection at early stages. Metal complexes have emerged as promising tools, acting both as aggregation inhibitors and as luminescent probes for early diagnosis, overcoming the limitations of traditional markers such as Thioflavin T (ThT), which only detects fibrillar species. In this work, the complex [Ru(phen)₂(pNDpI)](PF₆)2 (RuNDI) was synthesized and characterized with the aim of evaluating its potential as an inhibitor and probe for the aggregation process of the βA₁₋₄₂ peptide. The complex was characterized by mass spectrometry, UV-vis absorption, and steady-state luminescence spectroscopy. It features a straightforward three-step synthesis, high yield, and good solubility in physiological media. Spectroscopic properties—such as strong absorption in the visible region (λₘₐₓ = 450 nm, ε = 13,000 L·mol⁻¹·cm⁻¹), broad emission centered at 610 nm, and a large Stokes shift (5.55 × 10³ cm⁻¹) — highlight its suitability as a luminescent probe for biological applications, with minimal interference from biomolecule absorption and negligible reabsorption of emitted light. βA₁₋₄₂ aggregation studies were conducted using complementary techniques, including fluorescence, circular dichroism, FTIR, and atomic force microscopy. Interaction analyses with RuNDI demonstrated its potential as a luminescent probe for detecting intermediate species formed during peptide aggregation. Comparisons with ThT revealed similar interaction mechanisms, but with advantages linked to RuNDI's spectroscopic features, such as a larger Stokes shift and emission in regions with reduced biological autofluorescence. Furthermore, at concentrations higher than that of the peptide, the complex was able to modulate β-sheet formation and inhibit the progression toward mature fibrils. These findings position RuNDI as a promising tool for investigating the molecular mechanisms underlying the development of Alzheimer’s disease.

Binary regression models are excellent modeling approaches for dichotomous data, allowing us to relate the probability of the event of interest to the available covariates. In this type of scenario, it is common to encounter data imbalance, that is, a proportion of zeros (or ones) significantly different from ones (or zeros), which makes symmetric link functions poor alternatives when fitting the model. In this work, we propose a class of binary regression models fitted with asymmetric link functions, namely: the power and reverse power link functions. Additionally, we incorporate spatial random effects into our regression, thereby assuming that the binary data can be spatially referenced. The resulting binary regression becomes a special type of Bayesian hierarchical model whose spatial structure is modeled through a more flexible prior distribution than the standard CAR (Conditional Autoregressive) model: the G-Wishart prior distribution. Through a motivational dataset, we present an extension of the proposed spatial binary regression model. For both models, we provide simulation studies and applications to real data, as well as a Bayesian analysis for the detection of influential points. Parameter estimation is fully Bayesian, with a focus on maximizing computational efficiency during the estimation process. The performance of the models proposed herein will be assessed and compared using Bayesian diagnostic metrics and predictive quality measures. The performance of our algorithm will be evaluated through computational simulations and applications to real-world datasets. Finally, as a preliminary and motivational perspective, we present a simulation study using the DAGAR spatial model.

Since the redemocratization, public security policies in Brazil have undergone successive legal and institutional reforms, driven by recurring crises and social pressure for more effective responses to crime and violence. These transformations reflect not only conjunctural reactions but also ideological disputes regarding the roles assigned to the State, punishment, and protection in the implementation of public policies. Based on this context, the study recognizes that the post-1988 period was marked by distinct political-ideological orientations, delimiting the research timeframe between 1995 and 2022. This interval encompasses a phase of relative democratic stability and three blocks of institutional change: the liberal pattern during the governments of Fernando Henrique Cardoso, the neo-developmentalist pattern under Lula and Dilma Rousseff’s administrations, and the pattern of democratic regression observed during the governments of Michel Temer and Jair Bolsonaro. In this light, this research proposes to investigate, from the tension between the paradigms of punishment and protection, how and in which direction public security policies were modified throughout this period. The analysis combines David Garland’s (2001) typology of state models of crime control, its application to the Brazilian context by Azevedo and Cifali (2015), and the framework of gradual institutional change developed by Streeck and Thelen (2005) and systematized by Mahoney and Thelen (2010). This combined approach allows not only for identifying and classifying normative changes – from penal toughening to the approval of prevention policies and rights guarantees – but also for understanding how incremental adjustments gradually shift the axis of public policies between punitive and protective rationalities. The research integrates two complementary movements – one theoretical-historical and the other empirical – using a database of 60 approved laws, which were initially analyzed quantitatively and later subjected to qualitative content analysis, focusing on 9 laws identified as substantive policies in the field. The thesis of misalignment emerges, according to which the relationship between the ideological profile of governments and the type of policy adopted is not linear, highlighting the complexity of institutional arrangements and normative disputes shaping the public security field. Nonetheless, the study points out that public security policies primarily change through layering. The analysis seeks to reveal the ideological vectors underlying these transformations and, by demonstrating how specific normative decisions accumulate effects over time, contributes to Political Science by offering a deep understanding of the reconfiguration of the State’s role in addressing crime and insecurity management in contemporary Brazil.

Universidade de classe mundial no brasil: trabalho, regulação e subordinação à economia política do Banco Mundial
(Universidade Federal de São Carlos, 2025-08-28) Fargoni, Everton Henrique Eleutério; Silva Junior, João dos Reis; https://lattes.cnpq.br/7470123176068422; https://orcid.org/0000-0003-2667-0371; https://lattes.cnpq.br/6279752130688091; https://orcid.org/0000-0001-7536-9126
This thesis investigates, from the perspective of political economy and the historical-dialectical method, the influence of the World Bank (WB) on the regulatory policies of Brazilian public higher education, focusing on the dissemination of the World-Class Universities (WCU) model. The study is based on the premise that the consolidation of this international paradigm does not arise from voluntary adaptations or isolated administrative choices, but rather emerges from a complex process forged by transnational power networks and mediated by technical, symbolic, and financial devices that permeate the institutional fabric of Brazilian universities. Centering the analysis on academic labor, regulation, and subordination, the research critically articulates the historical trajectory of the WB, the reconfiguration of the social role of the public university, and the rise of a rationality oriented toward excellence, competitiveness, and integration into global evaluation circuits. The investigation draws on a corpus composed of eight paradigmatic WB reports, national higher education legislation, and guiding documents, analyzed through concepts such as totality, historicity, contradiction, mediation, hegemony, and alienation, engaging throughout the text with classic and contemporary authors of international reference. The analysis shows that the adoption of the WCU model introduced heteronomous forms of regulation, reorganizing not only curricular structures and university management, but also research, teaching practices, and academic labor relations, fostering the centralization of decision-making power, institutional standardization, and the commodification of knowledge. The study demonstrates that the influence of the WB materializes as a vector of structural reconfiguration, never reducible to a merely technical or disinterested act; on the contrary, it shapes an architecture of subordination in which the Brazilian public university is called to serve the interests of global financial capital, often to the detriment of social demands and national development projects. Pressures for internationalization, rankings, technological innovation, and corporate partnerships turn the university into a showcase of results and a laboratory of institutional adaptation, eroding its critical social function and autonomy. The research reveals that such transformations do not occur through direct imposition, but through symbolic, technical, and political mechanisms that permeate institutional and everyday practices, altering meanings, priorities, and actions. Ultimately, the thesis answers the central question affirmatively, demonstrating that the World Bank exerts decisive, multifaceted, and often covert influence over the transformation of Brazilian public universities into world-class institutions, with profound repercussions for academic labor, citizenship formation, the social role of the university, and the future of national public higher education.
