Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the concept of ambivalence in Freud's second drive theory. As ambivalence characterizes the simultaneous presence of feelings of love and hate toward the same object, these were the signs used to trace ambivalence. The investigation is structured into three dimensions: drive, cultural, and Oedipal. The first chapter addresses the conflict between life drives and death drives as a possible expression of ambivalence. The second chapter deals with drive dispositions based on cultural demands. The third chapter explores ambivalence in its Oedipal dimension.
