The calculation of flexible or rigid mat foundation is difficult to perform because it is a matter of analyzing a plate resting on the ground, subjected to the external actions and the reactions of the soil. Following a trend of the calculation executed in concrete in Brazil, the plate is idealized as being a grid, that is, discretized in beams in one direction and another. To consider the soil and the interaction with the structure is used, in this work, the theory of spring of Winkler. The study of the passage from a continuous to a discrete medium is the main theme of this work. In this way the work proposes the use, as a tool, of a free and free grid program developed by a UFSCar research group to calculate mat foundation and beams on elastic basis. The obtained results will be compared with traditional values found by the theory of continuous beam medium on elastic basis and, in the case of plates, with numerical processes employed numerical techniques diverse as finite element. Finally, comparisons will be made of the results obtained with values of commercial software such as Eberick V10, showing that the final results are forthcoming.
