Abstract

This dissertation has as general objectives to investigate the development of Scientific Literacy in the initial grades through teaching by investigation carried out through experiments; and to verify the students' argumentative process and the Scientific Literacy Indicators through investigative teaching. It is also intended to identify the students' argumentative process through research teaching in natural science classes; analyse which indicators of Scientific Literacy are developed in students in the argumentative process; to verify if the accomplishment of experiments and simulations in the classroom favours the appropriation of scientific knowledge structured on the axes of Scientific Literacy. The problem-question designed to be answered is the following: to what extent do experiments favour the appropriation of science in students of the initial series? The approach is qualitative, using bibliographic research to compose the theoretical framework of the research, which is why it can also be considered exploratory. It is also field and applied research, as experiments and simulations will be applied in classrooms of a municipal public school in Sorocaba, State of São Paulo, Brazil, and the observation technique will also be used to analyse the activities carried out. by the students during the experimental and investigative classes. The data analysis will cover an approach to the arguments of students from classes in the initial grades of elementary school, conjugating with the standard of argumentation Fischer (2002), from the transcripts of the students' argumentative speeches. The analysis will consider the presence – or not – of Scientific Literacy axle in the arguments.
