Abstract

This paper, from an anthropological perspective, examines the challenges faced by the Jacaré-Pepira River, focusing specifically on silting and analyzing how these processes affect local livelihoods, tourism, and environmental conservation initiatives in Brotas (SP). The research aims to understand how various social actors — including residents, tourist guides, family farmers, the agribusiness sector, and NGO members — perceive the river's transformations, recognizing it as a central element of local identity. The study seeks to explore the symbolic and practical meanings associated with the Jacaré-Pepira, how its waters are used and represented in the daily lives of the community, and how memories and attachments related to the river influence conservation efforts. Additionally, the analysis highlights the territorial tensions among tourism (a key economic activity), family farming, agribusiness, and environmental demands. By engaging with local NGOs, the study investigates conflicts and connections between technical and popular knowledge and examines the local strategies for sustainability and environmental education. Theoretically, the study is based on Tim Ingold’s concepts, especially his ideas of "dwelling" and the "landscape as a living practice," to develop a nuanced view of local relationships with the environment and the knowledge created within the territory. It also incorporates Marisol de la Cadena’s perspectives on multiple ontologies and non-human knowledges, recognizing the river as an active agent in shaping shared worlds.
