The undergraduate thesis entitled “Field Study: Disparities in Access and the Importance of the Methodology for Basic Education” aims to analyze field study as an active, interdisciplinary, and essential methodology for teaching Geography in basic education, as highlighted by authors such as Pontuschka and Harvey. The research starts from the recognition of the gap between theory and practice in schools, proposing field study as an effective alternative to overcome fragmented and overly descriptive pedagogical practices, bringing school content closer to students’ concrete realities. Consequently, the existence of socioeconomic disparities between public and private school systems becomes evident, which hinders students’ access to formative experiences outside the classroom. In this context, the Parque Estadual Turístico do Alto Ribeira (PETAR) is analyzed as an example of an educational space that enables meaningful learning experiences through the observation and analysis of natural, social, and cultural aspects, despite the socioeconomic barriers that limit access to field study activities. Statistical data are used to demonstrate that students from lower-income families have fewer opportunities to participate in cultural and touristic activities, such as visits to conservation units. Furthermore, the study presents perceptions and experiences of professionals working in educational tourism in the PETAR region, who emphasize the importance of teacher training, planning, and institutional support in making field study a structured pedagogical practice. In conclusion, the thesis argues that access to quality educational experiences should be understood as a universal right, not a privilege for the few.

Experiência e metodologias ativas: análise de dissertações e proposta didática
(Universidade Federal de São Carlos, 2025-07-24) Rodrigues, Daniel Felipe Pereira Laureano; Gama, Renata Prenstteter; lattes.cnpq.br/4153572041829838; https://orcid.org/0000-0001-6338-4345
The primary methodological foundation of basic education is traditionalism, a name given to the perpetuation of a structure that focuses on the teacher as the main agent. However, there are approaches that allow for the use of alternative methodologies. Among these possibilities, some prioritize student knowledge and actions and are therefore called active methodologies. One approach is experience-based, which prioritizes student experiences. In this context, this paper aims to understand the concept of student experience in mathematics classes. To this end, we describe and analyze the concept of experience in dissertations that explore mathematics teaching through the use of active methodologies in elementary school, high school, or adult education (EJA). We also propose and implement a didactic sequence to identify and understand the relevance of student experience manifestations. Therefore, the research was divided into two phases. The first consists of a systematic review using the Brazilian Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations (BDTD). The second is a teaching proposal to be implemented in the weekly Education and Citizenship Preparatory Course class at UFSCar, Sorocaba campus. Of the 81 selected papers, 8 were selected for reading and analysis. Many papers were developed during the pandemic, which made the flipped classroom methodology the most common. Regarding the experience, all the dissertations contain theoretical principles consistent with the theoretical foundation of this work. However, when analyzed by teaching sequences, only three dissertations incorporate and articulate the experience in the development of the proposals. The second phase consisted of developing and implementing a three-stage teaching proposal at the Education and Citizenship Preparatory Course at UFSCar - Sorocaba campus. The first phase of the flipped classroom had low participation, which seems to indicate a hint of traditionalism in the face of an active approach. The second phase required adaptation to facilitate the activity in groups, which took different approaches to solving the problem. One group first discovered a problem and then detected the numerical data, while the other set out to search for data to analyze the range of possibilities and then decide which to select and why. The third phase, centered on presenting the results, revealed, despite initial hesitation on the part of the students, a systematization of the vivid learning process and the expression of student experiences that influenced decision-making in developing the proposal.

This work aims to analyze the implications for public transportation users in the city of Sorocaba, São Paulo, specifically in the Parque das Laranjeiras neighborhood, following the implementation of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system in the municipality. This research considered an analysis that contextualized the history of public transportation in Sorocaba and the changes brought about by the Sorocaba BRT, particularly the Itavuvu Corridor, which was completed in August 2020. The system, promoted in political campaigns as a solution for agility, comfort, and sustainability in urban mobility, reorganized several bus routes, including the division of line 42 Laranjeiras into two distinct routes (130 São Camilo and 131 Casa Branca), significantly altering the daily lives of Parque das Laranjeiras residents. To reach the desired considerations, the combination of documentary analysis, field research, application of a qualitative-quantitative questionnaire and the formulation of an analysis on the results obtained, taking into account Urban Geography and its precepts to understand the urban structure and its challenges in everyday life.

This thesis examines the process of teaching and learning Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) as an additional language (PEALibras-LAd) through the lens of Complexity Theory (Larsen-Freeman & Cameron, 2008; Paiva, 2011), framing it as a Complex Adaptive System (CAS). Despite the growing visibility of Libras as an additional language in Brazil, research on its teaching from a complexity perspective remains scarce. The goal of this study is to investigate how language advising (LA) can contribute to PEALibras-LAd, particularly in fostering learner autonomy and motivation. The study was conducted in a Brazilian federal university with undergraduate students training to become translators and interpreters of Libras. Its objectives are to discuss the role of the language advisor in this process, reflect on the impact of motivation on learning, highlight the importance of autonomy, and analyze the articulation between advisor and language teacher. Methodologically, this qualitative and interpretivist research draws on Complex Thought Modeling (CTM), combining field notes with retrospective analysis (Larsen-Freeman, 2011). The researcher’s role as advisor enabled observation of PEALibras-LAd at multiple levels, bridging theory and practice. The analysis followed four stages: (1) construction of a CTM based on the advisor’s (self-)reflections; (2) modeling PEALibras-LAd as a CAS, with emphasis on language development, learning at the edge of chaos, and the tension between cartesian and complex curricula; (3) discussion of emergent hypotheses concerning motivation and autonomy; and (4) reflection on the relation between advisor and complex teacher. Findings indicate that PEALibras-LAd operates as a CAS that requires sensitivity to emergent dynamics, recognition of the advisor’s role as a mediator of reflection and support, and a teacher profile aligned with the advisor’s, capable of collaboratively promoting autonomy and motivation in Libras learners.

Background: Bone dysplasia is a type of lesion of the human jaw, as determined by visual inspection of computed tomography images. The limited ability of the human eye to distinguish gray levels, coupled with visual fatigue and tiredness, can result in misdiagnosis and, consequently, inappropriate treatment. Objective: The objective of this study was to quantify visual characteristics in computed tomography images of lesions caused by dysplasia. Materials and Methods: Seven cone-beam computed tomography images of patients diagnosed with dysplasia were retrospectively screened. Regions of interest (ROIs) were selected by a radiologist and subsequently processed using conventional and adaptive contrast enhancement techniques. First-order (mean, standard deviation, skewness, kurtosis, entropy) and second-order (contrast, brightness, homogeneity, energy) texture descriptors were applied to the processed ROIs to quantify radiographic aspects of dysplasia lesions. Results: A total of nine texture descriptors were calculated for each region of interest. Comparisons between texture feature values revealed numerical differences between the healthy and dysplasia regions. The mean, asymmetry, and entropy features differed significantly between the healthy and dysplastic regions. Contrast, homogeneity, and energy also exhibited observable differences for the two regions. Conclusions: This study focused on quantifying radiographic changes in computed tomography images of lesions caused by dysplasia in the human jaw bone. Direct comparisons revealed numerical differences for most texture features between the healthy and dysplasia regions. Although the results are numerically distinct, their significance still needs to be investigated in future stages through statistical tests applied to a larger number of images. Novelty: The study's novelty lies in the quantification of radiological alterations in areas of the mandible affected by dysplasia. Clinical Relevance: Unlike qualitative analysis through visual inspection, which is costly and subjective, the use of a more systematic and non-subjective method, such as the one proposed, has the potential to facilitate diagnoses in routine dental clinical practice. Knowledge Advances: There is a gap in the literature regarding the use of texture analysis to characterize subtypes of lesions caused by dysplasia. In this preliminary study, one type of lesion was characterized, and the procedure developed can be reproduced to characterize other lesion subtypes.

In recent decades, sustainability has become a widely discussed topic, prompting companies to adopt ESG practices not only to comply with regulatory requirements but also as part of their business strategies. This dissertation, structured in two articles, aims to evaluate whether the adoption of such practices influences financial risks in the Brazilian market. The first article presents a Systematic Literature Review based on the PRISMA protocol methodology, which enabled a thorough analysis of the existing literature and revealed a significant lack of studies on the topic in Latin America — less than 1% of the publications found. Addressing this gap, the second article empirically tests, through Panel Data Regression, the relationship between financial risk — represented by the Z”-Score and Beta proxies — and three Brazilian sustainability indices (ISE, ICO2, and IGC-NM), operationalized as dummy variables. The study analyzed 225 publicly traded Brazilian companies between 2017 and 2023, using three distinct estimation methods: Fixed Effects, Generalized Least Squares (XTGLS), and Generalized Method of Moments (GMM). The results indicated that companies listed in the ISE and ICO2 indices tend to exhibit higher Z”-Scores, suggesting lower financial risk, while those in the IGC-NM index showed higher financial risk. Regarding Beta, the effects of ESG practices were less consistent, with a notable result for ICO2 companies, which demonstrated lower financial risk under one estimation method. Overall, the findings suggest that companies included in the ISE and ICO2 sustainability indices are associated with lower financial risk, whereas the IGC-NM index yielded inconclusive results. Together, the studies underscore the importance of expanding the understanding of ESG effects both in international and Brazilian contexts, and encourage managers and researchers to further explore the relationship between ESG practices and financial risk.

This research is motivated by the production of yttrium–aluminum garnet (YAG), a transparent ceramic with a cubic crystalline structure that exhibits technologically relevant applications, such as solid-state lasers used in medicine, military defense, and industry. When doped with cerium (III) atoms, it is employed as an X-ray scintillator, serving as a detector in the Sirius beam-lines located at the CNPEM campus in Campinas (SP). Based on a selected article from the literature, a detailed study of the conditions of the co-precipitation synthesis method was conducted with the aim of improving the production of the material (powders and pellets). After obtaining a single-phase system, this knowledge was extended to advance the fabrication of other garnets, such as lutetium–aluminum garnet (LuAG) — employed as a scintillator for high-energy X-rays — and terbium–aluminum garnet (TAG), used as a matrix in various optical–magnetic devices. The powders obtained were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), and the results indicated the achievement of a pure phase after calcination at 1100 °C for 3 hours. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analyses provided essential in-formation regarding the particle size and morphology, revealing an average diameter of approximately 43 nm and faceted structures at the same temper-ature. Upon examining the XRD data of the produced pellet, a secondary phase was identified in the initial materials, and its nature was confirmed by additional investigations using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Subse-quently, the analysis of the calcined powder by TEM corroborated the presence of a secondary alumina phase on its surface. Adjustments were implemented in the synthesis process to optimize the dispersion of both the pre-cipitate and the powder. At the conclusion of the research, it was possible to resolve the formation of the secondary phase, achieving single phase materials as confirmed by the XRD and SEM analyses.

This paper investigates the impacts of disinformation and fake news on African-based religions in Brazil, such as Candomblé, Umbanda, Quimbanda, Ifá, and Vodum. These religious manifestations have been constant targets of both symbolic and material attacks, reinforced by misleading content disseminated especially through social media and hegemonic religious discourses. The research aims to highlight how Information Science can contribute to combating disinformation and promoting religious freedom. Using the bibliographic review methodology, the study analyzes statistical data, as well as media and academic reports, that demonstrate the effects of religious intolerance and religious racism in the daily lives of practitioners of these religions. The results indicate that disinformation is intertwined with colonial and Eurocentric power structures, contributing to the erasure of Afro-Brazilian ancestral knowledge and the perpetuation of symbolic violence. The paper reaffirms the importance of an ethical and anti-racist approach in the field of information.

This study investigated the influence of the availability of teaching resources on students’ motivation to learn Science in two Full-Time Schools (PEI) in the municipality of São Carlos-SP, with contrasting infrastructure contexts. The research adopted a mixed-methods approach, combining Likert-scale questionnaires and open-ended questions, applied to 9th-grade teachers and students. The results revealed significant differences in students’ perceptions regarding motivation and engagement, with School A standing out for its greater variety of teaching resources. In contrast, School B, with limited infrastructure, showed lower average motivation, although qualitative reports indicated teacher mediation as an essential factor in minimizing material deficiencies. Data analysis suggests that the presence of teaching resources contributes to more engaging lessons, active participation, and better understanding of complex content. Nevertheless, even in contexts of scarcity, the teacher’s role can offset part of the structural limitations, provided there is appreciation and pedagogical autonomy. The research highlights the importance of teaching resources as fundamental elements for a more equitable, participatory, and meaningful education, especially in peripheral areas where structural inequalities are most pronounced.

This study proposes to examine the meanings of slavery and race relations in Brazil amid the presence of United States Confederate immigrants in the nineteenth century, drawing on the theoretical framework of the Semantics of the Event. This theory stems from a trajectory of reflection within the field of the Semantics of Enunciation, which develops a way of describing meaning that differs from formal, cognitive, or structural perspectives. We present analyses of excerpts from documents written by these Confederates, such as letters and reports, which address various aspects—from the characteristics of the Brazilian population to economic elements, with particular emphasis on agriculture. This emphasis aligned with the main economic activity carried out by Southern Americans and revealed a specific interest in enslaved labor. These accounts contributed to consolidating Brazil as a viable destination for Southerners, especially after their defeat in the Civil War in 1865, which marked the end of slavery in the United States. We thus have Americans and Brazilians, subjects who speak different languages that compose distinct enunciative spaces and who carry different histories of enunciations (and of meanings). Our aim, then, is to understand how the speakers of these documents — shaped by the meanings of the English language spoken in the United States and possibly by other languages spoken there — signify slavery in Brazil, an enunciative space constituted by the political relation between other languages such as Portuguese, Indigenous languages, and African languages spoken here, each with its own history of enunciations and, consequently, distinct meanings for slaves, slavery, and colonizers. The analyses show that, in Brazil, the Confederates did not merely adapt to a new country but actively sought to reinscribe a racially hierarchical way of life. The meanings of “slavery,” “slave,” and “negro” in their texts recall the history of colonization and enslavement in the United States, highlighting the memorable of racial discrimination centered on skin color. In this way, the study contributes to understanding how the meanings of slavery and racism shift, are resignified, and continue to operate in language, sustaining racial hierarchies that traverse different times and spaces.

In the 1970s, the North American Hunter Thompson gave birth to a new genre of journalism, Gonzo. The genre, laden with subjectivity, profane, sarcastic, exaggerated, and unedited, emerges as a confrontation to conventional objectivist journalism. Focusing on this production, the general objective of this work is to explore the characteristics of Gonzo journalism based on Bakhtin's theory, primarily using the concepts of dialogism (Bakhtin, 1979) and speech genre (Bakhtin, 2003). Meanwhile, the specific objectives consist of analyzing, in Thompson's work, the established dialogue with objectivist journalism and the ideals of the American Dream and the counterculture. The corpus used is the work "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" by Hunter Thompson, a seminal text of Gonzo journalism. The justification for this work lies in the growing relevance of discussions on subjectivity and objectivity in journalism, especially in the contemporary context of social media, where journalistic impartiality is increasingly questioned. The research results made it possible to identify the extent to which the invention of this journalistic style is founded on the deconstruction of the pillars of objectivity, calling into question the journalistic institution itself and, furthermore, challenging the formative values of American society: the American Dream and the counterculture.

Labor pain can be experienced either as a positive event or as a traumatic moment, depending on the pregnant person’s perception and the quality of care received from antenatal to intrapartum care. Fear of pain strongly influences the choice of birth mode, frequently serving as a justification for cesarean section, both by women themselves and by health professionals who reinforce certain beliefs and opinions. In this context, it is essential that pregnant people and their support networks receive clear information about the physiological process of childbirth throughout pregnancy, thereby strengthening autonomy and promoting more positive childbirth experiences. Aim: Analyze the impact of using a guidance booklet on non-pharmacological methods of labor pain relief on women’s childbirth experiences. Method: This descriptive-exploratory study employed a mixed quantitative and qualitative approach in two phases, conducted with pregnant women from primary health care units and a maternity hospital. The first phase involved the presentation of a guidance booklet on non-pharmacological methods of pain relief. The second phase comprised data collection on the childbirth experience, using the Brazilian version of the Childbirth Experience Questionnaire (CEQ-2BR) and narrative accounts from participants of the first phase. Results: Mean scores in the questionnaire subcategories indicated predominantly positive childbirth experiences, with values equal to or above 3. Thematic analysis of the narratives revealed four main categories: (1) Expectations regarding labor and professional support; (2) Perception of autonomy during labor; (3) Use of non-pharmacological methods of pain relief; and (4) Contribution of educational technologies in the childbirth context. Conclusion: The findings highlight that the use of non-pharmacological methods and access to information through educational technologies enhance women’s autonomy and foster more positive childbirth experiences, reinforcing the importance of health education during antenatal care.

This work critically analyzes the presence and representation of social inequality, especially poverty, in contemporary Brazilian children's literature, focusing on the catalogs of three major publishers: Companhia das Letrinhas, Editora FTD, and Expressão Popular. Based on specific selection criteria, it investigates how these publishers address sensitive social themes, considering their editorial proposals and available works. The results show that despite advances in including topics such as racial diversity and cultural plurality, poverty remains underrepresented or marginally addressed in commercial publishers. In contrast, Expressão Popular stands out with an editorial line that directly confronts inequalities, focusing on critical formation and the visibility of marginalized childhoods. The article emphasizes the need to expand access to and circulation of these narratives, particularly in schools and libraries, to foster a more plural, ethical, and socially transformative children's literature.

Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) is a progressive and irreversible brain disorder that affects cognitive functions, accounting for 60 to 80% of dementia cases worldwide. With approximately 50 million people affected, AD is considered a major public health issue. Although there is no cure, treatments can slow its progression, especially when applied in the early stages. In this context, the prediction of Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) cases in its stable and progressive forms is crucial for more effective interventions. This study aims to develop a predictive model based on the Random Forest algorithm using features extracted from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), such as cortical thickness, volume, and texture from different brain regions, to aid in the early diagnosis of AD. The ComBat harmonization method was applied to ensure model reproducibility. Model performance was assessed using metrics such as accuracy, balanced accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, Area Under the Curve (AUC) and F1-score, allowing for a detailed analysis of their effectiveness in predicting AD progression based on MRI scans. The best F1-score performance was achieved using feature selection based on Random Forest importance, with the 75th percentile as the cutoff. A total of 312 features across 66 Regions of Interest (ROIs) were selected. The results were: F1-score 84.31±8.73%, accuracy 84.31±8.70%, balanced accuracy 84.31±8.64%, sensitivity 84.00±9.67%, specificity 84.62±13.01%, and AUC 0.85±0.07. The results demonstrate that the proposed approach combines competitive performance and interpretability, offering a promising and clinically relevant tool for predicting the conversion from MCI to AD based on MRI.

The failed promises of progress, which set in motion a well-known history of Maceió-AL, now cloud the horizons of my interlocutors who, even so, persist in the double game of making other urban histories and, at the same time, informing the production of knowledge about the city. This work deals with the process of urbanization in Maceió, based on the paths of territorial and symbolic displacement in the lives of residents of its peripheries. These journeys, understood as products of the city and producers of it, will be the guides for understanding the state of affairs that shape Maceió's urban order. From an ethnographic perspective, based on the idea of experience and taking into account the encounters established during this research, I question the city that places me in front of an analytical mirror. By looking at the urban journeys of my interlocutors, I also reflect on my own urban condition. In methodological terms, I recover diffuse experiences from my encounters with the city and its characters, in a narrative experiment that seeks a minor urban sociology. Direct and participant observations, informal conversations and scenes from everyday life are collated with family memories, newspaper clippings and yellowed photographs, song lyrics, popular poems, stories of blessed and lost souls. Faced with a teleology of progress, which views the marginal city through the key of the absence of a modernity to be fulfilled, I argue for the need to produce an urban history against the grain, capable of facing the multiplicity of what is lived, filling the foundation of criticism with the spirit of the present and giving rise to new possible worlds.

With the growth of digital media and social networks, the importance of user-generated content (UGC) has increased considerably, creating demand for Natural Language Processing (NLP) tools and applications capable of handling the predominantly non-canonical language found across UGC genres. Annotated corpora are essential resources for this purpose, as are the description and analysis of their linguistic characteristics. Among these resources, corpora composed of tweets/posts stand out, given the relevance of the Twitter/X platform for various segments of society. In this undergraduate thesis, the manual annotation of lexical-orthographic phenomena in the financial-market tweet corpus known as DANTEStocks was further advanced. This annotation effort, which covered approximately 75% of the total tweets, enabled a preliminary characterization of the corpus based on a hierarchical typology of classes, types, and subtypes designed to capture creative phenomena and variation with respect to the standard norm.

This study analyzes phrases written on the walls of women's restrooms in the academic blocks (ATs) at UFSCar, understanding these writings as forms of resistance and expressions of silenced voices. The corpus consists of twelve phrases denouncing harassment, racism, authoritarianism, and institutional conflicts. The research adopts an analytical procedure aimed at breaking with apparent meanings in the texts, revealing contradictions, silencing, and resistance processes, based on authors such as Pêcheux, Maingueneau, and Foucault. Analyses are conducted at three levels: syntactic, semantic, and discursive, also considering concepts like paratopia, heterotopia, and resistance. The study shows that, despite being a marginal space within the university, the restroom becomes a site of speech and denunciation where voices that usually lack formal platforms find expression. The phrases do not necessarily follow standard norms but still produce meaning and carry marks of pain, anger, belonging, and struggle. These utterances challenge the idea of adherent discourse and reveal a discourse full of conflicts and silencing. The research highlights the importance of paying attention to marginal spaces and how they are used to break institutional silencing. As a continuation, it is suggested to expand the corpus and analyze men's restrooms to understand other forms of manifestation.
