Resumo

In the 1970s, the North American Hunter Thompson gave birth to a new genre of journalism, Gonzo. The genre, laden with subjectivity, profane, sarcastic, exaggerated, and unedited, emerges as a confrontation to conventional objectivist journalism. Focusing on this production, the general objective of this work is to explore the characteristics of Gonzo journalism based on Bakhtin's theory, primarily using the concepts of dialogism (Bakhtin, 1979) and speech genre (Bakhtin, 2003). Meanwhile, the specific objectives consist of analyzing, in Thompson's work, the established dialogue with objectivist journalism and the ideals of the American Dream and the counterculture. The corpus used is the work "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" by Hunter Thompson, a seminal text of Gonzo journalism. The justification for this work lies in the growing relevance of discussions on subjectivity and objectivity in journalism, especially in the contemporary context of social media, where journalistic impartiality is increasingly questioned. The research results made it possible to identify the extent to which the invention of this journalistic style is founded on the deconstruction of the pillars of objectivity, calling into question the journalistic institution itself and, furthermore, challenging the formative values of American society: the American Dream and the counterculture.
